Check Out The Actors Playing Daft Punk In a New French House Film

Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival next month is a new film tracing the explosion of French electronic music in the '90s.

Directed by, Mia Hansen-Løve, 'Eden' tells the "largely autobiographical' story of Sven Love, who along with artists like Daft Punk, was a pioneer in the early French clubbing and rave days.

Much like Daft Punk, Sven formed the DJ duo Cheers with his best friend, and quickly rose to prominence. However, instead of going on to global superstardom, their success was short-lived and intense, with drug addiction, money mismanagement and relationship issues playing a central theme in their lives, which is what the film follows.

While Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, AKA Daft Punk, will be played by Arnaud Azoulay and Vincent Lacoste (pictured above, respectively), DJs like Tony Humphries and Tony Hunter will play themselves, and several original club names and locations will be included.

Daft Punk also signed off on the film, and have agreed to licence three songs for it.

“Fortunately, Daft Punk have read the script and agreed to help us. Without their consent, the project could not succeed,” Love told Tsugi.fr.

For more info on the release of 'Eden,' head to the film's Facebook page.

Climbers: 'all the inspiration comes from life and experience'

Mexican duo Jay Blakk and Kiko Deal, otherwise known as Climbers, have fast made a name for themselves since forming back in 2011. Ahead of a busy tour schedule across the US and Europe, we catch up with the pair to find how the project started, who inspires them, and where, amidst all the travelling, they define “home”. On top of an interesting chat, Climbers also provided a mix full of moody, deep and powerful flavours for your listening pleasure.

How did Jay and Kiko become Climbers? JB: We're friends from high school and we started going to rave parties together when all our other friends didn’t want to go. We both supported each other on different musical projects we had back then, but one day we said, “Ok, let's do it”, while we were at my house sitting on the couch. “Let’s just take one last shot and make something together, or just start working as lawyers.”

KD: It was a difficult moment in our lives and music wasn’t happening for us yet. So after a talk in Jay’s apartment about it, we decided to form a project. Actually at the beginning I didn’t want to do it; I was so tired of trying and that day, I went to his house to have a drink and say goodbye to music…and here we are.

Do you find you each take on different roles in the partnership? JB: Well yeah, each one has their role. I’m in the programming area and the business too and Kiko is more in the music one, but at the same time we both work on everything and we support each other in all the aspects of life, not just music. This is our job, but at the same time it’s a lifestyle.

Pete Tong named you “Future Stars” in September of last year. What effect did that have on your musical career? KD: Well we were pretty glad and honoured to be future stars of Pete Tong. After that we had a lot of work touring in Europe and America. I think that was the hardest tour we ever had, back and forth between those continents.

Where do you take inspiration from when producing tracks? Are there any particular artists that have influenced your sound? JB: I think I can speak for both of us, and maybe it’s gonna sound cheesy, but all the inspiration comes from life and experience. From the loved ones and the ones we got away; family, friends and trips. Inspiration comes always in different ways, you just need to find it out. For me, big inspirations are Bob Marley and James Zabiela.

KD: I have too many artists to list, but I would like to say (Guns N' Roses), because it was my first record, and Joy Division.

You've already released on a number of successful labels such as Get Physical and Culprit. What other labels would you like to release on in the future? KD: We'd love to release on Kompakt and Ellum.

Where can we expect to see you play on your upcoming European tour? JB: This year we just got our work visas for the USA, so right now we have a busy schedule in North and South America. I think in October we're gonna be back in Europe for a nice tour...UK, Romania, Spain, Ukraine, France and some others.

Is there anywhere in the world that you look most forward to playing? KD: To be honest we love to play in our country (Mexico), especially in Playa del Carmen. Actually it’s one of our most favourite places in the world. But in the end the place we're most looking forward to is the next one we have in our schedule.

What's the vibe like on the dance floor in Mexico? JB: It’s a random vibe. You can find different types of parties. One day a beach, another with a chill vibe and the other a posh club with fancy ones. In the end we have nice people and it’s up to you where you wanna go. The only thing you have for sure is a good welcome and people dancing all the time.

Now onto your mix for Pulse Radio. Plenty of deep, powerful and melodic gems in there. Where do you find most of your music? JB: Well it’s music from Beatport, music from us, some promos and gifts from friends.

The last track is your own, “Home”. It certainly has a pleasant, comfortable, homely feel to it. Which home were you think about while you were making this? JB: Definitely our actual home, but after all the tours and travel we've found out home is the place you are. One day it could be your place with your family and the other, the chair of an airport. You need to learn, otherwise you're going to be homesick every day

Which do you prefer, producing or DJing? KD: Both are great but I think we prefer producing.

Finally, what productions are next in the pipeline from Climbers? We have a new EP coming on Smoke N’ Mirrors and another one with our home Culprit, as well as some remixes for cool artists and more surprises!

Climbers' remix of 'My Escape' on Selador is out now. Buy it here.

Nicole Moudaber & Carl Cox go Back-to-Back at Space Ibiza: In Review

$

Carl Cox’s night at Space Ibiza is one of the biggest on the island, and at this time of year, you can always expect it to be particularly rammed. Add to that the prospect of a back-to-back set with Nicole Moudaber, and sparks were sure to fly.

On entering Space, I took a quick diversion via El Salon, which was being hosted by the Ibiza Spotlight crew. El Salon is always a lovely little corner of Space where you’ll find yourself treated to something different, whether it’s a fine selection of disco classics, or on this occasion, a great serving of hip-hop courtesy of a live MC. It was unexpected and refreshing to say the least.

As fun as El Salon is however, there was some big-room fare to experience. MK had a strongly British crowd bobbing along on the Terrace to those unmistakeably bouncy bass lines and shuffling rhythms – accessible, fun and full of energy.

Meanwhile Nicole Moudaber was already plying her trade in the Discoteca. Rammed and exuberant as ever, the Discoteca’s crowd was full of anticipation. Moudaber’s sound was driving and dark, typified by all-consuming bass and straight sturdy tech-house and techno rhythms. Revellers filled all corners of the room, reacting to the bold in-your-face sounds of Moudaber.

Nicole Moudaber is at home on the biggest of stages, pushing the crowd hard as if to test their resolve, she dropped techno with the biggest of kicks and the kind of rumbling bass you feel throughout your body. This big room sensibility is what makes the match with Carl Cox work so well.

It was peak-time fare that swallowed the party-goers up and as the anticipation grew and momentum grew yet further, Nicole continued to pummel the revellers with tough cuts, hurtling rapidly towards her meeting with the titan Coxy. The closer it got to 3am, the more excited people were getting – hands in the air moments were coming thick and fast, whilst people danced their way as far forward as possible.

Coxy stepped up at 3am – the big hair and big man power pair going back-to-back immediately, truly pushing the crowd further. Back-to-back sets are exciting occasions, there’s just something inherently energising about watching two stars combine to create techno magic, and this pair’s sounds fit together exquisitely. Complimenting each other fluidly, the duo delivered a succession of club weapons solely created with the intention of inducing wild dance floor antics.

Before long though, Coxy and Nicole reeled proceedings in, taking a turn towards murky territory and toying with the now swaying throng. The change of tone slowly built towards another raucous peak however, with delay effects used sublimely to shape towards another crashing drop and powerful raw groove.

After dropping into deeper territory there was a distinct change of pace as the jacking vibe stepped up and Coxy grabbed the mic. “Oh yes, oh yes Kryoman!” he proclaimed, as sparks flew from the spinning performer suspended above the Discoteca crowd.

Skipping jacking percussion injected more groove and the pair continued to pound through their set with efficiency and a great level of chemistry. We all know Coxy will always bring brilliant times, but adding another star to the mix just served to spice things up that little bit. You won’t be surprised when we tell you Coxy continues to make sparks fly.

Apollonia All Night Long at DC-10: In Review

$

Movement Torino’s Saturday night takeovers at DC-10 have been particular standouts in August, and the third in the series of parties raised the bar yet again. We’ve spoken a lot about the continuing rise of Dyed Soundorom, Shonky and Dan Ghenacia – known collectively as Apollonia– and after their enormous Amnesia opening set they’ve been well and truly on our party radar.

Whilst remaining close friends throughout their careers after meeting at Dan’s famous Kwality after parties on the equally famous Paris party boat, Le Batofar, the threesome has been plying their trade separately for years.

However, it’s in the past few years the trio have really pushed themselves as Apollonia, as a product of the special bond they have in friendship and in musical taste. This friendship is vital to Apollonia’s continuing success and appeal – they play with a chemistry that no one else on the underground house and techno scene can boast of possessing.

The main room’s shadowy feel and red glow was sound tracked perfectly by the three friends as they took us through a journey of expertly selected cuts from all corners of house music. Maybe it’s the choppy manic percussion or the chunky infectious bass lines, but the tracks combined with the ecstatic crowd reactions to create the kind of heady atmosphere that we crave, and the back and forth exchange between the Apollonia boys and the revellers created an electric vibe throughout. Apollonia have spoken about how they’re so in tune with each other that they become almost one artist, here they connected with everyone partying in the room to create one collective of hedonistic White Isle spirit.

The long set allowed the relationship to build over the full course of the night, and by 3am we were heavily locked in with the guys propelling the momentum with consummate ease. The spoken words, piano stabs and acidic bursts of Maurice Joshua’s ‘This Is Acid’ caused damage on the floor whilst the deep subtlety of Michael Mayer’s ’17 & 4’ plunged us into a more blissed-out intoxicated state.

‘Bless The Funk’ by At Jazz was similarly heady and murky as Apollonia took us through some deep wavy after-hours textures before building things back up to Scoper & Bubba’s direct and driving dance floor killer, ‘I’m Satisfied (Bretts World of Nonsense Remix)’.

One thing that is always striking about the three Frenchmen is their locked-in relationship with the groove. There is an innate sensibility in their selections, which focuses on everything that makes your body move to the sound of those funkiest of rhythms. It’s equally as exciting to watch them interacting behind the decks, having just as much of a party as the rest of us. The breadth of the trio’s selections is also significant – it’s so refreshing to hear them calling on all corners of house music, from the late ‘80s to the present day, and making it both compelling and cohesive.

With the chance to explore over a long period of time, Apollonia were allowed to truly get into their stride and show us the full extent of their talents, controlling the vibe with minute detail and more eclectic selections – from Ricardo Villalobos’ warped and trippy ‘Lazerpresent’ to the classic sounds of Mike Dunn’s ‘So Let It Be House’. Whether they’re minimal tracks, classic Chicago house cuts or techier selections, Apollonia’s unique touch is always stamped on the music.

Any DJ can have all the latest and biggest records ready to drop, but the true sign of skill and talent is the way they shape the vibe with expert knowledge and a genuine feel for the atmosphere of the party. Apollonia control the dance floor with fun, expertise and knowledge like few others can.

Boston Calling Attendees Monitored with Facial Recognition Technology

Boston police and IBM reportedly teamed up at last year’s two editions of Boston Calling Music Festival (May and September of 2013) to test out a new facial recognition system which IBM calls its ‘Intelligence Operations Center.’ The technology secretly scanned every person who attended the festivals without their knowledge or consent.

The first test took place only a month after the Boston Marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured dozens near the race’s finish line. Although theoperation was primarily run by IBM employees, Boston police were on hand at all times.

Using more than ten cameras, they captured thousands of faces. The “People Search” feature identifies each persons “baldness,” “head color,” “skin tone,” and “clothing texture.” Evidence of this was discovered online by Dig reporters, who located several sensitive documents that have been exposed online for over a year.

Kristian Nairn, perhaps best known for playing Hodor on Game of Thrones, made waves in the electronic music community when fans found out that he was also a DJ. He embarked on a tour across Australia earlier this summer, and is now looking to make his ‘Rave of Thrones’ US debut this fall. The gig is scheduled for Friday, October 19th in New York at BB Kings Blues Club in bustling Times Square.

He will play alongside special guests Trance Rayder and Zedd Stark. What does Hodor sound like? Nairn recently shared some special summer mixes on his SoundCloud page and explained his style to the Sydney Morning Herald. “It starts off with some nice vocal-based deep house and progresses up over the set. I’ll probably mix in some EDM for a lack of a better term into some progressive house. I started DJing in the ‘90s so I’m very influenced by that – there’s a lot of piano stuff coming back around now which I really like.”

Tickets are now on sale, and costumes are encouraged. When asked if he would be dressing up for his set, he replied with “I don’t think I need to – I’m fucking Hodor after all. I’m not wearing a fucking sack.”

Punk Party: 'This is what we do and we love it.'

$

Although Punk Party is relatively new to the world of electronic music, they're definitely no strangers to good tunes. Nick John and Keith Varon have been putting out a steady stream of great originals and remixes since their formation as a duo, and when you listen to their work, it's obvious that Punk Party isn't just another aspiring pair of DJs looking to build some hype.

While performing and spinning are integral to their brand, these two are also extremely talented producers who have released some of the best new electronic muisc we've heard in a while. Their sound is an amalgamation of styles, and while this may be unexpected at first, it's not quite so out of left field once you learn a little bit more about the people behind the name.

Nick and Keith have had dipped their toes in just about every musical genre there is to have, and have one of the widest arrays of past experiences as both performers and producers. Their last official remix for Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" received support from the star herself, and was received with open arms by electronic music junkies everywhere, so we decided it would be a good idea to catch up with Punk Party as their latest remix looks to build on that success even more.  Be sure to give their take on Jaymes Young's "Habits Of My Heart" a listen below.

Tell us a little bit about your name, "Punk Party". You two have a background in other genres far outside the world of electronic music. Does the name have any connection with your past musical endeavors, or is it just a happy coincidence? The name definitely has a lot to do with our backgrounds in rock. Not only do we love rock music to this day but one of the main reasons we love the name "punk party" is because of what it stands for. To be "punk rock" really just means to do whatever you want and not care what anyone else thinks about it. We love making the music that we make and we don't really care what people say or think about it. This is what we do and we love it.

Since "Punk Party" is a duo, how does the remix and production process work? Are there any benefits to having two people working on the same track versus just one, like the majority of other electronic names? There are definitely benefits to having two people working on the tracks. Having two people with the same vision means that there is a much stronger editing process. We don't rest until every detail is perfect. It can get tedious at certain points but in the end is always worth the final product. The great thing is, we are both into the same types of music and agree on a lot of musical choices so it makes the process pretty easy.

It's pretty obvious that you've really embraced the world of dance music under this new moniker, but are there any sounds or influences that you've retained from your past lives as musicians in the punk rock scene?
Absolutely. First off, I think every one of our productions has a guitar. It's like glue. If we're in the studio and we feel like something is missing it's like, "why don't we put some guitar in there?" It's always the missing piece. But our guitar sounds are sneaky. You don't always know it's a guitar as the listener. It might be a guitar that we've drowned in reverb and delay to make it more of an interesting pad. Or maybe there's an automated filter on it that makes it sound like a synth. A lot of our writing process is influenced by our background in punk rock. The melodies and chords we tend to choose not only in our originals but in remixes as well are rooted in our past as punk rock musicians.

What inspired you to take the plunge and start making electronic music? Were you always fans, or is this a new passion of yours? I think we were always fans but just didn't completely fall in love until artists like deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner, Skrillex, Zedd, and Avicii came into the picture. Up until that point the songwriting just wasn't very interesting. Nothing against the history of dance but there always seemed to be a thick layer of cheese spread on too thick during the 90's and early 00's. Once the songs got stronger and the sounds got really interesting, that's when it hit us. But we've always been big fans of electronic music. Growing up we really dug bands like Nine Inch Nails that had that a really interesting take on electronic music.

This new Jaymes Young remix features a lot of great sounds you've incorporated into your past remixes, but his original material is so unique. Did the production process differ at all from your other remixes? Our approach wasn't any different. Our boy Matt Engelman at Big Beat really gets what we're doing and aligned us well with this remix. The big difference is in what we are influenced by now. Artists like Tchami, Zhu, and Oliver Heldens are really creating this cool new lane that we definitely want to be a part of. Overall, the whole process came really easily. When you have a great song and everything is recorded really well it's very inspiring. The sound from the original we used during the drop was so amazing. It had this really cool jazzy vibe so we sampled it just like we do with our vocals and then played it like a regular keyboard solo against the drums. That's the beauty of music. It's all about those accidents. You spend all this time like a scientist in your studio and you're just waiting for that beautiful accident to happen and then you chase after it until it's gone. It's all experimentation and inspiration.

Both of you are also strong vocalists as well. Does knowing how to sing affect how you approach songs with other artist's vocals when remixing and producing? Absolutely. Being singers we see the vocal as the main focus. To us it's a little more about how can we compliment this vocal rather than how can we make a cool track and fit the vocal in. That doesn't go to say the track should take a backseat but we spend a lot of time crafting certain elements around the vocal in order to complement it. We look at songs as two separate but equally important entities, the track being one and the song being the other. We do our best to make sure they stand on their own independently but also work well together at the same time.

You've already worked with some pretty big names in the electronic and pop music worlds (Charli XCX, Milkman, etc.) what's next for you two? Any names you'd like to get in the studio with? We're already working with some of our dream artists such as Project 46. We have an upcoming collab with them slated for a February release. We've been talking with The Chainsmokers a lot about doing a collab in the future. That would be a lot of fun. I think if someone like Zedd or Avicii approached us to do a collab we'd be pretty excited about that. Even though our taste is starting to veer away from the progressive house sound we really fell in love with dance music because of artists like them.
