They say one of the keys to gaining success in the electronic music scene is to maintain an eclectic nature and to keep an open mind, through musical freedom and a desire to create and challenge yourself. London based DJ, producer and dance music obsessive Ben Gomori knows all about the successes that can come from hard work, an open attitude & an experimental aesthetic. Releases on Nurvous, Purp & Soul and Baker Street to name a few - plus a stack of quality re-edits and remixes - have maintained Ben's stature as a rising force - all this on top of running his acclaimed Turned On podcast and regularly offering critique and comment in numerous articles for the likes of Mixmag, Resident Advisor and more. Here, Ben steps forward as our latest Fresh Blood focus, creating a bespoke mix for us as he reveals more about his career and trajectory so far. Over to you, Ben.

Thanks for joining us - how did you first find yourself DJing and producing? What is your musical background? I first got into dance music when I was 9 or 10 - lapping up Tape 2 Side 1 of the NOW compilations and the Dance Zone ones. Then my brother started playing us hardcore and jungle tapes in the car when he picked us up from school when I was about 11, and by 12 I had subscribed to MUZIK Magazine and started listening to Pete Tong’s Essential Selection. That formed the bedrock of my dance music education. My brother first got some turntables when I was 14, then I got my own for my 15th birthday and that set me on my way.
I started dabbling with production with other people when I was in my early twenties, and in 2010 I finally got my shit together and did a Logic Pro course at London’s excellent Point Blank Music College. Never looked back.
Your style is quite eclectic, and your regularly explore the worlds of disco, house and more. Are you restless in your production style? Could you define your productions if asked? Very much so! It does my head in a bit to be honest but it’s just how I’m built. I talked to jozif about this recently and he put it
perfectly: “I am physically incapable of making two tracks in a row that sound the same.” I’ve got very eclectic tastes but I don’t know, I just sort of feel a bit wrong trying to replicate a formula or sticking to one style. I envy people who can do that and do it well as it makes life a lot easier. I also get bored easily. Maybe it’s just that I haven’t totally found my sound yet, I’m not sure. Only time will tell. For now I’m very happy producing a range of styles. At the end of the day, it’s not like I’m producing trance one moment and trap the next...
As for defining my style - it’s always got groove and melody. And I would hope that whatever criticisms people could make about my stuff, ‘boring’ is not one of them. I like melodic basslines, skippy/garagey beats, dreamy melodies, pianos....
You're also quite a fan of a cheeky re-edit and remix... what is it that like you about re-edits and bootlegs and the art of making a song your own? I think anyone who has come to production from DJing has a bit of a magpie-like attitude to production. I love hearing something in a track that I think could be extrapolated to great effect, or the possibility of turning people onto stuff they might not normally listening to. Most of all I just love being able to play my favourite tracks in my sets - whatever genre or tempo the original may be. I love the challenge of creating a re-edit without having the track’s constituent parts too.
In terms of remixes, I approach them more like a traditional ‘producer’ I guess. I’m a bit less concerned about making them sound like ‘my style’ (although as explained already, I don’t even know what that is!). I just try to create a remix which feels right for the track and the parts I’ve been given. I think crow-barring it into a certain style can come across very laboured and ham-fisted, in many cases. Each to their own!
What are the best and worst things about the dance music scene in your opinion? Best - it’s about having fun... or it’s certainly supposed to be! I also love the fact that it leads the way in terms of adopting new technology and business models and so on.
Worst - lots of egos, some right dodgy fuckers working in the industry and too much snobbery and bitching.
What's been your biggest booking/DJ date so far? What's been the most memorable for you? Playing We Love... Space was definitely up there. Playing Creamfields too and a couple of years at Secret Garden Party is probably up there too.
What's the flavour of the mix you've made especially for us? Is there any angle/theme running throughout it? Summer vibes. Fair bit of ‘80s electro/boogie influence I guess. Melodic. Uplifting, I would hope. There’s a new remix I’ve just finished for Sleazy Deep on there - apologies it hasn't been mastered yet though, it hasn't quite got the punch of the other tracks!
A few months back you wrote a piece for Mixmag on the worrying trend of ghostwriting music... how did you come to be involved in this, and what prompted you to investigate further? I heard about it from a few people, and after a conversation in Panoramabar at 9 AM one morning with the owner of a well known Berlin label, I decided to investigate further and write an exposé about it. It just sickens me, it’s absolutely pathetic. Bunch of charlatans lording it up in this scene like pornstars with fake cocks haha. Check out the article if you want to know more.
