The Sydney club scene is banding together this weekend to help promoter and industry legend Jack McCord get back to Australia after being involved in a serious motorbike accident in Bali. McCord's friends and family have started a fundraising operation for the $50,000 Medivac required to get him back home, and tonight Kings Cross venue Goldfish is holding another fundraiser with a bunch of the city's best DJs.

“Jack was left for dead in Bali after a fatal motorbike accident,” Goldfish explains. “It took over 2 hours for him to get to very basic medical help. He was taken to hospital unconscious where it was discovered he had shattered most of the bones in the left side of his body. He has been in a coma for the past 24 hours, and has just completed 8 hours of surgery to stabilise him in preparation for a medivac to Darwin where he will have a fighting chance at survival."

McCord has spent the past three years living in Bali where he is currently the General Manager of Mint Club in Seminyak.

You can donate to Jack's cause here and get down to Goldfish tonight from 4pm where there will be donations accepted on the door and auctions running throughout the evening.

Nina Kraviz Blown Away By EDM At Stereosonic: "It sounded like a proper mass orgasm"

0
0

EDM usually gets a bad rap from ‘underground’ DJs (yes Seth Troxler we’re looking at you). Though in her new column for Groove magazine Nina Kraviz has expressed an admiration for the newly emerged sound and the positive vibes it creates at festivals, drawing from her experiences down under during the Stereosonic tour back in 2012.

As Kraviz pens in the column, after she wrapped her set at a “smaller stage” at Stereosonic in Sydney, the Russian DJ then rushed off to the main stage to watch the “famous EDM artists” play, where she was “shocked” by the different scenario presented to her.

“They played on a packed stadium-size open air main stage and the effect they had on people was unbelievable,” she explains. “Recognizing a famous melody from the first note the crowd screamed in pure ecstasy of happiness. The music was really loud and with all the screaming it sounded like a proper mass orgasm. The experience itself was truly amazing. In just five seconds each and every hand was up in the Sydney air. Everyone was unconditionally happy. I had never seen anything like that before…it looked and felt like the most intense rock concert ever.”

And what did Nina think of Australia’s biggest electronic music festival?

“It was perfectly organised and everything worked like clockwork. There was so much care involved it felt like I could easily be some famous pop artist. The sound was mind-blowing and even my turntables worked with no trouble.”

That’s one for the resume, eh Stereosonic?

Essential Mixing: Porter Robinson

0
0

Following his debut for the Essential Mix back in 2012, young US producer Porter Robinson has returned to the BBC Radio One mix show with a set that boasts a massive 72 tracks in two hours.

Featuring original productions from his forthcoming new album 'Worlds,' Robinson has also thrown in plenty of tracks from Australian producers including Flume, Touch Sensitive, Yeo and recent Pulse Fresh Blood inductee Motez. Which makes sense really, given his admiration for Australia's electronic scene which has sprouted during his tours to the country over the past few years.

“I spent two years writing Worlds and during that time I’d become really pessimistic about the future of electronic music,” Porter Robinson explained to BBC Radio One.

“But once I finished the album I went and made an active effort to find new electronic music that touched me. I’ve fully changed my mind! I think the future is really, really bright. There’s a ton of great music today that just needs to be discovered. That’s not to say this mix is entirely devoid of classics, but it’s mostly made up of stuff I’ve heard recently.”

Disclosure Present Wild Life At We Love... Space: Review

0
0

This Sunday saw a special We Love… Space Ibiza as Disclosure brought their Wild Life party to Ibiza for the first time with an almighty bang.

A little birdy told me that 8000 presale tickets had been sold in the run up to the event, and once I had walked into the Discoteca that became immediately apparent. Space was heaving with bodies in every corner, and Disclosure were still a good 45 minutes away from playing – there was a palpable buzz in the air.

Swede Jonas Rathsman was warming up proceedings with a series of catchy and instantly recognisable house tracks such as Alex Niggemann’s ‘Materium’, which was seamlessly transitioned into Ten Walls’ ‘Walking With Elephants’. The hot, sweaty and packed room was alive with an electric atmosphere as the powerful crystalline sound of the Discoteca’s Funktion Ones sparked the crowd into fits of excitement.

Rathsman traded in an abundance of uplifting summer vibes – never too serious and essentially just what the crowd wanted, who on the whole were pretty much all there to see Disclosure. It very much had a gig-like atmosphere to the night rather than a rave, but that is what Disclosure are all about. The duo blurs lines and straddles the usual musical markers – commercial yet credible amongst underground DJs; pop-dance yet owing plenty to deep house and UK garage and electronic musicians – and they’re live instrumentalists.

Bursting into life with ‘When A Fire Starts To Burn’ and ‘Boiling’, the two lads had the rammed crowd bouncing. ‘You & Me’ received an excitable reaction and Eliza (‘You & Me’ guest vocalist) Doolittle’s absence meant nothing as the revellers sang back every word. It was a pleasure to watch the two brothers perform as they combined an array of live percussion, vocals, bass guitar and synthesisers in their instrumentation. The live bass playing on ‘You & Me’, the blasts of live drum work and the uncanny knack for the sweetest of pop melodies perfectly highlights the pair's multi-faceted talents.

The biggest reactions from the crowd were saved for the likes of ‘White Noise’, the eager crowd lapping up yet another familiar number. The pair closed the set with ‘Help Me Lose My Mind’, which featured the vocals of London Grammar, and ‘Latch’, which saw the packed crowd singing the lyrics right back at them before the siblings then told us of their excitement about seeing Derrick May in action and left the stage looking triumphant.

Regardless of whether you have your prejudices about pop music, the duo are immensely talented musicians and song writers, they seem like top blokes and they clearly have huge respect from all corners of the dance music scene and beyond. You can even see the respect they command from the booking of Detroit techno pioneer and one third of the Bellville Three- Derrick May, the man who practically invented techno from scratch.

Derrick May was very much of the old school, fast mixing style – bringing in elements of other songs, chopping, changing and commanding the attention of party-goers. Dropping a mix of deep and tough sounds, May hit us with the likes of George Fitzgerald’s ‘Child’, Leon Vynehall’s ‘It’s Just House (House of Dupree) and Coeo's 'Do It'.

Meanwhile over in the Terrace, things were showing no signs of letting up as one half of Ame, Kristian Beyer, took over the mixing duties serving up some cold dark dance floor stompers. For me, the highlight song of the set was Barnt’s remix of C.P.I. – Proceso, out on John Talabot’s Hivern Discs, with its massive clap line, eerie, tension building synth, and wild acid line straight into a hedonistic, otherworldly breakdown is a frantic tripped out killer for the Terrace floor.

From there it was time to call it a night. Disclosure brought the goods, and with three more of their Wild Life showcases to come, they could yet steal the show this season at Space.

Someone once said that "The best things in life are free" that is why the Junta Movement has become one of the premier parties in Johannesburg. To get into this fabled event one simply has to register online, a few clicks later and you are in. Junta has become a very special and integral part of the Johannesburg undeground music scene and its culture.

Ainsley Staurt the founder of the Junta Movement say “I started Junta because I grew tired of the monotonous and ubiquitous events that littered Joburg. Different DJ’s all playing the same boring plastic music heard on the radio stations or seen on TV. What made it worse is that an entrance fee was mandatory to hear all of this crap music and I asked myself, “Why should I have to pay for something before I experience it?” True to his statement Junta movement has played host to the Andre Lodemann, Sahin Meyer, Miguel Teveres, Mig Madiq, Nuno Estevez, Erfaan Pearce, Atjazz and Kid Fonque and Jullian Gomes. These individuals are people who pioneer to change the industry, they work outside of the norm and the event seeks to encompass that.

Hosted in Johannesburg the secret to Junta’s success has been their ability to find special venues in the city that have never been used or seen before. There are so many amazing spaces to use in Johannesburg, there are so many artists that have a genuine passion for music and Junta wants to showcase their talent rather than becoming a gimmick. There is so much music being produced today and more that has not yet been discovered in the past from around the world- and there are people craving to be a part of that experience. Junta is evolving with each event; it is a place where the music is the priority; where you can get lost in the music with like-minded enthusiasts. Junta is a sociable, humble atmosphere where you are not seen as a statistic, but rather as a fellow comrade, a comrade that is an integral part of a movement in the pursuit of an authentic musical experience.

The Second Junta Movement of the year will feature UK based South African DJ and Producer Sahin Meyer. Sahin has released on Labels like Room With a view and also pioneers his own unique brand of music, a record label and events company called Hlanganani Music. Johannesburg based Slam Poet will feature alongside Sahin Meyer for a two hour live performance. As with all the other Juntas this one promises to be remarkable so make sure you register and be part of the revolution.

La Fleur Mixes Pulse.178

Having selected Stockholm born, Berlin based La Fleur as one of our 10 Artists to Watch in 2014, its safe to say we weren't off the mark.

Signing with the Watergate agency - and gained a full time residency at the club -  she also recently mixed the club's latest compilation series, Watergate 16, an experience she found to be a 'rollercoaster of emotions.' Her label, Power Plant, continues to feature artists like Ian Pooley & Jordan Peak, while La Fleur stays busy in the studio releasing originals like the 'Arms Around' EP (out today), the title track of which appeared on her recent compilation along with 'Stella.'

Outside of Berlin, she'll be returning to Zoo Project and see a debut show at Sankeys Ibiza this summer, along with an upcoming US tour. And today, we're lucky enough to have La Fleur mix Pulse.178, which you can download below.

DOWNLOAD PULSE.178

You recently released Watergate 16. What was it like to be a part of such an illustrious mix collection, and how did you approach it? It was exciting, frustrating and very satisfying at the same time. I tried to find a happy medium between exclusive new tracks, some old favorite classics and a few new ones mixed with my originals. The mix has been with me since November last year and was part of my daily routine for so long, and it was at some point a roller coaster of emotions but in the end it was worth it and I am proud of it.

Last time we spoke with you, you had just signed to the Watergate agency – how are things going as part of the Watergate family? Has it influenced or changed you in any way as an artist? It is going well I think, I hope! I’m a loner and I like to have control and do things my way, but it was good for me to be part of a crew, a family, to grow together.

The artwork for many of your releases is particularly striking – how important is the artwork for you? How did you think it adds to the overall experience of buying music? The artwork for my label Power Plant is very important! The visual aspect in general is very interesting and important for me. When I find the right illustration for the music and artist, I just know. And then I try to work my way to get that artwork. Sometimes it has taken up to two years until it's been cleared. But it has been worth all the time spent.

I work with different illustrators. The last two releases, I have also had exhibitions at galleries in Stockholm and Berlin, showing their art as a release party in connection to the release. I want to feel that I am releasing something I care for, something I like something that I think is special. I want the artwork also to fit with the music and artist and wise versa.

Is there a particular artist’s work that you would like to use the most for a future release? Yes, and I am so happy it worked out! The next cover artwork will be from London based Dan Hillier, who is acclaimed for his black line work, leaning towards the esoteric and mysterious. Very beautiful and it fits perfect with the Jesper Ryom's music who is the artist that is next up on Power Plant.

You’re playing at Sankeys and at the Zoo Project in Ibiza this summer – will you approach these gigs much differently to a gig at Watergate for example? If so, how? Every gig is different and especially compared to Watergate, since the waterfloor feels a bit like my living room. So first off I will be a bit more nervous playing at Sankeys, since it's also my first gig there. But I'm so much looking forward! The Zoo Project I'd played for two summers already and I had a great time every time so I'm excited to be back.

Finally, what's next on your horizon? Today is the release on my ‘Arms Around’ EP. It's my second release on Watergate Records and it's including the 2 exclusive tracks from my Watergate 16 compilation, a killer remix by Carl Craig and more exclusive tunes from Matthias Meyer, Of Norway, Casino Times and Show-B!

It will be a very fun busy summer and I can't wait for my US tour in September. There is also a remix request I'm excited to hear more about, and now also finalizing new tracks in the studio that I hope to find the perfect home for.
