Watch: This Is What A Real Deep House Party Looks and Sounds Like

$

Proof that real deep house is still alive and kicking. Check out My Love Is Underground’s footage of their party at the Rex Club, Paris.

The two minute after-movie from the My Love Is Underground party in Paris is full of flashing strobes, raucous crowd antics, a rotary mixer and heaps of vinyl. The video captures the electric atmosphere of the party perfectly as Jeremy Underground Paris, Brawther and SE62 spin the records and the MC proclaims, “Some said deep house was a thing from the past, but now look at y’all, the Rex Club is jam packed!”

French label My Love Is Underground has been a bastion of high quality underground house music in recent years. Run by Parisian record collector Jeremy Underground Paris, counting Brawther a key member of the crew, the label and its parties stand for old school values and true deep house – a million miles from what you see in the Beatport charts.

Steve Aoki Is Working on Deep House Tunes

Just when you thought things couldn't get worse for deep house, Dim Mak boss Steve Aoki revealed he's now stepping into the genre, albeit under an alias.

In a recent interview, the EDM star revealed plans for heading into a deeper direction. The inspiration came after a Cafe Mambo set where he played tracks from the likes of Duke Dumont, Ten Walls and Maceo Plex. Though as not to confuse fans of his electro sound, he'll produce under an alias.

"I want it to be judged on its own merits. We'll see how it does," he said.

However, this doesn't mean the on stage antics are going anywhere.

"People expect it now," he said.

Rapid Fire with Generik

Tyson O’Brien aka Generik doesn’t have much downtime. Recently returned from the UK, the Melbourne DJ and producer has sprung straight into action, never letting the demons of jet-lag get the better of him. His first single ‘The Weekend’ has spent the last 3 weeks at the top of the ARIA dance chart, getting spins at nightclubs all over the country.

On top of that, his dance card is already full for the summer, with residencies at Ivy and upcoming showcases at Stereosonic. This doesn’t leave much time for rest and recovery, but judging by his #tourofcool diary, RnR isn’t really a big part of Generik’s life.

Catching a rare free moment, Pulse threw some questions Generik's way on his last whirlwind few months.

Have you been surprised at how well ‘The Weekend’ has been received? Yeah totally, all the support and love for this record has been amazing!

The Weekend’ has really put you on the map now as a producer and not just a DJ. Do you feel any pressure now about making a follow-up? Hahaha Yeah, actually a little but i’m not too worried. I’m just going to keep making music that i like and if other people dig it too then that’s a huge bonus!

You teamed up with Nicky Van She on ‘The Weekend’. How did you guys share song-writing responsibilities? Nicky has the voice of an angel so naturally I let him do his thing and sing the hell out of it!

Do you have more collaborations on the horizon? I’ve been hit up by a few people to do some records, so now its just a matter of finding some time to start them!

You’ve toured all over the world in the past 12 months. Has anywhere really stood out or surprised you? SXSW this year in Austin texas was awesome! So many Australians were there and all killing it!

You wrote us a pretty wild #tourofcooldiary entry earlier in the year. Has your routine changed much since then? Not in the slightest if anything its got crazier! i’m currently writing another diary entry for you guys I’ve just got to spell check it!

What is the one party not to be missed this summer? I’m lucky enough to be a resident at Marco Polo Sundays at the Ivy Pool, its always pumping!

How do you cure a hangover? There is no such thing as a cure. All you can do is push on!!!

Your good mate Calvin Harris is going to be in town for Stereosonic later this month. Will you be showing him around your favourite spots? Yeah for sure! I’ve got to get rid of this night club tan so i dare say some days at the beach are in order!

What does the future hold for Generik? More music, heaps of shows and maybe a wife and kids down the track lol!

Two Men Jailed for music piracy over Dancing Jesus website

$

0

Two men who ran the website Dancing Jesus, which distributed music illegally, have been jailed. The internet forum allowed users to post thousands of links to the website, potentially costing the music industry over £240 million.

Owner Kane Robinson, of North Shields, North Tyneside, was jailed for two years and eight months after more than 22, 500 links to 250,000 titles were made available.
Richard Graham of Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, was jailed for one year and nine months. He illegally distributed thousands of files on the website.

The director of the BPI’s Copyright Protection Unit, David Wood, said:

“Today’s sentencing sends a clear message to the operators and users of illegal music sites that online piracy is a criminal activity that will not be tolerated by law enforcement in the UK or overseas.

“Piracy – particularly pre-release – can make or break an artist’s career, and can determine whether a record label is able to invest in that crucial second or third album.

“In this day and age, with so many quality digital music services available, offering access to millions of tracks through free and premium tiers, there is no good reason to use pirate sites that give nothing back to artists and offer a sub-standard experience for consumers.

“Speaking as a music fan, it just doesn’t make sense to help criminals when you can support artists.”

Half Baked's 5 Defining Tracks From 5 Years

$

London's Half Baked parties have now been running for five years and they've welcomed many esteemed underground names such as Mike Huckaby, Thomas Melchior, Margaret Dygas and Delano Smith. Their 5th birthday party at Studio 338 on November 29th is fast approaching, so the guys behind Half Baked have presented us with five tracks which have come to define their Sunday afternoon parties over their 5-year existence.

1. Jodeci – Freakin’ You (MK dub)

This track is one of Greg Brockmann's all-time favourites, one of our faithful residents. Back at the very first Half Baked in The Arches at Old Street he played it and I will never forget witnessing the sight of the entire crowd jumping up and down.

2. Wbeeza - A116

Taking us back to where it all began once again is ‘A116’ from Wbeeza. I’ll never forget when another one of our longtime residents Robin Ordell played this Half Baked favourite once again at our very first home, The Arches.

3. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy (Kamouflage Loves Fred Remix)

Hold Youth (Le Loup and Seuil) played the reworking of this iconic track in Paris around three years ago for our incredible Half Baked label showcase at Concrete with Sammy Dee, San Proper and Cabanne. Understandably people went completely mental about it, and yes that includes myself – very good memories of this moment!

4. Hold Youth - 'Casquette'

This is a special one from our own Half Baked label that we’ve been playing on Sunday daytime sessions since 2012 and it‘s given us some very good memories. Sunny days, nice crowd – happy days.

5. Mike Shannon - HB 006 - '5 years of Love'

This is the new EP from Half Baked with Mike Shannon which will be out at the end of November and has already been picked up by Ricardo Villalobos, Raresh, Daniel Bell and many more. We’ll be celebrating this release and our fifth birthday at Studio 338 on November 29th which will undoubtedly create yet more memorable moments.

The final release of tickets for Half Baked’s fifth birthday at Studio 388 can be picked up here.

YouTube has been developing a model which would still allow free use, but one which would also allow extensive access to more music for paying subscribers.

Little news of YouTube’s service has been announced, but it is expected that it will include the ability to save videos offline and high quality audio will be a feature.

Redinho’s Top 5 Tips For P-Funk Production

Redinho is Tom Calvert, the up-and-coming London producer who just dropped his self-titled debut album on the Numbers imprint (stream in full here). Tapped as a "fiendishly funky record", Calvert's debut LP takes styles like P-Funk and G-Funk and gives them a modern electronic twist.

Here Redinho shares with us his top five tips for producing P-funk.

 photo blackline2_zps37b5f386.jpg

Vocals

If you have lyrics, make sure they make no sense. Talk about the cosmos, how funky you are and the birds and the bees. Preferably get a nutter like George Clinton to do James Brown style outbursts and streams of consciousness.

Instrumentation

Synth bass riffs, massive handclaps on the back beats, twangy guitar, pepper with dorky synth bubbles.

Tempo

80-115bpm…Anything from a head nod to a borderline house groove. Stiffs should feel uncomfortable at the dance.

Rhythm-centric

Forget about chords and stay on a groove for years. This will clear out the jazzers and snobs.
