Fresh Blood: Ben Gomori

$

They say one of the keys to gaining success in the electronic music scene is to maintain an eclectic nature and to keep an open mind, through musical freedom and a desire to create and challenge yourself. London based DJ, producer and dance music obsessive Ben Gomori knows all about the successes that can come from hard work, an open attitude & an experimental aesthetic. Releases on Nurvous, Purp & Soul and Baker Street to name a few - plus a stack of quality re-edits and remixes - have maintained Ben's stature as a rising force - all this on top of running his acclaimed Turned On podcast and regularly offering critique and comment in numerous articles for the likes of Mixmag, Resident Advisor and more. Here, Ben steps forward as our latest Fresh Blood focus, creating a bespoke mix for us as he reveals more about his career and trajectory so far. Over to you, Ben.

[Read on for tracklisting]

Thanks for joining us - how did you first find yourself DJing and producing? What is your musical background? I first got into dance music when I was 9 or 10 - lapping up Tape 2 Side 1 of the NOW compilations and the Dance Zone ones. Then my brother started playing us hardcore and jungle tapes in the car when he picked us up from school when I was about 11, and by 12 I had subscribed to MUZIK Magazine and started listening to Pete Tong’s Essential Selection. That formed the bedrock of my dance music education. My brother first got some turntables when I was 14, then I got my own for my 15th birthday and that set me on my way.

I started dabbling with production with other people when I was in my early twenties, and in 2010 I finally got my shit together and did a Logic Pro course at London’s excellent Point Blank Music College. Never looked back.

Your style is quite eclectic, and your regularly explore the worlds of disco, house and more. Are you restless in your production style? Could you define your productions if asked? Very much so! It does my head in a bit to be honest but it’s just how I’m built. I talked to jozif about this recently and he put it

perfectly: “I am physically incapable of making two tracks in a row that sound the same.” I’ve got very eclectic tastes but I don’t know, I just sort of feel a bit wrong trying to replicate a formula or sticking to one style. I envy people who can do that and do it well as it makes life a lot easier. I also get bored easily. Maybe it’s just that I haven’t totally found my sound yet, I’m not sure. Only time will tell. For now I’m very happy producing a range of styles. At the end of the day, it’s not like I’m producing trance one moment and trap the next...

As for defining my style - it’s always got groove and melody. And I would hope that whatever criticisms people could make about my stuff, ‘boring’ is not one of them. I like melodic basslines, skippy/garagey beats, dreamy melodies, pianos....

You're also quite a fan of a cheeky re-edit and remix... what is it that like you about re-edits and bootlegs and the art of making a song your own? I think anyone who has come to production from DJing has a bit of a magpie-like attitude to production. I love hearing something in a track that I think could be extrapolated to great effect, or the possibility of turning people onto stuff they might not normally listening to. Most of all I just love being able to play my favourite tracks in my sets - whatever genre or tempo the original may be. I love the challenge of creating a re-edit without having the track’s constituent parts too.

In terms of remixes, I approach them more like a traditional ‘producer’ I guess. I’m a bit less concerned about making them sound like ‘my style’ (although as explained already, I don’t even know what that is!). I just try to create a remix which feels right for the track and the parts I’ve been given. I think crow-barring it into a certain style can come across very laboured and ham-fisted, in many cases. Each to their own!

What are the best and worst things about the dance music scene in your opinion? Best - it’s about having fun... or it’s certainly supposed to be! I also love the fact that it leads the way in terms of adopting new technology and business models and so on.

Worst - lots of egos, some right dodgy fuckers working in the industry and too much snobbery and bitching.

What's been your biggest booking/DJ date so far? What's been the most memorable for you? Playing We Love... Space was definitely up there. Playing Creamfields too and a couple of years at Secret Garden Party is probably up there too.

What's the flavour of the mix you've made especially for us? Is there any angle/theme running throughout it? Summer vibes. Fair bit of ‘80s electro/boogie influence I guess. Melodic. Uplifting, I would hope. There’s a new remix I’ve just finished for Sleazy Deep on there - apologies it hasn't been mastered yet though, it hasn't quite got the punch of the other tracks!

A few months back you wrote a piece for Mixmag on the worrying trend of ghostwriting music... how did you come to be involved in this, and what prompted you to investigate further? I heard about it from a few people, and after a conversation in Panoramabar at 9 AM one morning with the owner of a well known Berlin label, I decided to investigate further and write an exposé about it. It just sickens me, it’s absolutely pathetic. Bunch of charlatans lording it up in this scene like pornstars with fake cocks haha. Check out the article if you want to know more.

Finally, tell us about your current release schedule and any other forthcoming bits that you can share with us... Yes yes - here’s what’s coming up on the release / gig front:

Carl Cox & Marco Carola Play The Revolution at Space Ibiza: In Review

$

This year has marked a change in the way we have seen bookings being handled at the clubs of Ibiza. With so much competition, each night seems to have upped the ante, inviting powerhouse DJs who would have otherwise stuck to their respective clubs and residencies. Such was the case on Tuesday, when Music On’s curator Marco Carola dropped by Carl Cox’s legendary Revolution party. And when two of the island’s biggest nights combine forces, coupled with Marco’s debut appearance at Space, it was sure to be a night of mass proportions. Add to the mix some of todays leading purveyors of techno and house, including Carl Lio, Nicole Moudaber, Cassy and Just Be (Bushwacka!), you’re left with nothing but shear size and musical mayhem - for some, it's exactly what you would hope for in a night out in Ibiza. The scene was set for a party that would leave the Island talking for weeks to come.

We arrived shortly after 1am, and made our way into the main room where Carola had already taken the stage. There was already barely enough room to move, but that had little impact on the vibe, with smiles a plenty and people dancing from front to back. With every build, every drop, every eerie sound, I was absolutely taken aback by Marco’s ability to surprise me again and again – never a dull moment. The ambiance was magnified by the amazing detail to sound and lighting on this particular night. The sound booth had seen a move from near the DJ booth to smack in the center of the dance floor. I can’t say why this change occurred, but I can say that there was a noticeable change in the lighting that accompanied Marco Carola’s set. Bright and three-dimensional LEDs filled the room, demanding your attention, getting audible responses from the crowd at some points.

Carl Lio took the reigns of the terrace and it was a party no doubt - even more so up near the DJ booth where Carlo and friends were passing around drinks, dancing, and possibly having more fun than the crowd its self. Some DJs come in, do their job, and move on. But everyone that night seemed to be overjoyed to be invited to play on such a special occasion. Seeing your favorite DJs truly enjoy what they do always adds a sense of elation to the evening, as you know it’s going to reflect in the set they’re pushing out to the crowd. Carl Lio had an upbeat but hard-hitting techno set from start to finish, and the crowd did not waiver one bit. Every punter was firmly planted in place, and not going anywhere for the long haul.

As Lio finished up his set, Nicole Moudaber was just getting ready to blast us off with yet a few more hours of unrelenting techno. Nicole took stage at just about 2:30 in the morning, and even with Marco playing in the main room and Carl Cox coming up so quickly, you would’ve had no clue looking at the bodies packed on the terrace floor. I said it about Lio and ill say it about Moudaber. They were having such a good time playing that it actually made me smile. Seeing a DJ enjoy themselves that much is truly a pleasure, and really, that’s what its all about – playing good music with good friends and enjoying yourself, all while rocking the crowd from start to finish.

From there, we stepped away from the terrace for a bit to catch the opening of Carl Cox in the main room. There’s no two ways about it – when King Cox comes on in the main room, there will be no escaping his intro. New for this year’s revolution nights, Cox opens up with a massive laser show and voice over introducing you to revolution nights, letting you know your not anywhere else, and that you most definitely shouldn’t be either. In true Cox fashion, his sets have something for everyone, from upbeat tech house to dark, hard techno. Couple that with extremely well thought out and engineered lighting structures, Funktion Ones that surely could knock the wind out of you at close range, Kryoman descending from the ceiling, and Co2 guns blasting you with a massive breath of fresh air, its pure sensory overload and from start to finish. Ibiza baby.

King Cox kept the main room pumping, but we stepped away for a minute to catch up in the Salon where Pulse Radio was hosting the winners of the Carl Cox’s recent DJ competition with Italy’s Waltek on the decks this week. As we popped into the lounge and smoking area with deep, funky tunes kept people dancing and grooving along to the warm vibes, and as more people walked into the Salon you could see them immediately getting into the vibe. It was the absolute perfect sound for chilling out and having a few more drinks before heading back into the madness that is Space on a Tuesday night.

Just Be (Bushwacka!) was coming on in the terrace, so we quickly hopped across the hallway back onto the terrace dance floor to catch the ending of Nicole’s set and the beginning of what I considered to be the best set of the night. Just Be (or Bushwacka! as you may know him) came out of the gates so hard it gave me the chills. In fact, it was the first set of the night where I actually felt obligated to make my way dead center onto the dance floor so I could soak in his set in its entirety. The amount of energy he was pushing out was unreal, and everyone on the floor was commenting on it. Just Be was playing with CDs, but the layering and complexity of his builds and drops would have likely had most guessing Traktor or Ableton. Smashing in samples like ‘Rob Base - It Takes 2’ into his set, it was clear he was in control and that no one would be leaving until he let them do so.

As the sun started to rise there was a nice surprise waiting for all those that may have arrived late or thought that just wasn’t enough time given to Mr. Carola. Just after 6am, Carola was brought back on to go back to back with Cox until 9am. Needless to say if anyone was thinking about leaving early, plans changed very quickly. The two put on a spectacle only the likes of Ibiza could host, keeping every man, woman and VIP dancing like nobody was watching until dawn, rounding out an already stellar evening. Even having just turned 51, its still very clear Cox has more than a few tricks up his sleeve for us this season, and we haven’t even seen him on Amnesia terrace for Music On yet.

Pulse ventured into the heart of East London on Sunday to get involved at Lovebox Festival and were treated to a fun, off-the-cuff interview with house duo and Hot Creations signings PBR Streetgang - from  inside a fancy dress taxi.

Amongst the fun and frivolity that consumed Victoria Park (also seeing Frankie Knuckles, DJ Harvey and Heidi tearing up the 3 day festival), Pulse got wonky backstage with PBR Streetgang (in a colourful, fancy dress taxi) to chat LOvebox, Festivals, the future of the London scene and release plans. As you can see from the image below, PBR gladly got into the spirit, donning some fancy dress in the process. For once, we just couldn't ignore the elephant in the room (taxi)...

After it was announced that Four Tet would be releasing a brand new album, news has just come in that the UK production icon shall be previewing tracks from the new LP tonight on BBC Radio One and Rinse FM.

Four Tet - AKA Kieran Hebden - has amassed a huge following through his ever-impressive body of work that flits from techno to garage and ambient experimental electronica. The new album - titled Beautiful Rewind - comes a couple of months after he released free album 0181, a collection of his own productions between 1997 - 2001. He's also remixed Thom Yorke's Atoms for Peace project and produced the new album for Omar Souleyman. A busy man to say the least.

Keiran took to Twitter to reveal that tracks from the forthcoming LP shall be aired tonight (25 July) on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and on Ben UFO’s Rinse FM show by stating: "some Beautiful Rewind on the radio tonight... check @zanelowe on R1 and @BenUFO on Rinse."

Tune in from 7pm on BBC Radio One and from 9pm on Rinse FM. No release date has been given for the album proper, although its expected to be released on his own Text imprint.

Tomorrowland Festival Releases Its First Comic Book Issue

$

We never thought we'd see the day that a festival would release a comic book about DJs and their festival adventures, but lo and behold, Tomorrowland Comic Issue #1 out of four hits stores and and digital devices this week. It's written by Paul Jenkins who is known for his work on Spider-Man and Wolverine: Origin, and drawn by Stellar Labs who have illustrated comics such as the Hulk and Superman.

For the small price of $3.99, you too can also follow along the adventures of fellow DJs Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, who embark on a festival adventure of saving creativity. On their epic journey, they fight the forces of creation and destruction. The comic serves as a bridge between fantasy and reality, as certain elements in it will be recreated in the festival itself.

Tomorrowland is a spectacle of sound and sight that occurs each year at the end of July in Boom, Belgium, run by ID&T. Stages are crafted with fairy tales in mind, full of detail and large in size. The world's most popular DJs in the world gather to play this event, from Carl Cox to Swedish House Mafia.

In the press release, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike (in real life) said, "Paul Jenkins is one of our heroes. We loved working with him on this story and the way he brought this to the next level. We just created a new universe that we're going to expand exponentially in the next few years!" The two of them are the faces of Tomorrowland having written the official anthem of the festival with Dada Life, and now star the pages of its comic book.

Dusky is crossing the pond and hitting North American shores this September, hitting up fourteen cities or their month-long tour. They're fresh off of their latest release 'Mr Man' which is out now on Anjunadeep, and has been featured on the "Anjunadeep 05" compilation mixed by James Grant and Jody Wisternoff. It doesn't stop there, as this fall they will release on Will Saul's Aus sometime in the fall.

Dusky has risen quickly with already a long repertoire of house and techno productions. They've been invited to the famous BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix last year, just when they began to bud in popularity, only one year after coming together. Their breakout track was "Flo Jams," which was named iTunes Dance Single of the Year. It's an impressive start for the young duo, but it comes after ten years of production work and a lot of time spent listening to all kinds of music. It's only halfway through an otherwise successful 2013 though, and they're heading out West to give North America another taste of their talent.

Photos: Commemorating Your Berghain Exit

There's a new tumblr in town and it's called "I Was at Berghain." No, it's not photos from inside the mysterious infamous place where photography is forbidden, but rather a collection of Instagrams of people as they leave (or arrive) at Berlin's hot spot for house and techno music. Since it is an iconic place that holds a lot of meaning to many people, these photos are intriguing as well as funny, as we all know what a few nights of partying can make us all look like. To see more, click here to visit the page.

The next three are our favorites, particularly the boyfriend slung head down, hanging on to the girlfriend for dear life when she's not faring too well herself after a whole night (or more) of partying. The Instagram shot with the DJ with his hard case suitcase is a particularly humbling moment, as even DJs have to venture outside from their throne of decks inside the dark Berghain walls.

Tinder is one part genius and several parts desperation. The location based dating (read: hook-up) app displays picture based profiles of girls and guys in your geographic location and allows you to "swipe right" to indicate you're interested. If the individuals you've selected swipe right as well then you're connected and can chat. The momentary bump in ego that accompanies being selected by someone you think is cute coupled with the fleeting nature of occupying the same place at the same time can have an interesting effect on users. Sadly it's typically the guys who fare the worst in our selection below and if a woman were to fashion an opinion of men based on these gems she'd likely convert to the pink team for good.

All Day I Dream returns to New York this Sunday for the third time this summer season. As tradition dictates, this weekend’s edition of one of New York’s favorite outdoor parties will have a Burning Man theme. Every year, Lee Burridge dedicates the third party to “fellow burners, first time burners, and those that dream deeply.” He invites guests to test out their Playa clothing in hopes of creating a taste of the atmosphere at Burning Man.

The party will take place at the Well in Brooklyn, an amazing and familiar outdoor space which has hosted ADID parties in the past. Mike Khoury will join Lee Burridge in a back to back set as the daytime socializing turns into intense nighttime dancing. Mike was announced as the New York All Day I Dream resident this summer and has been a great addition to the party series at the last two events. Lee hopes to test out some of the tracks he will play at Burning Man intermixed with what Lee promises to be All Day I Dream summer anthems.

The following pictures from the ADID Fourth of July party on the OfficeOps rooftop speak for themselves, showing just how special and anticipated these parties truly are.

Sydney’s favourite boat party Agwa Yacht Club makes its return for the 2013/14 summer season with two of the hottest names in house music both making their Australian debuts. Montreal via London duo BLOND:ISH and breakthrough act Hunter/Game will headline Agwa Yacht Club 17 upon The Starship on Saturday October 5th, welcoming the party back with a bang.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2008, BLOND:ISH – known separately as DJs Anstascia and Vivie-Ann – have carved out a unique production and DJ recipe, that of provocative basslines combined with smooth textures and sticky vocals which has earned them a burgeoning reputation as fun-loving, infectious party-starters by crowds the world over. For a snapshot of their sound, see the 2012 ‘Lovers In Limbo EP' on Germany’s most respected label, Kompakt. BLOND:ISH are prepped and ready to tear The Starship’s lower deck a proverbial new one.

On the upper deck, Hunter/Game, who will be in fine form - fresh from their residency at Sasha’s Never Say Never party in Ibiza - will get limbs moving with their moody, groovy and infectious deep house sound as found on their releases for Get Physical, Hot Creations and of course Last Night On Earth.

For one party only, Agwa Yacht Club 17 will be taking place later in the afternoon, with The Starship boarding at King Street Wharf at 5:00pm. It will return to Pyrmont Bay at 11pm. First release tickets go on sale for $60+BF on Tuesday August 8th at pulseradio.net/events. For more information head to the facebook page.

The estranged ex-wife of Burning Man director Chris Bently was found dead in her Nevada home last week. The Las Vegas Sun reports that Amber Marie Bently's body was discovered last Friday by a process server who went to deliver her an eviction notice. Bentley had not been reported as missing and authorities claim she had been dead for several weeks.

Amber Bentley was married to Christopher Bently - Burning Man Project Director, former Black Rock Arts Foundation Director and CEO of property management company Bently Holdings - for 10 years, though according to reports it is unknown whether they had ever officially divorced. Along with being an enthusiast and regular attendee of the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, Amber was a jewellery designer and socialite in the San Francisco scene. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

The sad news of her death comes a month out from the 2013 edition of the Burning Man festival - America's biggest party which attracts more than 50,000 free spirits every year. The festival has gained major worldwide attention the past two years, with 2012 the first time the event was officially sold out. One of Burning Man's biggest drawcards for electronic music fans is the Robot Heart bus, which has hosted the likes of DJs Damian Lazarus, Art Department, Lee Burridge, Shaun Reeves and many more.
