Culoe de Song: Hello from House-Nation

$

Being signed to Soulistic, the Eshowe born, Afro-house DJ and producer Culolethu Zulu - famously known as Culoe De Song - is part of a label that's busy putting South Africa on the map in a big way. With fellow Soulistic artist Black Coffee having just debuted at Circoloco at DC-10 in Ibiza, and Culoe playing his captivating afro-house sets around the world, these guys are making waves and turning heads and ears towards the tip of Africa we call home.

Culoe tends to shy away from the lime-light. That's not to say that he's not in it, but his humble demeanor keeps Culoe a little under the radar at times. With his new album 'Exodus' on the horizon, and with him being quite particular with how he wants it to be received, Pulse took the opportunity to catch up with Culoe to fire him a few questions. He's also put together an exclusive podcast for us too.

(Download here)

Pulse: You keep a low profile in terms of media appearances and your overall presence in the lime light unlike other artists. Is this a true reflection of yourself? It begs the question, who is Culoe - is he the quiet shy guy we all presume him to be? Culoe De Song: Culoe is God’s crazy idea of a shy guy! I find myself appearing where I’m supposed to appear and talk where I’m supposed to talk! I’m basically where my energy is in a moment! So I’m not sure of my shy degree.

We know you are of Zulu Heritage, please tell us about how your heritage influenced your music, as well as the significance to your name? I grew up in the homelands of Eshowe, a town centered in Zululand. So traditional and urban music is something I’d hear everyday growing up; from taxis, wedding ceremonies, shops and radio-carrying locals passing by. So all the above is part of my heritage. Rhythmic music and social desires in Zululand influenced me big time! My name Culoelethu actually means “Our Song”.

Here at Pulse Radio, we have great love and respect for Soulistic Music, with artists like yourself, Black Coffee, Kabila, Sai & Rabitone, Soulstar, and now the young talent of DJ Shimza. Can you tell us about the working environment at the label? It’s crazy! It’s young! Big dreams are an everyday thing and we inspire each other in a number of ways.

Tell us about working with Black Coffee. Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed by his sheer aura and what's your relationship like with him? There’s no one like Black Coffee, from his character and presence. A true definition of a good man and as a result, we have a good brotherly relationship because of his forever “Good” influence.

2009 saw your release on Innervisions, one of the great pioneering labels in Germany. How did that come about? Innervisions received a number of emails about my music after my first visit to Europe in ’08. So from there it’s been a fulfilled blessing.

Around the same time you started performing internationally in the USA, Europe and even Asia. You have performed at Sonar in Barcelona, Djoon in Paris, WMC in Miami and you just recently got back from a quick Euro tour of Paris, Munich and Geneva. Can you tell us about your experiences and highlights performing in these regions? Which event or festival are you still dying to play at? That festival is yet to be born! In Africa! Otherwise, I’d love to play a big festival like Tomorrowland or Coachella. I love the arts and I feel these festivals give artists that space to fully express themselves. DJing is an art, and my attitude in a big stage is to tell a story. All my tours have been inspiring, meeting different cultural escapes, that big idea that a boy from a smalltown in Zululand can DJ in Bern or Sao Paulo etc. The fact that this has come true is really big for me!

Having performed internationally and locally where would you place the bar on the South African industry when compared to other countries. Are we really where everyone thinks we are? I think Africa in general is receiving some unique love these days. The world scene is really looking forward to some African elements, so I do believe that we are somewhere up there.

At Pulse Radio, we are trying to spread the word of the growing scenes in the rest of Africa, not just South Africa. You have played quite a bit around the rest of the continent, can you tell us about your reception and observation? Is Africa really rising? Africa is rising for sure. You know, when you’re a young African boy picturing the idea of the term “international” it’s really exciting! I’ve played in neighbouring countries and the response always excites me. It becomes “world-like” for me, even in a neighbouring country. I think it’s because I’ve always dreamt of being a Gypsy of some sort, a nomad, so regardless of where I go, my movement is world-like.

News on the grapevine is that you, kind sir, are working on a new album called 'Exodus'. Without revealing too much can you tell us a little about the album; the meaning of the name, whom you've featured with and what is different from this album compared to the last one. Also, when is it due for release? Exodus is a big album for me. It’s been a serious journey thus far and I’ve got a lot to be thankful for. So I’m meeting my artistic desires and most importantly the people in this album. I’ve worked with the likes of Thandiswa Mazwai, Thandi Draai, Sunnyboy (guitarist), Soulstar, Shota to name a few and live collaborations. I'vr got some international remixes that I’ll be including in the album. It’s best of both worlds, as my fans would say, “You got two sides bro"...so maybe this is true! I’m crossing back and forth the ocean that isolates my artistic influences.

I find it superlative how your organic African sound has become successful not only here but in Europe. It removes the stigma that you have to sound European to sell to Europeans. What would you attribute to your success? When I listen to songs like 'Webaba' and 'The Bright Forest' I envision that element of excitement I used to get when I think of the term “international”. As a South African playing in Germany or wherever, I’m an international in that particular country and so the energy I bring from my home ground vs the energy of my foreign musical followers is what has made me successful in my international career. I think it’s that energy called Truth; it is something I never planned but has happened.

How did you go about compiling this podcast? Is there anything different that you did here compared to your DJ sets and what is your favourite track in this podcast? This mix tells you exactly where I’m at right now. I got some of my most favorite tracks in this mix. They keep me going wherever I play. I’m loving my new single with Soulstar, 'My Sunshine' in this mix. This song has got me excited about my upcoming album.

Lastly, where do you see yourself taking the music five or ten years from now? In the same breath, what are you looking to achieve through your music? I’m looking to achieve the bigger picture, which is to build a Culoe De Song brand and spread the music as broadly as I can. I just want to inspire others because I'm a product of inspiration myself.

Podcast Tracklisting:
1. Agoria feat Carl Craig – Speechless
2. Jullian Gomes feat Bobby – Love Song 28 (Stuff’s essential mix)
3. Garth & Grel – Inhliziyo Yam (Darque’s Define Dub)

Booom! Ibiza loses Venue Lease

Plagued Ibiza venue Booom! has reportedly lost its license to operate, after a series of problems have hit the club.

Possibly one of the biggest non-starters in Ibiza over the last couple of years, the club was spearheded by Danny Whittle and Guisepe Cipriani only to have rumours spread across the island of the delays to the opening night, which eventually saw their opening residencies switch venues at the last minute. Vantage Investments - the company acting as landlord of the club - made the company change the name of the club from Bomba Ibiza to Booom! after it came to light that Cipriani was committing copyright infringment. It's also come to light that the company were made aware of the forecoming closure on July 2nd.

As of November 30th Booom shall cease to operate - you can check the above statement, taken from the clubs landing page for official confirmation.

Beyond 'Afrobeat': JD Twitch, Midland & The Autonomous Africa project

JD Twitch is one half of legendary Glasgow outfit Optimo, who - alongside Jonnie Wilkes - steered the musical direction of their city’s most iconic weekly club night, Optimo (Espacio)as well as touring the world extensively under the Optimo banner. Last year though, Twitch struck out on his own with a project that was close to his heart.

‘Autonomous Africa’ was the first in a planned series of annual EPs, to feature productions from Twitch and other likeminded producers with the dual intention of raising money, as well as awareness, for the problems being faced throughout Africa as a direct result of outside interference from other countries. The first installment in 2012 saw Twitch linking with Auntie Flo for an EP of four Afro-inspired club tunes, with all proceeds donated to the Médecins Sans Frontières medical and humanitarian aid organisation. “The motivation was simply to do something,” Twitch told Pulse. “Because I’m in the privileged position of being able to do that, and putting a record together and getting it out there isn’t a very hard thing to do. Raising money is the most important motivation, but I felt it was a good opportunity to perhaps make people aware of and think about things happening in Africa”.

The second installment of the Autonomous Africa project has just been released, and this time Midland joins the collective, recruited by Twitch after it was discovered that Midland spent his early years in Tanzania, with his parents involved with the Mtandika Mission; which in the end was chosen as the beneficiary for the funds raised by the second release. “I played a gig with Midland in Glasgow last year, and we stayed in touch,” Twitch told Pulse. “Through conversing with him, I discovered his parents ran the charity that raised funds for the Mtandika Mission in Tanzania. He had already suggested contributing to a future 12", but when I heard about his parent's charity I felt that was the perfect thing to try to raise funds for, and it gave the whole release a bit more of a personal slant.”

The project’s mantra also carries across to the creative direction of the work heard on both EPs, with Twitch confirming that he was looking to do a lot more with his work than taking the common route of sampling a piece of African percussion, and passing it off as an ‘Afro’ track. “It's disrespectful to the original artist, just sticking a big kick drum on top of their work,” Twitch says. “I can only really speak about my tracks, and while they do contain samples, I hope use them in a bit more of an imaginative way”. With the 2013 edition of Autonomous Africa now available to purchase on vinyl, Pulse caught up with Twitch, as well as Midland, and poased a couple of quick questions to find out more about what's driven the project this year.

How do you feel the different creative approaches came together across the different tracks, in terms of forming the whole EP? There was no brief given to the other artists. It didn't have to be an African sounding or inspired track, but I guess everyone felt inclined to go in that direction. Auntie Flo had already made his track for his live sets and kindly offered it up, while Midland had a recording of the children from the Mtandika mission singing and wanted to base his track around that. I normally work very slowly but my two tracks came together very quickly and I made them with my own DJ sets in mind. All the tracks are distinctly different, but I feel they all compliment each other and don't sound out of place alongside each other.

While the focus of the music itself has an African theme, the approach is quite different to the standard sampling of African percussion you often hear. How did you to work these different creative ideas into the tracks on the EP? The Olaiya track samples an African cover version of James Brown, whose music was enormously influential on Afro beat. As James Brown is probably the most sampled artist ever, I liked the idea of sampling a cover version of his and adding a (manipulated) drum break from his original song on top as the basis of the track. The other track JuJu contains a micro sample I took from an incredibly rare Nigerian record that sells for several hundred pounds. I don't own a copy as I would never pay that amount for a rare record - the prices for rare 70s and 80s African records can be insane. I took the sample from an MP3 that was on the Ebay listing, as I liked the incredibly-lo fi sound of the low bitrate MP3, and imagined I was liberating this incredibly exclusive record from the world of a serious record collector.

The objective is also slightly different to your average charity project, in that it’s meant to draw attention to the problems caused by outside interference in the affairs of African countries. What inspired the focus on this particular topic? It’s something I have been interested in and concerned about for a very long time, and something that doesn't really get discussed very much. We hear about atrocities, wars and droughts in Africa but little about how the actions of other countries and multinationals are equally devastating in their own way. I thought it important to highlight this issue, as while we may think we are powerless to change anything, collectively people have great power to change things based on their purchasing decisions and actions.

Tell us a bit specifically about how you hope to make an impact with this release? If it leads a few people think about it, then it has been a positive thing, especially if they act on it and tell other people. If I can inspire one person to do something, then it has been a positive. I don't want to preach to anyone but rather help spread information and foster discussion. Of course this is a small run 12" that will have little impact on the world, but I am fortunate that I am in a position to be able to do something, however small that might be. In my opinion, doing something is better than being concerned about these issues but not actually ever doing anything to address them.

This particular EP will be raising funds for the Mtandika Mission in Tanzania. There’s a bit more of a personal aspect this time, as it was the country where Midland grew up. Midland, can you tell us a little about your connection with the country? Midland: I moved Dar- Es-Salaaam in Tanzania with my Parents in 1990 at the age of three, they had previously been out there for 10 years up until 1986 as my Dad was an engineer building roads out in the deepest bush of Tanzania. We lived there for another eleven years, a time I spent wearing no shoes, surfing most days and generally being a bit of a menace. I went back to boarding school at the age of nine, but came back for holidays until I was thirteen. Africa still does, and will always, hold a massively special place in my heart.

When I had just started school in England, my Nanny and a hugely special part of our family, Anna, died from AIDS leaving two young daughters, Jossie and Lafsa behind. My parents promised to educate them, and the school they sent them to was run by a nun called Sister Barberina Mhagala. Through this, they came in to contact with other AIDS orphans and began to find sponsorship from people back in England. When Sister Barberina retired from the Primary School in 2005 she decided to start a Trade School for Orphans and children who couldn't afford school fees, and lots of the previous sponsors began to send money for the education of these children. This was eight years ago, and the school has changed out of all recognition thanks to people’s ongoing generosity. More info can be found at www.actioninafrica.org/about-mtandika.php

What's the future for Autonomous Africa?
I hope it will be an annual thing so there should be a third 12" in the summer of 2014. I don't want to pester anyone to participate and would rather it came about organically, and am open to all approaches from people who would like to contribute.

Manhattan Bridge Party Busted by Police

New Yorkers have historically hosted raves and illegal free parties in every type of venue imaginable from abandoned warehouses to underneath highway overpasses to empty fields. Remember these photos from an illegal party held in an abandoned subway station? This past Saturday night marked the latest high profile illegal party to have been busted by the police.

The party, which took place on the pedestrian walkway of the Manhattan Bridge, was very publicly planned and announced beforehand on various social media networks. Run by an organization called The Xander Experience, founded by New Yorker Alex Xander, the group’s mission is as follows: “We do not throw parties, we create experiences. We throw electronic events in the craziest places, and we fill it with the greatest people in the world. We are an entirely new world within New York City. Welcome to Xandernation.” Past Xandernation events have been thrown in abandoned fields, Brooklyn mansions, and boats.

As the final Xandernation event of the season, promoters aimed to take the Manhattan Bridge event “to the next level.”  The party's unique location provided amazing nighttime views of the water and the New York skyline.  For those unfamiliar with this type of experience, event promoters included the following frequently asked questions about the party:

Throughout the night, partygoers were kept up to date with the status of the party from a slight change in location on the bridge and information about watching a live stream of the party to details about the police busting the event and Alex Xander’s eventual arrest.

Check out the official party recap video as well as some taken by guests at the event.

Space Ibiza Turns 24 Years Old with Fatboy Slim!

$

It was all smiles at Space for the club’s 24th birthday celebration. From the staff in their yellow smiley faced t-shirts, to the always fun and overwhelmingly sized smiley face inflatables adorning the tops of the main dance floors, comforting smiles accompany clubbers throughout the We Love… journey, ensuring everyone has that extra dose of happiness in their back pocket. Appropriately 24 DJs were selected to kick of the birthday celebration, beginning every week at 7pm sharp on the Sunset Terrace, and Pulse Radio’s Shea Hausen was on hand to check out all the action.

Expert graphic designers turned t-shirt design engineers Wasted Heroes hosted the Sunset Terrace this week, handing out slick tees to a lucky few. Colour Series label owner Jem Haynes and friend Jason Bye warmed things up for crowd favorites Jaymo & Andy George, who have been churning out hit after hit on there record label Moda Black, which has also seen releases from the likes of Hot Since 82 and Huxley.

Early on, the covered terrace, hosted by Pulse Radio, was the place to be, with French native and Cadenza favorite Technasia warming things up with his stomping, momentum heavy brand of techno. From the raised platform in the middle of the terrace to each and every corner of the room, bodies were packing in for an evening of feel-good, bass heavy house music that had the crowd erupting with applause and screams, ready for anything the 24-year-old club could throw their way.  Joined by friends, Technasia could even be seen tossing his hands up to the music, pumping the crowd up just a bit more. Clearly everyone was up for helping to celebrate the big date.

Joris Voorn took the reigns just after Technasia, giving us a huge opening track that sent chills down the spine of just about everyone in the room. After an almost endless build, the track finally landed to frantic roars from the crowd. Joris was now fully in control. With hardly a moment to catch your breath, Voorn kept the energy squarely in his corner, with his pumping and jumping brand of tech house rocking the crowd. Dropping classic tracks such as Joris’ own ‘The Secret,' moving into a more melodic feel towards the end of his set with his remix of Marc Romboy and Stephan Bodzin’s ‘Callisto,’ we got to see all sides of Joris Voorn, taking us on a journey that spanned more than a few of his known styles. Pepe Rosello, owner of Space, even stepped in for a quick hug and a picture with the Dutchman himself.

The man seemingly born in a Hawaiian shirt, Fatboy Slim, was set to take the stage in the main room at 2am. An immediate shift within the club was obvious, as people scrambled from every one of Space’s many rooms to secure their spot in the main room. The legendary jock opened with a massive countdown, leading us right into his jam with Riva Starr, ‘Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat,’ followed by a hard-hitting electro set that had the crowd jumping and throwing themselves as high into the air as possible. He burst onto the Discoteca stage with remixes of tracks like Groove Armada’s classic ‘I See You Baby (Shaken That Ass),’ to edits of newer tracks such as the unstoppable Disclosure’s new smash, ‘White Noise,’ and Gary Beck’s slamming ‘Get Down.’

He kept the crowd at full tilt an full hour and a half, expertly mixing massive tunes as only one of the world’s favorite jocks can. Always a showman, Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, brought an air horn to wail on along with his music, even jumping up on top of the decks and singing along as a sensory overload of lasers, confetti blasts, C02 guns and We Love… smiley-faced balloons bounced around the crowd.

The always-dapper 2ManyDJs popped onto the decks just after Fatboy finished up. Using the energy Fatboy Slim had created, in classic form, the duo from Belgium expertly mixed their way through a plethora of genres, heading into techno territory with the timeless ‘Plastic Dreams’ by Jaydee, to trance-esque fields with tracks like Oasis’ ‘Shoop,’ over to ultra cool and funky disco beats like Hamilton Bohannon’s ‘Let's Start The Dance.’ In true 2manyDJs fashion, the duo kept things jumping hard, putting their own twist on most every track, including edits like crowd favorite ‘Girls’ by the Beasty Boys. The two continued their set right up until 5am when the always fun Foamo took over, finishing the night in style, the crowd unwavering in their pure passion and elation for one of the world’s best club nights at one of the world’s best clubs, We Love… at Space Ibiza.

And as the sun slowly started to rise, the music finally tempered off, and the mass of faithful slowly sauntered out of the club, it hit us – Space is a wonderful 24 years old today, and after a night like this, it’s no surprise why it’s lasted this long. Happy birthday Space.

What's that? A herbal cigarette that's worth near on $100? And Snoop's selling it? Of course he isn't - but you can purchase this piece of merchandising for use on his Snoopify app.

Essentially, the merchandising bandwagon has gone off the chart as reports come in that snoop is selling a STICKER for his app - which blings up your photos with backgrounds, clothes and more. The sticker is the latest to join various other images, including girls, money and jewels of various description.

The app offers fans a $1.99 package of 24 'stickers' that can be used to decorate photos in a 'classic Snoop' or 'Rasta-inspired Snoop' style - and the spliff sticker is the latest to be 'rolled' out. When asked to comment, Snoop D.O.G.G's manager Nick Adler, told the Wall Street Journal that the sticker had been downloaded over 15 times. "I was shocked," Adler commented.

"But hey, this is a new world."

Only two more work weeks until we set sail to the Playa! For those who will be experiencing the week-long festival in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for the first time, take a look at the following Burning Man survival guides, created by the people behind Burning Man as well as experienced burners who want to share what they’ve learned over the years.  After doing our virgin Burn last year, we thought the following videos were the best in making sure that we didn't get caught unprepared.  The 2013 edition of the festival will take place shortly from Monday, August 26th to Monday, September 2nd.  We'll see you at the Burn.

The extensive official guide put together by the festival organizers is considered “mandatory reading for all Burning Man participants,” and most of the following reviews suggest that it be your starting point when learning more about what to expect.  There is a downloadable PDF version, which burners can refer to anytime offline.

Husband and wife travel bloggers “Gone With the Wynns” have created this general video overview of what to expect at the festival.

They also created this video with tips about using bicycles as transportation to get around, the concept of "gifting," and the necessity of good goggles and sunglasses to protect your eyes.

This humorous video highlights some of the basic items burners shouldn’t forget to pack such as socks, gloves, wet naps, and buckets and provides some helpful tips about surviving the week.

The inevitable dust storms in the desert can be damaging to your lungs, skin, and eyes. This video explains how to protect yourself from the elements with face masks.

Martin Buttrich, Matthias Tanzmann and Davide Squillace are the world renowned DJs and producers who have formed Better Lost Than Stupid, who are landing at electronic music mecca DC-10 on Saturday August 17th for a night of musical exploration under their new exciting joint pseudonym.

Having already played a breakout set as the new trio last year at DC-10 to much praise and adulation, the news that Ibiza and DC-10 will once again be treated to another special night of music sure to be nothing short of magical has been met with plenty of excitement and buzz around the island. The trio will perform a back-to-back-to-back live and DJ session all night long at arguably the White Isle’s most revered venue.

Both Tanzmann and Squillace have become firm favorites at DC-10 over the past few years with their exciting brand of funky, groove laden tech house. Together, they have become a formidable partnership behind the decks, regularly teaming up for much loved back-to-back sessions in the terrace. The new Better Lost Than Stupid project has come off the back of playing several high profile shows with Desolat co-founder, Martin Buttrich. The three artists quickly saw that the gigs were simply more fun in each other’s company. Since then, they’ve played as the trio at major festivals like Exit in Serbia and Electric Zoo in New York, as well as a one-off show at DC-10 last season.

The trio will be playing a mix of live and DJ sessions until the early hours of the morning, bringing their forward thinking, fresh and unique take on tech house, with plenty of sweet tribal rhythms, hypnotic grooves and funky, pumping bass lines – this is one you don’t want to miss. Be sure to check out Better Lost Than Stupid on Saturday, August 17 at Ibiza’s DC-10.

Watch: Lady Gaga Gets Butt Naked In The Woods

There's been a lot of news surrounding Lady Gaga of late. First came word that the pop star was going EDM on her next album, working with the likes of Zedd and sampling from Israeli trance group Infected Mushroom. Then Deadmau5 had a dig at her for posing nude in an art video (which resulted in the hilarious outcome of her fans sending the 'Mau5 twitter death threats).

If you were wondering what exactly this art video where Gaga gets bare-assed in actually is, it's a Kickstarter project to fund the Marina Abramovic Institute, which is to be "an experimental space to conduct research and host workshops, public lectures, and residencies, and will serve as a venue through which the public may experience and interact with works of long durational performance." As Deadmau5 put it, she basically "howls in the woods and noones around." Watch below.

Hot Chip, Frankie Knuckles and more to appear on Donna Summer remix album

$

The music of the late Donna Summer is to be celebrated and given some modern reworkings by the likes of Hot Chip, Frankie Knuckles, Chromeo, and of course Giorgio Moroder when a new remix album honouring the disco diva's career lands in October.

'Love to Love You Donna' will be officially released on October 22nd through Verve Records and will feature the 'Godfather Of House" Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper's reworking of 'Hot Stuff,' Hot Chip's take on 'Sunset People' from the 'Bad Girls' album, and Chromeo & Oliver's remix of 'Love Is In Control (Finger On the Trigger).'

The album will also include Giorgio Moroder's 2013 remix of the #1 hit he co-wrote with Summer back in 1976, 'Love To Love You Baby'. Moroder (who is currently sporting his trademark 70s moustache once again) premiered the remix for the very first time during his DJ set at the Way Out West festival in Gothenberg, Sweden, last week (see below video). The neo-disco cut has distinct, American EDM tinges at times, which is no suprise considering the fact that Moroder has been in the studio recently with young EDM guns like Avicii.

Throughout her career Summer raked up a total of 32 hit singles on the U.S. Hot 100, with 14 of those reaching the top 10, before she passed away in May 2012. Between 1976 and the end of 1982, she had more top 10 hits (12) than any other act.
