Heavenly Beats: The Church With A DJ

0
0

If God is in fact a DJ, as Faithless declared, then he would most definitely be looking down favourably upon The Church At Clarendon - a 104-year-old church in Arlington County, Virginia. Why? Well because the Christian folk there are doing things a little differently, swapping hymn congregations for a young DJ by the name of Hans Daniel, aka Hans Solo, who is soundtracking their Sunday idol worshipping with heavenly songs underpinned by groovy house beats.

Want to know more? Check out the video feature on the story from The Washington Post below. It gives a whole new meaning to the term "Sunday sessions".

Watch "DJ" Danny Dyer's 'DJ Tips'

0
0

Sharp tongued wide-boy actor Danny Dyer has long been known for his sideline 'career' as a 'DJ' - but now he's shared a few 'tips' to help other 'budding' jocks follow in his path.

The star of films such as Football Factory, The Business and more, the UK actor delivers some tips on handling rowdy crowds, how to react to bad requests and even the excuse to "give the missus after a three day bender". As ever, the out-spoken actor pulls no punches in this short video, produced by Point Blank production school in East London. Mind the language.

Danny's DJ sets have become something of folklore with the celebrity even making way to Ibiza's bars and haunts, besides regular tours of the UK. If you're unfamiliar with his prowess on the decks, check this eye-wettingly funny video of the man himself entertaining the crowds (or empty room) of Rockafellas in Corby. Respect, brufs.

We Are FSTVL Announces Plans for 2014

0

After a successful first outing this year, London outskirts event We Are FSTVL have announced plans to come back bigger and better than ever for 2014's edition.

Based within a mere 25 minute tube journey from central London, We Are FSTVL brought some of the biggest artists, brands and labels in contemporary house, bass music and techno to Damyn's Hall Aerodrome in Upminster, Essex. Part of the so called greater London belt, it was the first time an event of this kind was held in the Eastern outskirts of the city, sporting labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Apollonia and Defected (all hosting stages), with artists ranging from the likes of Max Chapman to Eats Everything, Breakage to B.Traits and Deetron to Ricardo Villalobos besides many more huge names. This killer line-up (especially for a debut year) helped to launch the one day event with ease - see for yourself in the official aftermovie below.

Good news awaits in 2014 then as the 'FSTVL' expands to two days and nights on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May, also increasing capacity at the site over two expansive fields in Damyn’s Hall Aerodrome. With it shall come 16 stages, playing host to 200 top quality names from around the world that shall be teased in due course. Bespoke and eye catching decor and design have also been promised, including stylized arenas, structures and more, including The Tower of Light, FSTVL Avenue, Confetti Island, The Tunnel and The Pyramids. They'll reveal more on that in due course too - but it sounds like the organisers are firmly out of the blocks as the festival is taken up a gear. It all sounds mighty exciting to us.

More information is to come over the following months. Keep an eye on their website and grab early bird tickets from here.

Hump Day Gear Porn: A Night In a Synth Store

Ron Kurti, who has lived next to Switched On, a synth store in Austin, Texas, always dreamed of having the store as his studio.  After convincing the store to let him in for a night, he created an original composition using a variety of analog and modular synthesizers, drum machines, guitar pedals and more. The result is a cool look at the magic that can be created by a firm knowledge of hardware and a great video editor. Enjoy!

Dillon Francis Accuses Katy Perry of 'Ripping Off' Video

0
0

Accusations of Plagiarism are abound once more as Dillon Francis accuses Katy Perry for 'ripping off' the concept of the video for single 'Messages'.

In Katy Perry's video for new track 'Roar', the video emulates a message thread on an iPhone, which pop-up on screen and read the lyrics to the tune - an extremely similar stylistic trend that featured heavily in Francis' video.

Dillon tweeted: "Damn first @official_flo steals @diplo's "butters theme" music idea now @katyperry steals my "messages" music video idea..What the fuck?" from his account, somewhat a little lighter and less sweary than his label boss Diplo a few weeks back. Take a peek at his 'original' take on the concept below (no matter how you look at it, both videos do seem rather familiar).

It seems that perhaps Dillon thought twice about his comment (or possibly the pointless furor that could come as a result), tweeting: "Legitimately this is so dope that @katyperry's director thought my video was good enough to rip off."

Is this all just a Mad Decent marketing ploy, or just sheer coincidence that their artists are watching new media circles like hawks?

Get Lost Returns to Los Angeles in Style

After establishing itself as a Miami Music Week staple for the last eight years, Crosstown Rebels is bringing its highly anticipated daytime Get Lost party to Los Angeles on Saturday, August 24th. LA has already experienced Get Lost before, but this summer marks the introduction of the Miami style daytime edition to the City of Angels. Miami’s Get Lost parties are well known internationally and have featured the likes of Richie Hawtin, Damian Lazarus, Seth Troxler and Carl Craig making unforgettable appearances. The extravaganza is known to run for up to 20 hours, from the early afternoon into the morning hours, with its well rounded and consistently impressive lineups.

The artists on the bill at this year's Get Lost LA are fully on par with the level of quality fans have come to expect from the legendary Miami parties with Art Department, Francesca Lombardo, Jamie Jones, and DJ Harvey joining the man behind it all, Damian Lazarus. 2013 marks the ten year anniversary of the label, which will also be celebrating the release of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ 2-disc “Get Lost” compilation.

Get Lost LA will take place in the Egyptian Theatre’s courtyard, where the Crosstown crew aims to bring the experience of its past big stages at Electric Daisy Carnival and Beyond Wonderland to a non-stadium venue “with production focused on allowing people to surrender themselves to underground dance music, rather than overawe.” The party promises to be a very special day commemorating all that the label has been up to in the last ten years such as its recent Rebel Rave world tour and musical catalog of some of today’s biggest releases from Mathew Johnson, Francesca Lombardo, Sub-ann, and Fur Coat among others.

Grimes Trolls Boiler Room Fans Whilst DJing At Richie Hawtin's Ibiza Villa

0
0

Grimes has managed to royally piss off Boiler Room fans during her DJ set at Richie Hawtin's Ibiza pad for the website's ‘Ibiza Villa Takeovers’ series. The electronic pop star shared the decks (she actually played off her ipod) with fellow ENTER. guests Nina Kraviz and Azari & III, however her tracks selections were far from tasteful, dropping cheesy pop songs a la 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey, Vengaboys, and even Taylor Swift, much to the extreme distaste of viewers tuned into the broadcast. Check some of the angry tweets below.

Grimes, on the other hand, was having a whale of a time trolling the chin-stroking viewers, which was clearly evident in her own tweet which read, "Pissing off all Djs by playing t swift on boiler room tune in!" And what did Hawtin make of all this? When the Minus boss hopped on the decks himself, he interrupted his set midway to play Nicki Minaj's 'Beez In The Trap,' almost suggesting he was in on the joke too, before returning to his signature techno.

Grimes is set to play the ENTER.Air room at Space this Thursday 15th August.

Fresh Blood: Oliver Tank

0
0

Oliver Tank in some respects bares similarities to Elizabeth Rose, also a Fresh Blood inductee (listen to her mixhere). Both are young Sydneysiders currently makng waves in the electronic community through crafting superb electronic pop. Both are also producers first, DJs second. Which, if your tastes lie in a variety of genres, is what makes their Fresh Bood mixes so refreshing. Oliver kicks things off with his beautiful cover of Simon And Garfunkel's classic 'Sound Of Silence' before settling in for a trip through glitchy and dreamy electronica with smatterings of hip-hop and pop.

To accompany his mix for us, we threw a few questions at Oliver to discover a little more about the producer who recently supported UK poster boy James Blake on his tour of Australia this year. Remember the name Oliver Tank...big things are on the horizon.

(download here)

Pulse: I read that the first album you bought was by Limp Bizkit, which some would suggest is odd given the music you make now, however most teenagers' tastes change at some point. When did this happen for you and what music did you start listening to after your nu-metal phase? Oliver Tank: Yes 'Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water' was the first album I ever bought, closely followed by 'Get Rich or Die Trying' by 50 cent. I went through a bit of a band stage when I was like like 11-12 where I thought bands like Blink 182 and Red Hot Chili Peppers were the be all end all and I thought hip-hop wasn't even real music. Then when I got into high school I started to really enjoy hip-hop but still listened to bands, then after high school I started getting more into different types of music and really fell in love with what was happening in the electronic scene at the time. It was all so new and exciting and I'd never heard anything like that before.

Did what your parents listened to when you were growing up have a big impact on you? I remember they listened to a lot of Michael Jackson and Simon and Garfunkel. I enjoyed it, they were all pretty classic tracks. I don't know if it had much of an impact on the music I make now though, I feel as though I'm mostly influenced by music form the last 4-5 years.

When did you start first making music and what did it sound like? Well I was in a few bands in high school and to be honest with you we were so terrible and the music we made was shocking. But it was a lot of fun and we thought we were pretty sweet at the time. I got into producing music at university which was only a couple of years back. Originally I wanted to make beats like FlyLo but it kinda just turned out the way it did. It's good though, I embrace it now instead of trying to sound like someone else.

How long had you been producing before you released the 'Dreams EP'? Not very long, maybe like a year. I finished 'Dreams' just as I finished my Uni degree which is where I was learning production. It all kind of came together at the end there.

Tell us about your production set up – what do you use? Well for 'Dreams' I used a program called Cubase but since then I've switched to Ableton. I found myself using it more and more and it's very easy to get an idea down quickly. However it can also be unbelievably frustrating and I still have a lot to learn about the program. Other than that I record guitar and vocals just in my bedroom and there's no real method to the rest of it, I just try and find interesting sounds and put them together.

And what about when you play live? How does that work? I don't use a laptop to play live. I have all my beats and my synths in a Roland SP-404 and I build on that with singing, a guitar, a drum pad and several effects. Its a good setup, I've tried to make it as live as possible which can be a bit difficult sometimes. I've made a few changes to it recently so it works much better than it used to, but it will keep evolving as I write more music.

Speaking of playing live, you recently supported James Blake on his tour of Australia. How was it? How did the crowd respond to your music? It was nothing short of incredible! It was a dream come true to support him on his Australian tour, he was a big reason I started making this sort of music and on top of all that I got to travel around Australia and NZ playing in some of the biggest and best venues in front of thousands of people. The crowd responded really well which i was stoked about. I was on pretty early most nights, about half an hour after doors but towards the end of my set the venue would be pretty full. It was a very intense week; lots of drinking, late nights, early morning flights. But I can't complain, it was great. I'll never forget it.

Did you get to hang out with James much? If so, what would you say you learnt from him? I did hang out with James a bit, he's the nicest guy and his band are really cool too. I probably spent more time with them because he had a lot of things to do and people to meet. I chatted to James about 'The Wire' a bit and how good it was, and I spoke with his band about how they met P Diddy one time which was pretty funny. I was very interested to see how he did everything live so I learnt a lot in that respect. Hopefully one day my live show can be something like his.

You’ve been working on a new EP is that correct? What were you looking to achieve with it and how does it differ from the 'Dreams EP'? Yes, it's called 'Slow Motion Music'. I've been working on it for the past year, but its really come together in the last few months. I was having a lot of trouble writing music a year ago and i wasn't really happy with anything I'd done, but recently everything just came together and it really took shape. I've gotten much better at production this past year so the sound is a bit more developed than Dreams but it still has the same charm. I guess I was just trying to follow up with something just as heartfelt and with a good story and theme.

When can we expect a release? Within the next two months I'd say. I don't want to give and exact date because nothing is locked in yet but I'm eager to have it out soon.

You’ve just recorded an achingly beautiful cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Sound Of Silence’. Why did you choose this to cover? Is it particularly special to you for some reason? Last year I did a crowd funding campaign to get 'Dreams' pressed on vinyl. It was really rewarding to have fans contribute towards getting my first EP pressed. The standard donation was $20 and it got you a copy, however if you decided to contribute a bit more I would cover a song of your choosing. That's actually how this cover came about. I do love the original so I was excited when the guy who'd made the donation chose this track. I wanted to make it quite different from the original, kind of along the same lines as my Snoop Dogg cover of 'Beautiful'. I'm really happy with how it turned out and the guy I did it for loved it too.

Who are currently some of your biggest musical influences of the past few years? Last few years I've been listening to a lot of Thrupence and Ta-ku in particular, plus a whole bunch of other electronic music and hip-hop. I've also been listening to a lot of mixes and I spend a lot of time on soundcloud listening to music as well.

Tell us a little bit about the mix you’ve recorded for us...This mix goes everywhere! I tried to put a wide variety of tracks in there. It's pretty much the sort of stuff I've been listening to lately. All the tracks are quite different and I enjoyed the challenge of trying to mix them together and make it cohesive. I also tried to include some music in there that people probably wouldn't think I listen to. It's just a little window into the sort of music I'm into at the moment.

What’s on the cards for Oliver Tank for the rest of 2013 and beyond? I'll be dropping that second EP soon, then I'll start work on an album, plus I've got a few other projects and collaborations I'm working on. I'll be keeping busy with shows for the rest of the year as well. I think 2014 will be a defining year for me. I'm excited for it.

Cassy: "Be A Little More Unusual"

She’s one of Ibiza’s favorite DJs, with residencies at the famed Monday afternoon fiesta, Circoloco at DC-10, for whom she mixed ‘The New Resident of Circoloco at DC10 Ibiza’ in 2011 and Cocoon Ibiza, for whom she mixed Cocoon Heroes alongside Joris Voorn in 2012. There’s no denying the mixing chops of anyone who’s scored residencies at two of the most premier techno and house parties in Ibiza, not to mention her residency at the famed Berghain/Panoramabar in Berlin. So it’s of little wonder really that Cassy - known to her family as Catherine Britton - recently weaved together the 71st edition of one of the most illustrious mix series' around.  We chatted to the UK native about what it’s like to undertake such a task, the difficulty of the compilation process and keeping things a 'little more unusual'.

So you recently joined with Safehouse Management. How has that been? Great. I mean, it’s the very beginning, so I don’t have a lot to report. But they’re extremely friendly, lovely, super professional people, so that’s all I can say for now.

It’s a major accomplishment though, it’s one of the biggest and best booking agencies around. Yeah, it’s super great. I think maybe sometimes with big agencies or something you think its good from the outside, though it might not be so good for oneself. It’s also very much, I think, a matter of fitting or taste or belonging somehow. But I think we are very good match. It seems to be the right size for both of us.

When and how did Fabric initially approach you about putting together the compilation? I think Judy and Craig had asked me a while ago, but I could never time it right, because other mixes I did were coming out at the same time or were supposed to be coming out at the same time as then the Fabric mix would have been released, so it wasn’t the right timing. Now it finally fit.

How long ago was this? It must have been around two years ago, but I can’t really be too sure.

You’ve put together several major compilations before, but this is your first with Fabric. Is it still special for you to put together a mix? To put together a mix is always special. If you really have to put one together that’s going to be out there as your mix that you’ve done, that's something very special, because it’s out there forever. It’s different to a live mix, because that’s always dependent on the situation. Even if you listen back to a live mix, it’s different than listening to something you’ve done, especially for a mix CD.

Can you tell me a little bit about what it’s like to put together a mix CD? Umm, it’s very…well, I guess the more experience you have, the easier it gets, and the better you feel when you’re doing it. I think it’s a good thing to choose stuff that is quite timeless, or if you have a specific idea for something, that delivers a certain mood. It really depends on who is asking for the mix CD – what label it is, or who you’re doing it for. And I guess your personal taste at that moment as well, combined with who you are as a DJ, and what you want to represent. That as well I think is very important to consider.

How does the label or who you’re putting it together for effect how you put together the mix? Say for Fabric. How did that change things? It’s something where you know you can trust and make choices and take records that are maybe not heard so much or are a bit lesser known, or are from a certain area that is only known to connoisseurs and not so much to the general public. So you trust that you can do something – if I can use the word, [it’s] more special.

You can take more chances? Yeah, be a little more unusual, I’d say.

How do you go about selecting songs? I guess it depends on what you’ve done before, how experienced you are, and how you work. Some people probably have something in the back of their head for a very long time and constantly keep making notes. And some people probably just do everything at once. I guess I knew I had to come up with a track list at some point, and then I pressured myself to get stuff together over three or four days because I knew maybe later I might not have so much time. I would have a solid stock of records or tracks already down so I don’t have to choose for something last minute, then you’re not happy, and you get frustrated doing the mix.

You laid the basic foundations of the mix in just three or four days? That's fast! I think so, yes. Well, I guess, it’s in the back of your head in the way that you know where you’re going to be looking. If you’d never thought about it, it would be, but the actual process of putting it together, that was the three or four days, in the sense that I listened to all the tracks I was thinking of before that I had in mind, or I discovered a few more, and added them. When you know you’re going to be doing a mix CD, and you’re in a club listening to music, you’re like ‘oh, this track!’ Or ‘oh, this producer!’ So I guess it’s in the back of your head already.

I love the artwork for the album, it’s very unique. Did you have a hand in selecting that? Well for every Fabric CD, they pick an artist and his pictures or paintings or drawings or whatever it is, and you get to pick out of four or five different ones. And I liked this one the best. It’s a series, so it’s quite similar, but this one was more outstanding one I think.
