Melt! Festival 2013 In Review

0
0

25,000 of the world’s most well informed music lovers made their pilgrimage to Melt! festival’s surreal location outside of Berlin at the Ferropolis, Germany’s “City of Iron.” Year round the open air location is set around a surreal peninsula landscape decked with massive industrial machines abandoned a long time ago and surrounded by a beautiful lake which served it’s purpose all to well during the weekend’s perpetual heat. This weekend however, no signs of former abandonment were to be seen, as Melt! celebrated it’s 16 anniversary. The weekend was packed with the world’s leading underground house and techno acts as well as an equally impressive display of the most innovative indie and rock bands out there today.

Friday night’s party started off before even entering the festival grounds. Melt! offers its campers 2 different stages in the camp site with local talents which spin every afternoon and night, getting attendees in the groove before they even make the walk along the lake to the festival site. Once physically and mentally prepared, we made our way to the Big Wheel by Resident Advisor stage just in time for “It’s Time for the Perculator” being spun by Joy Orbison. After a beautiful set transition into Scuba, we had the pleasure of catching an extraordinarily emotional performance on the main stage by James Black who managed to hold his audience captive with every cord he sung. We then (obviously) caught the Belfast duo Bicep spin their sexy house grunge back on the Big Wheel stage. The absolute highlight of the night was Benjamin Damage’s incredible fist pumping set on the Melt! Selektor Stage, surrounded by the beach and water. Imagine moving your body to Benjamin Damage’s oh so sweet techno with your legs in the water, that moment was epic to say the least. We closed off the insane night with 4 hours of the world’s best techno, brought to us by the Berghain raised and Berlin natives Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock. Both men, feeling right at home spinning at Melt! festival, brought their best records and an epic vibe with them to the Big Wheel stage.....it was almost as if Klock queued in the euphoric sunrise which marked the beginning of his epic set.

Day 2 started off with the one of the best sets I have ever had the pleasure of dancing too. After dragging ourselves away from the tent and to the infamous Sleepless Floor (which lies right outside the actual festival) we were taken in by the incredibly innovative soulful house sounds of Motor City Drum Ensemble. His set going from 3-5pm, the vibe on the Sleepless Floor beach and the immense connection between him and the audience was unbeatable. MCDE spun all his classic tracks with the most sincere passion and love for his music and the incredible crowd in front of him.

Eats Everything rocking the Big Wheel stage. We then caught a legendary performance by The Howling, Innervision’s Ry X and Frank Wiedemann’s new project. Their set was everything I had expected it to be and more, if you ever have the chance of treating your ears to a perfectly curated sound, don’t deny them of The Howling. We then ventures back to the Big Wheel stage for the marathon of sets that included DJ Koze, James Holden, Schwarzmann (live) and Solomun. DJ Koze dropping his infamous remix of Matthew Herbert’s “It’s Only” was legendary and had the massive crowd rippling with love throughout the whole 3 hours. Diynamic label boss Solomun closed off the night (morning) with a cool sensual set filled with deep and funky house classics. His set definitely marked a hilight of the festival, the rowdy crowd was going wild in the morning sun for beginning to end.

On the third day of Melt! the sun always feels a little hotter, the music a little louder and the people a little sexier. We couldn’t deny ourselves of the deep house duo Catz N Dogz spinning down a funky set at the Sleepless Floor from 12-2pm. The Polish duo brought the heat and threw down records just as hot as the sun was. Still vibing off their disco sounds, the party continued at the Big Wheel stage with Damian Lazarus and a bass filled set by none other than Maceo Plex who brought a solid collection of pumping records to his Melt! festival debut. Without any hesitation, the masses grooved on over to see Atoms for Peace close out the Main Stage with an extraordinary set appealing to both electronic music enthusiasts and live band lovers. Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke in tandem with Red Hot Chili Pepper’s bass guitarist Flea and long time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich took the crowd on an unforgettable journey through the creative minds of some of the best musicians out there today. Their 2 hours performance was packed with groovy renditions of York’s solo material and a plethora of tracks from the band’s recent debut, AMOK. The performance was legendary to say the least.

To close off the night keeping true to tradition, Ellen Allien, the Queen of label BPitch Control, ended her label showcase and the festival on the Sleepless Floor. One of the best vibes of the whole festival, all Melt! lovers come together on the final morning to dance together and let Allien take control of their bodies, minds and souls as the sun rises one last time. Having been one of the initial artists to draw up the festival lineup in 1997, Allien feels perfectly at home on the Sleepless Floor and this time was no exception, taking the all too willing crowd on a journey through the layers of techno and acid house.

Between it’s monumental backdrop, multinational crowd and incredibly impressive lineup every year, it’s no wonder why Melt! festival is every so often crowned the best festival in Europe over the course of the summer. Despite the blistering heat this year, the festival remained exceptionally well organized and it’s crowd radiated a positive vibe though a mix of lake side chilling and early morning raving. This year proved to me and my Crew that there is absolutely no doubt we will be returning to Melt! paradise again next year.

To get an insight on exactly how extraordinary the weekend was, check out the 2013 recap video below, and look out for Melt! 2014 tickets on sale very soon, taking place between July 18th and 20th. http://www.putpat.tv/e/ZDgzMiMyMDE4

Carl Cox's Revolution DJ Competition Winners: Waltek

0
0

Once again, Carl Cox and team held a DJ competition, selecting 3 talented winners out of what were surely hundreds, if not thousands of applicants. One of those with enough skills to best the rest was Italian DJ and producer Waltek, who played El Salon for the Pulse Radio takeover at Carl Cox’s The Revolution Unties at Space Ibiza on July 23rd. Waltek’s submission, which can be found on Mixcloud (who hosted the competition) here, starts off with a groovy, hypnotic tech house original by Waltek, featuring an incredibly unique female vocal sample, urging Cox to put the phone down, stop checking his email, and listen, promising he’ll be hypnotized by the mix to come. It’s a brilliant way to cut through the noise and get noticed, if not a little cheeky. But hey, it worked!

But this wasn’t Waltek’s first trip to the studio. Back in the mid 2000s, Waltek began sending out letters to dozens of music production academies in the hopes of being accepted, and was finally chosen along with just 8 other students (out of 500 who didn’t make the cut) to the Music Lab Studio of Turin. Since then, he’s released on labels like Aenaria and SFR Recordings, churning out soulful, Afro tribal influenced deep and tech house, a departure from his decidedly tech driven winning set.

Though listening to Waltek mix, it’s clear he’s comfortable with just about any record, as long as it fits the situation. At times he’s clearly in Afro-jazz-soul territory, others, straight into the groove and on the dance floor, just like his set for The Revolution, which you can read about in greater detail here.

First off, congrats on being one of the winners of the competition! Listening to your winning set, the first track, “Carl Jump,” stood out so much. It’s incredible! Where did you find Nisey? And how did the idea to make such an attention-grabbing track come about? I have a secret! Annarita, she is a dear friend, and, as concept designer, is also my partner for the creative projects. For this set I wanted something stunning that sounds different from the others, and so we had the idea of an a cappella that can 'talk to Carl.' Nisey is an American actress who was in Rome with Annarita for some months. Nisey was a great interpreter and vocals for this a cappella. From that we started to record a cappellas for some tracks as the next release “Get Lost” [will be out] soon on T's Crates records.

What is your DJ career like in Italy after winning the competition? Has it improved? I hope that my career asa  DJ will be improved, we will see. But for sure, to win Carl's competition improved me personally as DJ.

Has Carl been an influence of yours? Carl is a godfather his genre. He enlightens.

What was it like to win the competition? It was amazing! I think that to play at Space for Carl's Revolution is a dream for a DJ. The most important thing is to get Carl's appreciation. It makes me feel very proud.

Pascal & Pearce: Desperado ft. LCNVL (Official music video)

We brought you the teaser and promised to bring you the final product as soon as it’s ready. So here it is, record label Just Music’s Pascal & Pearce have just released the official music video for ‘Desperado’ featuring LCNVL (Locnville). The track also pulled some attention from 5FM and their listeners as it was the highest new entry on the 5FM Top 40 this weekend.

Pascal & Pearce have also just broke news that they have been nominated for ‘Best African Act in the 2013 MTV EMA's, naturally, the lads are happy about that, so the energy around the duo at the moment is definitely turning heads – the release of this equally energetic track and music video will only add to that.

If you’re wondering, its private jets, limo’s, champagne and scenes from the party they headlined at Taboo not too long ago and from what I can tell, they’re getting a rather decent response.

This is the first single from Pascal & Pearce's forthcoming studio album 'One Night Only' which is due for release in September 2013. The Desperado single is available right now on iTunes.

Listen to A New EP from Julio Bashmore & Kowton

After the furor surrounding 'Duccy', Julio Bashmore is joining forces for a brand new EP due for release soon with trusted collaborator Kowton.

Bristol house lynchpin Julio Bashmore recently found himself the subject of divided opinion after releasing stripped back roller Duccy to varying opinions. It seems the Au Seve creator is unrepentant (read: not bothered) as the latest EP - a collaboration with friend Kowton - juxtaposes dusty low end aesthetics and pop driven hooks - both traits that each producer is individually known for. Check the track out in the player above and judge for yourself - what do you think of Julio's latest cut?

It’s Monday morning, you still hear that faint bassline and snare you fell in love with over the weekend ringing in your ears, feeling as if you’ve just run the comrades from dancing all weekend. Mondays - we bring you Fresh Monday Mixtapes - this time round we caught up with Dix.

Cape Town based DJ and Producer, Dix is also the other half of Cape Town duo dubbed Diggin4Dodge. The very unique talents of both himself and Clinton Dodgen, we thought we’d get something from both artist’s, today we got something special from Dix for the Pulse Fresh Monday Mixtape series.

‘In Pursuit of the Sublime’ is not your typical Dix set, he has definitely explored more of an experimental avenue with this one. The way Dix encapsulates several styles and genres this truly is a gem from him to show the other-side of his musical persona. So for 67 minutes, turn it up and let him take you on this moody journey that will no doubt captivate you.

Paris Hilton on Foam & Diamonds: "It’s going to be the most fun night of the week"

Global socialite and girlfriend of a DJ, Paris Hilton, is heading closer to her much talked about residency at Ibiza's Amnesia club, revealing more to the club about her forthcoming Foam & Diamonds night.

Shedding light on her publicized residency, it appears (as expected) to focus sharply on the glitz and glamourous side of clubbing. Besides an abundance of, er, foam and diamonds, the heir to the Hilton empire eloquently told the club's website "just look at the billboards and think of what Amnesia and Foam Party is all about. It’s going to be the most fun night of the week".

Asked about the music she'll be 'playing', she tellingly reveals "Surprise! You will hear it when I play at Foam & Diamonds. I’m very excited with this wonderful project so I prefer to keep the magic up and do not reveal too much until the big day. Foam & Diamonds will start soon so I think we can all wait for a big surprise!

Thanks for the insight, Paris. Read the full 'interview' here.

First International guest announced for Earthdance Cape Town: Symbolic

It’s crazy to think that Nekkies is a thing of the past but I think Piketberg will bring bigger, better and brighter things in the near future. It seems they are on the right track with Earthdance Cape Town having just announced that psychedelic groove masters Symbolic are on their way for this year’s event.

Israel’s Symbolic, signed to Nano Records will be focusing on the dancefloor with their psychedelic progressive trance, laced with fat basslines clawed together by the mechanic rhythms and crunchy grooves of the duo, Ilan Shemi & Oshry Ben Simon.

The trance community will be stomping in full force at this year’s event with a sense of refreshed energy with the changes that have been made. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Community’, coupled with the new venue and the fact that Symbolic is the first international they announced to play – we’re in for a good ride. Stay tuned for further releases.

Game, Set, Match with DJ Tennis

0
0

There is no disputing that Manfredi Romano, better known as DJ Tennis, is making waves in the electronic music scene not just with his sets but with his flourishing Life and Death label as well. Fresh off the island of Ibiza after playing Loco Dice's Used + Abused party at Ushuaia, DJ Tennis sits down with us to talk about scoring movies, being a talent booker, and his approach for his interesting podcast for Pulse Radio that takes us off the beaten "tracks" and gives a better understanding of the school of thought behind the Life and Death label.

Your label, Life and Death, is relatively young having only been formed in 2010 but yet it’s doing quite well.  How did you first your partner in the endeavor Greg Oreck of Thugfucker? What was the conversation that led you to create it? Life and Death is me, Greg Oreck (Thugfucker) and Matteo Milleri (Tale of Us) with the precious collaboration of Job Jobse (Trouw resident).... Actually I don't remember exactly what was the conversation, Greg talks so much.

Your bio states that in many ways it’s a reaction to the “generic output” that was prevalent in 2010.  Three years on, what do you think of the current crop of music being produced? There is a new generation of very talented producers and performers and I think that people are finally getting used to listen to a wider range of styles and sounds.

Over a year ago in an interview with Ibiza Voice you mentioned that Life and Death was still in the "life" stage, when will it "death" and what would that encompass? Still alive....

Prior to diving headlong into the world of electronic music, you were working as a music booker in Italy for several different genres of musical artists. What did your experience in this realm of the industry teach you that has helped you flourish in your role of DJ/Producer? Of course, observing, managing, and touring many different kinds of artists is an amazing training: especially meeting different kind of audiences...that point of view helped me a lot to develop the label and my musical productions.

It's also listed in your bio that in the 90's you were making music for theatre, movie soundtracks, and commercials.  It's impressive you did that first before becoming a full time DJ and producer.  For most people, they're trying to do it the other way around. Do you ever see yourself scoring movies or becoming involved in such productions again? I still want to do that and at the first occasion, I am ready to restart. To be honest, I never even imagined that DJing could ever be my job.

Which three musical artists would you say have had the greatest impact on you? There are too many to list only three. But for sure, rock music had a great influence and the first albums of Pink Floyd and Fugazi are the most played in my iPod.

Briefly, tell us the story behind the making of this podcast - what inspired you? Why did you choose some of the selections on it? The podcast is not a strictly dance floor mix. For Pulse, I wanted to go through my huge passion for indie music and range as much as possible. It's not easy though. Indie rock, ambient, IDM music was and still is my main inspiration for my productions and for the Life and Death musical research. I think those who know the label already noticed that.

Video: Flo Rida (Illegally?) Samples Infinity Ink's "Infinity"

On Friday, we posted Infinity Ink's lovely new music video for their track "Aya." Yesterday, on Sunday, July 28th, rapper Flo Rida posted his music video for his track "Can't Believe It," sampling Infinity Ink's hit on Crosstown Rebels, "Infinity." Unfortunately, the content of Flo Rida's song and video do not do the incredible tune any justice. The video has garnered negative comments from both Flo Rida and Infinity Ink fans alike, the general trend being on the horrible quality of the production. Flo Rida's Facebook fan page has seen similar reactions.

According to the entry on whosampled.com, Flo Rida samples "Infinity" at eight seconds in and uses it throughout his entire track. This incident occurs after a slew of other such infringements from rappers and singers, such as Leona Lewis using Avicii's "Penguin" and Will.i.am sampling Mat Zo and Arty's track "Rebound" without their permission. There has been no comment from Infinity Ink on any of their social media channels on the matter whether this was done legally or not, thus far. Stay tuned to Pulse Radio for further developments. In the meantime, here is the original hit that has over 8 million views.

Stream Moderat's Entire New Album 'II'

The unusual pairing of Modeselektor and Apparat has brought to fruition a lot of amazing music, and on Tuesday, August 6th, the trio will be releasing their sophomore album named 'II,' available for purchase on Amazon, iTunes, and Monkeytown Records. We've already had a taste of their single "Bad Kingdom," which has received positive marks across the board, and now NPR indulges our impatience with a full stream of the entire album.

From the vocal to the instrumental, from fast paced to more ambient explorations, the album presents the wide range of ideas the three of them so meticulously developed in their Berlin studio near Alexanderplatz. While working with three great minds at once can be challenging, Moderat proves once more that the result is well worth it.

Somewhere in BKN: Verboten's StageOne Night of Sheer Powerhouse Talent

0

Clear blue skies and crisp views of the Manhattan skyline, accompanied by occasional cool breezes made up the perfect setting for Saturday's Verboten StageOne event with Luciano, Carl Craig, Agoria, and Moodymann on the Williamsburg Waterfront. By four o'clock, the crowd was beginning to thicken with excited party goers, delighted by the afternoon sun and jazzy and soulful cuts Moodymann was delivering. People were strolling about the warehouse grounds, enjoying cool drinks under the tent or even playing ping pong around the side of the building. Few could resist turning around to take a few snaps of the impressive view that the DJs were playing to.

Agoria manned the decks after Moodymann created a quicker paced segue towards the end of his set. The crowd at that point, had already filled the entire open space, making it quite a spectacular site to behold from the stage. The skies were occasionally dotted by a few beach balls that were being thrown up high by dancing people below. Not afraid to mix dance with emotion, Agoria's set was intensified by breakdown moments where beautiful melodic tracks would take hold of the crowd and provide a respite from the beat while still channeling "hands in the air" feeling. He concluded his set with a favorite of mine, Rone's "Parade," which for me by itself already made it a magical evening.

Carl Craig arrived looking relaxed in a pair of sweatpants and T-shirt, taking to the stage for the sunset slot. Although there was no after party, the good news was the event was extended until midnight, allowing Carl Craig and Luciano to embark on an epic five hour back to back set.  Each of them took control of separate sides of the stage, but still worked together to close the night off.

As the New York City electronic music scene flourishes, StageONE concept adds a nice diversity to our summer musical programming with a bit different train of thought. It takes the bits and pieces we enjoy about festival experiences (such as the open air environment, day time partying, and the ability to see more of your friends) and combined it with one night and one stage of excellent bookings. Now that is how you throw a summer party.

Watch: Atoms For Peace Live In London

The Thom Yorke led supergroup Atoms for Peace performed a string of highly anticipated shows at London's Roundhouse last week.

In the aftermath of Yorke and Nigel Godrich pulling their own respective music from Spotify, Atoms For Peace successfully re-streamed two of those shows to fans willing to pay a premium through a new Australian service called Soundhalo, which allows users to download songs played at a concert and watch them in mp4 video format. Each song costs about $1.60 each, and an entire concert $16.00. Soundhalo was created by former Hunters And Collectors guitarist Baz Palmer and digital media entrepreneur Liza Boston.

You can check out an example in the video below - a performance of Thom Yorke's 'Harrowdown Hill' by Atoms For Peace at one of the aforementioned Roundhouse gigs.

Bad Ecstasy Batch Causes User To Behave Like A Chicken

0
0

It's no real secret that people like to do weird sh*t when they're on drugs, but the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Adelaide Police are linking a particular batch of pills to "bizarre incidents" such as a punter licking a club dance floor and and another acting like a chicken in the back of a taxi.

Though apparently the "bizarre" (and let's face it, pretty funny) behaviour doesn't stop there. Police said another person is believed to have stripped naked and gone for a swim in the River Torrens (oh how weird!), while a number of others took their clothes off and rubbed their bodies on the road surface, apparently to relieve severe itching (OK that is pretty weird). The ecstasy use has also been linked to an increase in the number of fights in the city and reports of people suffering hallucinations.

Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti said it was yet to be established if the ecstasy Police seized from a 21-year-old man from North Adelaide was directly related to the unusual incidents.
