It’s almost Friday, which means it’s almost time for the next installment of Sheik ‘N’ Beik’s monthly takeover of the Meatpacking District’s Up & Down! This week, Sheik ‘N’ Beik is bringing in Brooklyn deep house duo Walker & Royce (Crosstown Rebels, Safer At Night) for a very special basement session. Sheik ‘N’ Beik’s crew of talented resident DJs, FoNG and Jeffrey Scott, along with Nash, Jasper Stapleton, Mectec & Pva will join the main act in providing the tunes for the evening. The Duh! crew will co-host the event. This new party collective throws some seriously awesome parties in NYC every Friday.

<br>

Fresh from their European tour, Walker & Royce are finally back in the Big Apple after a two month adventure that took them to Watergate in Berlin, Sankeys Ibiza, Ministry of Sound in London and beyond. The groovy Brooklyn-based duo has been producing music together since 2011. One of their first releases caught the attention of Crosstown Rebels’ label boss Damian Lazarus, and the rest was history. Be sure to check out their latest EP, Moonlight Regatta, which dropped June 3rd on Curses’ imprint Safer At Night.

This will be the first time the headlining act will be featured downstairs and it’s going to be off the chain. The lighting is darker, the ceilings are lower, and the vibes are killer. Pull yourself together and bring your friends – celebrate the weekend right and don’t miss out!

For free entry before 11:30pm RSVP at missedconnections@sheiknbeik.com.

Laura Jones - Embrace EP

Laura Jones
Embrace EP
Leftroom Records

9/10

One of the leading ladies of the UK’s house scene, Laura Jones has developed a reputation for pushing a fresh, interesting sound that combines the jacking, analogue grit of old school Chicago with the smooth, soulful warmth of contemporary Europe. On the ‘Embrace EP’, Jones continues that approach, delivering four original slices of dancefloor bliss, backed up by remixes from Cassy and Paul Du Lac.

The title track consists of a simple rolling groove, comprised of punchy kicks, snappy snares and skittering hats. A tight analogue bassline bounces along over the subtle beats, joined eventually by an uplifting piano loop, filtered chords and sparkly pads that contrast nicely against the fun, upbeat low end.

‘Bright Lights’ is reminiscent of the golden era of progressive house in the UK. Chunky, tribal-esque drums and a low-down, dirty bassline propel the track forward, while warbled synths, breathy vocal loops and a deep TB-303 loop give it an introspective, emotive edge. Cassy’s remix takes things deeper, further down and darker. The original elements are present, but are twisted into grinding, peak-time versions of themselves, stripped of their emotive warmth and instead given a menacing, incessant energy.

Vinyl-only bonuses ‘Think Over’ and ‘Imagination Unreal’ straddle the line between house and techno, combining the melody of the former with the balls of the latter. ‘Think Over’ slowly builds layers of driving TR-808 percussion on top of each other, complementing them with a squelchy acid line, haunting pads, scratchy dub chords and choppy vocal edits.

‘Imagination Unreal’ has an instantly likeable swing to its groove, thanks to its excellent drum programming that conjures up memories of Chicago in the 90’s. Add in a hypnotic bassline, subtle keys and quirky synths and you have a late-night dancefloor igniter. Paul Du Lac’s remix heads into jack-a-thon territory, taking the drums from the original and programming them into a heads-down, foot-stomping rhythm. Splashes of the original’s melodic elements remain, though for the most part are left out, replaced with a subtle acid lead and dark chords.

Tracklist:
Embrace
Think Over [vinyl only]
Imagination Unreal [vinyl only]
Bright Lights
Imagination Unreal (Paul Du Lac Rhythm dub remix)
Imagination Unreal (Paul Du Lac Rhythm remix) [vinyl only]
Bright Lights (Cassy remix)

Art Crime - Release

Out on Willie Burns imprint W.T Records, this track is simply stunning. The whole EP is gold, but the rolling piano chords on this and solid kick make it a favourite for me.

Makam - You Might Lose It (Kerri Chandlers Deep Mix)

Classic Chandler groove, what can you say the man has steez for days.

Quell - Them Crowd Kids

This whole album on Jerome Sydenham’s label Ibadan is pretty special.

Mr G. - Let Down

There seems to always be a different Mr G. song that is in the rotation for me. The man is unstoppable.

Max Graef - Vino Rosetto

Have recently been giving this a rinse. Released on a BAH compilation EP and Max Graef’s recent full length LP. Another weapon producer.

Fresh Blood: John Dimas

Recently tapped to play his first gig at world renowned party Circoloco at DC-10 on July 21st, John Dimas is making his push to the global stage a big one.

Skirting the usual one time Ibiza debut, Dimas has been tapped for an almost unheard of three apperances at DC-10 this summer, meaning he must be doing something right.

Thre Greece native regularly releases on Subb-an& Adam Shelton's One Records, as well as La Vie En Rose, Bass Culture and Dame Music - his brand of Chicago influenced house speaking loud and clear for the newcomer.

So we tapped Dimas for a Fresh Blood mix, which you can check out below.

For those who don’t know, tell us a little about yourself. I’m from Thessaloniki, Greece, but moved to Berlin 2 years ago. I’ve been DJing for some years now, playing from house to techno.

How did you get into electronic music? It all started when i saw Armand Van Helden in my city playing a few years ago. It was my first time being in a party like that with such a good atmosphere and house music all night long.

My brother at that time had some disco records and a normal record player so i started buying and playing some records but just for fun. A few years later in a school project (I studied electronics), I had to build something, so I decided to build a three-channel mixer.

After that, I got my first pair of decks and started mixing at home before becoming resident in a very popular bar in my city. Since then I never stopped doing what I love the most. I’ve also been making my own music since 2008 when I had my first vinyl release.

Three gigs at DC-10 is unusual for anyone's debut in Ibiza. How did that all come about? To be honest, I didn’t expect that! And it makes even me more excited to play there.

Were you shocked or surprised when they offered you three off the bat? It was really a big surprise for me!

Have you ever partied at the club before? Of course I’ve heard about DC10 many times… that it’s a great club and great energy, as lot of friends like Dan, Dyed & Shonky (of Apollonia) have played and partied there. Crazy that I didn’t had the chance to party there yet as I’ve never been to Ibiza, so for the first time let’s do it properly at Circoloco ;).

You recently released 'Hypnotize Me' on Subb-an and Adam Shelton's One Records. How did that come about? Hypnotize me is an old track that Ash  and Adam used to play a lot, so I just refreshed it and we released it with a great Nail remix .

Tell us a bit about your studio setup. Are you an analog lover? I have a basic studio setup, as I love computers I use only that at the moment, but also I’m buying few analog gear. I never used any gear in my music, so when have everything on my list of the hardware I want, a new journey will begin to learn all that and it takes time…but that makes me more excited as is a totally new way of making music .

I understand you also have a live setup. Tell us a bit about that. Yes I do, I played my first live show in Watergate Berlin for a Dame Music label night last year. Since then I only played live three times, twice in Watergate and one in Fabric London. It took me few months to prepare it as I extracted all the parts of my tracks and I mix them on the fly, so every time is different as I always update it with new tracks. I use only my computer an Apc 40 controller and my soundcard.

What else is on your horizon in the coming months? There are few things coming soon , an EP on my friend Stassy’s Taverna Tracks. An EP on Overall Music LTD, a vinyl-only series Overall has started, and a remix on Silver Network among others...

Finally, tell us about your Fresh Blood mix. This is a cut from a vinyl-only session I did with some friends at home… ended up being almost 7 hours of mixing I was on such a nice flow. Moving between some old records and new records. Hope you enjoy!

Leon: ' there is too much garbage being put out currently'

With regular slots at arguably Ibiza's most popular Friday night, Music On, as well as further shows at Paradise and ANTS, Leon is DJ on the rise on the White Isle. Taking his dubbed-out tech house sound to the big stage, Leon certainly knows how to work a crowd. Leon's first release came in 2009 and he has released records on seminal labels such as VIVa Music and Saved Records. The Italian has kindly shared a mix with us and some words on his new vinyl only record label, his proudest moment and food.

First of all, can you tell us about the mix you have provided for us at Pulse Radio. In this mix I have provided tracks I love at the moment. In fact, these are the freshest underground upcoming releases on vinyl. I may be from the old school, but I definitely love this fresh contemporary style, from techno to house. There are tracks on this mix that will be released on my vinyl only label Chelsea Hotel Records.

When did your relationship with dance music start? When I was 14 years old I bought my first vinyl record. My father happened to be a drummer and I was lucky enough to have a dad who could introduce me to old school disco, rock & roll and Motown, from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Were you part of a local Italian music scene in the early days? Yes, I was a part of the local music scene in Teramo, Italy. It was a small scene but we all have to start somewhere.

Which artists have had the biggest influence on the sound of your productions? Mood 2 Swing, Masters at Work, Danny Tenaglia & Ricardo Villalobos…..Other artists that have influenced me are Larry Levan & David Mancuso.

You rank your latest release on Nite Grooves as one of the most important of your career – is this your proudest moment in terms of production? If so, why? Yes, this is one of the proudest moments of my career because it’s an absolute honor to be able to remix an artist of the caliber of Ananda Project. In my opinion, there is too much garbage being put out currently and it’s so refreshing to be able to work with artists like Ananda Project.

You’re a resident at Music On – what has the experience been like so far? This is my 3rd year with Music On and I can honestly say I'm super excited to be a part of one of the most important brands in the world. To me Marco Carola is one of the most important DJs of our time and I'm honored to be part of the Music On family.

You’re playing ANTS presents La Familia at Ushuaia on 16th August – as the party is held outdoors, and in the day, will this influence the music you play? If so, how? Nic Fanciulli is a close friend of mine and I'm very grateful to be a part of this event. Playing during the day will be very different than playing at night and I will be taking the crowd on a less dark and more melodic journey for sure!

ANTS presents La Familia is very different to a party like Music On – were branching out and exploring new avenues musically important in deciding to play at ANTS? I don't think so. I've been friends with Nic a very long time. For me the only difference is playing 2 hours and playing 10 hours. Music On is a night and morning journey. La Familia will be a daytime party at a different place, so different people and different vibe!

The La Familia show is also in conjunction with Cocorico – what do you make of the Italian music scene at the moment? There are some amazing Italian producers that I am supporting at the moment. I am currently signing many of these artists to my label because they deserve to be heard by the rest of the world.

In terms of releases – what can we expect from you in the near future? I have one EP with 2 or 3 tracks on Chelsea Hotel Records vinyl only after the summer, and one EP on London UK label called Novus, and a remix on Italian Moan Rec that’s currently doing very well!

Finally, I noticed a photo of you and Pirupa in the kitchen! Are you secretly chefs as well as DJs? [Laughs] The photo was at a friend's restaurant! I like to eat, my girlfriend is a great cook and Pirupa too, but not me. It was just a funny picture, but good music goes well with good food!

LEON plays for ANTS presents La Familia on Saturday 16th August at Ushuaia Ibiza, and the NoVus Showcase in London at Crucifix Lane August 23rd.

Gateway Drugs Launch New Song "Give Me Your Love"

$

My night started badly, as I am not used to standing in queues, especially since I am on the guestlist. It's Fiction's weekly Tuesday session named Untamed Youth, this installement was particularly exciting as CT Duo Gateway Drugs were launching thier new single "Give Me Your Love"

Once I finally get to the bar, I had to wait another 15 minutes in the bar area/moshpit, which would have been fine if the moochers were hot rockers, but instead I was bumped by young girls.

Once I got close to the stage, though, Mudblud's sounds flushed out any bad thoughts and I was immediately filled with beautiful harmonies and a relaxing bounce. His colorful, happy mixes should be legendary by this stage.

 photo MudbludGD1_zps236ae8aa.jpg

Gateway drugs opened with the track you would've heard at any Cape Town hipster joint in the last few months: "Nightswimming". The Nu-Disco folk allowed themselves to fall into the slow groove and I sensed a kind of relief. There's a great deal of experimental electronic music being pushed at us, which is sometimes just a hair's breadth over the border of the analytical for many people to enjoy dancing to. There's also a lot of hard-edged industry in there too.

In essence, Gateway Drugs is a pop synth group with tendencies towards the sweet side. This seems to be something that Capetonians are grabbing with both hands.

Gateway Drugs even made a little announcement about finding someone to kiss. The singer, David Thorpe has a sweet voice which could be stronger, however it does the trick of conveying something and carrying the music into the realms of the meaningful.

The new track was welcomed and enjoyed with the same open arms as the rest of their set, appealing to their existing fans and no doubt, adding new ones. I look forward to hearing the new album.

 photo GDact4_zps8f48398a.jpg

Tommy Gun took the crowd into its later headier moments with a quicker beat and a couple of neat trick turns.

The launch was a success. The big numbers at the event illustrate that the synth pop trend is coming on fast. Hold onto your disco balls, kids.

Fatboy Slim on 'Ultimate DJ' Show: “We Told Simon Cowell to F*ck Off”

At Electrobeach Festival in France last weekend, Fatboy Slim told Digital Spy that he and a few other DJs were approached by Simon Cowell to be involved with his new DJ talent show, ‘Ultimate DJ,’ which aims to find the next DJ superstar. Fatboy Slim says he has no interest in the new show as he believes that the format won’t translate well to television.

“Simon Cowell was talking about doing a show and everyone in the business, he kind of started approaching us, as we were like ‘F*ck off. No – that’s a terrible idea!’”

“That’s the good thing about dance music; it grows organically through drunk people late at night coming up with stupid ideas. It’s not something that can be scripted or transported into a TV studio.”

“I get offered loads of TV shows and they’re like, ‘Can you perform for five minuted?’ But DJing takes two hours and an audience. It’s not like you can go out there and sing your latest song. Because of that, it will always remain slightly outside the mainstream.”

Music streaming service Spotify partnered with Jacob Jolij, Professor in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Gronigen, have conducted a study looking at how different types of music affect the emotions of listeners, from happiness and sadness to excitement and anger.

The emotional response that certain songs trigger is a combination of a variety of musical factors including the song’s key, tempo, rhythm, and even the lyrics. Here are the songs that elicited the clearest emotional responses:

Happiness – Katy Perry’s “Birthday”

Sadness – OneRepublic’s “Something I Need”

Optimism – American Authors’ “Best Day of My Life”

Anger – David Guetta & Showtek’s “Bad”

Overcoming Fear – Coldplay’s “Magic”

Excitement – Avicii’s “Wake Me Up”

In only a few weeks, more than 100 artists representing all genres of music will touch down in Chicago for the Windy City’s annual Lollapalooza music festival. Starting in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell, the festival ran annually for years before taking a short hiatus. Now, it’s bigger and better than ever consistently bringing some of the world’s most in-demand artists to Chicago’s beautiful Grant Park.

With such an extensive lineup, Lollapalooza 2014 may seem a bit intimidating, but don’t worry; we have you covered. We’ve narrowed down the massive lineup to seven of our top electronic music picks, which we recommend you check out over the weekend.

Above & Beyond
The three-person trance supergroup, who are arguably best seen in a festival setting, are sure to delight their biggest fans at Lollapalooza this year. They are definitely one of the main draws of electronic music fans to the festival and we are confident that they will drop their new hit “Blue Sky Action” during their set.

Cut Copy
After wrapping up a bunch of gigs in the US and before heading to Outside Lands in the Bay Area and embarking on their fall tour, Cut Copy is making a stop in Chicago. The deluxe edition of their new album “Free Your Mind” will be out early next week, just in time for their Lollapalooza performance.

Chromeo
Chromeo has been making the rounds at top festivals like Coachella, Melt!, Electric Daisy Carnival, Primavera Sound, Glastonbury, and Holy Ship, and we know that their gig at Lollapalooza won’t disappoint. Be sure to catch this dynamic duo in action.

Darkside
Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington have wowed audiences around the globe with their Darkside side project for months now. They’ll make the stop at Lollapalooza following an appearance at Splendour in the Grass and before heading off to Way Out West Festival.

Flume
At only 22 years old, Flume has been making waves in the global music scene. The Australian DJ/producer is in the midst of a three-night stint at New York’s Terminal 5. He is currently on his North American tour with upcoming dates in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Burlington, and finally Chicago.

Duke Dumont

Jeff Mills Cuts Set Short At Dour Festival After Fan Hurls Drink On Stage

$

Jeff Mills cut his set short at Dour Festival in Belgium on Friday after a punter hurled a drink at the American techno icon. The news came to light via a facebook post from fellow techno DJ Chris Liebing, whose set was extended by an extra hour after Mills decided to call it quits after just 30 minutes.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Post by Chris Liebing (Official).

So you think that'd be the end of the incident, right? Wrong. Evidently upset by the facebook post, UK jock Dave Clarke took a digital swipe at Liebing, labeling his post as "not a cool thing to say".

"Jeff Mills deserves respect, especially from an artist like yourself, without him your career would not be where it is," said Clarke. "Jeff is one of the few artists that gives me good nervous energy if he is on before me, so to hear your smiley delight that his misfortune garnered you some extra time seriously sucks and is such a strange carniverous attitude from the commited vegan that you are."

Chris Liebing has since responded to Dave Clarke's comments, claiming that his post was misinterpreted and "poorly phrased," and that he in fact respects Mills "very much", labeling Clarke's post and the resulting fan comments as a "shit storm" (read the full post here).

Talk about a storm in a techno teacup, eh?
