Listen: Nile Rodgers' New Track “Do What You Wanna Do”

Nile Rodgers recorded “Do What You Wanna Do” last summer at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, and it was chosen as this year’s official IMS anthem. The disco-inspired, infectious track marks the dance music pioneer's first new solo track of the decade, as he has spent his time working with artists like Daft Punk, Avicii, Tensnake, and Disclosure.

Rodgers auctioned the song off to benefit his We Are Family charity, and Cr2 Records placed the winning bid. The single is scheduled for a digital release next month on August 10th to celebrate the New York-based label’s tenth anniversary. The release also features remixes by Rob Da Bank, MK, and Eats Everything.

Cr2 boss Mark Brown tells Rolling Stone, “I’ve been a big fan of Chic and Nile since a very young age, and it was just a cool project to be involved with. Initially when we signed the record, there weren’t any verses in the track – it was just kind of Nile’s hook – so we worked with him to develop some extra verses and make it into a complete song.”

Diplo Announces Incoming Track With Madonna Titled ‘Bitch, I’m Madonna’

Diplo has worked with basically everyone in the music industry, so it should come as no surprise that the Major Lazor/Mad Decent head has recently collaborated with Madonna. In an attempt to stay relevant to younger generations, Madonna has been delving with today’s dance producers more frequently – Avicii is producing tracks on her next album, and rumours of a collaboration with Disclosure are in full swing after photos of the Brit duo and the Queen of Pop appeared online. Now, Diplo has confirmed that he wrote seven songs with Madonna in an interview with Heloisa Tolipan:

“I met Madonna because of her kids and then she invited me to a party. We ended up writing seven songs together. I do not usually feel pressured to write hits, but when it’s an artist of this caliber, it’s obvious that I want to push the boundaries a little bit further and surpass myself. One of the songs we wrote is very cool and is called “Bitch, I’m Madonna.”

Diplo further stated that he and Sia wrote an unreleased track for Beyonce titled ‘Pound’. He wants to write a song with Gwen Stefani, which we’d be keen to hear after Major Lazer produced No Doubt’s enjoyable ‘Push & Shove’.

We’re interested to hear how these turn out.

Pondering a weekend clubbing trip to Sydney? You've made the right choice. Forget the lockout laws - there are still plenty of great clubs and parties to hit up...and you can even avoid the pesky new laws. Here's our guide to an epic 48 hours in Australia's adopted capital.

Friday

 photo QT_zps710d3bb0.jpg

7pm: Check into the QT Sydney

One of the city’s best new boutique hotels, QT Sydney has an air of cool without the stuffiness. It’s also the hotel of choice for many club promoters, which means you can expect to bump into an international DJ or two.

 photo SherriffLobo_zpsc919a134.jpg

8pm: Grab a drink at Lobo Plantation

Take a short stroll over to the award-winning Lobo Plantation, which Time Out describes as “the basement rum bar in the CBD with a whole lot of swagger.” Amazing cocktails and service, and décor that will transport you back to Havana in the 1940s, it’s the perfect spot for a pre-dinner tipple.

 photo Toko_zpsc0cc5335.jpg

9:30pm: Dine at Toko

Jump in a cab and head to Surry Hills for an upmarket yet speedy Japanese dinner. Toko provides an informal style known as “izakaya” which combined with prompt service and fantastic produce makes for an epic dining experience like no other. Our pick: wagyu nigiri.

 photo burdekin2_zps298884bb.jpg

11pm: Party at The Burdekin

It’s time to boogie. Nestled on the corner of Oxford St – one of Sydney’s infamous nightlife hubs – The Burdekin Hotel is home to some of the city’s best club nights and is also the go-to venue for one off parties. You can always expect quality house and techno on a Friday, be it courtesy of one of the many rotating monthly parties; Tapdance, Bad Apple, Lush vs Substance and Oscillate.

Saturday

 photo soultrain_zps14c318ea.jpg

9:30am: Workout with Soultrain

If you’re keen to sweat out last night’s sin, head to the City Of Sydney PCYC in Woolloomooloo for a workout at Soultrain, where you can get some dedicated personal training.

 photo suzieq_zpse9efd9d6.jpg

11am: Brunch at Suzie Q

If you fancy a little brunch and a spot of record shopping, kill two birds at this popular Surry Hills cafe. The menu is a clever homage to classical jazz, rock and techno songs and the food is spot on, as is the vinyl stock.

 photo MCA_zpsd6528980.jpg

1pm: Get lost in the MCA

There’s always cool shit to see at the Museum Of Contemporary Art…even if you’re not an art buff. Combine the visit with a harbour stroll taking in the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and The Rocks.

 photo Mojo1_zps717b1a3a.jpg

3pm: Mojo Record Bar

As you mosey your way back up to the QT, stop by Mojo Record Bar for another spot of record digging. Arguably housing the best collection of vinyl in the city at the moment, the shop connects to cool, dark little bar…in case you’re ready for another beverage.

5pm: Nap

This should hopefully be self-explanatory. If not, seek help.

7pm: Enjoy a beer at Gowings Bar & Grill

QT houses an awesome European style bar perfect for a quick drink before heading out to attack Saturday night.

 photo Slip_zpsd74f0a87.jpg

8pm: Slip Inn / Chinese Laundry

Slip Inn boasts Sydney’s best outdoor courtyard with an unmatched ambience. Head here for a Mexican feast courtesy of the popular El Loco menu and settle in for a drink or three. Just downstairs is the city’s longest running club Chinese Laundry where you can catch international DJs week in, week out. Check here for this month’s roster.

 photo pachasydney_zps90c4ef95.jpg

11:30pm: Pacha Sydney

We didn’t rate this club night as one of our 20 Must Do Parties Before You Die for nothing. Trust us: go. Pacha Sydney offers a clubbing experience with all the visual trimmings you could hope for. Check here for this month’s roster.

 photo Imperial_zpsf76e706d.jpg

2am: Kick on at The Imperial Hotel

It’s past 1:30am…so there’s nowhere to kick on the night because of the lockout laws, right? Wrong. The Imperial Hotel in Sydney’s inner-west is a short 15 minute taxi trip away and has quickly become the new early morning clubbing haunt due to it’s lockout-free location and awesome parties courtesy of Motorik and Speakeasy.

Sunday

 photo Bondi_zpsf3744042.jpg

11:30am: Swim at Bondi Beach

A swim in the ocean is the cure for everything…especially a hangover.

 photo panamaburger_zps9898deba.jpg

1pm: Lunch at Panama House

Take a leisurely stroll up Bondi Road until you hit the first bunch of shops. It’s here you’ll find one of Bondi’s gems, Panama House. Run by the same crew as The Corner House, this Central American style restaurant is a popular spot for locals. Our pick: Panama burger, tacos or po-boys. You can’t go wrong.

 photo cafedelmarrrrr_zpsed1f125b.jpg

3pm: Drinks in the sun at Café Del Mar

Time to get back on the horse…and there’s no better place to do just that than Café Del Mar Sydney’s sun-drenched balcony overlooking Darling Harbour, which has smooth house grooves every Sunday from Deptune and a cast of rotating DJs.

 photo SASH_zps1293d5a2.jpg

5pm: Get S.A.S.H-ed

Now it’s really time to get back on the horse…the S.A.S.H horse. The best Sunday party for going on three years now, S.A.S.H is a Sydney institution which brought the boogie back to the Sabbath (thank Christ).

 photo Spice_zps2b5daf6c.jpg

9pm: Spice things up

Still not had enough? We’ve got the perfect place: The Spice Cellar. With a focus on pushing resident DJs (as well as internationals on Saturdays), there’s no better place to cap off an epic weekend than Spice. Party till the wee hours and miss your flight home. Fuck it.

5 Things We Learned About Tiesto on Superstar DJs with Annie Mac

$
0
0

In her new documentary series, Superstar DJs, Radio 1 presenter Annie Mac aims to show the world an honest, behind the scenes glimpse into the world of superstar DJs.

Tonight, Annie will get up close and personal with Seth Troxler. And knowing Seth, it will likely be full of insight, controversy, and laughs.

Though last week, Tiesto kicked off the series. And while his musical style switch-up in 2009 came at the dismay of fans around the globe, he’s still one of the world’s most in demand jocks, commanding huge fees and playing stadiums regularly.

But who is the real Tijs? Well, he’s a slightly awkward, fun-obsessed, Jägermeister hound, but that’s not all…

1. Tiesto is terrified of retirement.

He’s been a DJ since he was 15, which means at 45, he’s been at it for 30 years – living a ‘normal life,’ is beyond him, and he's totally addicted to the DJ ‘lifestyle,’ saying, “I don’t even know how to live anymore.”

2. He’s looking for a wife.

Even though ‘normal life’ scares him, he does seem to want to settle down with age towards the end of the show. Ladies?

3. The guy drinks a lot of Jager.

Though, if you played Tiesto’s music night after night, wouldn’t you?

3. He’s kinda awkward, and still gets nervous before sets.

Especially without Jager – just watch a sober Tiesto after his head injury. Trust us.

5. He hasn’t sold out, he’s ‘evolved.’

Selling out, in Teisto’s words, is doing something you don’t like for money, but Tiesto still loves what he does – very much. And, as he points out, he switched styles to what would become known as EDM in 2009, when Avicii ‘wasn’t even born yet.'

Tonight’s show promises to be a bit more eye opening, as the always honest Seth Troxler Annie’s next subject.

You can stream Superstar DJs with Annie Mac here it here.

Richie Hawtin says: “We’re excited to introduce ENTER.AV fully this summer as we stream a curated live stream from every minute and every week of ENTER. Season Three. After feeling the warmth from people on every corner of the planet from last year’s streams, we wanted to give an even closer insight into what happens inside Space Ibiza when we take over every Thursday.

We plan to provide more cameras, more DJ’s, more diversity in sound, more connection to what’s going on at ENTER. in general. For those who can’t attend, this is a chance to feel a part of what’s happening.”

Also new for 2014 is ENTER.CNTRL, which will feature an interactive music installation developed by DJ TechTools.

Ean Golden from DJ TechTools adds: "This year we asked the question: what would happen if you replaced the DJ with an interactive music experience that allows anyone to step up and CNTRL every instrument in the mix? After four months of design, experiments and development - the results are amazing.

Six strangers get to interact with an evolving ‘DJ Mix’ containing tracks from MINUS and ENTER. artists, which enable them to play a musical role in how the night will sound. It's my hope that this will inspire people to play music, and connect party goers in a more meaningful way through music."

ENTER. Opening Party takes place on Thursday 3rd July. Entry is €10 before 10pm with an ENTER. wristband and black DOT somewhere on your body.

SoundCloud: 'we work hard to ensure that everyone's rights are respected.'

Amidst growing frustration from users regarding copyright claims, SoundCloud has issued a statement on the matter.

After it was revealed recently that SoundCloud is now allowing record company giant Universal Music to directly flag and remove any content it feels violates the company's copyrights without notice, SoundCloud has responded.

The statement to Mixmag reads:

"As a responsible hosting platform, we work hard to ensure that everyone's rights are respected. In the case of rights holders, that means having processes in place to ensure that any content posted without authorisation is removed quickly and efficiently.

In the case of users, that means having separate processes in place to ensure that any content removed in error can be reinstated equally quickly. If any user believes that content has been removed in error - for example, because they had the necessary permissions from Universal Music and/or any other rights holder - then they are free to dispute the takedown."

The Prodigy To Release a New Album This Year

The Prodigy’s main man Liam Howlett has revealed that the band is working on a new album that will be out later this year. The follow up to 2009’s ‘Invaders Must Die’ is apparently a departure from The Prodigy’s last full-length album.

Howlett tells NME, “It’s more violent-sounding; it feels wilder. It’s not so much old-school. It’s neither guitar-based nor synth-based; it’s kind of a mixture. It doesn’t feel so radio-friendly to me; it feels like it’s got a lot of edge.”

The Prodigy originally revealed that they were working on a new album back in 2012, telling NME that it was tentatively titled ‘How To Steal A Jet Fighter.’ Howlett now says that the album will “definitely not” be called that.

“I’ve got a new title but you can’t have it. It’s too early! I’ve written everything and I’m basically going through each track and making sure they’re firing.”

Hardwell: 'I always listen to deep house, tech house and techno'

$
0
0

On the evening of the inaugural show of Hardwell’s first ever Ibiza residency, I sat down with one of the world's biggest DJs for a quick chat moments before he was to take to the Ushuaia stage.

I’d obviously done my research on the Dutchman prior to our meeting and I had an idea about his background and what he was about, but I didn’t know what to expect from our talk.

My music taste lies firmly in the underground – whether it’s the sound of jacking ‘90s deep house or the kind of dark raw techno you hear in Berghain, the music I love is miles apart from EDM and the music Hardwell makes.

This thought left me wondering if it might be difficult to connect with an artist like Hardwell, though once he met me in the Ushuaia green room, shook my hand and sat down with a beer to chat with me I found him to be a hugely likeable guy who cares about what he does.

Whilst his music might not be to my taste, prejudices were swept aside and the Dutchman explained to me about his very early introduction to dance music, his Ibiza experience and his surprising listening habits.

I just wanted to start with your first experiences of Ibiza and how it all started for you here? Well, atually, as a young kid I always dreamed about Ibiza, you know? It’s known as paradise for dance music in general so when I started DJing it was always a dream for me to perform in Ibiza.

In 2010 I got invited by Tiesto to play with him at Privilege and that was actually my first Ibiza experience and from that point I actually started touring in Ibiza and played basically all the clubs on the island.

So I think the next natural step was to do my own residency here and Ushuaia asked me to do my own night, of course I just said yes. It’s one of the best clubs on the island, so I’m really honoured to be doing my first ever residency.

Obviously you have your first residency – what was it about Ushuaia that made it the right venue? Yeah, there’s so many good clubs on the island. Personally, Ushuaia is my favourite. Just because when you’re on a summer vacation, the sun is shining and you’re on the beach – you want the best party experience you can imagine and to be at a pool party and just to be outside is great. It ends at midnight, just before the real nightlife starts in Ibiza, and it’s a great warm-up.

It’s the perfect club – technically it has the best sound system on the island, the visuals are stunning and it looks absolutely amazing.

What can we expect from your sets over the season? Well, this is one of the few gigs where I actually play for 3 hours. Normally when you’re booked at a festival you play for like an hour and a half or two hours in a club. So yeah I’m going to play 3 hours, everything is improvised so I just want to read the crowd and just give them the best experience possible man.

I think that’s the kind of image of Ibiza – all of the DJs take people on a journey here. They’re on vacation and you don’t know what to expect. You just go with the flow and see where it ends.

Just going back to what you were saying earlier about Tiesto inviting you here – I know he was one of the first DJs you got, into so what was that like? Yeah that was definitely a big deal for me, definitely. He’s always been a huge role model for me in every single way. To be invited by him, besides it being a really big honour it was one of the biggest nights you could perform in Ibiza.

We got in touch by email because he was really into my productions and we were emailing back and forth – I emailed one of my new songs and he really fell in love and he was like ‘I really want you to be one of my performers at my Ibiza residency’. That’s the first time I got to the island! In a very good way as well because I played the biggest club at that time, Privilege.

You were very young when this was all happening – How did you get into producing at such a young age? Well, I started playing piano when I was four years old and I was always into music. I think I was 10 years old when I discovered dance music. It really got me, the synthesisers and the way they tweaked the sounds and it was so different from the stuff they played on the radio at the time.

I wanted to make the music as well, so I was searching on the internet about how the synthesisers worked and downloaded the cracked version of Fruity Loops, and I was just messing around with different sounds. I did that for two years and when I was 14 years old I signed my first record deal.

So young! Also, because dance music is so important in the club environment, but you were too young to experience it on the dance floor – how did that effect things? I had no club experiences at that time because I was 12 so I was just listening to other people’s productions. I was buying CDs and luckily I had Tiesto’s record store in Breda so I bought all my vinyl there.

I was just listening to all the big club bangers and I was just trying to re-do the synths and put my own twist on it.

I know you’ve said you prefer it to be all about the music. With some of the big EDM shows there’s a lot of production and loads of visuals – how do you get the balance right? I’m okay with it – when I play a big show everybody is used to it and everybody wants me to be a part of that show, everybody wants me to perform on a stage like that with all the fireworks and the visuals,

I’m okay with that. But when I do my own shows I always prefer it to be all about the music. If they shut down the stage and every single light I think people will still have a good time because it’s all about the music.

I think you can tell by the guys who I have invited as guests at Ushuaia, they’re all good friends of mine. These are guys I really trust and look up to music wise. I think that’s really important when it comes to creating a proper club night here in Ibiza.

It’s not about every single DJ, every single hour banging out the big records, it’s about the whole night. That’s why I always say it’s more about the music than the whole production on the stage.

EDM comes under a lot of fire from a lot of people, particularly underground artists – are there any underground house and techno artists that you listen to that people might not expect you to? I’m a big lover of dance music in general and in every single way. If I listen to music myself, when it comes to dance music I always listen to deep house, tech house and techno, like always. I never listen to like EDM or whatever people call it nowadays, you know, the big room sound.

I listen to guys like Solomun, every deep house thing, there are so many good deep house DJs these days. Even Franky Rizardo, who is playing at my night, he is one of my best friends, but the radio show he is doing with Flow, I think it’s great. I also love Eric Prydz’s sets, which are totally different from my sound, but I love the way he plays and his productions. I listen to all kinds of different stuff in dance music.

In the future would you see the sound of your productions moving towards something different? Yeah, definitely, that’s what happens, and over the past few years as well. As a producer when I’m in the studio I never want to get stuck in one certain sound. I always try to come up with something new.

I think over the years your sound is always developing especially right now as I am working on my debut album. There’s super poppy tracks, but also super underground tracks that you would never expect from Hardwell and everything in between. When I DJ as Hardwell I have to play to the crowd – people expect something from me. I always play that certain sound.

It’s not the direction I’m aiming for, but I think when I’m working on the album, I have the feeling I can work on my diversity and I can produce whatever I want and the music I like. I like pop songs, but I also like more underground songs. As long as it’s good music and I believe in good music, it will be on my album. A lot of people will be surprised by the album. I’m aiming to finish it after the summer as obviously the summer is really busy!

Listen to Hardwell on Pulse Radio.
