Carl Craig - Masterpiece

Carl Craig
Masterpiece
Ministry of Sound

The reverence in which Detroit techno is held is often misplaced; the city in which the Belleville Three started a localised strand of electronic music that had previously gestated in Europe has matured beyond a genre but also a concept. ‘Detroit’ is not used geographically but adjectively, often in a respectful description of a sound that has some sort of electronic honesty.

By and large, the concept of Detroit techno is ascribed by some to be tantamount to a religion, bound by a place and a generation that we will never see again; Atkins, May and Saunderson are worshipped as demigods while Hood, Craig and Mills could be considered as high priests. But as proven by Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier and Luke Slater, Detroit techno isn’t confined to its city limits but reflective of music’s fluid nature. Masterpiece, created by Carl Craig is not a typical compilation mix-CD, but more akin to something which might fill the gaps in what any techno fan could mistakenly believe to be the heart and soul of Detroit techno.

Across three discs (a rarity today given the rise of the digital format), Masterpiece shares three important facets of Carl Craig; his djing, his past and his creative undercurrent are hinted by the names of each individual disc; Aspiration, Inspiration and Meditation.

Aspiration reflects the experience that could ordinarily be encountered when seeing Carl Craig in club-mode. Contributions from Kyle Hall, Huxley and Loco Dice feature early, while the back end of the mixed disc includes highlights from Tom Trago, Ben Sims and the awesome Moodymann remix of Rick Wilhite’s Drums Patterns & Memories.

Inspiration is without a doubt the highlight of the three discs, as the selection of tracks have been chose to reveal what has driven Carl Craig as an artist and producer. One would not consider that Nate Dogg could ever possibly feature on a Carl Craig release, or even on Ministry of Sound which has published Masterpiece, but tracks by The Temptations, Muddy Waters and Erykah Badu highlight that soul, blues and rap have all contributed to Carl Craig’s musical development. This is supplemented by the esoteric (Moritz von Oswald’s Cocoon Dark Dub and the nu-jazz Mira by Melody Gardot) the atmospheric (Noah’s Ark by David Lynch) and the classic (Kevin Saunderson’s Feel The Mood under pseudonym E-Planet into Derrick May’s Icon).

The final disc, Meditation, is six tracks of organic movement that removes Carl Craig from being a mere producer into pure musical composition. Whilst it is not something that would usually grab a Detroit techno fiend, Meditation demonstrates that the limits of Carl Craig’s talents are not so easily identified. Carl Craig contemporary Jeff Mills frequently performs with an orchestra, although Meditation brings an intimacy that envelops the listener and rewards an open mind.

A card-carrying, paid up member of the Detroit techno fan alliance should consider owning Masterpiece. It may enlighten as to who Carl Craig musically is, or it could bring surprise and disappointment that there is more to C2 than a fist-pumping, aural explosion. Yet, Masterpiece serves as an example that the ‘sound’ of Detroit techno isn’t something that is sonically definable; it is a crucible of elements and influences that have evolved into what techno is today, and Carl Craig’s own story of how he got here.

Nick Clegg - leader of the Liberal Democrats and one half of the supposed British coalition government - has nominated Ministry of Sound's founder James Palumbo for a peerage in the House of Lords.

James Palumbo started Ministry of Sound in 1991 in Elephant & Castle, South London, opening the club without an alcohol license and inadvertently being the first nightclub to open. It's been reported that Palumbo - a life long supporter of the Lib Dems - has donated £500,000 to the party and even let the Lib Dems use the nightclub as their party headquarters during the last mayoral election.

Palumbo is expected to be on the new list of peers to enter the House of Lords, which will be announced over the next two weeks.

H-Foundation & David Durango
Paint It Black
Supplement Facts (Release: 15/07/2013)

The recently reformed H-Foundation have been making quite the splash over the last few months, exciting long-time fans with their comeback and winning over new fans in the process by retaining their raw, stripped-back West Coast house vibes from the early 2000s but injecting them with contemporary European techy flavour. On Paint It Black, the duo team up with equally seasoned David Durango for two classy cuts of deep, chugging goodness.

Surface is tailor-made for dark rooms with low ceilings and crowds that don’t mess around and just want to dance. A driving, stabby bassline and precise percussive grooves propel the track and give it that unmistakable H-Foundation “roll’, while Durango’s input becomes clear once the quirky effects, warbled vocals and haunting synths make an appearance. It’s an interesting meeting of sounds that on paper might sound incongruous, but it definitely works once Surface pounds out of the speakers.

On the flip, Canvas takes a deeper approach. A sultry, slow-burning tech house jam, Canvas shines thanks to it warm, funky chords, breathy vocal samples and shuffly hi-hat rhythms. Every now and then the chords will burst out of the mix thanks to some handy filter work, which adds a sense of dynamism and fluidity to the track without killing its hypnotic, inviting groove.

Paint It Black is a great collaboration which highlights each of its contributor’s strengths and plays up to them.

The Sprite Uncontainable Talent Search is back in search for Hip Hop’s best in three criteria: Emcees, Dancers and Graffiti. The next Sprite star will be judged and deemed the winner according to three names who have been selected as the official judges for the event. They are Mernoly P. Simba, Sizwe “Reason” Moeketsi and Falko.

Falko, a highly experienced graffiti artist is regarded as an integral part of the foundation and development of South Africa’s graffiti scene. Falko created a platform in South Africa for aspiring writers. Simba, from Masters of Rhythm is widely recognised as the founder of the New School Street Dancing in South Africa and finally Reason, who has collaborated with many of South Africa’s prominent Hip-Hop artists such as AKA and Proverb.

The judges say that the motivation for accepting the positions as judge had a lot to do with the fact that they will not only be judges, but will have the opportunity to mentor individuals at a mentor workshop on the 7th and 8th of August, which is something many in the industry do not get a chance to do. The workshop’s space will be filled with the top 12 semi-finalists who will be announced on the 27 July.

This campaign of 2013 will include a trip to the USA for the top 3 contestants who will no doubt have the experience of a lifetime. Navigate your way to the Official Sprite Hip Hop Website to find out more.

The King Returns: Carl Cox The Revolution Opening Party at Space Ibiza

$

As the summer unfolds in Ibiza, parties, people and resurging hits have begun to filter back into the white stretches of sand, the luxurious new bars, and of course, the glorious walls of the island's infamous clubs. But so far this year, it's felt like there's been something lacking. That bit of sparkle, the buzz and magic that makes the island remain an attractive prospect for fans of dance and club culture hasn't quite reached its usual fever point.  This was the case up until last Tuesday, however, when Ibiza got the kick up the ass that it's needed all summer - the big happy Buddha himself, Carl Cox, rocked up with The Revolution opening party.

With Coxy's legendary Tuesday night parties at Space now in their 12th year, it's clear that he's still got his fingers on the pulse when it comes to musical selection. With a multi-national audience spanning age and style, last Tuesday's opening party had all the right ingredients for a successful party - a great mix of patrons, a quality space and enough anticipation to cause a veritable buzz in the run up to the opening party. The buzz for Tuesdays opening had been hyped up over the past few weeks with Coxy's face popping around the island in the form of masks, and "Oh Yes…Oh Yes" signs were seen held up in pride and anticipation of the king's return at many of the big events. You know when the Carl Cox crew are in town as the islands promo steps up a notch and one of the faithfuls are never more then ten feet away from you.

Unlike the rest of the world, Ibiza dwellers don't tend to follow a schedule dictated by the days of the week. Instead, people refer to their days by the nights they frequent, so while the rest of the world sees Mondays as the dreaded start to a long, harsh week, we refer to it as DC10 or Cocoon. Sundays are usually reserved for We love, Fridays it's Music On, but once mid-July rolls around, Tuesdays on this magical island mean one thing only - one of the globe's most respected, long-serving and trusting DJs in the world.

Future Disco's Sean Brosnan kicked off proceedings with some of the finest house bombs around as the crowd steadily multiplied and people got in the groove. Following him was Maxxi Soundsystem, who took it up a notch and set the tone for what was to come through a mix of etheral sounds and familiar, '90s tinged beats. As the chunky disco house sound makes a return to dance music proper, many of the Ibiza revelers can't seem to get enough of it, perfectly reflected at the Revolution as the room began to cramp up as the timbres and bars were cranked out.

Space's main room is considered a mecca of clubbing, partly due to the custom-tweaked FunktionOne's ability to carry you closer to the booth, as if literally riding the sound waves. Nic Fanciulli had started ripping through the speakers with some deep, chuggy house numbers, before Dubfire brought his warped &  funky brand of flatline techno, taking the crowds through a twisting journey and suitably priming them nicely for the evening's headliner.

Meanwhile, the covered terrace was on top form as DC-10 queen and Carl Cox Revolution first timer Tania Vulcano kept the vibe subdued and dirty, blending a sweet and sassy mix of chunky and straight up techno. DJ Sneak then helmed the decks, with pure, unashamed funky and jackin' house that kept booties shaking and popping all set long.

Finally it was Cox's turn, notching it up with his raging brand of electro tinged, rip roaring techno, grabbing the mic in pure Coxy fashion, giving the crowd exactly what it wanted - 'Oh yes, oh yes! Space Ibiza, how you feeling?!' The crowd lost it; we lost it and the ice cannons blasted and the beats dropped hard, fast and furiously. Carl is back in his rightful spot and perched on his throne - we can't wait for another massive season with the king of Ibiza.

Madiba – The Original “Jiver”

$

When Nelson Mandela and his wife walked hand in hand out of the prison gates on 11 February 1990, we were watching a moment that would long stand in our memory as one of the most monumental days of South Africa.

This was the day that Madiba stood before his people and declared ‘our march to freedom is irreversible’. People danced and sang in the streets for some believed that the days of apartheid were coming to an end.

Madiba is truly fond of a good dance or as it has been dubbed ‘the Madiba Jive’. When the music starts and finds its way into your system causing your skin to rise-up, like the hair on the back of your neck and the people of South Africa against apartheid, the goose bumps, the smiles, the melodies of freedom and the irresistible urge to jive for the future no longer looks as gloomy as it may have before, one can’t help to want to join in.

Madiba, the original “jiver”, the humble man who did so much for our country and the world respectively deserves a song, he deserves a jive – our thoughts are with the great man on the approach to his 95th birthday on the 18th of July.

We’ve put together some pics of the Madiba Jive with a Youtube video from South African DJ Euphonik about what Nelson Mandela stood for, backed by a groove that will be sure to get your jive on. Tomorrow we will follow up with more Madiba magic.

Soulistic Music’s DJ/Producer Nathi Maphumulo famously known as ‘Black Coffee’ is getting ready to grace Greece, not for the first time, with his exceptional skills behind the ones and two’s with his particular taste in Afro-House along with DJ Angelo. The two have done it before together but this time round The Greece Summer Tour 2013 will span over four consecutive days starting on the 1 August and finishing off on the 4th August that takes South Africa’s Black Coffee to Athens, Mykonos, Zakynthos and finally finishing off in Patra before he moves on.

Black Coffee really needs no introduction and one visit on the social media platform such as his artist  Facebook profile will verify that as you will see that he is one of, if not South Africa’s largest export in House music and sub-genre’s therein. He has been taking his Black Coffee flavour around the globe with utmost success at the events he has been asked to play so you can be quite sure that it will be no different for Greece. This trip for Black Coffee is a special one at that as he had a moment for himself during his travels in Greece – have a look at the photo with Black Coffee at the sign post that was captioned by himself “The moment I changed the way I saw myself as a brand” – I can understand that. For good measure we’ll link you to his sounds, nothing wrong with a Tuesday groove from Black Coffee to get you keen for a mid-week meander to the dancefloors.

WiLDKATS
Rock D' Disco
Smoke N' Mirrors
July 16th

The Wildkats have graced us with their new EP "Rock D'Disco" on Smoke N' Mirrors. Released today, Tuesday July 16th, the EP is an exploration of disco toned synths meshed with a satisfyingly forthright bass. The UK trio has had successful releases on Get Physical, Hot Creations, and OFF Recordings, and now appropriately for their new disco flavored release, on San Francisco's Smoke N' Mirrors imprint.

The EP's name sake "Rock D' Disco" and "The Weekend" both feature a male vocal that loops in and out of the track that draw you into the groove. Tboy's vocals flare up "Rock D' Disco" accompanied by percussion and of course, a driving bassline. "The Weekend" has winding synths that overlay a drum ensemble.

The gem on this EP is "Rub Me Up & Down" featuring the incendiary and unconventional vocals of Amanda. The track is filled with acid house tinges that are accompanied by the constant "tink" of the cowbell. With provocative lyrics of showers, soft towels, and lotion rubbing, Amanda adds the sultry atmosphere to the track, as it gives us the nostalgia for TB303's and TR909's. Wildkats take acid house, and give it the updated deep house twist, making this a track that will hit hard on the dance floor.

You can purchase it on Beatport here.

The artists featured in the showcase include U&I, the first act signed to Mind of a Genius, who produces deep house tracks with disco and R&B influences. They are well known for their remix of The xx’s “Together,” which was played over 25,000 times in the first week after its release. Joining U&I is The Bell Boys, a trio of brothers whose music is a meeting of their Midwestern roots and their current influences from residing on the West Coast. Exploring all aspects of electronic music, the line up is joined by Cody DiGerolamo and Friends, a band that features several different instruments and that has been gathering a cult following in the greater Los Angeles area. The opening set will be provided by Wirewalker of Southern California.

The art installation featured at the show will be provided by LAB ART Los Angeles, the largest art gallery in the United States devoted to street art from several different mediums such as painting, drawings, sculpture, and photography. Cotton Citizen, a Los Angeles based t-shirt company, will sponsor the evening as well and will provide free mixtapes to the first 100 guests. Guests are encouraged to wear black for this highly anticipated evening of deep house music at an exciting space that is now being appropriated for electronic music. The message of house is spreading!
