WHERE’S THE PARTY AT?

Veteran Fridays: Rob Sloan

It’s that time of the week again, you can feel it, it’s Friday and here at Pulse we bring you a Veteran of the scene - this week we bring a mix from Joint Nation Records’ - Rob Sloan. I thoroughly enjoy the Veteran Friday pieces as I have to delve quite deep in researching the artist we showcase with their mixtape that they do for us exclusively for Pulse

I say this in-part because you read every bio, listen to as much as you possibly can from the artist and time/region permitting, hopefully one can get a chance to sit down and have a one on one with the artist. Rob Sloan’s bio was an interesting read, but coupled with the mixtape that he had done for us, this was just perfect – “This was my preferred delivery method of describing what it is I do to recreate the sculpture of sound vibrations that my vocal passage can’t reproduce…. “.

Let the mixtape from Rob Sloan do the talking today, as they say, the proof is in the pudding, so skip the starters, skip the mains down your drink and dive straight into this treat we have for you from Rob, it certainly proves a pudding! Lovely work Rob Sloan.

If you’re in Jozi town tonight, Rob Sloan will be playing the TOYTOY party along with Bruno Morphet, Grant van Rensburg and Fabio – if it’s a good grooving boogie you’re looking for, this is it. See our ‘What’s Happening’ article released later today for further details. For now, Rob Sloans Pulse mix:

Pulse Radio Presents KaZantip Bound: Robert Dietz

Pulse Radio is heading out to the Republic of Kazantip this summer! We're very excited to join in with countless paradiZers, old and new, in the event that marks the freedom of love and expression in the town of Popivka in Ukraine. As we prepare to go, we are chatting with a few of the DJs who are playing this grand gathering with over 300 acts, to find out how they pack for such a trip, hear their KaZantip stories, and see what they have been up to. Read on to uncover more about not just the artists, but the history of the KaZantip Republic as well.

Hailing from Frankfurt, Germany, Robert Dietz is a name that has quickly risen in demand for the underground house music scene. With releases on labels such as Cadenza, Saved Records, Air London, and Cécille Numbers, Dietz's accomplishments in producing and DJing has earned him a spot on the roster of prominent artist management agency, Loco Dice's own Artist Alife.

October of 2012 saw him release his first compilation, Arkitekt 001. The compilation was well received, showing that when it comes to the full spectrum of electronic music, Robert knows the name of the game. Dietz has had quite the busy summer already. He's played Loco Dice's Used + Abused party at Ushuaia Ibiza, Love Family Park in Germany, in addition to playing in New York this weekend and Ibiza throughout the entire season before he packs his suitcase for KaZantip Republic! Before he heads out though, we caught up with him to see how he's preparing for this excursion and what he's looking forward to!

Which parties will you be playing in The Republic of Kazantip this season? I will be part of the Loco Dice and Friends stage on Sunday, August 4th this season with artists like Marcel Dettmann, Hector, and of course Loco Dice.

Have you been before? If yes, everyone seems to have a few memories to share about the experience. What do you think of when kaZantip comes to mind? Unfortunately, I’ve never been so far to be a part of this event, but I heard so many wild and great stories about it that I can’t wait to experience it on my own.

Kazantip draws paradiZers (as attendees are called) from around the world, but a lot come from Russia. Have you had experience playing in Russia before? How would you describe the crowd? A couple of times already I had the chance to play in Moscow and I really enjoyed it. The people are very open minded and dedicated to the kind of music I play. In general I have the feeling that the crowd in this part of the world is very hedonistic and joyful. Good vibes everywhere.

Kazantip is hosted in the town of Popivka, Ukraine. Have you played elsewhere in Ukraine? First time for me in the Ukraine as well. I’m a so-called virgin.

Kazantip requires a viZa which concert-goers purchase as you would a ticket. Is there a time when a visa problem has prevent you from playing a gig or delayed you significantly? Of course these kind of issues occur every now and then, which is always very disappointing for the fans in the country you want to travel to and to yourself. I couldn't make it to Algiers twice already as my visa got delayed but I had the chance to replace these gigs on another date.

Kazantip's symbol is its yellow suitcases called chamadans, which when decorated allow paradiZers to attend for free when they apply to the republic. As a traveling artist what’s a good packing tip you can share with our readers? If you’re bringing equipment with you, how do you make sure to fit it all in? Well, my technical and most important equipment I always carry in my hand luggage to make sure I’m always able to perform. My clothes usually go to the check in… You can still play in the same clothes like the day before, as nobody will recognize your bad smell, but the equipment to work stays always close to me.

Kazantip marks the second half of the summer season, what have been some of your standout experiences this season? Standout experiences during the summer are always the festivals, especially the open air ones. I just played an extended set at Love Family Park in Germany the other weekend and it was definitely one of my highlights this summer.

Kazantip loves music all day and night. Do you have any releases or albums that you are currently working on? Summer time is touring time and that means I’m completely out of the studio work but I was able to work on quite a few things before, which are going to be released in the next couple of months.

Kazantip first started as a gathering of windsurfers who came together to dance to techno and trance after a windsurfing competition on the Black Sea. Since then it has grown into the republic it is today. Have you tried windsurfing or surfing in general? Do you enjoy it? I never tried surfing before and to be honest I have a lot of respect towards the open sea and its power. I can imagine that it is a great experience to surf, but I’m not sure if I’m the right person for that.

Kazantip has over 300 DJs playing this event. How long will your stay in the Kazantip Republic be and who are you looking forward to seeing play in your downtime? To be honest I won’t have much time unfortunately to explore the rest of the festival, as we are flying in and out. Of course, I will try to see as much as possible during the night of our show but I can’t stay longer to hang out and enjoy this massive event. Next year I will make sure though to get lost for a few days…

Kazantip's official color is orange. in order to add some color to life.. Does your wardrobe incorporate a lot of orange? What’s your favorite piece? Not really, to be honest. My wardrobe actually contains almost only black clothes. It's a kind of uniform for me and it always looks elegant. But of course for the summer, orange has its impact and it looks great on tanned skin.

It’s hot here in the US of A and it’s also Friday so our thoughts are drifting to weekend plans, places where we might be able to enjoy a dip in a pool, the sea or listen to our favorite tunes in the ice-box of a dark club. But there’s another way to stay cool in this oppressive summer heat that we here at Pulse Radio wholeheartedly endorse. Champagne Facials.

While I feel comfortable sharing this video and pictures with you, it would border on rude for me to share the memories they bring to mind. For more of this ilk and to read more about the “gentleman” who created this phenomenon, Kirill of Kirillwashere.com fame, scroll down to the bottom for an interview with the Moscow born photographer as well as a tumblr chock full of his greatest spits.

Things got a little hectic this past weekend with the four day Lightning in a Bottle festival at Lake Skinner in Temecula, California. It was more than just a music festival as it combines music with art and human expression. It is clear from the following photos that the event is a very unique experience, with many of the same elements as Burning Man occurring next month. In the spirit of the event, guests dressed up in elaborate costumes ranging from jungle animals to tribal people and military personnel. Artists featured at Lightning in a Bottle included names such as Nicolas Jaar, Rusko, Purity Ring, and Lee Burridge. After looking through the photos, we can’t wait for next year!

Camp Bisco XII Rocks Upstate New York in Most Successful Year Yet

It was around midnight as a line of red rear-lights snaked along a single-lane road in rural upstate New York. The air was hot and muggy, but the occupants of every car in line did not seem to mind as they were buzzing with excitement on the eve of the twelfth annual Camp Bisco Festival. Located at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York, just outside of Albany, Camp Bisco is an electronic dance music festival that spans a wide variety of sub-genres within electronic music. The MCP Presents music festival entered its twelfth year in conjunction with its hosts, The Disco Biscuits, an electronic jam band that has generated a tremendous and nearly cult following over the years at Bisco along with their six studio albums.

Camp Bisco is three days of nonstop music and good vibes with concerts starting at 12pm and going until around 2am, at which time festival goers find themselves with a plethora of post-concert options including the all-night Silent Disco or spontaneous parties in their own camping lots and recreational vehicle areas. Its two main stages, big tent, and label tent each had some amazing sets. Of course, the main attractions were the artists, and Bisco certainly did not disappoint with its outstanding line-up this year.

The first day set the tone of the weekend with great performances from the likes of Strip Steve and Destructo. Their smooth, yet energetic music, incorporating elements of deep house and a hint of nu disco, was a great precursor to the larger acts like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as well as STS9. The absolutely killer sets from Seven Lions and Flux Pavilion at the big tent kicked things into high gear with their spacey and fast paced dubstep, respectively. Trap from the likes of RL Grime and Flosstradamus brought down the roof with pounding bass that made moving ones hips to the beat impossible to resist. Amidst a number of other artists who deserve shout outs, Dillon Francis completely captivated his audience with his signature moombahton style accompanied by the stage-antics that his fans have come to know and love. Boys Noize closed out the night of headliners in the big tent with a great set as well.

Friday kept up the momentum with some great performances from namely, The Disco Biscuits, Clockwork, Paper Diamond, and Baauer, all of which represented the variety of genres that the festival had to offer. The light show that accompanied the melodic rhythm and groovy harmonies of The Disco Biscuits was truly unforgettable. Bassnectar, notching in his seventh year at Bisco, left even the sober viewer speechless following a set that could not be described with mere words. Excision Presents: Destroid also delivered a mesmerizing show that, despite one’s hesitation at using such a description, was truly "face melting." Their live music featuring hard dubstep smashed the crowd like the bluntest of blunt hammers… this being said in a good way. However, arguably one of the best sets of the weekend was played by Designer Drugs in the smaller label tent. Their extremely high energy sound was just the right blend of hard electronic and dubstep styles that left the viewer with that warm fuzzy feeling at the end.

Camp Bisco finished the weekend on a high note with highlights from Zeds Dead, Crizzly, Gramatik, Dirtyphonics Live and many more. As expected, both Tommy Trash and Madeon brought the EDC and Ultra feel to Bisco with their respective takes on high energy progressive house sets. Though the music was obviously the central attraction for Bisco attendees, it certainly was not the sole source of the overall magic. Camp Bisco has a culture, which everyone there seems to consciously or subconsciously understand. Whether it was the ritualistic exchange of rave bracelets between people or simply striking up a conversation with complete strangers at the water line, all those who attended truly seemed to share an unspoken bond.

On a side note, the free water was a plus, if not a necessity. With a number of single-day festivals where water is still an egregiously charged commodity, I give props to MCP Presents on not following suit. After all, in such environments, a lack of free water can become a serious health hazard. With that, it should be mentioned that Camp Bisco has beefed up its emergency medical personnel compared to previous years. It increased its paramedic personnel and physicians, while having five medical tents positioned around the grounds. Camp Bisco employs a private security force often referred to as 'the bikers of the Indian Lookout Country Club.' Despite a certain stigma that may go along with the image of security personnel, there are first-hand accounts of them being extremely helpful and looking out for the overall safety of the campers.

Another new aspect of the festival this year was the addition of free workshops where campers could take part in a number of great activities. The workshops ranged from body art, go-go dancing, gloving, concert lighting, sonic healing and meditation, and DIY festival clothing designs. Campers could participate in any of these activities, adding to the fun atmosphere that Camp Bisco has developed over the years. With the three day general admission tickets only setting you back around $185, this roughly thirty-thousand-people festival is by far not only one of the best bangs for your buck, but also one of the most worthwhile events in the world.

Danny Tenaglia: What Retirement?

$
0
0

If you’ve been listening to house music since before it began to crossover into the cultural zeitgeist of America’s last two years then you undoubtedly are well aware of the legendary Danny Tenaglia. The Brooklyn-born DJ has been traveling the world playing his signature blend of disco infused house since getting his start in 1976, interspersing his own edits seamlessly with the latest underground anthem you haven’t had the privilege of hearing yet.

Last summer, he created controversy when he announced he’d be stepping back from his exhaustive touring schedule and many thought he was hanging up his headphones for good.   While he has been making markedly less appearances worldwide ever since he's not done destroying dancefloors by any means. We took the chance to ask him some important questions ahead of his very special appearance at Brooklyn’s Output this Sunday, July 21.

It was roughly a year ago that you initially announced your hiatus. In the time since then you seem to have chosen your gigs very wisely and presumably have a much less exhaustive travel schedule. What has been your secret to finding that balance?

Well first I'd like to thank you for saying "hiatus" as opposed to retirement as many people all over the world took what I said as me "throwing in the towel" which was obviously the furthest from the truth. I had posted on my FB page from a place of deep frustration and anger with things that were building up and going wrong in travels (especially overseas) and I just needed time to simply stay close to home and re-think how I will approach my future with gigs near and far.

The secret to that balance was me contacting Emma Hoser at AM Only here in the US and Lynn Cosgrove at Safehouse UK to represent me which is something I have never been associated with before, meaning being on a roster of DJ's within an agency, but I did already have wonderful relations with them and several others and this year it became official.

I could answer more deeply regarding this situation as to what my boiling point was, but not today as there isn't enough time.  However, I would love to clear the record and set a few cruel people straight that were saying things like I had a sex change (lol I kinda love that one though-people can BE so crazy and shady but I'm not far from Twisted with humor myself) or a booze and cocaine addict, etc. If this were true I'd be man enough to say yes I have this problem, but alcohol and drugs were 100% never my problem and thank God! My issues were related to human emotions dealing with loss in family, turning 50 and a great sense of uncertainty as to where this was all going. EDM was now a whole new ball game and I was becoming unsure of where I fit into it all since I still see myself as that little kid from Brooklyn, NY whose heart is still inside "intimate" venues. Despite having played on some of the biggest stages and stadiums the past 15 years, my style could not be more opposite then what is on these main stages today! So I needed to figure out my "relevance" in 2013 and beyond and I think I'm finally starting to see it, but it's often a very complicated and hard to digest reality, but I know I am blessed and I am beyond grateful.

Unfortunately earlier this year the world lost an artist whom you've worked on several projects with in the past, Peter Rauhofer. As many people have spent time looking back at his career since then, what stands out to you amongst his many contributions to the world of dance music and music as a whole?

This was definitely extremely unexpected and tragic news to the dance music community, especially to the gay community since Peter had gone on to undoubtedly hold the title as the most consistent DJ to continually remix some of the world's biggest artists and bring their music to dance floors, homes, cars. shops with his various CD compilations. He traveled constantly as a DJ, ran a record label and was an extremely hard worker. We never worked on any music together but were both recognized as the 2 most important artists associated with Rob DiStefano's Tribal Records and then Twisted Records circa 1994-1999. We remixed several of the same artists and he remixed my single "Ohno" and I remixed his single called "Drama". I pray his soul is resting above us. This was definitely a shock and a "gone too soon" story.

You've gotten a chance to play at Output before, as recently as June 8th and you're returning there this Sunday, July 22. It's not easy to build a club that really stands out and makes an impact these days in such a crowded marketplace. What do you believe are some of the secrets to their success in this instance?

Passion! I knew that without a doubt this place was going to be massive in sound, wonderful in design and successful having known Nicolas Matar of Cielo personally, and the partners that he was about to embark on this project with. Cielo had laid out the groundwork for something bigger and better for almost a decade and the timing of how Williamsburg, Brooklyn (where I happened to be born and raised) was a great choice of location since it is one of the most up and coming areas of NYC, booming like no other area with condos, hotels, businesses and parks. The timing was definitely on their side and I could not be happier for them as well as my dear friend and promoter Benny Soto who has worked for Cielo almost 10 years now managing and promoting events. He definitely sold me on this place long before its grand opening and once they gave me a preview tour I was instantly convinced that it would be the most important club NYC has witnessed in a very long time.

Yesterday Rolling Stone announced that you would be compiling a DJ Mix for Electric Zoo. To look at how irrelevant house music seemed in much of America for most of your career is it surreal to be listed as one of their 25 DJs that rule the earth and have them be an outlet for news about your career?

Yes, this is still something that is very surreal to me, but is such an amazing honor and achievement. So much was happening for me at the same time which is why I said earlier that my reality was often complicated and hard to digest. This coincided with me being the first DJ ever to be inducted into The DJ Mag Hall Of Fame which was held in conjunction with their Top 100 DJ awards during ADE in Amsterdam. I had my own panel and discussion there hosted by Tommy Sunshine as well as a very successful event which then prompted a call for me to perform at Barclays Stadium right after for the world famous "Sensation" event. The list goes on, but these 3 of many really stuck out and I guess I got to a point where I needed to pinch myself and say: Hey, stop beating yourself up! You are important, relevant, and most of all I started to understand that maybe I did make more of a difference in dance music history in the past 20 years since my first LP "Hard & Soul" (and performing in 35 countries since 1993) than I would give myself credit for. This even goes back further to 1976 when I got my first DJ gig in Brooklyn and have never once turned back since. Music is my life! Music is my purpose and I guess "Music truly IS the Answer" - for me, no doubt.

Having been in the business so long, you've got a very deep base of fans and friends within the industry who are always sure to be seen at your shows. But as EDM (the amalgamation of electro/progressive/trance/dubstep) continues to take hold of the US festival going masses, have you ever experienced any of the drawbacks of this phenomenon at any recent appearances? Would fans ever be able to catch you at more bombastic type event where the production at some times overpowers the music something like EDC or Tomorrowland?

I've had a roller coaster of emotions about where this was all headed in the past 10 years or more. I have been performing at big festivals for a very long time i.e. Love Parade, Creamfields, Electric Zoo, BPM, Coachella, EDC, Ultra, Homelands, Exit, Rock in Rio, Brighton Beach UK, Olympic Stadium, Montreal, etc, and I guess the signs were on the wall with what was about to all come from this. It started with massive raves, outlaw parties and then once "trance" became a household word with big DJ's like Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Sasha, Digweed, etc. This paved the way for guys like Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, Markus Schultz and everyone else who is on top of the charts and we saw it growing and growing and growing. I guess it took me a while to realize that even if I wasn't the biggest fan of trance or commercial music, I saw how this should not affect me and could even help me to be appreciated and understood for what I was doing. I always looked up to Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath and the Circo Loco events as this is where I saw myself fitting in with my equal love for Techno and House and figured if they are all doing so wonderfully then I should always have a place somewhere in this scene as I also never set out to have my own stages with massive productions, visuals, etc. I preferred to simply be hired to play and spend all my time going thru my music and working in the studio on exclusive versions and edits for my sets. I've been offered to host my own tents and have done a few over the years. I will headline a few this summer as well, but I don't think I will ever get into having anything inside these tents or on these stages ever become more important than the music. Although it can often be very impressive and extremely effective, I basically don't care much about the big LED screens and the visuals especially if it is behind me. It can often be too big of a distraction like watching a movie in a drive thru instead of hearing wonderful music and dancing to it. However, I do care deeply and immensely about what is coming out of the speakers and into everyone's ears, minds and hearts.

There is an infamous photo of you and Michael Jackson but during the Studio 54 days there were basically legends covering every square foot of the place. I recently read Nile Rodgers'"Le Freak" where he details some interesting stories during his time there. Did you ever get to meet Nile? What's a story that stands out to you from the club-good or bad?

That was way back in 1982. I was visiting a friend, DJ Frank Corr, who was helpful to me in getting a few gigs between NY, Long Island and Miami in the early 80's and it was a complete surprise but more of a major shock when he walked into the booth as no one even knew he was there! There was a VIP birthday party happening in a private room for Yul Brenner and many celebrities were there but we were oblivious. MJ walked into the booth with security and one of his nephews. I was the first person he sees and reaches out his white glove and shook my hand. I recall being speechless with my knees shaking in disbelief! He looked at the DJ and lighting gear and didn't stay very long. A moment I will never forget....ever. I never got to play there when it was the most famous club in the world as I was barely 21 and was just lucky to have witnessed it many times. Several years later I got to play there for a struggling party as it was no longer the Legendary Studio 54 of the 70's but at least I can say I played music in that legendary building even if it there was hardly 300 people! Also I have met Nile Rogers a few times but unfortunately it was always when there was a lot of chaos like at Music Conferences or at a music event. Never had the honor to sit and talk with him one on one. It would be an honor.

Lil Kim's Set Cancelled At Lovebox After Failure to Show

London's infamous Lovebox Festival was abound with rumours this weekend, notably about the reasons behind Lil' Kim's failure to play yesterday afternoon.

The ex Junior M.A.F.I.A rapper had been scheduled to play the main stage at 6.10pm but at around 6.40 she had still not appeared. Shortly after this it had been decided by organisers to pull her set from the schedule. Organisers have issued a statement reading:

"Lil’ Kim did not turn up to her set on time. The festival had no other option but to maintain the scheduled running order to ensure the other main stage acts were not disrupted".

The star - due to make a comeback on single 'Looks Like Money' this month - later tweeted that her absence was a result of “circumstances out of her control”. Other acts that played included D’Angelo, DJ Harvey, Bicep, Paul Kalkbrenner, Azealia Banks and SBTRKT.

You can read a rather sharp interview that she gave to The Guardian over the weekend here.

As often stated, vinyl can offer the truest and richest audio experience when listening to your favourite music - plus it can also make for a great tool for some DJ wizadry. Underneath are further picks of some of the reasons why vinyl junkies and audiophiles LOVE their beloved format - and the things that poor ol' digital file technology just can't offer. Read it and weep, iTunes.

The sweet sound of a needle hitting the record...

The surface hiss and noise that only comes off a vinyl...

Discovering hidden record shops and re-arranging your plans for the afternoon...

Cute little 45 RPM singles...

Delightfully raw, no frills white label test-pressings... scherWING!

The good old fashioned art of crate digging...

So what that it's more expensive? Everyone loves a shiny coloured vinyl...

The treasure trove that is the bargain bin...

Having a wondorous spectacle of a collection that takes up an entire wall in your living room...

And of course... being a DJ!

Deadmau5: Five track bomber on Soundcloud

Yesterday Deadmau5 went on a Soundcloud rampage and dropped five tracks on his profile. As expected the five new tracks, somewhere up here (fin), going nowhere fast, anywhere down there, anywhere up here and Entschuldigen Sie racked up thousands of listens in only a few hours since upload.

The tracks move from one side of the spectrum to the other with ‘Somewhere Up Here’ being a ‘crunchy’ tune with licks of rock guitar following the beat of arena-sized drums while ‘Going Nowhere Fast’ starts with the Moroder-style arps quickly picking up tempo and sound-scapingly takes you on a trip.

Have a listen to the five track bomb he dropped yesterday:

Just Move Records: Pulse Radio reviews Romeo C’s tracks

Romeo C - Gotto Be In Love (Original Mix)

Romeo C from Just Move Records brings in ‘Gotto Be In Love’ well mellow with the classic hat construction and a cutting clap, with the moving conga drums he sets up the groove just right before the vocal eases in, wording the name of the track. Intimately layered with the sound scape design the tracks comes off thought provoking and when the female vocal drops in, the space that’s opened up in the track is a great experience with all the intricate sounds nudging it along quite nicely.

Romeo C – Your Better Groove (Original Mix)

The tempo picks up slightly on this groove, the stage is still a stylish, mellow groove with quirky organ licks that show face through the long sustained keys that tie everything together through the track. The vocal sample has been worked well and placed strategically through the experience holding you close. The sequencing of the afro elements makes for an easy listen with everything else layered in makes for an easy listen.

Romeo C – Something (Original Mix)

Slowed down, the vocal brings us into this one, playing the desk on entry with the keys trickling in slowly forming the sequence that picks you up later for a smooth groove to a driving drum beat but far from over-powering. The blend of sounds and the way the vocals have been used is a great experience though-out, it takes you up then brings you back down nice and gently. Very easy listening.
