Space Ibiza Turns 25

$

A quarter century in the clubbing world is no easy feat. Add to that Space Ibiza’s sustained recognition as one of the world’s best clubs, and it’s easy to realise how special the place really is.

Seeing as it was a special occasion and we were being treated, I arrived early to catch some of the artists out playing on the huge outdoor stage. This usually only happens twice a season, for the opening and the closing, so it wasn’t something I was going to miss.

I arrived to the pumping sounds of German house head Tiefschwarz, and the ubiquitous DJ Koze remix of Moderat’s ‘Bad Kingdom’, in particular. The track has been seen some heavy airplay from all corners this season, and when the razor-like bass line kicks in it truly has a powerful impact on the dance floor.

Tiefschwarz then made way for the veteran duo, Layo & Bushwacka. The experienced pair proceeded to pummel their way through some heavy duty tech-house, as if it was peak-time, really pushing the swelling crowd as the golden sunset began to disperse over the mass of bodies.

After taking a short break to view a certain momentous game of football in Brazil, I returned to Detroit legend Carl Craig laying down some taut four-to-the-floor cuts. As the set came to a close, Carl dropped Floorplan’s ‘Never Grow Old’, with its soaring soulful vocal stirring up a feverish swell of dance floor emotion.

Carl left the decks with an array of dancers up on stage, birthday balloons floating, performers on stilts making their way through the crowd and an explosion of shimmering confetti covering us all.

Space’s owner, Pepe Rosello, then appeared on stage to address the now packed crowd, with everyone handed sparklers, he sang happy birthday and launched into encore including John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’. It was here that I felt the true spirit of Ibiza, the carefree uplifting atmosphere pervasive throughout this band of Ibiza revellers.

After the hugely uplifting finale, it was time to get lost inside, the energy buzz spurring me on to another nocturnal adventure within the walls of this hallowed Ibiza clubbing mecca we call Space. This wasn’t before a frantic dash behind the scenes to have a quick chat to the legend himself, Carl Craig, however. Read it here.

I headed over to the Terrace to catch Jimmy Edgar and the vibrant atmosphere inside instilled unlimited amounts of energy and enthusiasm amongst the party-goers. The Terrace was amongst the busiest times I’ve seen it so far this season, and that amount of people in one room ensures peak time fireworks. Edgar rifled through frantic Detroit style offerings, providing rugged aggressive percussion by the bucket load – perfect for spicing proceedings up.

The Discoteca saw Nina Kraviz engaging the crowd with hard dark techno before making way for the surprise act of the night, 2manydjs. As the lasers poured across the room, the sweaty pack of party goers continued to move wildly with an abundance of arms-aloft moments served up by the Belgians. The most striking thing about 2manydjs is the way they aggressively seize your attention and maintain a grip on your senses throughout the set with unexpected and fun reworks of tracks from all over the musical spectrum.

The Belgian pair have an undeniably unique style, melding huge hits from outside the dance floor such as MGMT’s ‘Kids’ and David Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’, with their brand of heavy electro-style dance music. By playing these sing-along anthems they manage to connect the crowd in an enthralling way.

Following up in the Discoteca was Fatboy Slim– a man who you can guarantee to attract huge hoards of wild fans. Full of energy as ever (and sporting the bare foot look) – Norman Cook pays particular attention to the art of the enormous drop. Flying through his set at breakneck speed, there was the perpetual sense that another big blast of bass was going to be fired into the raucous melee, and as always, he flirted with his huge hits such as ‘Praise You’, taking delight in the crowd’s huge reaction every time they heard one of these famous snippets.

Back over on the Terrace the packed room kept the buzz in the air as Tensnake subsequently stepped up. For the rest of the evening the Terrace was all about the accessible pop side of house music, with Tensnake serving up plenty of recognisable house tracks that combined bouncing bass lines with sweet melodies, and of course, his huge hit ‘Coma Cat’, he won’t go anywhere without playing that one.

Continuing to run with this musical theme was the UK chart-house sensation Route 94 playing back-to-back with the larger-than-life Skream. Again the pair trod the path between pop-style house music of the day and some more underground offerings, such as the sturdy ‘90s house stomp of ‘Jungle Line’ by Sundowners and Mystic Bill – all of which did the trick in keeping the heaving dance floor more than happy.

The most intriguing set of the night was Erick Morillo’s exclusive four hour set on the Terrace. The Terrace had been rammed from the beginning of the night and by this time there was no sign of letting up, the party-goers were even more amped up after the previous few hours of high-energy house music had truly got bodies moving.

Morillo was taking people on a journey through all corners of house music, from the rolling tech-house that is ever-present on the White Isle, to jacking vocal oriented cuts, through to dark contemporary tracks such as ‘So High’ by Hot Since 82. The set built towards a huge crescendo consisting of head-down grooves, huge tense build-ups and the frequent icy chill of CO2 cannons blasting down your neck – the mood was infectious to say the least.

As Morillo took things deeper in the early hours of the morning, it was time to head home.

On leaving, the overriding feeling was one of energy. The pervasive celebratory party spirit of Ibiza had been encapsulated, and the music almost became secondary to that hedonistic spirit. Happy birthday Space.

Day 3 of The Hudson Project Cancelled

Due to severe weather, organizers decided to cancel the third day of The Hudson Project this weekend. Guests were originally told to return to their cars for a delay in the day’s schedule until the majority of the day was eventually cancelled. Artists Bassnectar, Tipper, Oliver, Kygo, Paper Diamon, and more were unable to perform their sets.

Reports on social media indicate that conditions at the festival were far from ideal with invasive security and lots of mud everywhere. The situation apparently got much worse once the storms started and vendors shut down, cars were stuck trying to leave, and people were allegedly forced to leave the venue while intoxicated (contrary to what the festival posted on its Facebook page) leading to a spike in arrests.

The Hudson Project ran this weekend from July 11th to July 13th for the first time ever. The festival has not yet announced any plans for refunds based on the cancellation, but has promised more information for attendees in the coming week.  We're hoping that everyone gets out safely!

Carl Craig: 'Everyone hyped it up as being coke city'

As part of Space Ibiza's 25th anniversary celebrations, we had the opportunity to catch a few quick words with Detroit legend, Carl Craig, moments after his hour-long set closed the proceedings on Space's outdoor stage.

Feeling suitably hyped up after watching Carl's set, I waited in the backroom office at Space. I tend to try to keep things cool, but this time I was feeling the nervous excitement of meeting a true dance music luminary. After a few minutes, Carl Craig strolled in, complete in snakeskin trousers, slik, black Velcro hit-tops, and a black vest, somehow pulling it off with ease. The great man then sat himself down beside me for our short yet inspired chat about the White Isle - taking in Flower Power, drugs and Orson Welles.

How was the set? Yeah it was great – short and sweet.

So your hometown, Detroit, and Berlin have given us techno, the UK gave us the rave scene and club culture – what’s the legacy of Ibiza? To tell you the truth, the legacy of Ibiza was the last three songs – ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ (Pink Floyd), ‘Age of Aquarius’ (5th Dimension), and ‘Imagine’ (John Lennon). That’s really the legacy of Ibiza. For me, those last three songs really put everything into perspective for me, for what Ibiza should be. It’s not just about playing linear music and music that fits the crowd. It’s music that has not only meaning, but is spiritual as well.

Do you think Ibiza still has that spiritual, hedonistic, rebellious spirit then? Yeah, the club night I’ve always wanted to go to and still haven’t gone to is Flower Power. I think I got a good dose of Flower Power from those last 15 minutes. How often do you see a 75 year old man picking the last three songs of the night?

In my opinion they probably had more of an impact than the whole day because it’s something that’s a total change from what people know Space as being, and it really shows what the reality of Ibiza is.

There’s a movie, I can’t remember what it’s called (‘F for Fake’), but Orson Welles was here and did this movie about this painting forger, and it’s quite incredible to watch because it’s Ibiza in the ‘70s.

Him telling the story, him following this guy around, and it’s just quite incredible – something totally different than I have ever experienced in DC-10, Pacha, Space or anywhere else. Again, the last 15 minutes really put everything in perspective for me.

So when did you first start playing in Ibiza? I came late, maybe six years ago. I was asked a lot to come in the ‘90s and I didn’t do drugs, so I didn’t come.

Everyone hyped it up as being coke city or you go to get high or whatever. That’s not what my music was about so it wasn’t really something that appealed to me until a bit later. I think my first time was for We Love…

Have you seen much change since you started playing? Yeah, of course it’s changed – when I came, Sven ruled the island. Now it’s really changed in the sense of what we’re seeing with EDM. In the sense of techno, Marco (Carola) and Richie (Hawtin) – those are the cats. But there’s so much other stuff that’s happening than when I first came. I can’t necessarily say that it’s greater, but it’s definitely not worse.

Obviously we’re here for the 25th anniversary of Space – what’s your relationship been like with the club over the years? It was the first club that I came to. You can love all your children equally, but there’s something about your first child. There’s a connection that you won’t have with the others. That’s the same thing here.

I first came to Space and there’s a connection I have with Space that’s totally different to the connection I have with Amnesia, DC-10, Pacha or Booom or any of the other stuff.

Carl Craig's remix of Vince Watson's "It's Not Over" is out now on Planet E. He'll be playing Cocoon at Amnesia on 4 August, and returning to We Love... at Space Ibiza on 17 August.

deadmau5 & Armin van Buuren Fight on Twitter

It was once rumored that deadmau5 and Armin van Buuren were working together in the studio. The collaboration was later proclaimed dead but hasn’t stopped the two from finding themselves in a Twitter war this weekend. The mau5 fired shots when he tweeted that “ASOT is about as much “trance” as Nelson Mandela is indie punk."

Armin responded with “why don’t you come and play #ASOT700 and show us what “trance” is? Or backing out again?” It all escalated from there with deadmau5 going on a rant about how the genre has changed over the years and how he prefers the earlier days.

Binary Finary joined the conversation after deadmau5 called them out (“Trance died in the late ‘90s. Thanks a lot binary finary.”). The British trance group challenged him to make his own “140 bpm Uplifting Trance” track if he's so unhappy with the music out there these days.

He pauses the music to share his “secret” – that he’s been working on the electronic music album – and the crowd goes crazy. “I love music and I feel like I can do anything when it comes to music because I am music.” Check out a video of the announcement below.

Pendulum Likely To Drop New Album In 2015

As one of Australia’s biggest bass exports, we were all sad to see Pendulum take a hiatus in 2012 after their global success and explosive live shows. However, that void has been partly filled with Pendulum’s Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen prioritising their rambunctious Knife Party project. Still, with rumours swirling all throughout 2013 of another Pendulum album, we have now been given our most solid news yet – that a Pendulum album is likely to arrive in early 2015.

In tweets that have since been deleted, Swire said that “Pend work begins around September, probably released early next year.” Meanwhile, Knife Party are also set to release their 'Abandon Ship' album in the near future. Swire is keeping busy.

Let’s all hum ‘The Island’ in anticipation.

Deadmau5 On DJ Mag Top 100: "Just Get It Over With And Put Paris Hilton In The Top 3"

The DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll and Deadmau5; two things that regularly court controversy. So it was really only a matter of time until they converged controversially.

Joel Zimmerman recently took to his twitter account (when is he not tweeting?) to express his distaste for for the annual poll (of which voting for 2014 is now open), despite taking out the #12 spot last year.

"I can't believe people still care for this," posted Zimmerman, before following up with: "Just get it over with and put paris hilton in the top 3 already and be done with it."

Does the Mau5 really not give a shit about the poll, or is this a clever ploy to remind his fans to vote for him? Either way, it's a hell of a lot more interesting than those cringey "Vote For Me" e-banners superstar DJs get made up.

Barcelona to Ibiza: mobilee Pool Session at Santos Ibiza In Review

$

0

We headed down to another great free party to get your teeth stuck into, this time the Barcelona rooftop party turned Ibiza fortnight poolside bash, mobilee Pool Sessions at Santos Ibiza.

Mobilee have been steadily making quite a name for themselves over the years, and the label is now renowned as a source for high-quality house and techno. As well as the high-grade music they release, mobilee also pay careful attention to nurturing a group of talented artists as part of the mobilee family.

Held in Playa d’en Bossa’s Santos hotel, the location proved to fit the atmosphere of the party perfectly – the clean white aesthetic gives the place an air of luxury, coupled with an ideally relaxed vibe from the off.

After mobilee newcomer Igor Vicente expertly warmed things up as party goers relaxed on lounges and and ate their lunches, I grabbed a cocktail from the bar and listened to William Kouam Djoko guide us through a variety of house cuts, from warm chilled vibes such as DJ Koze’s remix of ‘Made To Stray’ by Mount Kimbie to more jacking selections such as Boris Werner’s ‘Acid Casino’ – everything was ideally suited to the sun-kissed surroundings.

Frenchman Rodriguez Jr. was the next member of the mobilee family to guide our poolside soundtrack, and he did so very impressively. Utilising equipment such as Maschine and an iPad to great effect, Rodriguez Jr. also add that extra bit of interest with his nifty finger work on the keyboard – I’m always a sucker for witnessing some great musicianship.

With a lovely floating vibe, he took us through an array of hot selections, one of the real stand-outs being his recent release ‘Persistence of Vision’. The track combined an ideal amalgam of elegant pads, an infectious bass line and ethereal vocals – the track summed up the party’s feeling perfectly.

As the sun began to set, mobilee boss Anja Schneider adjusted the mood accordingly, delivering some darker tracks. Obviously, as night falls, things tend to heat up a bit in terms of people’s activity, so selections such as El Mundo’s ‘Diva’ steered proceedings towards the dance floor and drew more people into bouncing in front of the booth. Anja effortlessly enticed the party-goers into dancing by the pool and the night changed gear, with the enthusiastic crowd creating new waves of energy.

Creating the right spirit within a party is so crucial, and here the mobilee crew hit the nail on the head. The atmosphere was relaxed and the venue was ideally intimate, allowing the positive energy to rub off on you very quickly – the perfect fusion between party spirit and high quality music.

With Anja Schneider going from strength to strength right now, with a new EP showcasing her incredibly versatile style, along with several big projects on the horizon, the German is set to affirm her name on the scene even more. Add to this the strong core family at mobilee, ensuring some great guests at Santos for each party, and it seems certain the mobilee Pool Sessions will grow nicely over the summer.

It’s free, the location is perfect and the music is spot on – you'd be silly not to check it out.
