Britain Decriminalises Online Piracy

$

0

Starting in 2015, Britain will effectively decriminalise the piracy of movies, music, software and videogames.

Called Creative Content UK, the new rule states that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will be able to send just four emails or letters to customers who they think have been downloading files illegally.

While the language of the letters will become more severe, they'll also contain an educational message, and won't threaten legal action.

The move comes after four years of talks between the Government, ISPs, Virgin Media, Sky TV and the BPI and Motion Picture Association.

Virgin Media said about the campain: "we will be informative in tone, offering advice on where to find legitimate sources of entertainment content."

Adding, "At no point will we share any customer information as part of this campaign."

Initially, the entertainment industry wanted ISPs to track suspected illegal downloaders and threaten them with prosecution and internet disconnection.

New Device Could Reduce Tinnitus

$

Are your ears ringing from the weekend? A promising new device may be able to reduce tinnitus by retraining the brain. MicroTransponder, a Texas company, has developed the ‘Serenity System,’ a transmitter attached to a nerve in the neck which connects several of the body’s organs to the brain.

The device is based on a treatment called vagus nerve stimulation, which was tested on mice in 2011. It is a brain training exercise that involved playing many different frequencies (unrelated to tinnitus) 300 times a day for 18 days. Reduced symptoms were reported following the experiment.

The ‘Serenity System’ is similar, with the user listening to computer generated sounds that trigger tinnitus as well as some that are closely related. The vagus nerve is stimulated and the brain is reconfigured.

However, the device isn’t for everyone. Fatima Husain at the University of Illinois warns that the ‘Serenity System’ is only for those severly affected by tinnitus.

The research follows an earlier study that found that MDMA could also be a cure for tinnitus.

Essential Mixing: Joy Orbison

When Pete Tong was asked about his favourite Essential Mixes from his 20 year stint on the show during his Reddit AMA last week, he rattled off names like Eric Prydz, Sasha and Ame, but ever the forward facer, he also made special mention to Joy Orbison's debut mix, labeling it as "pretty special."

Part of that comes down to the fact that DJ mixes and releases from Joy O are few and far between, and in this "rare outing" for the BBC 1 show the elusive UK jock effortlessly moves through 35 tracks from the likes of Four Tet, Pearson Sound, James Blake and his pal Boddika.

We first broke the news that dance music icon Danny Tenaglia was mixing the latest Balance release back in March during Miami Music Week. Now the full details surrounding the two-disc mix compilation have arrived including the tracklisting.

Balance 025 leans heavily towards tough house and techno, with most of the tracks re-edited by the New York DJ to specifically suit the mix.

"I could've never predicted this but I do feel that techno is most definitely better than ever - that's mainly because the tempo has finally gotten below 130 BPM," he says. "This made techno more soulful, more swingin', more bouncy and made you feel it like you never could've felt it at near 140 BPM."

Balance 25 will be released first in Australia on September 5th, followed by the UK, Europe and Asia on September 15th and then in the US on September 16th. Listen to a preview of CD1 below.

Melbourne Gets New Weekly Club Night 'Juke'

$

Melbourne is set to receive a brand new weekly club night, Juke, focusing on underground house, tech-house and techno.

Launching on August 23rd at one of Melbourne's most iconic music venues, The Prince of Wales, Juke promises to "consistently deliver the best dance music and appeal to a diverse mix of revelers." This new night should come as a tantalizing prospect for local clubbers given the lack of weekly underground house and techno nights in Melbourne.

The brains behind Juke is three seasoned promoters; David Sticca, who is part of the team behind Prince’s now defunct Super Disco nights, Harry Rowsthorn who is known for his work with Seven nightclub and is also a partner in the newly refurbished Savoy Tavern, and Kyle Hand, who is one half of Loud Entertainment, the brand involved with respected Melbourne club institutions such as Lockdown Jail Rave, Tomorrow Never Comes, and the weekly Fake Tits night (currently running in its third year).

“Melbourne has some great events but no real weekly outlet for the sort of underground house and techno that we like, so we decided to do something about it," Kyle Hand offers on how the idea started. "We really are just looking forward to bringing back high-calibre house and techno to Melbourne on a weekly basis. To do this at such an iconic venue such as Prince of Wales is even more exciting as it is synonymous with quality music and shows and a real Melbourne institution.”

Juke is set to host some of Melbourne best DJs as residents and will feature at least one international every month. The international acts for Juke haven’t been announced yet but Hand offers that we can expect from labels such as Hot Creations, Crosstown Rebels, Cocoon, Diynamic, Defected, 8 Bit and Cecille.

Patrick Topping: Man On Fire

$

If you’re spending any time in Ibiza this summer, chances are you'll hear Patrick Topping’s ‘Forget’ blasting from the speakers – we’ve heard it everywhere from Amnesia Terrace, to the Space Discoteca to the Sankeys Basement –  it’s truly become one of 2014’s Ibiza anthems.

On the day of Patrick Topping’s return to DC-10 for Paradise, we caught up with the Hot Creations man on the roof terrace of his hotel and took a few moments to discuss how he moved on from ‘frigid house’, Newcastle’s underground scene and his relationship with techno.

What was it that really got you into underground music? Yeah, I’d say it was going to the first Cocoon In The Park in Leeds. That was five summers ago now, that was the turning point. I had been getting into things a little bit, listening to bits and pieces, but at that time I was still into the kind of frigid house sound that Switch and Jesse Rose used to play – all that type of stuff.

Then I started to get into the underground a little bit, and going to Cocoon In The Park was a bit of an epiphany. Ever since then it’s been all about that kind of music.

Who was playing then? It was a wicked line-up actually, it was Steve Bug, Luciano, Sven and Adam Shelton opened I think – it was one of the best line-ups actually!

How did you end up there? Yeah, well I went with a couple of my mates, but none of them were really into that type of music either. I dragged them along and they didn’t really know what it was going to be like and I didn’t either! We put on a little minibus from Newcastle and went down.

After that I said I was going to go to Cocoon In The Park every year from now on, forever, but I missed my first one last summer. That was because I was playing out here though, [in Ibiza] so I didn’t mind!

What was the scene like in Newcastle back then? It’s always been pretty good in Newcastle. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Shindig before, a club night from up there, it’s one of the longest running nights after Back To Basics.

Having them in the city has been a really big influence and there are loads of other nights going on and the scene’s really big at the minute.

They used to do weekly as well, before I even went to Cocoon In The Park, so when I was first getting into it they had people like David Guetta and Laidback Luke and people like that on every week. Obviously they had the underground names as well.

When did it come to starting your own party in Newcastle? After that first Cocoon In The Park the next summer we went to Ibiza, came back and wanted to DJ, so I got some decks and I didn’t play out in public – I had them for about two years and never really bothered with them.

Then my mate asked me to DJ for his 21st so I taught myself to play, played at his 21st and that was the first time I’d played in public. So I felt I had the confidence to do my own night from there and I started it up.

You mentioned Ibiza – did you start coming on holidays? Yeah, I came with my girlfriend first, and told all my mates about it and they came the next year. I’ve been coming every year since.

How does it feel to be back at DC-10 for Paradise? I know mate, I’ve been looking forward to it since I came off the decks last year. I didn’t find out I had any dates here or that I had the residency here until about four months ago. So since last year I’ve been hoping that I’d be back. I can’t wait to play!

How many times are you playing again this summer? I’m playing three times in total. It’s the fourth party this season so I’ve been watching it every week getting more and more buzzing about it.

Obviously your track ‘Forget’ has been really big this summer – did you know you were onto a winner with that one? Well, when I made it I knew it was one of my better ones and I sent it off to Jamie straight away. Actually, I sent him that and ‘Boxed Off’ at the same time and he replied straight away saying, "This is your best track," and I didn’t know which one he was talking about!

I emailed and asked him, and he didn’t reply, so for a month after that I was wondering which one he was talking about. I eventually spoke to him and he was talking about ‘Forget’ so on the lead up to that coming out, the release before that, ‘Get Beasty’, had done really well and got to number one on the Beatport tech house chart.

After that got to number one, which I didn’t expect, and then Jamie saying ‘Forget’ was better I was kind of secretly hoping that it would get to number one as well and it did! It’s still there now which is crazy!

It’s literally everywhere. I’m getting texts and tweets off my mates saying they’ve heard it here and they’ve heard it there.

Did becoming a part of the Hot Creations crew really start to accelerate things for you? Yeah, totally – I had been DJing for about three years before the Hot Creations thing come about. That was just locally around Newcastle, it wasn’t until that first release with them that people outside of Newcastle started to take notice and it’s been mad since then.

I’ve heard a lot about how prolific you are in terms of production – how do you decide what you want to release? Well, I suppose Jamie’s been doing some shrewd A&R because I’ve been sending him loads and I’ve got about 90 unsigned tracks.

Every time I hear it’s even more. Yeah. I’m just trying to keep making them – I just made one the other day which I’m looking forward to trying out. I’ve sent them all really, there’s about five that I haven’t sent because I didn’t think he’d like them. Out of the one’s that have come out it’s really been his and Lee’s decision at the label of what’s good and what’s not really.

I know Cocoon here in Ibiza was a big influence on you – how did you end up with the sound you’ve got with your productions because they’re quite house-y and Cocoon’s obviously predominantly techno. Yeah, that is a good question because in my sets I do play quite a bit of techno. Not the kind of Berghain techno, but some of the dramatic stuff that Sven plays – that’s what I’m into.

So I do play quite a lot of that stuff. The thing is, as I was saying I’ve got quite a lot of unsigned tracks, it’s those ones that haven’t been signed. I do make the kind of techno stuff as well, but people haven’t really heard it unless it’s my mates who know what it is and hear me playing it in my sets.

I wouldn’t say full on techno, but more so than some of the stuff that’s come out. I do have that and I do want to release some of that stuff in time. My next one that’s coming out on Hot Creations – I wouldn’t say it’s techno, but it’s a lot darker and more banging than ‘Forget’. I’m glad it’s the next one after that.

What can you tell us about your next releases then. Well, at the moment there’s only that one track that’s due to come out in September on Hot Creations. It’s part of a summer compilation they’re doing so it’s 14 tracks, I think by 14 different artists. Apart from that I’ve had a Yousef remix that has just come and I’ve got one more remix that I can’t say anything about yet. I really want it to come out basically – it’d be my most high profile remix yet. So fingers crossed that one comes out.

Bryan Kessler - New York, Baby EP

Brian Kessler
New York, Baby EP
Get Physical

7.5/10.0

Get Physical has long been one of the go to labels when it comes to club-slaying, floor filling tech house sounds and this new one from Bryan Kessler is no different. Within the electronic music domain, Kessler is something of a renegade and anomaly in that he actual pens his own songs, has a decidedly rockist background and also is as adept at playing a guitar as he is programming a beat.

It makes his music - so far on Get Physical and LIKE Records - certainly stand out from the crowd, and challenges many of its most staid conventions. And for all the right reasons too.

Up first is ''New York, Baby'', by which a punky vocal cut characterises matters; stopping and starting and bubbling and boiling for the duration. A spangled bassline whips about above raw rock drums, melodies rise up a drunken scale and an aloof vocal delivery about living in New York - complete with various other spoken word snippets full of attitude - make for a bristling and evocative jam that's hard not to warm to. It’s a truly fresh sound for a house track and will stand out on dancefloors as a result.

Secondly on the EP is ''With Dr. Kessler''; a more conventional track with a teeth gritting lead synth line, tumbling drum fills, malfunctioning machine sounds and skating hi-hats that bring plenty of dynamism to the darkened, gritty groove. An unusual release it may be, but this one works in spades.

Details of Erol Alkan's FABRICLIVE 77 Mix Revealed

Details about Phantasy Sound boss Erol Alkan's FABRICLIVE 77 mix have now been revealed.

Set to be released in September, the compilation spans the likes of Jamie Paton’s remix of Maurice & Charles and Carisma's "Talento Matemático," Zongamin’s moody Manfredas rework and Alkan’s own percussive, mechanical remix of The Emperor Machine before delving into the Phantasy back catalogue.

Erol had this to say about the mix: "I certainly didn’t want this mix to be a flyer or advert for me as a DJ. I feel this mix is quite specific to fabric as they are all records I would want to play in that environment. Even though I have had the benefit of playing all 3 rooms on a regular basis, this mix feels like it was designed for Room 1.

It's influenced by the sight lines from the perspective behind the decks, the lights, the fact that sometimes all you can see are hands reaching into the booth, as well as those behind you dancing alone in the corners."

Tracklisting:
