Luka, Soul Candi Producer, Defeats Grueling Recovery Through Music

0
0

Featured on one of Soul Candi’s most recent releases, Producers Series Vol.2, is the highly talented producer “Luka”. Known for his unique and innovative musical creations, the way in which Luka found music production is truly inspiring.

After suffering a rugby accident during his varsity years, Luka sustained serious injuries to his neck which resulted in paralysis. Instead of falling into depression and harping on the injustices of life, he faced this obstacle with a positive attitude and created a new path for himself. Passionate about music from a young age, it now became Luka’s motivation to continue his success. Close friends organised music production equipment for him when partial movement in his arms returned. Luka then took the time to thoroughly understand the equipment and soon started producing his own unique sounds. With still no movement in his fingers, he uses a pencil strapped to his arm to assist him in the production process.

His music was quickly picked up by various industry leaders and has now been shared across the globe, with his work reaching the UK, Italy, Russia, Switzerland and more. Soul Candi Records discovered him in 2013 and a year later they released his full album on Producers Series Vol.2 alongside the UK-based D-Mailce. Luka describes his sound as a fusion of lounge, nujazz, soulful, hip-hop, deep dub, techno, tribal, electro and electro-acoustic. He has also started his own house label, 'We Go Deep'. A wide spectrum of sounds from a man who has used his unique experience to alter his destiny and have a positive effect on the world.

Agwa Yacht Club 21 In Pictures

Well, well, well...what else can be said said about Agwa Yacht Club's first outing for the 2014/15 summer season except, "Wow".

A sold out Starship took to Sydney Harbour and sailed into a gorgeous spring day with Venezuelan duo Fur Coat taking care of grooves on the top deck. Then as the day became night the one and only Radio Slave showed Sydney why he is still one of the most in-demand DJs on the circuit.

Special mentions go out to Brother J, Mark Craven and The Franchi Brothers who all had sterling Agwa Yacht Club debuts, and of course it wouldn't be a boat party without resident DJs Co-Op and Alan Thomas.

Bring on Agwa 22 on December 20th - stay tuned to Pulse for the lineup coming soon!

CW/A - Conducting The Method EP

CW/A
Conducting The Method
Vakant

9/10

Initially beginning as a purely-live duo that started out playing material from their respective albums before specifically writing new music with an improvisational bent, CW/A, the collaboration between Clockwork and Avatism have now finally released some music lovers of experimental, freeform electronica and techno can enjoy anywhere, anytime.

‘Conducting The Method’ opens the EP with skittering beats, and loose, live, almost jazz-like percussion. These elements are later joined by a gritty, incessant TB-303 bassline and grainy, heavily reverbed chords reminiscent of an industrial nightmare. Yet, despite all its darkness and abrasiveness, ‘Conducting The Method’ manages to also be uplifting and thoughtful, creating a strange, but weirdly compelling contrast.

Things take a turn for the harder, crunchier and more dancefloor-focused with ‘Modern Conflict Theory’, a dirty peak time industrial techno monster. Distorted, minimalist percussion and a throbbing bassline keep the track rolling, but don’t get in the way of its pulsing, filtered stabs and degraded, gloomy chords that make an appearance to give the track just enough melody to keep it fresh without taking away from its tense, angst-filled atmosphere.

The final original track, ‘Sothis’ comes from way out of leftfield, demonstrating CW/A’s versatility. An up-tempo slice of moody broken beat goodness, ‘Sothis’ combines electro staples like a wobbly acid bassline, quirky effects and subtle chords with the chopped-up breaks and sense of playfulness of early 90’s hardcore rave tunes. Dead Heat offers up an excellent deep, stripped-back tech house interpretation of ‘Sothis’, taking the original’s bassline and laying it over rolling, mechanical drum rhythms to excellent effect. The chords from the original also make an appearance, joined by metallic clangs and eerie atmospherics, taking the moody feel of the original even further.

Tracklist:

A1 Conducting the Method
A2 Sothis
B1 Modern Conflict Theory
B2 Sothis (Dead Heat Remix)

Sydney Bands Mourn The Closure Of Kings Cross Club The Backroom

0
0

Earlier this week we broke the sad news that much loved Kings Cross nightspot The Backroom Sydney has closed it doors, which owner Raul Gonzales attributes directly to the controversial lockout laws Barry O'Farrell introduced seven months ago.

"Things haven’t been working for a while. Plain and simple, it is the lockout laws that have definitely affected our closing," venue owner Raul Gonzales told Pulse Radio. "When you have a business model that relies on late night trading and you’re not getting it, then its just not feasible to keep it running. The foot traffic in the Cross has dropped significantly."

The news was picked up by several media sites including music blog Stoney Roads, who tweeted the news to Fatty, ahem, Barry O'Farrell. Unexpectedly the former NSW premier responded with "Thx for letting me know. #notearsshed". Naturally his underhanded remark received a steady flow of negative responses from Sydney DJs.

Clearly what Barry O'Farrell fails to undertsand is the hugely negative impact the laws are having on the city's clubbing scene and the venues that are key to the industry's survival. Clubs like The Backroom Sydney are the lifeblood and creative hubs of dance music, and judging from the eulogies below from Sydney bands and acts Flight Facilities, RUFUS, Art Vs Science and Peking Duk, it will be sorely missed.

 photo FF_zps49fa5354.jpg

Hugo (Flight Facilities)

"Backroom was without a doubt one of my favourite parties. The venue itself was a seminal part of Kings Cross. You always knew someone there either in front or behind the bar. The difference in the lockout was apparent on it's first week in effect. It suffocated one of the better parties Sydney has had in a long time, and split up a familiar bunch of faces. For the amount of time I spent there, I never saw a fight, and never personally had a problem. The door policy was enough to keep the unwanted out. Now, a policy that should be directed at a lack of education has instead blamed alcohol and a suburb. The generational gap has highlighted how small an understanding the policy makers have for the NSW 18-30's. For this very reason, they've done amazing job at crushing our once thriving small businesses like Backroom."

 photo RUFUS_zps2ba31022.jpg

Jon George (RUFUS)

"This truly sucks. Another Sydney institution biting the dust on the back of mislead fears and laws. As a musician, work is always late, and the Backroom was our favourite place to be able to reconnect with old friends, or take new ones visiting from overseas, and make friends and fun memories over the years. Sad times in Sydney."

 photo ARTVSCIENCE_zps5bef1365.jpg

Jim Finn (Art Vs Science)

"Let's go for a fun night out with friends in Sydney. Oh wait, let's not, Sydney sucks now. After ruining Sydney's nightlife the half baked lockout laws are causing small businesses to shut down like iconic venue The Backroom. So long fun."

 photo pekingduk_zps0462f6e3.jpg

Adam Hyde (Peking Duk)

"These ignorant laws have done more worse than they have good for the people. Backroom was an institution. A place where you would go to have a good time after 1am and there was never a bad vibe in the air. Thanks to these lock out laws that very institution and many more have had to shut down their business. It isn't fair on the business owners, the punters and most importantly the spirit of Sydney's nightlife."

Fresh Blood: Tokyo Prose

0
0

Drum and bass up-and-comer Sam Reed, aka Tokyo Prose, steps up the Fresh Blood decks this week.

Originally kicking off as a duo in 1998, the Tokyo Prose ship is now steered solo by Sam Reed. His productions have helped shaped the sound of the Samurai label and have found their way into the record bags of DJ Marky, Presha and London Elektricity to name but a few. The London-based New Zealander also released his debut LP this year, 'Presence'.

For his Fresh Blood mix, Tokyo Prose mixes up "a bunch of tracks I'm really enjoying playing at gigs, a number of album things, a couple of brand new bits and a few older tracks". Enjoy!

For people who don’t already know you, can you tell us a little about yourself? I'm Sam Reed and I write music as Tokyo Prose. I'm originally from Auckland, NZ but I'm currently living in London. I primarily write liquid drum and bass and I've just released my debut album 'Presence' on Samurai Music.

How did you first get into electronic music? I've always listened to a lot of music and previously played the guitar and piano. I purchased some turntables a number of years ago and along with a bunch of mates started collecting and DJing drum and bass. Electronic music just came as a natural progression after being into rock and then hip hop.

What are some of your musical influences? I listen to a lot of music. More or less every time I listen to music, it's something I haven't heard before so i'm always searching for new, interesting music. Things like Spotify have really changed how I consume music. I still buy a lot of vinyl but I discover a lot of it on Spotify.

What would you say has been the most gratifying moment so far in your career? Recently releasing my debut album has easily been the most rewarding. After working for a long time on it, it is great to have it out there. I've also found all my recent gigs to have been really good and the Sun and Bass festival this year was a real highlight as always.

Is the stuff you play now what you’ve always played or has your style evolved over time? Since getting into dnb I've always been into the deeper more musical stuff. My style hasn't had any major fluctuations but has the normal ebb and flows.

What are some of your highlights from recent shows? As mentioned above Sun and Bass this year was amazing as always. My album launch in London was a really special night as well. Recently playing sets with DRS, SP:MC and Lowqui MC'ing for me has just been amazing.

 photo TP_zps7a3427a6.jpg

What are some of your dream gigs? In terms of gigs I prefer to play more intimate gigs. It's all still kinda new for me so I'm enjoying going to lots of new places for the first time.

What record labels do you hope to work with in the future? Samurai Music is definitely the main home for my music at the moment. There are a couple of other labels within Dnb I would really love to work towards a release with, but Samurai Music will be my primary output.

Who would you like to collaborate with? Within dnb I would love to do some more tracks with LSB. He has been writing music for a while but his output at the moment is just incredible.

I was fortunate enough to have a number of collaborators like Lenzman, Synkro, LSB, Riya, DRS & Fox etc. feature on my album and pretty much all of these people I would consider "dream collaborators". I would welcome the chance to work with any of the collaborators on my album again. Outside of dnb I really love Robert Glasper's and Floating Points' stuff at the moment but they're less realistic collabs!

Can you tell us a little about how you decided to approach the exclusive mix you made for Pulse? The mix is a bunch of tracks I'm really enjoying playing at gigs, a number of album things, a couple of brand new bits and a few older tracks.

What else is on the horizon for Tokyo Prose? At the moment I'm really enjoying not being committed to any projects. I have a few ideas where I would like to take my music so for me at the moment it's up to me to put the time in the studio and see if I can get these ideas to work.

Sirensound Drum ‘n Bass Party – Hardcore vs Ragga

0
0

Saturday 11 October 2014 marks Sirensound’s 2nd birthday. Sirensound, a weekly drum ‘n bass radio show from Joburg which has a substantial following, presents a unique drum ‘n bass party at MiHouse (Cru Culture Club) this Saturday, with a lineup of some of South Africa’s freshest talent, including Damage Inc, Mr. Green, Menticide, Phizicist and more.

With an emphasis on neuro, hardcore, tech and jungle, the event looks set to be a fierce chance to release the wild side. On the outside stage a slightly more mash-up genre-mix will be going down with some ragga and hip hop influences.

Damage Inc is a popular collective consisting of Cape Town-based DJ/producers Willem Els ("Pziezzo Electric") and Allan Slow ("Multicrisis"), who produce original Drum 'n Bass, Neuro, Tech and Crossbreed material in-studio, and mix blazing live sets at dancefloors across the land. Live, they are often joined by their JHB-based emcee, Gord Laws ("Heavy G"), who adds freestyle rhymes and a "live band" element to Damage Inc performances.

Mr. Green began his music career producing hip hop, DJing and making beats. Although this remains an integral part of Mr. Green's repertoire he is now known for his drum 'n bass skills, with his DJ sets gaining recognition for his incorporation of ragga sounds.

"Phizicist started throwing Dubstep SA parties in Pretoria before Skrillex growl tutorials took over the world and smoking cigarettes was not as frowned upon”, says his friend Sean Nel. He represents wider variety of genre in drum ‘n bass than most others, with influences from a range of sources, and is also part of many other projects including Hawkword.

The Essential Mix headed to Ibiza last Thursday to catch the final party of Space Ibiza's 25th anniversary season and to record Carl Cox's spectacular two hour set for the BBC Radio 1 show.

Our man on the ground over on the White Isle, Jake Calvert, was there to witness Coxy's final magic of 2014:

"At midnight, Space’s undisputed king, Carl Cox, took the reins for the final two outdoor hours, with a customary toast on the mic, “Are you ready?” A rapturous response ensued and Coxy settled into his heavy tech-house groove with driving tough tracks forming the foundation of his sound."

You can listen to Carl Cox's full set below which includes tracks from Radio Slave, Trus’me, Spencer Parker and more.

Khen & Sonic Union - Driven By Demand

Khen&Sonic Union
Driven By Demand EP
Tribal Pulse

8.0/10

For their latest effort, the much lauded pairing of Khen & Sonic Union team up again for craft a spiritual, deeply moody bit of electronic house music for Glasgow’s increasingly consistent Tribal Pulse label. Six releases in, the imprint has began to make a name for itself as a purveyor of top-notch grooves, and with Sonic Union (Sweden) and Khen (Israel), they've stumbled over a veritable gem of a duo with a sound palette that's as diverse as their respective backgrounds.

Up first is the original mix of "Driven By Demand" - a lively, dynamic bit of synthetic house music with lots of rattling toms, a groaning bassline and plenty of clean, crisp synths that inject plenty of mood into the track. At nearly 8 minutes long, it’s reminiscent of the unrelenting progressive journeys from Global Underground's heyday, and as such it's sure to be a hit with the more adventurous DJs on the scene.

On the other hand is the remix from Belgian progressive master Pole Folder. His version is that bit more energetic and edge of your seat, with celestial pads adding an element of spacey intrigue to an EP that stands out from the pack thanks to its many effervescent sounds. A worthy EP that'll cause a few surprises, this one will be getting rewinds for months to come.

Shore Thing NYE 2014 Cancelled

0
0

The popular and long running NYE party Shore Thing, held annually on Sydney's Bondi Beach by  Fuzzy, will not be going ahead this year. Organisers have announced the news via a statement on the festival's facebook page.

"Sad news: No Shore Thing this year!

After lengthy discussions with Council and other stakeholders, it has been agreed that the Shore Thing event will not take place this New Years Eve at Bondi Beach.

Throughout the time we've been holding new year's eve events at Bondi Beach, it has been a pleasure working with Waverley Council and Eastern Suburbs Police to ensure every New Year's Eve went off without a hitch, and we'd like to thank everyone who has been involved with Shore Thing over the years, and of course all the people who chose it as their new year's eve party. Hopefully it will be back in 2015..."

As the Daily Telegraph reports, Bondi residents have been fighting to stop the event for years, claiming that it attracts anti-social behaviour and prevents locals from being able to use the beach for their own NYE celebrations.

“There’s been an event at Bondi for close on 20 years,’’ Bondi Beach Precinct convener Lenore Kulakauskas told the Telegraph. “This year there will be no fencing on our beach and we’ll be able to walk around on NYE and enjoy ourselves.”

Shore Thing has played host to countless international acts over the years including The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Groove Armada, Eric Prydz and Skrillex.
