Clockwork unveil new album 'B.O.A.T.S' on Life & Death

Life & Death have shaped up to be one of the most exctiting, underground deep house labels around, thanks to their fantastic releases from the likes of Tale OF Us, DJ Tennis and Thugfucker, the debut album from eerie, soulful deep house guys Clockork entitled B.O.A.T.S, due for release on the 15th April.

Standing for 'Based on A True Story', the debut LP from the Italian duo seeks to further explore their deep, crossover-pop sound  - and is also the first album released off the increasingly popular Italian label. The album includes guest appearances from Avatism, Tale Of Us and vocal spots from Chasing Kurt and Clarian from Footprintz. You can also grab previous single 'Places' from their SoundCloud page below.

"We'd like to tell you a little story. But before we do we'd like to suggest not getting too obsessed with checking all the facts or taking note of all of the names and places - they might not all be true. But this story is based on a true story. And when the story is really a good one, that should be good enough..." says a statement from the elusive, deep duo; confusing yet intriguing.

B.O.A.T.S is released through Life & Death on April 15th. Packshot and tracklisting underneath.

Various Artists
Hospitality: Drum + Bass 2013
[Hospital Records]

By now, in England, we know not to let a few sunny mornings fool us into thinking its spring, but sod it, buy yourself a little sub, roll down your car windows and put the heating on full - let’s pretend its summertime! Hospital Records are back with another big mix for 2013, the 3rd in the Hospitality DnB series. Tomahawk works across the board, showcasing (within reason) pretty much everything drum & bass has to offer right now. As well as being a euphoric summery mix, Hospitality Drum & Bass 2013 is also actually a fairly good depiction of d'n'b's current affairs at the moment - plus it also includes 9 previously unreleased tracks (so even all you aficionados are sure to find something you haven’t heard before).

Mampi’s back with a new album, ‘History’, from which the intro track ‘Gangster’ is taken, a proper stomper of an opener. Calyx & Teebee had a massive 2012, putting pen to paper to join Andy C at Ram Records, the biggest of their releases from their new home in ‘Elevate This Sound’ gets played anywhere from prime-time Radio One to the dingiest of drum and bass dungeons, also joined in the mix by Ram comrades Culture Shock.

The darker shades of the spectrum are also accounted for. New Critical Records signing Emperor, Ulterior Motive, Utopia Music’s Villem, Fields and Mako all feature, and new-boys-on-the-block Etherwood, Placid, Pluton & Skyer all get their first big break. And of course, the Hospital boys are out in force; High Contrast, Logistics, Netsky, Danny Byrd, Fred V & Grafix, and Gresham brothers Matt and Dan joining forces to find some ‘Nu:Logic’. And lest we forget, 2 tracks from man of the moment S.P.Y’s new album, ‘What the Future Holds’, also on Hospital Records.

While the synthy overtones are both consistent and prevalent, there is a strong undercurrent of pure krunk to the mix, underlining the sheer diversity of todays dnb scene. Surely, with such strength-in-depth, drum and bass is proving to have tonnes more life left in its limbs... it's here to stay.

Nine Free Tracks in Honor of J Dilla - Shigeto

Ghostly International artist Shigeto has created a package of nine tracks as a tribute to the late great J Dilla. Dilla, who passed away at the age of 32 on February 10th, 2006, was a pioneering hip hop producer from Detroit whose music crossed genres.

"This set was curated and inspired by J Dilla's constant integration of countless genres and relentless output," says Shigeto. Most of the tracks were made in an hour or less. The best part is, it's all free. You can stream and download Shigeto's Beats 4 Dilla for below.

If you haven't already, check out our very special birthday tribute to J Dilla.

About Shigeto:

"Shigeto, aka Zach Saignaw, was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.

Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun,

a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP and What We Held Onto EP were his first releases with Ghostly International in the spring of 2010. These were followed quickly by the well-received full-length Full Circle and Full Circle Remixes in late 2010 and early 2011 respectively. These releases are nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail."

Kerri Chandler Doesn't Want You to Get The F*** Out - Response to Viral Video

Earlier this week, a viral video of Kerri Chandler playing at the Rex Club in Paris was leaked to the web. It appeared he was angrily ranting at patrons about commercial music, stopping his set to yell at them about "David Guetta shit," and asking them to "get the fuck outta there."

This short clip, however, was taken out of context. The longer clip, posted below, shows that his comments were part of a longer hype session Kerri delivered re: underground house music. Today he released a statement via Twitter:

"I just want to make it clear that neither DJ Deep or anyone else of the Rex Club asked me to play commercial music. Some clips showed what I said out of context so I wanted to clear things up.

"What I said was not a response to DJ Deep or the staff of the Rex Club. It was near the end of the night and I wanted to go deeper. Rex has always let me play what I wanted and I look forward to returning soon. Thank you all for your support."

Dog Has Perfect Pitch, Plays Piano

A little humor for your Friday evening. But be warned, musicians, this may dishearten you. A video online shows a dog with what appears to be perfect pitch - the ability to detect any note simply by hearing it. In the video, the dog's owner/trainer plays a note on a kazoo-like instrument, and the dog responds by playing the corresponding note on the keyboard.

Some of the Youtube comments indicate how impressive this is:

"I'm in music school...I can't do this, but a dog can. I am done."

And here's an example of a dog without perfect pitch...

Review: Darkside DJ Set In Melbourne

$

Darkside at Liberty Social. 200 tickets sold in two minutes - for a DJ set on a Wednesday night. An event page crowded with people asking to buy tickets. A limited door release, but the question is how long it'll take for the queue to stretch around the block. Someone posted on the event page at 2:45 that afternoon, "Damn, 250 people lined up already. Stay at home guys and gals." A pretty hyped gig, to say the least.

I arrive at around 11.30. Locals TK are warming up the dance floor with some hot conga beats. The place is absolutely jam-packed. Jaar and Harrington take the stage to loud applause. For those who've come early to queue, it's been up to six hours hanging here waiting for this. After a long, atmospheric opener, the duo kick off with some slow, cumbia-style house beats. Harrington is serious and single-minded, in a strange juxtaposition to his bouncy ginger hair. Jaar, on the other hand, seems to be more openly enjoying himself - flashing his dark, mysterious smile into the crowd and at times closing his eyes and losing himself in the music.

Jaar drops Poolside's laid-back cover of 'Harvest Moon'. It's beautiful, and perfectly gets the vibe of the night:

"I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon."

I turn to a girl next to me and ask if she knows who Neil Young is. She shrugs and keeps dancing. Oh well. I wonder how old Neil would feel about his song being played in a tight, sweaty club, lit with multicolour lasers. I like to think he'd get it, somehow.

The night wears on and the packed crowd thins out a little. It is a school night, after all. The duo's slow house groove gives way to a more eclectic mix, with some bassy tunes and gangsta beats. One of the highlights of the night comes in the form of James Blake's 'Wilhelm Scream'. Will that track ever lose its anthem status?

By three o'clock, it's pretty much dirty techno with the occasional oddity thrown in, like Daphni's remix of Cos Ber Zam's 'Ne Noya'. I go outside for a cigarette and get trapped in a boring conversation about architecture. I'm looking for a polite escape when suddenly a freight truck begins reversing into the laneway. The bouncers come over and start shooing everyone out. Perfect. I slink back into the club.

It's just the hardcore types left now. They've called last drinks half an hour ago and everyone who's still raging is rolling on the night's momentum. We'll all be calling in sick tomorrow morning. Behind the decks, Jaar and Harrington show no sign of slowing down. I, on the other hand, am spent. It's a quarter past four and I have to be up early. As I leave the club, I cast a last glance back. Harrington, illuminated by a warm spotlight, is leaning backwards with his eyes closed. It's been a good night.

The time is ripe for pop-inflected house music. First Hot Natured cracked the UK Top 40 late last year with 'Benediction,' now UK house duo Disclosure have reached a very impressive #2 on the UK charts with their latest single ft. AlunaGeorge, 'White Noise'.

The track jumped from number twenty-eight last week, making it this week's highest mover.

USA, take note. There is tasteful dance music out there that is worthy of commercial success.

The Records That Defined Simian Mobile Disco

Simian Mobile Disco are ready. Ready to continue knocking the dance music world dead with their unique blend of techno and progressive dance floor ambiance, as expertly demonstrated by their universally hailed album Cerulean. It marks the start of the latest chapter for the duo, revisiting their dance music roots and developing an updated and hi-tech live spectacle. Ahead of a live album on the cards, an appearance at London's Factory 7 and a slated appearance at alpine based festival Snowbombing (probably the first of a year packed with dates), Pulse asked James & Jas to choose their 6 most defining inspirations and the sounds that shaped their musical aesthetics and styles. Over to you boys...

Aphex - Xtal

The first track on Selected Ambient Works 1 - this was one of the first of the Warp records that I got. Subsequently Warp records became a gateway into a world of electronic music that I knew nothing about. I listened to this over and over again, wondering what kind of instruments and effects you would use to make these sounds.

Freak - LFO

Psychedelia doesn't have to be wafty, dreamy sounding stuff. This is aggressively, weirdly psychedelic music and I remember searching for clubs where they might play records like this.

Steve Poindexter - Computer madness

Music technology has come a long way since this was made but there is something about the raw, instinctive spirit of this record that makes me wonder if we are improving the right things. This still feels like an exciting record because it's so human, so loose. It's easy to over think things when you have the luxury of going back to fix them, it takes balls to not fix things these days but records like this remind us that it's worth it.

BBC Radiophonic - Dr Who Theme Tune

We are big fans of the Radiophonic workshop stuff, the adventurous attitude towards making sounds is something that has always been at the heart of what we do.

Cluster - Holly Wood

Coming from a band background but becoming increasingly obsessed with electronic music, the Krautrock scene made lots of sense to us. You have the droney, repetitive, austere aesthetic that we were learning to love in techno but with instruments that we recognised. This was encouraging, they didn't have a 909 but they were making music like this, perhaps we could too?

Plastikman - Spastik

True techno defies musical notation, it's about sound and texture and generally it's simple. What we have here is essentially one drum machine and a delay box and the results are one of the best techno records ever made. It's a lesson to any of us who have looked at a track session that's not quite working and seen stacks of layers; the solution is probably not another layer.

Simian Mobile Disco play Factory 7, Hearn St Shoreditch on Friday 22 February. Head here for tickets and see here for tickets to Snowbombing 2013.

Tim Green's Bedlam

$

The UK is full of hard grafting DJs and producers, but only a select handful ever make it to the same lofty heights as UK born Tim Green. Tim has seen his sound, style and aesthetics adorn some of the greatest imprints from around the globe, including Cocoon, dirtybird, RebelLion, Trapez, Get Physical and Caravan, through an always fresh and never repeated template that bridges the gap beteen the modern scene's disparate styles. On top of this, Tim also runs the highly-anticipated Bedlam parties and is also putting his energy into his recent Bedlam imprint. With a debut album on the horizon, aside from more Bedlam parties and constantly pushing the boundaries of fresh production, read on and see what the South East hailing DJ had to say for himself.

[Read on for download & tracklisting]

Hi Tim thanks for joining us - how is 2013 treating you so far?Yeah its good thanks, really busy. Not much time off since New Years, lots of studio work and gigs. So I have thrown myself straight into 2013! I just got back from a few days in Reykjavik Iceland this morning, which was lovely to be back there again. Had a really great gig opening a good friends new club called Volta!

How's the running of the Bedlam empire going? What's the plan for the upcoming year, do you plan to expand even further? Yeah its going good also thanks. We have several ideas in the works and lots of things in the pipeline. Its looking really interesting right now. I will be starting the label 'Bedlam Recordings' soon as well. Which will feature new music from me, as well as close friends of mine who are up and coming producers I'm really into and want to showcase their music. We also will be taking Bedlam events to various places around the globe too. Throwing parties the way we want to do it and hopefully adding our flavour and touch to the events. We've just announced Martin Buttrich and Onno playing for us on the 29th of March, we've had Martin play for us at the very first Bedlam 4 years ago and he's the only headline act we've ever booked to play twice for us so I'm really looking forward to having him back!

It's been proven that you have quite the Midas touch when it comes to remixes... how do you approach the art of remixing as many people seem to get it wrong? First and foremost I only accept a very small amount of remix offers that I get. Simply because I only remix on the basis I feel I can do something really special with the original track. So its important to me to be selective in what I work on. Having a strong idea and direction, to make it different or better than the original. So if I'm really into the track and have a strong idea, I think that's is the best way to approach it.

You've also kept yourself busy on various different labels - is there a particular label that you're seeking to put music out on? Not really at the moment. Mainly because I'm focusing more on my Bedlam label, so I'm currently writing new music for this project. There are of course amazing labels out there right now that I would want to work with. But I'm not sure if my tracks would suit them. Or more to the point I simply don't have enough tracks finished right now. I take a long time to finish tracks, which sometimes is a good or bad thing. But I will definitely be still releasing music on other labels, when I get round to finishing more tracks!

You had a prolific rise to fame- but how much of a struggle was it to be noticed as a fresh faced DJ? You must have put a hell of a lot of hard work in... It was a lot of hard work yes, but mainly I was just determined to not give up and I am very passionate about writing music. Although I personally think its harder right now, with more hard work involved. There is a lot of new artists coming through all the time. People are always interested in new artists as they are fresh. But its harder to keep things fresh when you have already been around for a while. I really like this though, as it means you always have to work hard and challenge yourself, coming up with new ideas. Which is good because it keeps it interesting for me, not monotonous.

Your sound has gradually become a lot deeper over the last year - was that a conscious decision on your behalf? Yes the change is most definitely conscious. But I'm not just doing a "deeper" sound. I'm more interested in pushing myself musically into different sounds and emotions within my tracks. So going for a much more rich, dynamic, intelligent and musical direction. I have moved away from what I have done in the past simply because I got bored and was not as fulfilled by what I was writing. So its not that I'm just writing deeper tracks, its just I'm not going to stick to one sound. So expect anything from me with an open mind is all I can ask. I just want to write good music!

Talk to us some more about your debut album; ho did you approach it? Have you approached it solely with the dancefloor in mind or rather approaching with a more classic album format? It's not a dancefloor album at all. Its more a live band project with live instrumentation. With me singing and playing guitar also. Its still got a lot of electronic elements in there, simply because I am writing it on my own, part by part in my studio. But its more a blend of electronica, folk and pop. This is a completely different musical project that I have been working on for a long time now. Which will probably be under a different name also. Its me sitting down just writing music. With no pre confined boundaries like sticking to a certain genre, BPM, or having a 4/4 kick drum etc…. It will have elements of all my influences, Jazz, Rock, folk, classical, pop. But although I'm still in the final stages of finishing it, the plan is for it to be a classic album yes. I want it to be listened to as an album. This is getting lost more and more nowadays I feel. And I grew up with listening to music like this, all my favourite albums are like this.

Tell us about the special ingredient of this studio mix you delivered for us... The direction for this mix I had in mind was really a nod to Bedlam Records. A small taste of what to expect from the label. The mix showcases some forthcoming tracks for Bedlam Records, as well as some forthcoming promos from other artists. But mainly its a good representation of the tracks I'm playing right now.

Avicii's meteoric rise to fame has perks beyond traveling the globe to play the world's biggest festivals. It has been announced that, for his next album, the 24 year old prince of EDM will collaborate with some of the music industry's most influential players of the last several decades.

First up is Nile Rogers, the man behind the ubiquitous disco group "Chic." Rogers also announced last year that he was working with Daft Punk on their next album. Next collaborator is none other than Mac Davis, the man behind several of Elvis Presley's hits. Also slated are Mike Einzinger, the guitarist from Incubus, and Mike Shinoda, the guitarist and vocalist from Linkin Park.

How this will influence Avicii's sound is TBD. However, it's clear that increased radio playability will result. Is EDM big enough to swallow these other genres whole?

Armin van Buuren will be the first DJ in deep space, joining ninety-nine selected others called 'Founder Astronauts' who were invited by the company SXC on the first commercial flight to space in 2014. Armin will have to go through the training all astronauts go through such as exercises preparing for G-forces and weightlessness. Armin is quite excited and said in his press release, "For every DJ, it’s a dream to travel 3,5 times faster than their own sound! And then that deafening silence at 100 kilometers high. I can’t wait. I guess a 200 BPM heart rate is likely." We're hoping we get A State of Trance podcast from the cosmos while he's up there.

Die Antwoord release a new music video

The controversial Die Antwoord who have taken the world by storm have spawned hits such as ‘Evil Boy’ and ‘I fink U Freeky’ from their first two albums. Now with their new album on the way ‘Donker Mag’ translating to ‘Dark Power’ which is set to be released next year in February, Ninja has directed their new music video for single ‘Cookie Thumper’.

With a bio that reads along the lines of ‘are a fresh, futuristic, flame-throw-flow-freeking-zef rap rave crew’, you probably wouldn’t have a very clear idea of what to expect if you haven’t watched them live, or listened to their album before, the music video will help form an opinion if you haven’t already.

Die Antwoord have every step of the way, somehow managed to achieve this ‘wow’ factor with jaw dropping lyrics coupled with very ‘out-there’ visuals in their music videos and this time round with their new single they have managed to do just that again.

Adding to this release, Yo-Landi and Ninja have announced that their second single of the album ‘Donker Mag’ is to be released in August this year and will also be cast to play themselves in the lead-role of Neil Blomkamp’s upcoming film titled ‘Chappie’. We’ll keep you posted.
