Deadmau5 - after hinting that he would be releasing new music as soon as his contract with Ultra Records ended - has stuck to his word by giving out a free download of 'Suckfest 9001' on his Soundcloud page.

A few weeks back, Deadmau5 took to twitter to share disgust over a 'certain record label' and promised that he would share new productions as soon as he was allowed to. Now, he's made the track 'Suckfest 9001' available on his soundcloud - and then went one step futher by making the track available for download. The internet subsequently went beserk and the link died after reaching maximum download limits; but you can grab the free track from a fans Mirror Link or preview it in the Soundcloud player above.

Accompanying the 'release', deadmau5 took to his favourtie soundboard, Twitter, to 'thank' his fans for their patience on the production front and for contributing to his global success: "I owe you guys a Ferrari. For real, Nearly cried when it came off the truck, this is the LEAST I can do. Much much more to come your way.”

Thanks, man. Enjoy your Ferrari, won't you.

Sourdoreille, a French music website collective of music journalists and videographers, decided to interview Carl Craig the day after Detroit's announcement of bankruptcy. The interview takes an interesting approach, by having Carl show photographs of famous landmarks, people, and events in Detroit that Carl holds dear to him. It's a nice insight into the city that has a rich history, despite its current financial state. From the Detroit Institute of Art with its famous mural by Diego Rivera to photos of the first DEMF (known today as Movement Electronic Music Festival), from the Heidelberg Project to the Music Hall Center, Carl Craig gives his personal experiences and stories and what makes each place special to Detroit. As to the future of Detroit, he comments it may not change until more people come in to this beautiful, meaningful city.

It seems that quite a few of Amnesia Ibiza's over 725k fans on Facebook aren't looking forward to Paris' Foam and Diamonds event as much as they might have been expecting when locking her in for a month-long handbag residency. Here are some of the funniest reactions thus far...

There are those who always go to the extreme...

And the first comment could summarize the situation as shortly and sweetly as:

iOS Is The Clear Winner For Making Music On The Go

$

While the Apple App store has music apps budding left and right for its mobile iOS users, it seems that the Android platform does not. An exploration of the topic by Synthtopia.com brings out a few answers as to why fellow friends with Samsung Galaxies or HTCs will not be able to perform to the same high level output as their Apple counterparts. There are three reasons that are responsible for this: Audio latency problems, device fragmentation, and operating system fragmentation.

According to Musique Tactile, the latency (or lag) from when you touch the screen to when the sound comes out when creating music is 350 milliseconds on Android phones as compared to only 5.8 milliseconds on the iOS. These may seem like tiny fractions of time, but musicians know, timing is everything when it comes to playing music. Musique Tactile provides audio examples of this latency problem.

Open Signal has filed reports on what Android developers have been struggling with: device fragmentation and operating system fragmentation. In short, because Android OS is available to thousands of different devices with different capabilities and screen sizes, this poses a problem for app developers when they are designing an app that has to accommodate for those differences. There are currently 12,000 variations. Optimally, the developer would have to design the same app 12,000 ways in order for it to reach the widest audience. In stark contrast, iOS app developers have only 4 formats to design for (the landscape and portrait home screen for iPhone and iPad). This allows the app to be more universal and able to function properly.  The graphic from Synthtopia below illustrates just how many Android devices there are out there today, and why it is so difficult to design apps for it.

Operating System Fragmentation is a fancy way for saying that many Android users do not update their OS, in fact Open Signal reports that only 5% of users update to the most recent OS. Most people are using the version created in 2010, Gingerbread. Once more iOS prevails with the fact that 95% of its users update their phones to iOS6. App developers for iOS can optimize their apps for the only latest version of the iOS and still reach a wide audience.  The following graphic from Synthtopia.com shows the distribution of users with different versions of the Android OS.

If you plan to be making music on the go, these findings lean heavily toward the iOS. We'd love to hear comments on people's experiences with music making on Androids as well, let us know in the comments below!

New Documentary With Cassy on Dancing and Clubbing Needs Crowdfunding!

$

There is a documentary that is coming out soon that takes on the task of explaining Europe's life on the dance floor, but it needs a little bit of crowdfunding before it can be released in theaters. Starring Cassy, the documentary "Meditations on the Dancefloor" directed by Berlin native Marietta Kesting, follows her throughout Europe. Berlin, Fabric in London, Club Rex in Paris, and DC10 and Amnesia in ibiza are a few places the documentary will touch upon, using Cassy's gigs at those locations to answer Marietta's questions of what makes our scene so irresistible, where does our constant attraction to the dance floor come from, and the encounters that arise from being in clubs.

This is clearly a professional and thoughtful attempt to document the electronic music scene as it has come to be today in Europe. There are a few older documentaries out there that show how the music took root and how it blossomed, but there isn't anything documenting its high point today as a widespread cultural phenomenon. Marietta has entailed one of the most highly respected DJs of our time to help tell that story. Landing residencies at Panorama Bar in Berlin, one of the most musically selective places in the world, and now at Output in Brooklyn, Cassy is the clear choice for this modern tale. We look forward to seeing the finished piece!

The crowd funding goal is $7,000 for post production, sound editing, and color correction costs. If you donate the following amounts, these are the prizes you will receive:

$10 - Name in film credits

$20 - Name in film credits and neon glow stick

$50 - DJ-Turntable slipmat with movie quote

$100 - Name in film credits, invitation to premiere party

$500 - Signed Filmstill, name printed in film credits, and invitation to film premiere party

VIDEO: Origins of EDM Nightlife Photography 'No Credentials'

Now here's a documentary that's fun to get into: nightlife photography in the electronic music scene. This film not only goes into depth into the history of what got the photo craze at nightclubs started, but it also follows two photographers as they attempt to sneak into Ultra with a falsely recreated festival production pass. The documentary takes you behind the scenes as they go on the artist boat and artist lounge area, where technically no filming is allowed. With anecdotes from Kirill, the famous New York City photographer, as well as a collection of recognized videographers/editors and photographers who come to these shows to capture the EDM lifestyle, this documentary pretty accurately represents a portion of the photographers that flock the scene. Download: Four Tet Remixes Canadian Band DIANA

Following a premiere on BBC Radio One and Rinse FM last weekend, Kieran 'Four Tet' Hebden officially unveiled his new track 'Kool FM' yesterday via soundcloud, which is set to feature on the forthcoming album 'Beautiful Rewind'.

To say there have been mixed reactions to the track is an understatement, with its raw, experimental flavour both delighting and confusing fans in equal measure. "This is just weird.. or I missed the point. Is it supposed to be some kind of satire about radios or something?" wrote one bewildered fan, which prompted Hebden to post on his facebook that he sees 'Beautiful Rewind' and 'Kool FM' as "new age records".

For those who weren't too enamoured with 'Kool FM,' a new Four Tet remix has arrived of the song 'Perpetual Surrender' by Canadian indie band DIANA, which is a little more straightforward, but still very much Four Tet - his highly recognisable drum patterns underpinning Carmen Elle's beautiful vocals. You can download the remix below - all it's going to cost you is your email address.

DJ Awards Nominees Announced For 2013

The annual DJ Awards are back for 2013, set to take place on Wednesday 25th of September at Pacha, Ibiza. Now in its 16th year, the awards are one of the biggest events in the Ibizan clubbing calendar, recognising DJs in nine categories ranging from music genres through to Best Newcomer and Best Electronic Live Performance.

With genre classifications becoming more and more blurred, the DJ Awards categories can often be a little perplexing. For instance, last year Maceo Plex took out the Deep House award while Tiesto was honoured the Best Electro House jock (granted he's not exactly trance these days, but electro house?). Still, it's all just a bit of fun...right?

The nominees and categories for this year have been announced which you can check out in full below following a video of the highlights from 2012. Voting has now opened here and will close at the end of August.

Drug Bust At Splendour In The Grass, Police Seize 1/2Kg Of Contraband

$

There was a heavy presence of NSW Police at North Byron Parklands in Yelgun this year, the new permanent home of Splendour In The Grass, with the fuzz targeting crowd behaviour, drink driving, and of course drug possession.

As the Police media release states, sniffer dogs, mounted units, general officers, transport police, and public order and riot squad (necessary?) were all present at the festival site, conducting a total of 353 person searches and 50 vehicle searches over the duration of the event.

Before the festival had even kicked off a major drug bust was conducted on the Thursday, with a 21-year-old man arrested and charged with supply of prohibited drugs after Police searched his van and found 102 tablets of ecstasy and 0.5 grams of MDMA powder. Drug detection dogs used throughout the event resulted in over 500 grams of drugs seized in the first day of the festival alone, with 389 detections in total and 282 people being found in possession of illegal drugs including cannabis and MDMA.

Despite the multitude of drug offences, Tweed/Byron Local Area Commander, Superintendant Stuart Wilkins, said the weekend was an overall success with a generally well behaved crowd.

“We were happy with crowd behaviour and only responded to minor issues of unacceptable behaviour and property theft. Overall it was a great weekend with the crowd enjoying themselves."

Not everyone seemed to enjoy themselves though, with hundreds of punters complaining about poor planning and facilities, which organisers insisted were "nothing out of the ordinary".

What do you think? Has the advent of social media and a new younger generation of festival goers resulted in a rise in complaints which back in the day punters would have copped on the chin and put down to as simply part of the festival experience? Let us know your thoughts.

Darkbeat Releases 10th Anniversary Mix Compilation

Melbourne (and Australian) clubbing institution Darkbeat is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with a triple-mix CD from a selection of Australia's finest DJs; Anthony Pappa, Rollin Connection and Phil K.

One of Australia's finest (and first) DJ exports Anthony Pappa takes the reigns of disc one of 'Darkbeat 10th Anniversary Collection' with a surprisingly modern and funk-inflected house mix which has him sounding a far cry from his progressive tag. Disc two is looked after by Darkbeat founder Daniel Banko AKA Rollin Connection who takes things up a notch, and finally Melbourne star and mid-00s progressive house and breaks purveyor Phil K shows off his new sound with a slow, chugging after-hours mix.

As a club promotion and tour agency, Darkbeat has over the past decade toured and hosted the world’s most leading and sought after acts such as Sasha, Stanton Warriors, Sven Vath, Derrick Carter, Claude VonStoke and John 00 Fleming and many more. In more recent years the brand's association with national festival brands like Stereosonic and Summadayze has seen their profile skyrocket even further.

Having pumped this compilation at Pulse HQ in Sydney the past few weeks we can attest to the fact that 'Darkbeat 10th Anniversary Collection' is one of the mix compilations of the year. And that's not bullsh*t PR speak - that's a fact.

'Darkbeat 10th Anniversary Collection' is out now on Darkbeat Recordings.

Beat scene instigator and electronic hip hop hero Daedelus has announced a new album, Drown Out, due for release on September 17th through Anticon Records.

Daedelus - aside from this Victorian image and post-industrial themes - has been one of the most praised figures to emerge from the hailed LA beat scene. The producer and multii-instrumentalist makes his debut for the revered US hip hop label (after a 12 plus year career that has seen him release just as many albums), and has made the track 'Paradiddle' available to stream in the player above. Sewing up various genres and sonic palettes - from jazz, juke, rave, hip-hop and beyond, the artist continues his approach of sonic clarity by letting his emotions guide the countless genres he blends into one track. Or as he explains in an official statement:

"Music can be this ultimate form of poetry—a place to express huge ideas and a whole range of emotion in a few minutes,” Daedelus, says. “But it can fall short because no one can quite share in the experience as much as you feel yourself. Someone can empathize, but your melancholy ultimately rests in you. Title the songs, name the album, but the music is what speaks in the end."

The full tracklisting is underneath. Drown Out is released on September 17th through Anticon.

Tracklisting:
1. Flat Faded
2. Paradiddle
3. Tiptoes
4. Frisson
5. Perpetually
6. At Attentions
7. Keep Still
8. Abandon
9. Music Concrete

Quick Fire: William Kouam Djoko

$

William Kouam Djoko is a fast rising talent hailing from Amsterdam who’s been gaining plenty of hype recently. An exclusive resident for Carnival Cities at Sankeys Ibiza this year, his sets are a mix of raw, upfront techno, disco, house, pop, and everything in between. And that’s what makes William so enthralling. He’s not afraid to polarize, to be himself, to have fun. And though he might lose a potential fan from time to time, that’s okay. It’s all a part of the process. Fans aside, William understands that the most important factor in any artist’s life is creative flexibility, which he has plenty of. And although he’s a relative newcomer on the international scene, it’s obvious he understands exactly what he’s doing, forging a solid base at home through labels such as Rush Hour, clubs like Trouw and collaborations with good friends such as Tom Trago

We caught up with William on the beach near his hotel in Talamanca to chat about his new found success, how he views music, and what it’s been like to finally come to Ibiza in our latest Quick Fire grilling.

William, welcomeHow are you doing? Pretty good man. Excited to be able to come out here every other week. It’s almost like a dream come true to have a residency here.”

How’s your summer been? Pretty good man. Pretty hectic, but this year it’s finally kicking off. I’ve been working on music for a long time now, about 9 years, so this year is pretty hectic already, a lot of gigs touring, and I’m pretty happy about that.

Are you finding any time to get into the studio? I just moved into a new place at the beginning of this year. Before that I had a house and a separate studio outside of my house, so I’ve been doing music for a bit, but to be honest, I’ve had a couple of months where I’ve had writer's block. I just took on a new remix on for Lessizmore, and I think that’s going to be getting me back into the groove.

Do you think the writer's block comes from being so busy all of the sudden? Yeah, that, and like I said, it’s a new place. You always have to adjust. You have to find your sweet spot. My M.O. is a bit off since I had to move. I’m not worried about it though. It just happens from time to time.

How’s your recent release on Leftroom doing? Pretty good man. The feedback has been huge. I’m really happy with it. Matt took me on board. From the moment we met and said he wanted to put out some tracks of mine, he gave me all the confidence to stay relaxed, and now I’ve got the feedback sheets back, and it’s pretty amazing. When I play the track, people already know it, so of course that’s pretty huge. And I’ve got a remix from Matthew Herbert, who is one of my greatest inspirations house music wise. It’s amazing.

The first time you were on stage was when you were MCing a friend’s party. Is that where you got you flare for live vocals? Yeah I think so. I always was an entertainer, so to say. I just didn’t have a place to vent that side of myself. The guys just gave me a microphone an said ‘well you’re good at speaking English and you don’t have any stage fright, so let’s see what happens.’ And that turned into something pretty cool. I do a lot of live vocals on my tracks, and I do a lot of live shows. I like to mix it up, give them a little extra show. It was something that came naturally.

Who were some of your inspirations coming up in the scene? One of the greatest inspirations to me has always been DJ Koze. How he perceives music, taking the complete piss out of music but being a total geek sound-wise, that really appeals to me. And then guys like Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos, because I came into this music when the minimal hype was coming up. But I don’t know? I recently went to Pitch Festival here in Amsterdam where I got to see James Blake perform live for the first time. I was thoroughly impressed by what I heard and saw on stage – so fragile and powerful and the same time. Very much inspiring to see a show like that with myself also having ambitions in moving into more concert like shows instead of DJ and live sets.”

When you’re on the plane and you pop on your mp3 player, who’s the first person to pop up? Often times I just listen to music on YouTube and put it in my favorites list, and don’t always necessarily remember the artist’s name. That way I listen to a lot of different music. It goes from house to techno to soul to R n’ B to the grimy stuff, then electronic and jazz. Exactly how I do my music.

As I’m sure you know, Dutch house is seen as a bit of a dirty phrase in the underground. Do you see your type of music growing in Holland? Of course it is. I mean, Dutch house, as much as I don’t like listening to it, I still appreciate that it’s out there. When I started listening to electronic music, it was all Top 40 stuff, and I was like, ‘wow, this is it!’ But then you grow older and you start to think, ‘wait a minute, what is this one trick pony really all about?’ And you start to listen to music in a different way, and that’s how you get into the underground. It also encourages underground artists to pop up, making things stronger.

And in Amsterdam, are there more underground artists popping up? Yeah definitely. Amsterdam is one big artist community. We have tons of friends who are DJs and producers who are becoming very successful at the moment, which is amazing to be apart of and to see that grow. In Amsterdam, the scene, as I like to say, is overly healthy. So there are so many clubs, which are filled constantly, and they’re really up for it, know their music, and support their local underground artists. So I think it’s really good.

Last year was your first time playing in Ibiza? Yeah. I had a few gigs at a club called Plastik, but I consider this to me my first real time playing in Ibiza. That was just dipping my toes into the water.

Had you visited Ibiza before? Nope. That was my first time coming. This year I’m really learning about the island – where the good food spots are, the clubs, how everything works a little bit.

Are you enjoying it? I am!

Does it live up to the hype? Totally. It’s got the busy parts, but if you want to go and chill out, you’ve got places to do that, so it’s like a small paradise.

How does playing out here compare to playing other gigs around the world, or back at home? The thing with Ibiza, it’s a party island. So when people go out to the club, their mindset is ‘we’re only here for a wee,k so we’ve got to make the most out of it.’ People are really giving their all, which motivates me to give my all, which I love doing in the first place. The energy with Sankeys has been amazing. Really good.

How did the residency with Carnival pop up? It sort of just happened. Jorn (his manager) got contacted by BONES. Initially was just to play one time, and it turned into a residency. It’s been really nice. Like I said, the energy has been really good, and the team there make me feel really at home. I’m really, really grateful. Sankeys is doing one hell of a job this season.

Have you had a chance to sample some Hierbas yet? It’s my new favorite pastime! We should get some after this interview.

Do you have any big projects coming up? I thought you’d never ask! I’ve got a big project coming up which is really exciting for me. In Holland I’ve been booked for the Lowlands Festival, which I consider to be the spot to be booked at in Holland. I’m really, really thankful that we could get together. The last two years I’ve been there just as a visitor, and it’s really been influencing me in how I DJ and how I work. Last year I got influenced by DJ Spinn and Rashad, which is like 160 BPM. When I got home, my ego died a certain death. All the partying and no sleep. But after a few days I got into the studio, and within two hours made this track at 174 BPM. It’s going to come out in October on Voyage Direct, a Rush Hour sub-label, and I’m going to get a video with it. I saw the first footage of it.

It’s going to be different. I don’t even know what genre the track is going to be. I’m calling it Africa tech. I don’t know what the reactions are going to be. But we’re doing a whole package with it. There’s going to be a tailor-made outfit made by a really cool designer in Amsterdam, a photo shoot, an animated music video… Because it’s 174 BPM, there’s a chance a lot of DJs will just look past it. But with the video and everything, we’re bringing a whole package – a concept, really.

Is that something you can play on stage? When I play a live show I do. I take the mic, take the tempo down to 80 or 90 BPM, and people are like ‘what’s going on?’ Then I start on the track at double tempo, and that can obviously lead to very surprising reactions. Some people get it, some people don’t. I played it in Moscow last week and some people went completely berserk, and some people were just looking at me like ‘what is that African guy doing on stage?’ But I don’t mind that. Don’t take things too seriously. I mean, I take music seriously, but only to a certain extent. There has to be room for fun, and that’s the feeling I try to convey every time I play.

Constant reinvention is something William strives for, and it shows. One of the most refreshing new talents, it’s clear that he’s cutting his own path, all the more important in a time when the market is more overcrowded than ever. In staying true to himself, William reminds us all that we shouldn’t forget what it’s all about – having fun.

Are you scared of the alarm going off in the morning? Does the idea of hitting the gym before a full day's work make you quake in fear? Then why not try a spot of Morning Raving, as pioneered by London producers Sam Moyo and Nico Thoemmes and their new 'club morning', Morning Glory.

Yes that's correct - a spot of raving before work. The pair have started the new initiave in Shoreditch, East London (where else?) after trialing the idea at festivals. Outhere, back in the real world, they've got the intention to roll out the initiative across the UK as the activity grows in momentum. Dancers - or ravers in this circumstance - have swapped drugs and alcohol with massages, coffees and smoothies.
