Konstruktiv

7/10

Konstruktiv's latest is proof once more that you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

So, in spite of some, how should we put this...'interesting' artwork, the package as a whole is a veritable delight of fascinating techno sounds that are really at odds with the space-aged, almost childish, Pokemon-esque drawings that accompany it.

It all arrives from the dab hand that is the label owner, Russian producer Rekord 61. Again, he plumps for two originals of his own as well as a remix by an admittedly better known producer - a way of working that continues to pay dividends.

Lead track 'Vostok' in an acid led monster, as it merges old-school capabilities with a dose of modern-day suspense. In all, it's sure to keep you enthralled throughout.

'Razbeg' is another tidy number. Nimble in stature, it soon comes to life courtesy of its relentless use of the 909, while the pronounced drums only add to the sumptuously produced modern-day techno for the heads.

On a remix tip, British ex-pat Spencer Parker remixes 'Vostok' into a slightly friendlier arrangement, as the generous chords give it a house aesthetic that fortunately doesn't bow to generic tech-house principles.

DVS1 - Klockworks 13 EP

DVS1
Klockworks 13
Klockworks

8/10

You’d be forgiven for thinking DVS1 was one of the many producers holed up in a dark corner of Berlin, feeding off the gritty landscape to produce the rawest of techno tracks.

DVS1 actually hails from Minneapolis, in America’s Midwest, and the European characteristics of his production are most certainly indebted to his vast record collection and musical knowledge.

With Klockworks 13, DVS1 presents three straight-up techno tracks forged in urban decay. Minimalism is a running theme throughout the EP, as DVS1 pays particular attention to allowing certain loops to stand out, whilst other factors work around them, proping up the framework.

Opener ‘Black Russian’ is all about warm piano chords that loop and filter, waxing and waning in intensity, whilst the sparse percussion expertly drives the track. Whilst techno often has an innate darkness, ‘Black Russian’ also conjures a lot of light – it would be just as at home being played outdoors at sun rise as it would in raw industrial surroundings.

‘Creepin’, however, blocks out any slithers of light that were seeping in. This one is a sinister affair - frantic scuttling percussion interplaying with the eerie looped stabs to create shadowy music. The tension is manipulated perfectly as the track builds towards subtle crescendos before being shrouded in deep atmosphere again.

Finally, with ‘Spying’ DVS1 delivers another slice of techno that would sit right at home in the likes of Berghain. Again, DVS1 intelligently crafts his music with a considered and subtle approach. ‘Spying’ centres around high pitched chimes, which create tension with the persistence of a horror film’s sound track.

The tracks possess a minimalistic aesthetic, yet an abundance of powerful mood and atmosphere, which takes a great level of skill to create. DVS1 is highly regarded amongst the techno community and with his production prowess and on this evidence the American has further reinforced his reputation.

Vinyl’s Upward Surge Continues

Nielsen Soundscan released its annual mid-year report last week making some interesting observations about the record industry. Not that surprisingly, album sales have decreased by 14.9 percent In the last year. In contrast, vinyl sales have continued to surge, with sales increasing by 40% to 4 million units in the same period of time.

On the other hand, on-demand streaming from services like Spotify was up 42%, roughly the same rate as vinyl sales even though the two are vastly different. It’s good news for vinyl enthusiasts! You may remember when North America's  biggest vinyl factory had to invest in a new warehouse with 16 presses just to keep up with the growing demand.

Alle Farben Mixes Pulse.181

German DJ and producer Frans Zimmer, AKA Alle Farben, has stepped up for this week's podcast, Pulse.181.

Whilst he might be a household name in his hometown of Berlin and across Europe, Farben is only just now becoming recognised internationally for his original productions. But with the release of a handful of EPs over the past two years which has culminated in a debut album, 'Synesthesia - I Think In Colours', which is due to drop worldwide later this year, his star is set to explode.

After being blown away by Farben's 'Winterheart Blue' mix this year (which took out the #6 spot in our 30 Best Mixes Of 2014 So Far) we had to snap him up for a Pulse podcast. Enjoy.

DOWNLOAD PULSE.181 HERE

Pulse: Can you tell us a bit about the mix you've recorded for your podcast? How did you decide to approach it? Alle Farben: I get a couple of gigabytes per week from labels and artists with their promos and unreleased tracks. Also I am buying a lot of music on Beatport. So when it comes to a new mix, I have to pick a smooth selection of music that is new, but also recognisable. I consider myself as a kind of director that decides which pictures and scenes I want to present to the viewer. My mixes are always a journey that people can enjoy whilst being at home, in the car or at work. So I am inviting my listeners to be a traveler on my musical journey. For this mix, I decided to start off with an unreleased new remix that I made for one of my favourite German Indie bands called Hundreds from Hamburg. I also wanted to play some of the tracks from my debut album 'Synesthesia' and I end the set with the album's title track.

The album was released last month. Have you always had ambitions top produce a pop album? First of all, the album has been released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in May, the rest of the world follows a little later this summer. In the first place, I did not have the ambition to produce a pop album. But as we were working on the album, and as more and more tracks had a rough structure and the first vocalist joined the writing, we had a clear idea of the sound the album should represent. And so it came to this melodic house sound, which I prefer to call it.

The video for 'She Moves' is visually stunning. How did it come to be? When we released the first 'street video' for 'She Moves' we just wanted to have some Berlin-inspired shots synched with the music. So we started searching for a director/producer who understood the idea of the song to shoot a video - something which is not dull or uninspired. Franck Trebillac came up with this great idea of doing a Wes Anderson style video, and so we went to London to shoot the video with him.

What's on the agenda for the remainder of 2014? I am going to the US for the first time this summer (NYC & LA) and I am also celebrating NYE with a couple of gigs in Australia. Now that the 'She Moves' EP has dropped, I am really looking forward to finally releasing 'Synesthesia' to the rest of the world later this summer. And not to mention all the European festivals that I’ll be playing this summer; Melt!, Berlin Festival, Tomorrowland, Urban Art Forms Festival, Dockville Festival and Nature One.

No Sniffer Dogs At Splendour In The Grass, Plead Art vs Science

Dan McNamee of Aussie trio Art vs Science has written an email to Ballina MP Don Page, pleading for sniffer dogs to not be used at this year's Splendour In The Grass festival.

McNamee shared his passionate email via his band's facebook page today, which urges his councilman to trial this year's Splendour In The Grass North Byron Parklands as sniffer dog free event, arguing that their presence only leads to panic-induced overdoses. McNamee believes sniffer dogs increases the amount of hospitalisations.

"Automatically you will cut out the number of hospitalisations due to people panicking upon sight of the dogs and ingesting their whole weekend’s supply of drugs," writes McNamee. "This actually led to the deaths of a young woman at the Perth Big Day Out 2009 and a young man at a festival called Defqon 1 in Sydney’s West last year."

Read his full email below.

Dear Mr Page,

My name is Daniel McNamee and I play in the music group “Art vs Science”. We’ve been lucky enough to play at Splendour in the Grass 4 times since 2008, and are playing again this year.

I’m sure you have witnessed the increase in illicit drug use in young people – I’m 30 and even in my lifetime I’ve seen the use of “ecstasy” (MDMA) in particular increase from a fringe activity practiced by underground party-goers to something widespread and done by accountants, lawyers, doctors, university students – people of all walks of life.

I think we can both agree that it is a dangerous activity, made all the more so by the manner in which it is produced, procured, and ingested. I have seen this first hand. People being led out of the festival to ambulances, eyes rolling in their heads. Concerned and panicking friends following and being told to try to relax. It’s a horrid sight. This tragedy is all the more tragic because these people are often inexperienced drug users who might wait all year to go to one or two music festivals and ingest these substances there.

I believe the you have the unique opportunity with the upcoming festival to help pass a bill which will trial measures that will, I’m certain, reduce dangerous drug taking practices which lead to these horrible situations.

I urge you to consider a trial whereby the common practice of police officers using drug detection dogs is suspended at this year’s festival, and to compare the amount of hospitalisations that occur.

Please let evidence inform this policy. Automatically you will cut out the number of hospitalisations due to people panicking upon sight of the dogs and ingesting their whole weekend’s supply of drugs. This actually led to the deaths of a young woman at the Perth Big Day Out 2009 and a young man at a festival called Defqon 1 in Sydney’s West last year.

A police presence which focusses on stopping truly anti social behaviour – violence and aggression is all that is needed. People who are allowed to ingest drugs without the fear of a lifetime criminal record will have a new fear: the drug itself. Drug taking is dangerous. The correct dosage, setting, and friend support is vital. Let this be the only thing that people are worried about.

There is a common sentiment in NSW public life that allowing drug taking at festivals would be “an admission of defeat”. It does not have to be this way. We need only look at the data, and take advice from good sources like the 2006 NSW Ombudsman’s Report (attached) and the Australia21 reports on the issue (also attached, should you wish to research the matter further). I personally think it would be wonderful if we enjoyed music and socialised without drugs – alcohol included – but we cannot change people’s minds about drugs through fear alone. The record shows. It doesn’t work. But it does make the setting so much more dangerous for our children.

Best regards,
Dan McNamee

German ‘feel good tech house’ duo Super Flu will play this coming Sunday night at Revolver for the next instalment of Tomorrow Never Comes.

For just under a decade the duo known as Super Flu have turned the dance scene upside down with their quirky take on the tech house genre, and their productions have found home on labels like Monaberry, Hertzblut, KarateKlub, Traum Schallplatten and more. October last year they released their third album 'Halle Saale' which featured 10 tracks of pure dance floor madness and won them plaudits from far and wide.

With seven sold out shows to date at venues like Brown Alley, Prince Bandroom and Revolver, it really is no stretch to conclude that TNC have situated itself as one of the premier club nights in Melbourne. Part of TNC success can be attributed to having some of Melbourne’s finest resident DJs in Boogs, Silversix and Jacob Malmo on board, all who have played their part in creating a hugely successful brand. Super Flu is a perfect fit for Tomorrow Never Comes and they follow on hugely TNC successful events which featured Booka Shade, Tube & Berger, Huxley and Robosonic to name a few.

Oliver Huntemann's Top 5 Tips For Aspiring DJs

$
0
0

After more than 30 years in the DJ game, countless mix compilations and tours across the globe, if there's anyone who is qualified to give advice on how to become a successful DJ, it's Oliver Huntemann. Here are five nuggets of gold from the German techno stalwart.

 photo blackline2_zps37b5f386.jpg

1. Start with the basics

There's a wide choice of hard and software in the DJ market. Plenty of tools, all promising to give you better “skills” and make your crowd rock. The reality is that most of the tools and software are fairly similar and you don't really need them in the beginning. Starting with a sync function doesn't train your ears and feeling and won't help you when your laptop crashes in the middle of a night.

The best advice I can give to aspiring DJs is to pick a very simple set-up and focus on the music and dramaturgy of your set. Two CD players or turntables, a mixer with basic EQs and maybe a few effects - reverb, delay, echo, that's more than enough. If you can make your set sound really good with this set up, you're on the best way to develop your skills and take the next step.

2. Follow your heart

There’s always a trend going on but if you play what everyone else is playing, how will you stand out from the crowd? To build a reputation as a DJ you need to focus on doing things in your own special way. It's about the music you play and how you play it. Try to stand out and follow your gut instinct, that's 80% of the battle.

3. Play all night long

A very good way to learn about DJing is to play long sets. May it be in a bar, at a birthday party, at home with some friends, wherever. These nights teach you a lot about the full range of DJing. How to start a night, how to build it up, how to keep the energy and crowd during peak-time and how to finish it. Playing a ninety minute peak-time-set with twenty tracks you know by heart doesn't make you learn. It's the unexpected that grows your skills and experience.

 photo HUNTY_zps7f2c95f6.jpg

4. Know your role

Know your role according to your set time. If you're an opening act, play an opening set. Don't try to be a headliner when the club has just opened. Raise the drama slowly, let the people get into the mood. You won't get anyone on the dancefloor by playing harder and harder. I would recommend not to play the headliner's new single as a last track before you pass on. Maybe the headliner likes to play it himself. If you do your job well, people will call you back because they know you are dependable. One day, you might become that headliner DJ.

5. Establish yourself

You need to see yourself as more than just a DJ. It's not enough to play good music nowadays and be a talented DJ. We have a global demand of people, that dream about being able to make a living by DJing. You need to see yourself as a bit as a product. When people buy a product, they want to know what they're getting and that they're getting what they paid for. Decide what you're going to offer and do it well. If you do so, people such as promoters, other DJs and last but not least the clubbers, who share your taste, will become interested.
