'What Is A Rave?': Judge Judy Is Confused About Electric Daisy Carnival And EDM

0
0

To be perfectly honest when we came across this clip we were surprised that Judge Judy was still on the air. We can't recall watching an episode since back in '98 when we chucked a sickie from school and ended up watching daytime TV all day. But wouldn't you know it, the grumpy old Jewish Judge is still going on 18 years strong and discovering all about what the kids are into these days.

In this video Justice Sheindlin first comes into contact with the word "rave" -  a term which appears to be so foreign to her that she scrunches up her face and asks, "What's a rave?". When it's explained to her that a rave is a music festival, she retorts, "Oh, a party, right? A party." Yes Judy, a party. But probably not like one you've ever been to before, love.

Check it out below, it's TV gold.

Felix Cartal (Canada) And Congorok (Italy, USA) Tour Africa

Felix Cartal (Canada) And Congorock (Italy, USA) Tour Africa

0

Felix Cartal and Congorock are set to tour Africa in November. After two stops in the Middle East, these giants will be in Nairobi, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

Felix Cartal is a huge pop house producer, known for several explosive tracks such as the recent ‘Let It Go’ Feat. Lily Elise, ‘Ready For Love’ Feat. Chloe Angelides, and ‘Young Love’ Feat. Koko LaRoo. His sound is one of beautiful, epic melodies with dance groove factor.

Cartal works closely with great singers to write and produce tracks. He’s often been compared to the likes of Calvin Harris and has been playing at some of the biggest festivals this year. ‘Ready for Love’ and ‘Young Love’ have received almost 2 million plays in the last year.

Congorock is an established and respected producer whose crazy body shaking track ‘Babylon’ has been remixed and supported by the likes of Steve Angello, Axwell and David Guetta. He was Rihanna’s support for her 777 tour and along with Rihanna has remixed tracks for Swedish House Mafia, Bloody Beetroots and Laidback Luke.

Congorock’s fast, funky, fresh and freaky sound is the perfect complement to Felix Cartal’s more nostalgic sound and I think these shows are going to be massive.

Tour dates are as follows:

22nd November: Nairobi
28th November: Cape Town
29th November: Durban & Johannesburg    Check back with us for more details soon.

Hard Day of the Dead Must See Acts

0
0

The anticipation is building with HARD’s annual Los Angeles party nearly upon us. Hard Day of the Dead is the Halloween party of LA, taking in everyone from mainstage stars Pete Tong and Knife Party, to HARD regulars RL Grime and GTA. The sister event to HARD Summer, DOTD may very well be Gary Richards’ flagship festival. Growing steadily, HARD has made a quick name for themselves in the ever growing dance music scene in America, hosting their first party back in 2007 right here in Downtown LA and quickly taking things nationally from New York to Miami and more.

RL Grime has his own curated VOID Stage this year. The roster is impressive, including Cashmere Cat, Rustie, Sophie, Branchez, Ape Drums, Tommy Kruise, Nina Las Vegas, Djemba Djemba, Wedidit and CAM’RON. The lineup is epic and luckily for us HARD knows a thing or two and curates a damn good schedule to help make the decisions of who to see a little easier and provides an all around amazing party for us to get lost at.

Hard Day of the Dead’s main focal point is also one of the coolest stage productions we have ever seen. This year’s main stage, designed to look like a Mayan Pyramid, is just as eerie as it is impressive. Throw Knife Party into the mix and you’ve got something truly menacing. Check the official full lineup and our top five pics below.

Jamie Jones– Pink Stage Saturday @ 9:45pm
The Hot Creations label head has had a huge few years, and spent the summer keeping Ibiza’s DC10 moving with his own brand of sunshine tech-house. As one of the most talented producers in techno today, Jamie Jones has defined his own sound and style, a soulful yet hard hitting groove.

Danny Daze – HARDer Stage Saturday @ 5:50
Danny Daze is going to be blowing up the sun-soaked festival with his own brand of dark, seedy techno. With over 30 releases to his name for labels such as Hot Creations, Nervous Records, Slow Roast, Plant Music and many others, he's become a young veteran of the US house and techno scene.

Australian producer/DJ Anna Lunoe is crushing that rubbery, throwback bass house sound at the moment and is one of the artists to check out this year.

Claude VonStroke – Purple Stage Sunday @ 9:45pm
Dirtybird co-founder Claude VonStroke is on vintage form at the moment, and is someone you should absolutely skip Calvin Harris and Bassnectar for. Only worth coming to see if you're prepared to get sweaty and nasty.

Booka Shade– 7UP Green Stage Sunday @ 8:40pm
German legends Booka Shade are well-known for their superb live performances so if you’re a aspiring dance head make sure you catch them for a vigorous lesson in the joys of the old school. Thanks to massive underground hits like ‘Mandarine Girl’, Booka Shade already have a serious cult following in clubland, where, uniquely, you’ll find their tunes being spun by DJs as diverse as Tiesto and Richie Hawtin, everywhere from Manchester’s Warehouse Project to Berlin’s Watergate.

Time Warp: Papa Sven Turns 50: In Review

0
0

Ten thousand people flocked to the iconic Time Warp main stage in Mannheim, Germany to celebrate Sven Vath’s 50th birthday. The Time Warp organisers produced and presented the living legend’s bash, with Luciano, Richie Hawtin, DJ Koze, Alex Azary and the birthday man himself all playing sets until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Following an intimate dinner and private concert by Nils Frahm, for close friends and family, Sven took to the stage just before midnight during an impressive set by DJ Koze. At the stroke of midnight, ten thousand voices sang “Happy Birthday” to a wide-smiled and teary Sven, before visual fireworks on the surrounding screens dotted above the crowd signaled the beginning of Koze’s resume.

Playing an emotive set, memorable tracks such as “From Nowhere (Âme Remix)” by Dan Croll established the emotional tone for Sven’s opening speech, that followed Koze’s finish at 1am.

With proud mother by his side, Sven introduced the pre-recorded 20-minute video speech – a memoir, detailing intimate details of his journey to becoming one of the world’s most respected DJs, sharing rare photos from his past. After thanking those important to him, least forgetting the support and love from his fans, Sven took to the decks as a mighty “are you ready?” bellowed over the crowd. In other words, "let the party of all parties begin".

“On the night a few musical highlights from the last twenty years will be on the decks”, Sven had mentioned back at his pre-birthday bash in Ibiza, where he played an extended set at Beachouse. He didn’t disappoint. Classics such as “Knights of the Jaguar” by DJ Rolando, “The Push” by Paul Jackson and current Sven favourite “Epikur” by David August had the crowd in fits of pins and needles with the amount of time their hands were up in the air. As expected, even Sven’s now infamous 'Electric Salsa' gained playtime.

In true Sven style which has set him apart from most mainstream DJs, all tracks played were on vinyl and using minimal mixer effects. “Vinyl is THE medium for everybody who sets high values on good sound”, he had famously said in an interview for his own label Cocoon Recordings.

It was a real time warp as the clocks went back an hour at 3am, giving ravers another hour of music and dancing. Luciano then took control and picked up the pace with his tribal rhythms playing an energetic set that had the dancers (and pyrotechnics) in a frenzy.

Large handwritten signs stretched across the dance floor reading, “You gave us music”, and flags with “Papa Sven” showed just how much love was being thrown around. It was evident Sven was having quite the ball. After a few crowd surfs, and a lengthy solo dance above the turntables during Richie Hawtin’s set, he was joined by the techno samurai who gave a short emotional speech.

If there were any rumours of animosity between Luciano, Richie and Sven they were all thoroughly blown away with the constant amount of public displays of friendship between all DJs. Personal jokes between Sven and Richie about each other’s music were constantly being thrown around the booth in good-natured banter.

Despite being taken off an hour early by a progressively enthusiastic Sven, Richie’s set was an emotional journey full of deep, heart-clutching bass lines and climaxes. Undeniably one of his best in a long time many had agreed.

A curtain call of glitter ended the birthday party, yet there was no time wasted as Sven announced the location for the after party at Zimmer Club, the usual haunt for all of Time Warp after parties, where he continued to play on to a packed dance floor until the early evening.

Marking almost 33 years behind the decks, Sven Vath has truly cemented his place in techno history. A father to not just his two children, but techno music, an inspiration to those both younger and older than him, the age 50 will seldom slow down Vath who also celebrated his 15th year in residency in Ibiza this year. Thank you Sven for the music, the good times, and one hell of a party.

Hello Beautiful Set To Release First Album On Tuesday

0
0

Hello Beautiful is preparing to release his first album on Tuesday to a quickly growing throng of synth fans. Matthieu Auriacombe is a producer from Cape Town who makes ‘electronic indie music’ …’it’s dancey and it’s catchy. It’s pretty much a party’.

Known previously for his role as bassist for Beach Party and Kidofdoom, his ongoing love for drum ‘n bass and synths led him to the Hello Beautiful project, which saw the release of his first solo EP ‘Supernova Love’ this time last year. In appreciation of support in recent months he has just made the EP available for free download.

The EP features some of the most talented vocalists and musicians in the South African indie scene, including Laudo Liebenberg from Aking, Peach van Pletzen from Yesterday’s Pupil and Bittereinder, Wim Jansen van Rensburg from Pity the Fool, Danielle Hitchcock and David Gabriel Thorpe. We are hoping to see some more interesting collaborations in the forthcoming album.

Hello Beautiful has already been plenty busy playing gigs around the country, and has a lot planned including some Halloween gigs this weekend (he’ll be playing at Arcade Empire, Pretoria on Friday 31 October and an Untamed Youth party at Kitchener’s on Saturday 1 November).

Check back with us next week for the album and reviews.

Dosem: 'Inspired By Urban Life'

0
0

Spanish house and techno producer Dosem has been slowly building his reputation in underground music for a number of years. The sound of his productions has often occupied the ground between tough and accessible techno, but his new album, ‘City Cuts’, sees him pushing towards a more house oriented sound. We caught up with the Spaniard so he could tell us more.

Your new album ‘City Cuts’ will be released soon. Can you tell us about the making of the album? I began to work on this Project two years ago, during the last album tour around several cities. Through these trips I had the opportunity of meeting a lot of amazing people and living some experiences that inspired this story. All this talks about urban life, how social interaction works and contrasts happen in big cities walking through the streets.

What was your studio set-up like? During the whole production process I just used my laptop, where I put every idea to work after.

You’ve spoken previously about how you would like to use live instrumentation in an album, did this come to fruition on ‘City Cuts’? There are a lot of samples which belong to real instruments, but they are treated digitally. There are also a few drum sounds that came from real samples.

The album is inspired by urban life. How does the influence of urban life manifest itself in the music? Urban life has a lot of things, but the most important thing that I was interested in are the human interactions. Walking through different streets of big cities such as Tokyo or Hong Kong, you are able to see a lot of your own echoes from your memories. Sometimes, I stayed a few days in these cities to meet people and hang out around the places. All this showed me huge inspiration, so I needed to explain every moment without words.

‘City Cuts’ is your third album – how does ‘City Cuts’ compare to your other LPs, ‘Parallel’ and ‘Origin’? It’s a little bit more focused on house and less aggressive, but still has all these elements that I like to include in my productions : energy, melody and rhythm, with a lot of groove and a funky touch . I think it sounds more organic.

Your previous albums were released on Sino and Tronic, respectively, what was the decision behind releasing on Suara this time? How did the relationship with Suara begin? I started to work with them long time ago and I have a very good relationship with Coyu and some of the artists that publish a lot of releases on his label. One of the main reasons to release the album on Suara was the chance to make something with a different sound, one which was much more eclectic.

The new album has more of a house sound rather than techno, why is this? Yes, this is true. All my stuff is a mix of both genres, but this time I decided I would do something more house oriented, with urban sounds. I wanted to explore new creative challenges and step out of the comfort zone. I try to make the kind of music that I would like to dance to in a club.

Was there a main source of inspiration for the album? It was inspired by urban life and those scenes that are repeated in all the cities I've had the opportunity to visit such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam. It’s about connecting with people from different cultures, but sharing very similar feelings and collecting many of these experiences I have had in these past two years.

The tracks ‘Lost Taxi’ and ‘No Past’ seem to ambient and break beat touches, are these types of music you often listen to? I listen to all kinds of music. In fact, I also produce many songs with those elements that haven't been released yet. When I make an álbum, it’s an excellent opportunity to include some of these productions.

What’s next for you? I'm working on remixes for Mark Fanciulli, Umek, Chus & Ceballos, Robert Babicz and Uto Karem.

SoundCloud Has Reached Critical Mass

0
0

Like many digital start-ups, SoundCloud -- the world’s largest audio-streaming service -- built a seamless user experience before figuring out how to make money with it. Now the Berlin-based company is deep in negotiations for licensing deals to monetize its audience and climb out of its financial hole.

From 2010 through 2013, revenues grew 723 percent to 14.4 million while the net loss rose 1,373 percent to 29.6 million, according to SoundCloud financial statements filed with Companies House in the United Kingdom, where the company is registered.

Like YouTube before it, SoundCloud has reached critical mass -- currently it boasts 350 million monthly users -- without licensing deals. Its business model calls for users to upload content for promotional purposes, meaning the company was not required to pay royalties. (Its small amount of revenue comes from hosting fees.) YouTube's advertising sales prompted a 2007 lawsuit by the National Music Publishers Association and other groups, which was settled in 2011.

In contrast, SoundCloud has avoided legal action because it hasn't sold advertising. "We may still look to sue them, but we're in a conversation and looking for a win-win situation," says David Israelite, president and chief executive of the NMPA. (Negotiations with major labels broke down in September but are ongoing.)

But SoundCloud needs to monetize its substantial traffic to stay afloat. To that end, in August the company launched On SoundCloud, a partner program that pays creators for ad-supported streams in the United States. It also brought aboard key executives to transition to a licensed service: Jeff Toig, former general manager of Muve Music, as chief business officer, and former Warner Music Group digital executive Stephen Bryan as vp of business development.

Today, Thump reported SoundCloud has just begun rolling out advertising and after all the chatter about what the Company’s business plans will incorporate, this may be the first drops of the oncoming deluge. Pop-up audio ads are now interrupting listening, requiring you to listen to the ad before the actual track can begin, similar to YouTube. Although, these ad's are not appearing on all SoundCloud posts, only certain tracks from labels that are presumed to have entered in to early advertising agreements with the streaming site.

Uner (Spain) and Pet Shop Boys (UK) Join Bloody Beetroots And More At Sonar South Africa

Spanish house, techno and harmonic-vocal DJ and producer Uner will deliver a powerful set to fans at Sonar South Africa. He is added today to the acts already announced, and so is UK 3-decade sensation Pet Shop Boys. They will join an impressive lineup including The Bloody Beetroots (Live), Jon Hopkins, Ten Walls, UZ and a host of South Africa’s finest local talent.

Uner's musical training allowed him to develop at a very early age a different dance music concept, based on the pleasure for harmony and the search for a unique, personal sound. He has edited for Diynamic (among many more), and earned the respect of the music industry with talent and work: names like Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox or Luciano play his music on a regular basis; clubs like Berlin's Watergate or Space ibiza book him oftenly and his number of fans increases by the day.

We particularly love this video for the boy jiving at the back:

Pet Shop Boys, arguably one of the most successful UK pop duos, have a massive local fan base and have sold over 300,000 albums in South Africa alone. In Cape Town and Johannesburg fans can expect to hear songs from across their entire career including global chart-toppers like ‘West End Girls’, ‘It’s a Sin’ and ‘Always on My Mind’, songs from their recent acclaimed Stuart Price-produced album 'Electric', and classics like "Suburbia" and "Go West”.
