Carl Cox shows us how it’s done on his most recent trip to the DJsounds Show with Dan Tait. He plays a special hour-long mix giving dance music fans an up-close look at what he’s doing behind the decks. The camera simultaneously shows the legend himself as well as his four CDJs and RMX-1000.

Cox was chosen and returned for the show’s 20th anniversary to play a set of classic tunes, and he answered a few of the host’s questions before starting to play. He tells Tait, “I’ve got so many great classics to play. I’m going to dive into my record box and see what comes out. I’ll mix them in freestyle.” Enjoy the master at work!

Beatport Inks Three-Year Deal with Warped Tour

0

EDM has been maneuvering itself into non-EDM specific events more and more recently. The latest move from SFX Entertainment’s Beatport is a partnership with pop-punk traveling festival Warped Tour. The two have just signed a three-year deal which will see Beatport play a bigger role in future editions of Warped Tour.

Beatport has already had a presence at Warped Tour in the past with a festival tent, which make sense because former From First to Last lead singer Sonny “Skrillex” Moore has since become a driving force in the EDM community.

Since being acquired by media conglomerate SFX Entertainment, Beatport has gone through a series of restructurings. It makes sense that SFX would want to better define its partnership with Warped Tour moving forward because of the new oversight as a result of the acquisition.

Tomorrowland’s Wristbands Can Make Friends “Facebook Official”

From cashless payment systems at festivals like Mysteryland USA to seemingly instant entry to events around the world, wristband technology is always evolving and improving the festival experience. Now, festival goers at the upcoming Tomorrowland in Belgium will be able to quickly add new friends on Facebook using their bands.

Everyone has met someone on the dancefloor only to lose that person seconds later in the audience. ID&T’s flagship festival Tomorrowland is hoping to avoid missed connections like this using new technology. Everyone at the festival receives a “treasure case” containing a wristband that is then activated with your personal information. At the festival, new friends can make things official with the heart-shaped button.  See how it all works in the video below.

Tomorrowland expanded to two weekends this year – July 18th to July 20th and July 25th to July 27th – for the first time in its history, and sold out in record time.

Dutch design company Yalp has just introduced a DJ booth for the people with the Fono.

With only a smartphone and a few tracks, anyone can wirelessly connect to the Fono, which is solar powered and allows you to mix, cue, and use effects, all on gear that can be placed anywhere.

The creators say they're aiming the Fono toward younger users "to get a chance to get creative with music, to share the music, to inspire each other."

Unfortunately, there is no beat matching or EQ. Instead, users can automatically sync tracks, and use effects like loop, delay, crush, scratch, and filter.

For more info, head to the Fono website.

S.A.S.H Says Farewell To Flyover Bar This Sunday

Just over six months since the closure of The Abercrombie which saw S.A.S.H move into its new digs at Flyover Bar, Sydney's favourite Sunday party has announced it's uprooting once again, but not before throwing a big 'ole farewell party this Sunday.

Licensing restictions have been cited as the reason behind S.A.S.H leaving Flyover, with the party having been forced off the outdoor terrace to inside the venue in recent weeks. Promoters have confirmed a new "special" venue which will be announced soon.

Until then, you can give a big, fat, wet kiss goodbye to Flyover this Sunday with an epic closing party featuring Charades, Jaded, Pippa Dalton, Gerrit Oliver, and a special three hour B2B set from Gabby and one half of S.A.S.H, Matt Weir.

How Much Did Coachella Promoters Make This Year?

0
0

Festivals are widely considered one of the toughest businesses to succeed in, but not for promoters of the highly lucrative US event Coachella which this year set an all-time record for gross ticket sales, reports Billboard.

Just how much cash are we talking here? Oh, just a cool $78 million earned across both weekends in 2014 with sold-out attendances totaling 579,000. The $78 million gross was $11 million higher than last year’s $67.2 million and is the third year in a row that the festival has set an all-time record for gross ticket sales since it expanded to two consecutive weekends with identical lineups back in 2012.

Among the big names that performed at the festival this year such as Outkast, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Pharrell, Lorde and Skrillex, were a long list of cutting edge house DJs such as Hot Since 82, Davide Squillace, Nina Kraviz, Dixon, Maceo Plex, Solomun and more, proving that house music is beginning to give EDM and rock a run for their money in America.

Spring Fiesta 2014 Phase 2 Line Up

Tini Returns to Fuse: In Review

0
0

FUSE at Sankeys Ibiza is one of the parties proudly standing alone in Ibiza.

It really bucks the trend for the White Isle in terms of staying true to the underground quality that the FUSE residents represent, an ethos that some club nights daren’t attempt.

Big names at FUSE are always a special added surprise, so I was feeling particularly excited about the prospect of seeing both Martin Buttrich and tINI at last night’s party.

As always with FUSE, members of the core family are showcased – this time Ittetsu and Luke Miskelly were warming proceedings up nicely from the start, laying out the dark groovy minimalist beats that typify the sound of FUSE.

It was then time for the boss man Enzo Siragusa to offer up his selection of records. Playing a whole host of quality vinyl, Enzo kept the mood very deep. It was quite a mellow set – probably the mellowest I’ve heard from him out here.

Out of everyone connected to FUSE it is certainly Enzo who has the most distinct sound, epitomised by the chunky bass lines that rumble out of Sankeys’ Void sound system and weaving intricate percussion. It was only with the last couple of tunes towards the end of the hour’s set that he stepped things up a notch and set things up for Martin Buttrich perfectly.

The Desolat co-boss is an artist that commands respect, having been at the very core of house and techno for a number of years now. Martin Buttrich provided his own spin on the night’s musical selections, taking the sonic journey through some deep-rooted techno tracks with progressive elements.

The German used swathes of reverb and delay effects to build up the peaks and troughs of the set. Each track held its own burning intensity that contributed to the set’s gripping and subtly explosive nature. Buttrich contributed something slightly different to the sound of the evening, yet slotted alongside his contemporaries with ease.

Subtly is a theme that ran throughout the night – with subtle changes of pace subconsciously working the crowd, the sparse red glow of Sankeys’ strip lighting and the minimalistic aesthetic of the music which manages to pack one hell of a punch thanks to the way each of the artists expertly crafted their sets.

Throughout the evening anticipation was growing ever stronger for tINI, and by the time she hit the decks at 4.30am the club seemed to be at its busiest all night. The electric atmosphere penetrated all corners of the room and Sankeys’ Basement became the perfect venue as all the right elements fused to create a forceful synergy between the club, the crowd and the music. These three elements working together are essential in creating clubbing magic.

We were taken into ultra-stripped back mode, with the lighting kept to a distinct minimum as tINI broke into her stride with the characteristic dark thump of her selections. After thoroughly enjoying her set at the tINI & The Gang opening, I was particularly excited to see her in an intense club environment.

On the beach she showed a mellow and atmospheric side whilst the dark and raw edge was underlying throughout. In the Basement, tINI was unleashing more of that raw edge than I expected, which turned out to be gripping dance floor fare, complemented by the hot red glow cutting through the darkness.

Couple these elements with the aura that tINI possesses and the recipe for an exceptional night is complete. FUSE was dependable as ever and I can’t wait to see tINI again already.

Buy tickets to next week's FUSE at Sankeys Ibiza with Sonja Moonear, Enzo Siragusa, Seb Zito and Lee Rands here.

Dillon Francis Goes Deep on BBC Mix as DJ Hanzel

While we wait for his forthcoming album ‘Money Sucks, Friends Rule,’ Dillon Francis has been keeping us entertained over the weekend with his recent mix as his hilarious German alias DJ Hanzel for Annie Nightingale’s BBC Radio 1 show. True to form, DJ Hanzel goes “one deeper” despite being limited by his time slot. “I wanted six hours, but they only gave me 30 minutes.”

While he may be slightly mocking deep house fans, Francis has found a way to branch out of his trap/electro sound and maybe even expose some of them to new subgenres of electronic music. If you’re not familiar with Francis’ DJ Hanzel alter ego, check out the video below.

Ex-Porn Star Sasha Grey Is Now An EDM DJ

0
0

The term 'everybody's a DJ' is reaching a whole new level. This past week alone we've discovered that ex-pro basketballer Shaquille O’Neal recently took the decks in Vegas and Hollywood actor Elijah Wood DJ'd at a Fantasy Con Convention. Who's next? Ex-pornstar Sasha Grey.

We've known about Grey's move into the electronic music world for some time now, though. Back in 2011 she quit the porn industry to focus all her energy on her band, the dark ambient and death-dub outfit aTelecine which had some degree of underground success playing Poland's Unsound festival in 2012 alongside the likes of Shackleton, Ben Frost, Kuedo and Cooly G.

Though it appears that Grey has left the experimental scene behind to focus on becoming a DJ after quitting the band in July last year. So what kind of music does an American ex-porn star-cum-DJ spin? EDM, naturally. Yep, Grey's most recent mix from March - a collab with another DJ called A-Cup - is full of high-voltage, big room electro tracks, though is titled a "Progressive Mix" (not sure about that one).

You can stream or download Sasha Grey's mix below. The burning question is: Are we going to start seeing this celebrity DJ on the professional circuit? Perhaps Paris Hilton could invite Sasha to play her upcoming Foam & Diamonds party in Ibiza. They could compare, ahem, techniques.
