Watch Highlights of Jay-Z's Six Hour Improv Art Gallery Performance

0
0

Last night Jay-Z performed a six hour marathon interpretation of new album cut Picasso Baby at a New York art gallery.

The art/dance/rap hybrid saw the Magna Carta star inviting members of the intimate, hand picked crowd of artists, collaborators and general creative types to perform, with members doing everything from break dancing to singing while Jigga lip synced to the track.

It seems that the purpose of the unusual show (other than because he can) was to film a docu-music video for Picasso Baby, the second track on the Magna Carta Holy Grail album, and will feature appearances from director Judd Appatow, rapper Wale and others who were all invited to take part.

Check out some footage from the performance below.

SIS & Arado Land At Flying Circus Ibiza

According to the Flying Circus team, ‘the Flying Circus concept was birthed, like all the best ideas, by accident. The aim? To celebrate life with good people while enjoying great music. Simple. Flying Circus brings together the music loving family to climb the walls in primal elation, surrendering our physical bodies to pure auditory joy. It’s primal and gritty, and speaks to your soul with no glossy adjectives.’ And what better place to hold an affair such as this than the dark, anything goes basement of one of Ibiza’s hottest clubs, Sankeys. Running for 13 weeks over the course of the season, this soiree kicks off this Friday, featuring the likes of Carl Craig, dOP (live), SIS (live), Dance Spirit (live), Arado, and more. We caught up with two Sankeys first-timers, SIS and Arado, to chat about their hopes and expectations for the party, as well as werewolves, gypsies, full bosomed women, 15th century tarts, and of course, bass bitches!

First off, you have been playing here in Ibiza for quite a few years now, but this will be your first time at Sankeys Ibiza. What have you heard about it, and are you looking forward to playing there?
SIS: Some DJ friends of mine like Butch have told me that Sankeys is a dirty, grimy, filthy, sweatbox basement club with no windows or sunlight, which is good. I don't want anything to affect my usual crowd of nightlife vampires and werewolves. We will all dine in blood. You know, Ibiza is always so sunny and hot, and I am currently playing there once a month for my free beach party CIRCLE at Sirocco, so to be able to take a crowd on a wild hypnotic trip with nothing to distract them, like a nice sunset view or girls in bikinis, is a welcome atmosphere for me. Take the bass, bitches! This is SIS, live!

Arado: Oh yeah, of course, I’m really looking forward to play there! I’ve heard only good things. I mean, we are talking about Sankeys, it’s one of the best clubs there.

Have you played for any Flying Circus parties before? If so, how was it? SIS: Yes, I've played many times for the FC crew in Antwerp. They are funny people, like a group of gypsies with nothing but booze and floozy women with huge bosoms to entertain me after flying from Berlin. In fact, after playing for Flying Circus I changed my rider to always include 15th century tarts, which is truly a necessity for me to play well now.

Arado: No not yet, this is my first time and I’m very proud about being a part of Flying Circus this summer. I’m very excited and extremely grateful for this chance.

Is there anyone you’re especially excited to see on the lineup that night? SIS: Of course the Audiofly guys are cool and I like their funny faces. I especially like Carl Craig, although I think I must teach him the SIS ‘Hierbas Swing’ on the night, as I feel he would benefit from having such knowledge of contemporary dance moves. These old Detroit guys need to keep up with trends, man.

Arado: Oh yes, Audiofly, obviously and my man SIS. We play a lot together at Ibiza, which is always nice. Actually I’m looking forward to all the other DJ’s playing. It will be a night to remember!

I think your new down and dirty remix of for Federico Locchi & Watch might go down pretty well in the notoriously underground Basement at Sankeys, think we might get a taste of if that nightArado: Thanks! Yes I will definitely play that one. I’ve also made a lot of new tracks and a remix for my homie Yaya – can’t wait to drop them!

And finally, any chance we might hear your wicked remix of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ (which can be found here) at the Flying Circus opening party?  SIS: Haha, yes if you guys get lucky! I made that edit in just a couple of hours, however the reaction was really big so it inspired me to remix other pop groups. Get set for forthcoming SIS edits of the Spice Girls, Cotton Eye Joe and Crazy Frog. Whoopa!

You can catch SIS & Arado at Sankeys Ibiza tomorrow Friday 12th July for the Grand Opening of Flying Circus!

See below for more info and tickets!

GOODLUCK release music video for track – Bounce Me Brother

0
0

If you’re into Electro-Swing, swing into this, GOODLUCK has just released the ‘Bounce Me Brother’ Official music video. Co-Produced by non-other than Mr Sakitumi with the master behind the final production being The Grrrl. Inspiration for the video came from Max Fleischer’s old hand-drawn style animations that played on theatre stages made out of what looked like paper cut-outs.

The dance duo known as GOODLUCK worked with The Grrrl with a collection of Max Fleischer clips and started to narrate a video where bouncing to the beat was what it was all about. The Grrrl bounces between several mediums and for this project it was no different. She created the stage setting and projected the clips that Mr Sakitumi had re-worked through Ableton Live into it.

Not an easy task to get to final product with this video, the result is great and with the GOODLUCK track ‘Bounce Me Brother’ blasted at the same time – good vibes – good jives, true depiction of GOODLUCK’s music and presence on stage.

Wavefront Music Festival Brings A European Feel To Beaches of Chicago

0
0

Chicago’s Montrose Beach turned into a three-day nonstop dance party this past weekend for Wavefront Music Festival. Recently taking over the country’s festival scene by storm, the two-year-old event came in quite hot this year. With many additions and improvements, Wavefront has already established itself as one Chicago’s best summer music festivals. We have all the guys from Spybar to thank for their hard work!

I may be overreaching a little by saying the festival brought a little slice of Ibiza to the Midwest with the sandy shores of Lake Michigan and elite talent from around the world. Either way, the festival was fully equipped with the finest talent in deep house, techno, and nu-disco. Justice, Maya Jane Coles, Scuba, Hot Natured, and Dubfire are just a few of the artists who attended. Chicago natives like Derrick Carter, Bad Boy Bill, Frankie Knuckles, and Mark Farina also joined the bill this year, returning home to the city that added so much to the evolution of house music. What set the festival apart from its competition was the well thought musical programming that attracted a diverse lineup of veterans and a rather esoteric crowd of electronic music listeners. Beach in addition to quality underground music, what’s there not to love?

Montrose Beach is the city’s largest lake shore escape, which made it possible to host additional stages than it did the previous year. It was an easy festival to navigate, and attendees could always take a break from the crowd, at whatever point they wished. Six stages of artists kept the music rocking from noon until 10 p.m. The Wave stage in particular, was designed to stimulate a tidal wave that propelled water in the crowd at elated moments. The Cube stage placed the DJ booth inside a deck with designs that drifted at the same pace as the beat. This year they added a ferris wheel, Starship 2000, and a large blow up water slide. Although the stages were a bit close in proximity, I didn’t hear many complaints about it throughout the weekend.

The first day welcomed sounds from Tiefschwarz, Droog, and Martin Buttrich in the afternoon. As the day progressed, Venezuelan pair Fur Coat really got the party started with their heavy tribal bass over at the Oasis stage. Their song, “You and I,” was one of the top charted tracks last year and still one of my favorites this year. Maya Jane Coles certainly contributed her own massive waves to the beach at the Cube stage, which kept the crowds pumping in a nonstop groove. Israeli DJ Guy Gerber’s set followed hers as he used synthesizers to create techno rhythms before adding his signature washes of ambient sounds. Back at the Oasis stage, Life & Death label boss DJ Tennis treated us with a hypnotic set and even a new release on his label by Mind Against. NYC legend Danny Tenaglia and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy were two of the closing acts, along with a live set from the French trio dOP. The three guys who make up dOP were indeed, well, dope. From the moogs and synths to the vocalist freestyling to the jazz Rhodes keyboard, this was one for the books on Friday.

Saturday highlights were at the Cube stage starting with Argentinian producer Guti. His deep knowledge of music theory shows in every set I’ve seen of his, adding a soulful element that other artists aren’t always capable of including in their own sets. After Guti, electronic producer Matthew Dear performed under his pseudonym Audion, playing a bass-busting minimalistic set. He always brings the most intelligent, futuristic beats in their purest form. Meanwhile, the Chicago Heritage Legends Stage had listeners getting down to some old school house from Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. If the sun wasn’t hot enough, Dubfire capped things off back at the Cube with a crushing set - no surprises there. Another closing act was Detroit techno veteran Seth Troxler who performed a stripped-down, yet soulful audio experience. However, it would have been a sin to Chicago house music if I didn’t go see legendary Frankie Knuckles perform. I headed over to see the Godfather of House Music as he was joined by Jamie Principle, presenting their duet “I’ll Take You There” live. With their turntables giving off quick tempo beats and gospel-inspired vocal samples, the two of them kept it super old school.

The final day of the festival was the hottest, even after the sun slipped behind the Chicago high-rise skyline. But that didn’t stop loyal festival goers from hitting the beach to hear some impeccable sounds one last time. It was without a doubt the most moving day, stacked with talented artists from locals to legends. Late in the afternoon, the Martinez Brothers had the Cube stage filled with dancers for their punchy tech-house set. The brothers, aged 23 and 20, are always in high spirits and bring the best energy to their decks. It’s hard not to fall for their style of mixing. Another one of my favorites from the weekend was Scuba, whose funky basslines and low-slung rhythms paraded out of the speakers, thick with sub. His subdued sea of bass soon had our feet moving through the sand. Some of the most anticipated acts of the weekend were the closing sets on Sunday, including Justice, Hot Natured, and Nicolas Jaar. Justice performed on the Wave stage, which had a noticeably rowdier crowd all day. The French duo included classics like “D.A.N.C.E.” and Run-DMC’s “It’s Tricky.”

Finally, the moment I had been looking forward to all weekend had arrived, the musical genius that is Nicolas Jaar took to the stage. His live show was remarkable. It featured an array of keyboards, synths, and his own vocals, embodying his sensual experiment into aural depth and groovy dance beats. Jaar’s music contains textures that subjectively have an emotional resonance. Especially admirable for me, was the way he never lost sight of the art in his performance, maintaining the same seductive vibe until the end. Fireworks displayed over the water as his set neared the end. My heart was racing at almost the same bpm he was playing, which was one of the coolest moments of the weekend. This was not a deep house or techno set; those terms don’t cover nearly enough ground. This was Nicolas Jaar.

While driving back home on Monday was a bit brutal, spending the July 4th weekend celebrating the birthday of our nation with a fine array of house and techno left me with a smile on my face. Sometimes all it takes is music, curated by the best, to bond our country on the most important ideal for which it stands - freedom of expression.

VIDEO: San Francisco's Public Gets Twerked

The streets of San Francisco will never be the same after Diplo's introduction of "twerking it" - the dance move of bending over and pumping your butt up and down. In this video, three female twerkers have toured the city, enlightening the unsuspecting people of San Francisco with a display of the recent dance craze. The trio hits everywhere from parks, to grocery stores, to public transportation accompanied everywhere by their own twerking soundtrack. Reactions on people's faces vary from awkward looks to straight up laughs, either way it's fun to watch the responses to the obnoxious fad.

The video was made by Simple Pickup, a comedy group of three guys who help men pick up girls through their online video tutorials, articles, and bootcamp.  See the full video below.

Avalon LA's House Takeover with Dennis Ferrer and Hector

0
0

It's all about damn good, soulful, true-to-its-roots house music on Saturday, July 27th at Avalon in LA with Dennis Ferrer and Hector. It's no laughing matter, as these two mean serious business when it comes to music. Both of them wrecked the Beatport Stage at Detroit's Movement Festival this year, each with their own take on the gospel of house that easily rocked the crowds day and night.

Dennis Ferrer is a certified veteran of the New York house music scene, working since the late 80's alongside talent such as Little Louie Vega and Kerri Chandler. One of Defected's showcased talent, Ferrer has led an illustrious career, raised on the sounds of soul and disco as a child. Nowadays, his sets delight house enthusiast looking for authenticity and educates the new generation of clubgoers what house music truly is and where it came from. One thing is for sure, he's a qualified instructor and as skillful DJ as he is a producer.

Hector may still be young, but working at Phonica Records has made him a house impresario as well as a firm believer of vinyl. Recently, he released his compilation on 1trax, taking the uncommon approach of recording one of his sets, while playing at Womb in Tokyo. It's a techier foray, with dark notes that keep you hooked from the start with tracks from tINI, Anthea, and Andrew Grant. You can read the interview here, as he details how the mix came together and what obstacles came with recording live. Hector hails from Mexico but finds himself currently living in Berlin, when he's not touring the world. Eager to learn, Hector looks up to DJs such as his label boss Loco Dice, Richie Hawtin, and Adam Beyer.

We're looking forward for these two house maestros taking over one of LA's largest clubs, spinning their message on an excellent sound system. Be sure to look for our upcoming interview with Dennis Ferrer. LA are you ready?

English singer-songwriter and Skrillex's GF, Ellie Goulding, is yet another pop star set to try her hand at DJing, making her first appearance on the wheels of steel at the Surrender nightclub - part of the chic Wynn Hotel.

Goulding is no stranger to dance music, having lent her vocal stylings to the likes of big-hitting EDM names such as Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Zedd and Bassnectar, though her gig at Surrender will mark her first time ever as a DJ.

If you're in Sin City on July 26th and keen to see her play you can grab tickets here. We here at Pulse are rather curious as to what Ellie is going to spin, that's for sure. Will her set be as successful as hubby Skrillex's recent Essential Mix? One can only wonder...

Jon Hopkins - Immunity

0
0

Jon Hopkins
Immunity
Domino Records

London-based piano maestro Jon Hopkins’ latest, 'Immunity', is tender and raw. It is his fourth studio album, sprouting from an extensive and eclectic background as producer and musician; there is a sense of wisdom and deep emotion in the sound he has created.

Opening with 'We Disappear', familiar electrically-charged crunchy beats lay the foundation. It's harsh; a first-time listener might not get the idea, but wait until the synths smooth out and the beautiful pizzicato-piano peaks out like a diamond in the rough. Much like the opening track, 'Open Eye Signal', 'Breathe This Air' and 'Collider' are grungy, beat-driven build-ups that work on a dance-floor. Listening is like being caught in the calm chaos of a breaking wave.

'Abandon Window' sets the theme for the second half of the album, which has a softer feel. A touching theme on the piano evokes thoughts of a budding talent, like a genius with a new instrument, just finding one nice sound after the other and piecing them together gently. You have to wonder if these are harmonies that Hopkins has held onto for a long time, finally pasting them across an airy soundscape, suspending them in a cavernous dream. It is a sign of mature musicality, and his background as a brilliant pianist shines through in the simplest sounds.

'Form by Firelight' is one of the standout tracks. Its calm groove is like a slow parachute fall through the clouds before the crackle of Hopkins’ signature beats wakes you in a grating but strangely welcome-to-the-party kind of way. 'Sun Harmonics' is a masterpiece; it is the one to listen to if that’s all you have time for. It encapsulates the feel of the whole album before the coda, 'Immunity', fades through like an afterglow.

There is a lot of warmth here. If there is a theme, it seems to be Hopkins showing us the beauty (or even perfection) in imperfection. This album is like going on a hike up a steep scenic mountain trail. The ground is bumpy with jutting rocks; you’ve been walking for days, it’s not easy, but it’s stunning. You can get down to this, but what makes this album really worth listening to are the spectacular vantage points dotted along the way.
