Art Department and Seth Troxler drop ‘Cruel Intentions’

0
0

Art Department is about to launch their new album and have just released the first track off 'Natural Selection' today - 'Cruel Intentions' featuring Seth Troxler. Billboard caught up with the duo to chat about their new album, partying in Ibiza and what it was like collaborating with Troxler.

Since joining forces as Art Department in 2009, veteran Toronto producers and DJs Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White have emerged as a true double threat. From enthralling fans with their trippy blend of deeper house and techno in marathon DJ sets across the globe to exploring more experimental fare on releases like 2011's The Drawing Board, after three years Art Department is set to release their 14-track follow-up Natural Selection Nov. 18 on White's No. 19 Music imprint. Natural Selection is available for pre-order now here.

At this point in their career, White says the duo is in a strange place where the music they play live is not reflective of the music they create. "Aside from our first year, when we were touring and playing all our own music because it was all dance music, I don't think too much about trying to work our music into our sets," he says. "We play what the moment is asking for. You're going to lose something when you're forcing your own record into a set and it doesn't necessarily fit."

How did the collaboration with Seth Troxler on "Cruel Intentions" come together? It was something we wanted to do to play homage to first album. Seth was a big part of the start of the project by being on the first single "Without You/Vampire Nightclub." That collaboration was pretty exciting at that time and helped get the project off the ground. When we were writing the new album, we knew we wanted him to be a part of something. We sent him some bits, and it took a couple months. We didn't hear anything because we were both busy on tour. Then one morning, I just got an email from him with this vocal he had laid down. It was a really awkward time of night, like first thing in the morning, so I don't know what had been going on or had inspired it, but the lyrics are amazing. The whole thing is hilarious. It comes about really naturally. Anyone that we collaborate with is always a friend, it's not like managers putting something together for us. It's just us working with our crew.

Monty The Fly - Free Three Ways

Monty The Fly
Free Three Ways EP
Nothing Odd

9.0/10.0

If you happened to check in with the inaugural release from Nothing Odd Recordings, then you’ll no doubt already be aware of the label’s modus operandi. In short, it’s house music, but it’s house music of a twisted and dark variety; the type that's been produced to provoke your senses and send you into a state of deeper thought. On their latest, the label continues their most auspicious start to life courtesy of label owner Sam Smith aka Monty The Fly. The 'Free Three Ways' EP sees him take the reins for a seriously eclectic and unusual offering whereby each track retains its own unusual flavour. What's more, it's one that leaves a telling impression too.

The action kicks off with ‘Cocopox’, an almost minimal offering that basks in only a few parts. Regardless, it’s expertly put together, and the moody vibes are offset by various other sinister tidbits that linger throughout. ‘ABV’ is a warmer track that goes down further ghoulish alleys, with an experimental, Matthew Herbert-esque vibe about it. While it’s hardly peak-time fodder, it captivates in a more subtle and discerning method. Culminating effort ‘Ahradic’ is the pick of the litter. A zippy and wonderful effort, it glides with a real ease, gradually unfurling into a groover of some proportions. There’s plenty that’s odd about this release – but we gather that’s exactly what the man behind the music was going for.

Tracklist:
1. ABV
2. Ahradic
3. Cocopox

Huxley: 'It's Like An Anthology'

0
0

Huxley has been an ever-present figure on the house scene over the past few years, largely thanks to a string of lauded releases on some of the most highly regarded imprints in the game, such as Tsuba Records, Hypercolour, 20:20 Vision and Morris/Audio. His latest offering, coming on Will Saul’s imprint AUS Music, is the full length LP, ‘Blurred’. The album sees the producer exploring a wealth of influences, sounds and genres and we caught up with Huxley to discuss the album – taking in major label deals, drum & bass, Roger Sanchez and more.

You’ve released on AUS a couple of times already – what was the reason behind deciding to release the album on AUS as well? The main reason is because I originally decided to maybe go down the major label route and I eventually decided against that after I finished. I finished one album, didn’t like it and basically remade a completely new one. I’ve got such a good working relationship with Will [Saul] that I showed him the tracks and he was really into it. It all went from there really. I think that AUS was a nice place to do it. They gave the right constructive criticism, but at the same time allowed me to do what I wanted to do.

So did you already have something sorted with a major label or was that what you were aiming for with the first attempt at the album? Well we had a few things in the works, but it just turned out that that wasn’t the way I wanted to go in the end, basically. It was actually nothing to do with the deal or anything. It was just that I wanted a bit more freedom with what I wanted to make. I think if I’d done that I would’ve made quite a different album.

I suppose there would have to be more of a pop element if you went down the major label route. I think so. I think it would need to tick certain boxes, which maybe some people say it does anyway to an extent, but yeah, I didn’t really feel like doing that at this point in my career.

After you scrapped the first one, when did you start making ‘Blurred’? Well, it was all kind of an ongoing process, I took one or two demoes from that and scrapped the rest of them. I made the new album from about January to August this year. It came together quite quickly really.

Did you have a general idea with where you wanted to go with it? Not really, I just sat down and started making music and it sort of went in the way that it went really. I think that’s half the reason I thought I was ready to do an album because before I was forcing it a bit too much and trying to come up with these specific tracks that I thought an album needed. Whereas now, I’m a bit older and a bit wiser and I realised you can make an album your own, you don’t have to stick to certain rules. That’s kind of why I didn’t really have a plan in my head. It was just better to go with it.

Even with the first four tracks you’ve covered house, garage, breaks and drum & bass. Yeah, I used to make a lot of genres so it’s nice to get back into sitting down and writing music again, rather than sitting down and worrying about who’s going to play it and where it’s going to get played.

Doing an album, did you feel like you have the platform to explore other influences? I think before I was a bit scared to do something different. Now I’m in a different place, I’ve allowed myself to do it again and maybe my future EPs will be a bit more varied than perhaps they have been in the past. I’m already thinking about doing another album. Not for a long time, but kind of thinking about what I want to progress onto. I think that’s what I’ll save those kinds of tracks for.

Are the sounds on the album all general influences you’ve had over the years? Yeah, basically. The breaks and garage are things I’ve always listened to and played. The drum & bass thing is what I originally started out on when I was like 15 - that’s what I was playing. I actually wrote a couple of other drum & bass tracks, but I think the one on the album was the strongest one. I felt almost nostalgic and it’s like an anthology of what I’ve been into up until now.

You can tell more of a story with an album. I think so and I didn’t want to make an album of 12 house bangers. For me I’d find it quite boring. I think a lot of people do it and there are certain people who can get away with it, but on the whole I think an album is there to explore other areas or creativity. You can show you’re an artist again and not just a producer or a DJ.

A few years ago you said you'd stopped listening to as much house music and you were listening to more garage – would you say that’s still true now? I would say that’s not true at all and that it’s probably gone the other way now. I listen to more house and techno than I do garage. People have told me there are still garage elements to the album, which I know there are – it’s not that I'm trying to get away from it, but I feel quite restricted if a journalist, or anyone, classes me as just a garage producer because I don’t think that’s really true.

When people threw the ‘garage revival’ tag around a few years ago, I never quite understood it, it always seemed like your music had more house elements to it. Yeah, I agree with that completely. I think it’s just an easy way of grouping people and pigeonholing people. There are obviously garage elements in a lot of this music, but if you think about it back in the day it was always called house and garage anyway, it was always one thing.

There are a few collaborations on the album as well. There’s one with Roger Sanchez – how did that work out? He came to us and wanted to get in touch with me and we just started talking. I passed him some parts of a track that I was working on and he did his thing in the studio back in New York. In the summer we hooked up a few times and played back-to-back at Pacha and I went to his place and we went through some music. We were already working on the next project, which is some music for him actually, which I’m working on right now. He’s such a nice guy and so easy to work with, that I think that it’s definitely a route that I’ll continue to go down for a while. He’s so easy to work with.

You’ve had some guest vocalists as well – how did they fit into the album process? Well for Yasmin, it started off as a bootleg actually, which had a Nate Dogg vocal on it – it was only ever meant for me to just play out. It got such a good reaction that I decided to send it over to Yas to see what she thought. It was actually in a pack of four and she picked that one out. She wrote it and it kind of worked out like that. With all the vocalists for this album, I wrote the track and sent it to them and they send what they had back, basically.

'Blurred' is out now on AUS Music. Purchase the album on iTunes here.

Watch: Tiga Drops Typically Weird Video For 'Bugatti'

0
0

How do you make a video for one of the biggest tracks of the year and do it justice? Well if you're someone like Tiga, who has a penchant for the weird, then you naturally make it just as bizarre as the track itself.

We're of course talking about 'Bugatti', which has been given the video treatment in pure Tiga style, ie; a highly stylistic and imagery rich journey into the bizzaro. Expect a montage of abstract 80s scenarios like hedonistic après skiing and desk-based S&M (naturally) combined with Tiga's own oddball wit.

'Bugatti' comes off the back of several recent collaborations with Matthew Dear, who has been the Turbo head honcho's production partner-in-crime on his long-awaited new artist album, which is slated for a 2015 release. A follow up to 2009's 'Ciao', Tiga's new LP will be accompanied by a new live show featuring full production trimmings.

Has Vestax Gone Under?

0
0

Speculation is rife that a popular music manufacturer has ceased operations. Teikoku News Online, a Japanese news organization has reported Vestax Co. Ltd ceased operations on August 31. While nothing has been confirmed by the company, all the evidence appears to be pointing in one direction.

Speculation was originally reported in DJ Tech Tools“Vestax has been silent on social media since July; the company hasn't released any new products in the last 12 months, and did not even appear at BPM 2014 in Birmingham”. The new Vestax “To The Core” store also shut down at the end of August, and their primary US distributor American Music & Sound dropped them earlier in 2014.

Vestax has been struggling to keep up with the competition in recent years. A drop in the value of the yen has made it difficult for the company to match lower cost controllers from the likes of Pioneer and Reloop. This, combined with an overall downturn in Japanese manufacturing may have forced Vestax out of business.

Free Music: Justin Jay Remixes D4L's 'Laffy Taffy'

0

In honor of Halloween and dirtybird’s 10-year anniversary, the label’s rising star, Justin Jay, has remixed D4L’s classic ’05 tune, “Laffy Taffy”, and is giving it away for free because he is awesome. The track is the perfect mix of drum machine sounds, 808 bass, and goofiness to be a dirtybird creation.

Claude VonStroke’s dirtybird imprint has been dropping bopping basslines and making people smile since January 2005. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade and Justin Jay feels the same, "[I] can't believe the label's been doing its thing for 10-years. I wish I'd been in on it since I was 11, but I was getting down to jams like this at the time so I can't really complain. With Halloween coming up, this just had to happen..."

Sit back, relax and let this little take you back to that middle school dance.

Top 10 Los Angeles Halloween Parties

0
0

In a week Halloween will be upon us! And with it, a gaggle of dressed up party goers, lunatics and most importantly, more parties than you can poke your cheap, plastic broomstick at. Los Angeles, the world capital of the most wierd and freaky Halloween parties is about to play host to the world's best DJs and live acts all weekend long. Here's the Pulse Radio list of the top 10 parties that you need to get amongst.

 photo blackline2_zps37b5f386.jpg

RBMA x A CLUB CALLED RHONDA
Although it's technically a week away from Halloween, we thought this was just too good not to have in the list and considering that most people in LA like to extend their festivities as much as possible, it's quite fitting. The always flamboyant 'A Club Called Rhonda' have teamed up with RBMA to bring a lineup as exuberant as Rhonda herself. Fresh from stellar seasons in Ibiza, Seth Troxler and Guy Gerber headline the party and are backed up by 'Running Back' boss and all round House legend, Gerd Janson. With that lineup, a secret TBA location and Red Bull and Rhonda overseeing things, what else really needs to be said? The only catch, it's not open to the public so you'll have to RSVP and hope for the best.

On the road to ESCAPE: ALL HALLOWS EVE
If super clubs and bottle service are more your thing, Exchange LA are hosting a pre-party to the Halloween weekend festival, ESCAPE: ALL HALLOWS EVE. The party will featureEnter.resident and Minus affiliate, Paco Osuna in the Headline spot with special guests Apollonia backing him up. Apollonia were responsible for two of Pulse's 'Biggest Moments Of Ibiza', so the French trio alone are worth the trouble that sometimes comes with dealing with huge clubs and the bottle service mindset that comes with them.

 photo paco_zps96d87f08.jpg

Ben Frost pres. A U R O R A
Undoubtably the most experimental, and sonically brutal, party on this list, Ben Frost pres A U R O R A will go hand in hand with the dark undertones that come with Halloween. Anyone that has seen Ben Frost before, or has even heard one of his albums, will know that this is not for the faint of heart. Backed up by fellow experimental composers, Tim Hecker and Pete Swanson, this should prove to be an otherworldly and rewarding journey into the nether-regions of electronic music.

Sound Nightclub presents Lee Burridge
Hollywood isn't normally known for it's great taste in electronic music, but less than a block from the Hollywood strip sits Sound Nightclub. Regularly featuring some of House and Techno's biggest names, Sound is without a doubt one of the best clubs in Los Angeles. For one of their Halloween nights, they've pulled in Lee Burridge for a wonky and weird set that will prove perfect for the vibe of the weekend. HOJ, who is a regular at Lee's 'All Day I Dream' parties, will be on back up duties for the night.

 photo lee-burridge-hoj-1_zps6fc6d5fc.jpg

ENTER.LA at ESCAPE: ALL HALLOWS EVE
Running across Friday Oct 31 and Saturday Nov 1st, Richie Hawtin will be bringing his sleek, Ibiza based, Enter. party to Los Angeles as part of Escape: All Hallows Eve. The party will feature the who's who of House and Techno, including Loco Dice, The Martinez Brothers, Art Department, Apollonia, Tale Of Us and Recondite, among others. It is part of a rather large festival though, so you'll have to be ready to deal with the typically trashy crowd that attend these events.

 photo ENTER-LA_zps15c5f492.jpg

Frightwork presents Cirez D
Sound Nightclub have pulled in Eric Prydz's alter ego, Cirez D for their main Halloween night. Hearing him in the quite intimate setting of Sound will be quite the treat. Fingers crossed the EDM crowd won't realise his past affiliation with Swedish House Mafia and the line won't extend half way up Hollywood Blvd.

Minimal Effort: A Supernature Halloween Showcase
Audiofly are throwing their first Supernature label showcase in Los Angeles on Halloween at the epic warehouse venue, Lot 613. The warehouse will be transformed into "a mystical, supernatural forest", complete with two huge stages, to ensure the dreamiest of Halloween parties. Featuring Supernature artists, LucaBacchetti, Droog, Dance Spirit (live) and a host of local LA talent, this one should be at the top of your list.

 photo supernature_zps7dc77535.jpg

Hard Day Of The Dead
This ones another large scale festival complete with every electronic genre under the sun. If you've got the guts to wade through the fields of slutty, school girl zombies and dawn of the dead jocks, you'll find some pretty bang on acts to sink your teeth into. Audion (live), Jamie Jones, Danny Daze, Eats Everything and Benoit and Sergio might just prove enough to get us there.

 photo dayofDead_zps6943f7a0.jpg

Avalon presents DEEP DISH
Celebrating Halloween dancing to Dubfire and Sharam back together as Deep Dish has solidified the inclsion of this thumping party. The boys will be laying down their signature house grooves at Avalon in Hollywood. So if you can make it past what is sure to be wild party in itself out on the street, once inside you'll be in for a night of relentless dancing!

Sublevel Mass-a-cure Costume Ball
Last but definitely not least we have an underground costume ball to round out proceedings. If pure, driving House music is your thing, you can't go past this. You've got Ellum Audio's Blakkat, California based Techno veteran John Tejada and the b2b pairing of DJ Sneak and Doc Martin. Honestly, what more do you want?

Detroit’s Mike Huckaby has announced Australian sideshows, which includes a set at the upcoming Bad Apple party in Sydney. Having already been announced for NSW's Subsonic Festival, the US DJ will extend his stay down under, with extra club nights included on his tour.

Huckaby gained recognition via his legendary Record Time store. His knowledge of electronic music and culture is rivaled by few, thanks to the decades he has spent on the scene. Now working across two labels (Deep Transportation and SYNTH), the veteran tastemaker is going back to what he loves: playing records.

The iconic producer has been especially prolific of late, remixing everyone from Deepchord to Loco Dice. With some new gear in his record bag, expect some fresh cuts from this legend of the game.

Huckaby will play Bad Apple at the Burdekin in Sydney, along with his own showcases at Sub Sonic and venues to be announced in Melbourne and Auckland. Joining him at Bad Apple will be Act (Clocked London/Twelve), James Fazzolari (Bare Essentials), Dave Stuart (Something Else), Daniel (Braille), B_A and Aboutjack.

Ex-Porn Star Cum DJ Sasha Grey Is Touring Australia

Hold onto your...hat? Once female porn star now EDM DJ, Sasha Grey, is heading to Australia this December.

Grey swapped porn for music back in 2011 when she joined the death-dub outfit aTelecine - which had some degree of underground success playing Poland's Unsound festival in 2012 alongside the likes of Shackleton, Ben Frost, Kuedo and Cooly G. She then left the experimental scene behind to focus on becoming a DJ after quitting the band in July last year.

Grey's 'Here I Am Tour' kicks off in Manila on November 14th before hitting India and Indonesia, then arrives in Australia just in time for summer, with shows locked down in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide across December.

If you're worried this might be another Paris Hilton scenario where someone is actually DJing for her, then you might want to check out the below video which shows that Grey is actually capable of pulling off a mix.

Regional Australia will welcome a brand new festival this summer, with the first ever Hooch Fest in Mandurah, WA (about 45 minutes outside of Perth).

The festival is the brainchild of Die High Records and Hooch, "a bunch of kids who got sick of the same old shit and aimed to bring something new and exciting to the club environment.”. The pair have previously hosted events all over WA, and are looking to step it up with their first major festival.

Hooch fest will showcase some of the most exciting young talents in electronica and dance. Headliners include Brooklyn’s Jubilee and Denver producer St’eLouse. In addition to the internationals, there will be plenty of home-grown talent on display including Golden Features, Basenji. Indian Summer, Sable and Lewi McKirdy.

It all goes down Saturday 6th December at Smart St Mall in Mandurah. Best of all, tickets are only $60!
