Serotonin Arts is a media label that spans art, fashion, design, and music, with a specialisation in techno and deep house music. The label is spawned from the underground roots of electronic techno, and deep house music in South Africa. The founder has 10 years experience in the South African music industry managing venues, event promoting, and marketing. Serotonin Arts launches the label with the label’s first artist - Cerotonin.

Within 1 month of the Cerotonin website going live, along with pre-release marketing, Cerotonin has already attained international eye-balls anticipating the official launch of Cerotonin’s debut single Circadian Rhythm, released today (24 November 2014).

The debut single Circadian Rhythm by Cerotonin has melodic thumps and joyous vocals that are reminiscent of the deep house we all love, yet it is fabricated with a pulsating, unique sound. A techno/deep house artist on the Serotonin Arts label has released Circadian Rhythm on iTunes, Amazon MP3, Google Play store, Deezer, Spotify and Shazam. The aim of Serotonin Arts is to showcase quality South African talent and bridge the gap between international and local acts, by securing international exposure for the artists and broker international contacts for their careers that will ultimately bring local talent closer to the international stage. The founder of Serotonin Arts plans to do this with his extensive entrepreneurial experience, having sold his first successful business for a profit at the age of 19, as well as professional experience dealings with international artists and companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Tom Novy, Seth Troxler, Neato C, Akon, Canoc Productions, and LoveParty. Therefore, Serotonin Arts plans to release more music and begin scouting for new talent to join the label, as well as explore the other opportunities across media, music, fashion, art and design.

Juan Sanchez: 'The Dutch just love to party'

$

Known as one of Amsterdam's finest techno selectors, Juan Sanchez has been leading the charge in a city that is truly hitting its stride in the last few years. With the world renowned Amsterdam Dance Event, and more clubs and festivals than ever - including December's Time Warp Netherlands - Amsterdam seems poised to become one of the world's best big clubbing capitals. So ahead of next month's blowout, we caught up with Format founder Juan Sanchez to find out his thoughts on a city waiting to burst.

For many years you have been at the heart of Amsterdam’s underground music scene. What is it about the city that you find so special? I love Amsterdam because it’s so small compared to other major cities. When I have a gig downtown I just get on my bike and cycle down there. There is such a rich club scene here. Every weekend there are many places to go to. I think it is just the best city in the world.

The Netherlands, as a whole, seems to have an abundance of huge electronic festivals that continue throughout the different seasons of the year – do you think that these huge events will continue to succeed or is it that we are just at the peak of this electronic epidemic? I’ve been surprised about the amount of festivals we have here for quite some years now but it just keeps on growing and growing. The Dutch just love to party.

You are playing at perhaps the most popular of all the festivals in a couple of weeks. How are you feeling ahead of your appearance at the forthcoming Time Warp in Utrecht, and what do you have in store? I’ve been looking forward to this one ever since I heard that I was booked. I can’t wait to play there. For the last few months I’ve been collecting special tracks, putting them in a special folder waiting to be opened soon. Also I’m planning to bring my Roland TR-8 drum machine to occasionally add some live elements to my set. Expect some peak time techno!

Time Warp has always managed to keep a loyal and dedicated fan base. Do you think this is because of its strong and lengthy commitment to techno, whilst other large events may try and introduce more mainstream genres into their line-ups? Time Warp has always been a strong brand. They’ve been around for a long time and always manage to impress their fans with advanced video and lights techniques and top of the bill line ups.

The festival is also celebrating its 20th anniversary and this year the Dutch scene is stronger than ever. With this impressive homegrown line-up, do you think that the Netherlands club scene has the potential to rival that of nearby Berlin or London? For sure! I think Dutch nightlife has been catching up for the last years compared to the cities you mentioned above. For instance, events like ADE and extending the opening hours for clubs have led to a more international image.

We’ve heard that the famous stage designs and light shows that we have come to expect from Time Warp have again been enhanced for this special event. Do you ever get nervous playing a show on such a large scale? Fortunately not! I get very excited and energetic when show time is almost here. I’ve played many big gigs over the years and I’ve always enjoyed it very much. My approach is slightly different compared to a club gig of course, everything is a bit bigger and rougher and it is always very nice to have some interaction with the visuals and lights to give the audience a cool show.

2014 has been another momentous year for yourself with the launch of your own label, Format Records. Can you tell us a little bit about how that has been? I’ve always wanted to start my own label and this year it finally saw the light of day! The first 3 EPs are released now. The first is from JSSL (a side project of mine) the second is from Qindek (including a remix by Pär Grindvik) and the third is from Doka (including a remix by Tripeo), both highly talented Dutch producers. Running a label is a nice way to enrich your artist profile and create a platform and a way to communicate the sound you love to the world.

With the year coming to a close, what should we be looking out for in the New Year and what are you most looking forward to? I spent lots of time in the studio this year, more then ever really. I’ve a couple of big releases planed for 2015, unfortunately I can’t tell on which labels yet but I can assure you that it is something worth to look out for!

Juan Sanchez plays Time Warp Netherlands on December 6th, 2014.

Art Department
Natural Selection
No.19

8/10

2011’s impressive debut, ‘The Drawing Board’ brought the Toronto duo to everybody’s attention with rich melodies layered on top of sparse production. With ‘Natural Selection’ there aren’t as many catchy hooks, but a few themes seem to breathe life into the LP, namely a more experimental take on production, which sees elements of house, techno, electro and trip-hop.

There’s also an icy feel to the synths sounds throughout the record, conjuring darkness and an ‘80s style retro feel, whilst Kenny Glasgow’s trademark melancholy vocals drift throughout much of the LP, becoming a staple element of the album’s overall tone.

The opener sees a moody and stuttering electro track kick proceedings off in cinematic fashion, growing into a steady skipping rhythm and uplifting pads. These almost retro sounding electro influences are sprinkled across the album, with ‘These Eyes’ featuring similar robotic beats and distorted abrasive synth sounds. Again, the sounds of ‘Crazy’ fit the electro-style mould amongst Kenny Glasgow’s “You drive me crazy” wails.

Some conventional 4/4 sounds are present in the tough sounding techno leanings of ‘The Hunt’ and the energetic house skip of ‘Walls’, which sees the album’s most captivating vocal melody intertwined with minor key pads to create one of the more dance-floor ready cuts on the LP.

Art Department’s collaboration with Seth Troxler stands out, as Troxler channels his inner Moodymann with sultry spoken words which meld with the sleazy instrumentation. The track builds towards a subtle peak as Kenny Glasgow’s vocals float amongst manic synths and stripped back percussion.

Another standout moment on the album is probably the most left-field example on the LP, ‘The Agent’. An echoing spoken word continues throughout the majority of the track, lending an eerie tone, whilst its trip-hop beats hark back to the style of ‘90s beat production popularised by artists like DJ Shadow. ‘The Agent’ employs a similar cut-and-paste approach, with a stop-start hip-hop beat, manipulated vocals and subtle looping organ sounds.

Comprised of 14 tracks, Natural Selection is an eclectic array of music with a host of attention grabbing tracks pushing in different directions. It can be hard to bring these kinds of albums together, but Glasgow and White have managed to combine disparate elements into a cohesive body of work, marrying melancholy, melody and stark atmosphere to excellent effect.

Tracklist:

01. Natural Selection Intro
02. It’s Through
03. The Agent
04. Kisses for Roses feat. Aquarius Heaven
05. JD 4 AD (Interlude)
06. These Eyes
07. The Hunt feat. BLUD
08. Crazy
09. Cruel Intentions feat. Seth Troxler
10. Breathe Easy (Interlude)
11. Walls
12. MACBA (Interlude)
13. In the Wake
14. Catch You By Surprise

Lost Disco Sydney In Pictures

Lost Disco...it was a lineup to die for and boy did it deliver.

International headliners Seth Troxler, Ame, Pachanga Boys and Optimo took to Sydney's Greenwood Hotel over the weekend for a rocking party that will go down as one of the best of 2014.

Highlights? That depends on your flavour. Some were in it for Troxler's upbeat party jams, others were there to get deep and trippy with Ame and the Pachanga Boys. Us? We were blown away by Optimo who held the crowd in the palm of their hands with a set that never once dropped momentum (mixing from stomping techno into the 1979 disco hit 'Don't You Want My Love' by Debbie Jacobs was quite a moment).

We hope you had fun, we certainly did. And we're ready to do it all again in January! Stay tuned to Pulse this Friday for the next Lost Disco announcement and the Finely Tuned facebook page for the full photo gallery.

Sydney Blu: "My Neighbors Hate Me"

$

0

A lot has changed in a year for Sydney Blu. Between touring, managing her record label, Blu Music, curating her infamous BLU Parties and producing a new album, the LA-based Toronto native barely has time for herself. Her new album, Relentless, is set to launch early 2015 and is the product of months of hard work and fine tuning to perfect her new sound. We had a chance to catch up with Sydney to chat about her being on tour, her album, plans for the future and more. The first single, My Neighbors Hate Me, was released on Black Hole Recordings on November 24th so give it a listen, read on and enjoy!

You’ve been pretty busy! You kicked off your tour this month and recently played in your hometown, Toronto. What’s it like playing there? Toronto is the best place in the world to play. I’m so lucky to have come from here. It’s great groundwork for a DJ. The standard for the DJ’s is high and you really have to work hard to make it here. It’s an authentic city, and probably one of the best music scenes in North America.

Do you get homesick? I’m homesick every day, which is why I am answering these questions from Toronto right now. I came here for a month I missed it so much. There has been some talk of moving back next year. I own a home here and my best friends are here. I hate winter, though.

You’re set to hit Miami, SF, Budapest and a bunch of other cities on tour as well. Of all the cities you’ve played in the world, which do you think vibes the best with you/is the most receptive to your sound? Toronto, Miami, Montreal, New York are amazing places to play. I also love Ibiza, of course. San Francisco is also an incredible scene. These places are real and have REAL music lovers. That’s where I want to play. El Paso, Texas also has an incredible music scene.

Your new album, My Neighbors Hate Me, is set to drop early 2015. Word on the street is you will be delivering a newer sound. How has your style evolved since your last album? My album is actually called Relentless. You are the first person I’m telling this to also. My Neighbors Hate Me is the first single on the album and it comes out Monday, November 24. How has my style evolved? I have evolved A LOT in a year as a human and it was definitely reflected in my music. I have been doing this so long, evolution is inevitable. That’s what artists do. Change, for me, is inevitable. I am very happy where I am right now as an artist. I feel like I have evolved now into a sound that I am super proud of because it really represents me and I’m not trying to be anything else. That is where you want to get to in life.

What will remain the same? Which tracks could we listen to instantly recognize Sydney Blu? I think my Mau5trap records are timeless. Both of them, Give it Up for Me and Senses and the Mind (which I like the best out of the 2) represented a time for me where I also evolved. I am not the biggest fan of what electro turned into but I feel like 2008 was when it was actually good and I was a part of that sound. Those were also my first Top 10 records and they definitely represent a time when my life changed a lot. Almost immediately after these records came out I left Canada.

What were you inspired/motivated by while putting this album together? I was inspired to find a sound that really represented me and I didn’t stop making music until I found that. I threw out a lot of records and I was hard on myself with what I allowed on this album. Everything I wrote this year I’m proud of and I’m so excited for you guys to hear this album. The singles will come out first and I imagine it’ll be out by March.

What was the most challenging part of the production process for you (getting started, editing etc.)? Finding a sound that I wanted to stick with. When I changed my sound from 2013 onwards I didn’t wake up one day and instantly know what I was going to make and play. I fee like I experimented for 6-10 months on where I wanted to go musically.

2015 also marks a new year for your party brand, The BLU Party. Can you give us any hints as to what’s in store for this coming year? BLU parties everywhere! The plan is to do them in different cities all over the world with artists that inspire me and I work with. We have done them now in NYC, Toronto, Los Angeles and we are about to do one in Calgary and LA again. Miami WMC/MMW is our annual event and this year it was massive. Our lineup was Riva Starr, Stacey Pullen, Kevin Saunderson, Carlo Lio, Technasia, Uner, Nathan Barato, My Favorite Robot, The Scumfrog, Anthony Atalla, Cocodrills and more. It was an incredible show and now I’m faced with topping this in 2015.

Sometimes, when science and music collide, the result can be a beautiful thing.

Filmed by Shahir Daud, the video uses experiments like the Chladni Plate to visualise sound using sand, the Ruben's Tube, which shoots fire as notes on the keyboard are played, and the Tesla Coil, which arcs electricity around the band in the video's incredible finale.

Aside from being a stunning example of science and music fusing together to create something beautiful, it's also the new video for Nigel Stanford's 'Cymatics.' Watch below.

RVRW In The Face Of Crime – ‘Pick Pocket’: RVRW Feat. Shamon Cassette

Known to many as Cape Town’s “trap and bass hero”, RVRW (pronounced ‘roar’) has released a new single, ‘Pick Pocket’, on independent label Do Work Records.

Do Work Records founder Das Kapital says “RVRW is an artist who is uncompromising in his drive to try new things musically. ‘Pick Pocket’ is a dark and cheeky riddim that I personally can’t get enough of. It’s part hip-hop part club music. It’s all RVRW”.

“Writing this track was a really exciting process” says RVWR. “I wrote 90% of it on a binge writing session one night and only ended up sleeping at 4am. I went in to Red Bull Studios the following Tuesday and started recording with Shamon Cassette. He has tons of energy… super productive. I’m really proud of the track”. The Brooklyn based MC explains the lyrics: “I feel comfortable wherever I go… The song ‘Pick Pocket’ stemmed from a conversation I had with a Capetonian who suggested I tuck my chains and watch out for pick pockets on the street – this became an ongoing thing with friends and others reminding me of the criminal activity that goes down and the risk of being a pickpocket victim. I’ve lived in Iraq for two years – so a man that could look me in my eye and stick his hands in my pocket is the least of all my fears”.

“I knew from the first 5 minutes that this kid was the truth… RVRW is much more of a producer than just a beatmaker… I’m looking forward to making a lot more music with RVRW in the future”.

‘Pick Pocket’ will be released on 30th November on iTunes, Beatport and other retail and streaming services.

Drumcode Total at Berghain: In Review

Sunday raving is something I’ll have to get used to living here in Berlin. Upon seeing that Nicole Moudaber wasn’t on until 9am, I knew going out on Saturday night wasn’t an option. So after a solid breakfast and a few morning beers, I hopped on the train and arrived at Berghain on an unusually sunny Sunday afternoon to set out for a day of serious clubbing. On the menu were some of the finest artists on the Drumcode roster, including Len Faki, Alan Fitzpatrick and the man himself, Adam Beyer.

Though admittedly, as I walked past the statue and up the stairs into Berghain’s dark and cavernous main room, Alan Fitzpatrick’s heavy, driving techno wasn’t quite what my head was ready for. Luckily, Berghain has one of the best second rooms in the world, and a space I think I’m beginning to enjoy more than it’s more famous downstairs neighbor: Panorama Bar.

Maybe 3 years of transcendental mornings in Amnesia’s hallowed and sun-drenched Terrace have left me yearning to recapture those moments in any way possible. And as the afternoon sunlight cast its soft glow through the shutters, beautifully silhouetting Goldwill (Henry Behring and Ralf Schmidt of Area) as smoke wafted around them, I instantly felt at home. Grabbing a beer, I hit the floor, as the two moved through a mix of upbeat classic cuts, sultry, stripped back house and trance-infused floor fillers like Sebastian Krieg Remix remix of “Shine” from Sezer Uysal – the shutters opening just as the arpeggios reached their crescendo for a truly spine tingling moment. That’s not to say it was all warm and fuzzy, as the duo bounced behind the decks with infectious energy, cutting into dub heavy tracks like “Trip” by Andre Kronert, a tune that would fit right in at a night out at Fuse London.

Downstairs, Alan Fitzpatrick was still going strong, and a packed dance floor was in full agreement with him. After pausing a moment at the top of the stairs to take in the site below me, I made my way into the dark mass of bodies which were heaving to tracks like Fitzpatrick’s summer Cocoon bomb, “Truant,” a decidedly dark and menacing tune that would set the tone for the remainder of the night. The exception came when suddenly Fitzpatrick blasted the room back in time with “The Age Of Love,” its angelic vocals floating out of the stacks and over the crowd. Eyes were closed, hands reached for the sky, and we let it all sink in before heading back into the fiery techno we’d all come for.

Up next was a DJ I’d been itching to see for some time, especially in his home territory at Berghain. The name Len Faki immediately conjures up thoughts of heavy, booming, stripped back techno, and without fail, he moved through slick, stomping, atmospheric sounds with a surgeon’s expertise. The energy in the room flowed through every crevice, and Faki himself seemed to be truly enjoying the experience, tapping away at his gear eliciting snaps and claps at just the right moments. Heads were down, fists were pumping, and with perfect pacing Faki drove to the deepest, darkest depths back up again, building with marvelously huge, snare-heavy crescendos causing the entire room to erupt in pleasure. Once it was about time for the main man to hit the decks, bodies poured into the dance floor from every direction, eager to see a whopping dose of Adam Beyer.

The towering Drumcode boss took control immediately, moving the night right along with fast paced fury. We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating what a huge year this has been for Beyer. He’s one of the few figures that, while having been one of the most respected artists in techno for some time, seems to have reached new heights in popularity recently, and for good reason. His Cocoon Ibiza sets (and in particular, his fabled Terrace blowout) cemented him as one of the party’s key residents there this summer, and his label continues to lead the charge as one of techno’s most important imprints. Though while his Amnesia appearances usually saw more swing to his groove, Beyer was all business at Berghain, stomping through cinematic sweeps and fist pumping numbers like his own forthcoming “Valium & LFOs” (out on Truesoul next month) and the Jel Ford remix of Alan Fitzpatrick’s “For An Endless Night” that kept the crowd whistling and dancing through the night. It was clear whom most had come to see, and the man of the hour delivered in full.

The ability to pack a club like Berghain, whose audience is arguably one of the most discerning out there, combined with the incredible reach and breath of the label’s fan base, is a clear example of why Drumcode and its boss Beyer are at the top of their game. The night’s guests rocked the crowd, and from morning to night the energy was on full, everyone prepared to go the distance with Beyer and company.
