Safia's 10 Favourite Electronic Pop Songs

0
0

Up-and-coming Canberra three piece Safia are currently in the midst of a national tour in support of recent single'Paranoia, Ghosts And Other Sounds'- an ubeat slice of R&B inflected electronic pop. Given their penchant for the electronic side of pop music, we asked the trio to share with us ten of their favourite songs currently doing the rounds.

Crooked Colours - 'In Your Bones'

In a thriving Australian electronic music scene, naturally you start hearing a bunch of artists that have the same sound. But these boys truly have their own sound, which is awesome!

Japanese Wallpaper - 'Waves (ft Pepa Knight)'

This dude is super young and incredibly talented. He's also got a great attitude and approach towards music, which is great to see with a young dude; he'll have a big future for sure.

Fishing - 'Chi Glow'

These guys are incredible producers and have an amazing electronic live show.

Electric Mantis - 'Flips & Flops, Drips & Drops'

Great beat & even better title.

Motez - 'Own Up'

Motez is an absolute legend, and this song is another gem.

Akouo - 'Not Enough'

Akouo (aka Fizzle) is currently supporting us on our national tour and he is absolutely killing it! This song is another great piece of music from the Tassie producer.

Young Franco - 'Brooklyn'

This tune is so damn funky! How could you not love it?

Kilter - 'They Say'

Can't say we are the biggest fans of the steel drum resurgence; but we make an exception when it comes to Kilter because his tunes are mighty mighty fine!

Paces - 'Can't Touch Me (ft Madeline Vida)'

Paces summer sounds are addictive! Micky is an all round legend as well.

The Kite String Tangle - 'Given The Chance'

Although this track’s been around for a bit already it still gives us those feels.

Cream At Amnesia Opening 2014: In Review

0
0

Thursday night saw the return of bonafide clubbing institution Cream at Amnesia. Cream’s name has been synonymous with clubbing culture for over two decades and quickly rose to become one of the most recognisable brands in dance music. Cream built its reputation on euphoric trance music that had become hugely popular in the late ‘90s, and big room music is still at the forefront of proceedings now.

The pulling power of Cream, coupled with certified huge names Paul Van Dyk and Calvin Harris, is hard to argue with and immediately evident when you walk through the entrance Amnesia. The sound was split across the two rooms – over in the main room Aly & Fila were warming up the crowd with an energetic set of hard and fast beats. That old match made in heaven – lasers and trance. The pace was rapid and the room was filled with the frantic sci-fi light show shooting to all corners of the room. When the lights and lasers are in full flow, the main room is something to behold, as if you’re transported to some sort of futuristic otherworld. Stripped back isn’t a phrase that is used at Cream – they deliver a feast for your eyes, that’s for sure.

Over in the Terrace it was less lasers and more of the brash and bold stop-start EDM fare served up by Burns. As it approached 3am, the Terrace was packed and still more people flooded in, desperate to see Calvin Harris. It’s strange to think of Amnesia as an intimate venue, but for a stadium DJ like Harris is concerned, the Terrace is about as intimate as it gets these days. His fans most probably saw it the same way as they clamoured for the best position to see the Scotsman. For Cream, the Terrace is turned around so the DJ is high up on stage at the opposite end to the usual DJ booth. It gives a more grand sense of occasion and adds that little bit extra to the spectacle, perfect for the kind of DJs performing at Cream.

With even Deadmau5 and Mike Pickering amongst the supporters backstage, high-fiving Calvin Harris as he readied himself for his set, the clamour for Harris had reached fever pitch. Once Burns had completed things, the Scot then jumped up onto the elevated stage and launched into his performance. CO2 cannons blasted vertically in front of the stage as Calvin Harris assumed the universal EDM DJ pose, arms aloft and outstretched, soaking up the youthfully vibrant atmosphere of the room. The talent of Calvin Harris to produce hit songs is undeniable – he knows exactly what these people want as they lap up every pop vocal, every melodic breakdown and every heavy drop. The success he has had over the past few years is also undeniable. It has been interesting watching him grow as an artist – who would have thought he would have got to where he is now after listening to ‘Acceptable in the 80s’ back in 2007?

The Cream Opening showed the immense power to draw in a crowd that Cream possesses and what makes the night the most popular on the island. Over 20 years down the line and Cream is showing no signs of slowing down.

Die Antwoord in new Dior commercial

0

Die Antwoord song “Enter The Ninja” has made it’s way into the world of high fashion and beauty as the soundtrack for the new Dior Addict ad.  The just released commercial for the luxury brand’s signature fragrance sees Russian model Sasha Luss whirl and twirl her way from one room to the next in a setting that we could only accurately describe as a mash up of an exotic floral fantasy with Alice in Wonderland on LSD.  Most surprising though is the realization that the soundtrack is a remixed version of “Enter The Ninja” by South African twosome Die Antwoord when you hear Yolandi Visser’s voice singing, “I am your butterfly.. I need your protection.. Need your protection..” in the background.     The 90 second commercial was masterminded by American director Harmony Korine who is best known for the film Spring Breakers. The South African duo formerly teamed up with Korine for the short "Umshini Wam" a couple of years ago which explains this seemingly unlikely coupling of their music with the Dior fashion, fragrance and cosmetic house.   Watch the Director's Cut of the ad below. It features twenty seconds more 'beyond the mirror' material than the regular commercial.

MAKJ Mixes Pulse.177

We first chatted with EDM up and comer and former race car driver MAKJ back in April, and since then things haven't slowed down for the American jock since then. He's continued a whirlwind tour schedule that's seen him play clubs and festivals around the globe - as well as a house party - seen his first iTunes chart hit, and now steps up for Pulse.177. You can download it, and find out more about what Mack has been up to in our interview, below.

DOWNLOAD PULSE.177

Last time we talked to you, your collaboration with Bassjackers, 'DERP,' was just about to be released. How has the reception to the track been? Amazing! My first top 20 on iTunes and it broke the Billboard charts in the US as I’m writing this!!!

What else have you been up to since we talked to you last? A lot of touring, writing, and touring. Did I say touring? [Laughs]

By the look of your Facebook, you played a house party recently? How did that come about? Well I always try to find the time to visit my parents in my hometown San Luis Obispo. I was in the middle of eating dinner with my parents and I get a call from my manager asking me if i would like to make a special appearance at a frat house I use to DJ back when i was attending college. I said yes and the rest was a blurring mess [laughs].

You also did a Reddit AMA. Are you a Redditor? Actually no I wasn’t, but since I did the AMA I have been on the site at least 4-5 times a day. Got me hooked.

Would you encourage more artists to reach out that way? Yes. definitely. Probably one the best social media platforms out right now!

Finally, what's next on your horizon? More MAKJ Music! I’ve been writing a lot, collaborating a lot, and touring a lot. I'm not going away anytime soon.

World's Most Controversial DJ Poll Promises New Voting System

0

It's the competition that everyone loves to hate...The DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll. Each year the poll courts some form of controversy, be it through its list of overtly commercial-leaning DJs or via other contentious aspects, like when it was accused of bribery (of which the magazine vehemently denied).

The ballot for this year's poll has been announced as officially open on July 12th and runs through to September 15th. The magazine has promised a new voting system for 2014, perhaps in a effort to appear more credible to its detractors. There's no information as yet as to how exactly the new system will be implemented, though details are to be released soon.

The official list of 100 DJs and the #1 winner will be crowned during the Top 100 DJs Awards at ADE’s Amsterdam Music Festival in the Amsterdam ArenA on October 18th. Will Hardwell take out the coveted prize once again? Check out last year's results here and the first ever poll from way back in 1993 here. Oh and rememeber this hilarious joke starring Steve Lawler?

Whilst this video of two clubbers having a gewwwwd time has already done the rounds in Australia after it surfaced back in March, we're certain there are plenty of our fans across the globe who have still not witnessed its magic yet. And what magic it is.

First some context: Sydney's club and nightlife scene has undergone some unfortunate and debilitating changes of late, with the government implementing 1:30am venue lockouts across the city in an effort to curb violence on the streets, which has had much of the local clubbing community up in arms.

Enter: Two of the most trashed clubbers to ever be captured on film. Not long after the controversial new laws were implemented, Munt 1 and Munt 2 were interviewed on national television after being locked out of the venue they were partying at in Sydney's Kings Cross. The resulting footage? Pure comedy gold with all the gurn you could hope for.

Strawberry Fields Drip Feeds More Acts For 2014

The lineup hits for Strawberry Fields 2014 just keep on coming.

Now up to their fourth announcement, the festival has revealed, fittingly, four more names; Maribou State and Pedestrian from the UK and locals Oscar Key Sung and Oisima.

Aside from Ame and Neelix, so far the Victorian festival's lineup this year is notably missing many of the top tier names it boasted in 2013 such as Tiga, Nosaj Thing and Carl Craig. Though that hasn't stopped it from selling tickets for the 2014 event faster than ever before - early birds sold out in just an hour and in two and a half days the festival sold more tickets than it did in four months last year. Impressive.

Strawberry Fields 2014 Lineup So Far:

Hiatus Kaiyote
Neelix
Interactive Noise

Several Hospitalised and Arrested Following Illegal South London Rave

0

According to the BBC, four people were hospitalised and 9 others arrested following an illegal rave in East Croydon on Saturday.

A police van had its window smashed out, and objects were thrown at police by attendees of the 1,000 person party, which took place in an abandoned building on Cherry Orchard Road, shutting down roads and causing halts in public transport services.

After seeing a "dangerously large" number of people heading towards the party on Saturday night, police cordoned off the area, calling for help, when some partygoers became violent.

One raver told the BBC: "It was chaos, people were screaming and throwing things out of the windows."

Croydon Council leader Tony Newman also told the BBC that a clean up operation was taking place.

"I would like to reassure residents the illegal rave which took place in Croydon overnight has been contained, and thanks to the efforts of the police there were no serious injuries to contend with," he said.

Deadmau5: 'Disco had a longer run than EDM has'

0
0

Never one to shy away from letting everyone know exactly what he thinks about EDM (or anything, for that matter), deadmau5 had some harsh words about the future of EDM in a recent interview.

Taking time out from the Gumball 3000 to chat with the Evening Standard, Joel sees the popularity of EDM going the way of disco, which died a famously fast and harsh death in the late '70s.

"It’s already been going down the last couple of years, for me. Maybe not in the industry. Maybe there’ll be a whole new herd of sheep following that shit, and fucking good luck. Disco had a longer run than EDM has, to be honest about it, and that died in a fucking hurry."

"EDM is way more susceptible because that was in a time when they didn’t have mass social media and all that shit. It’s not gonna be me saying, ‘OK, EDM’s done’, and the whole thing falls apart, but I think it’ll eventually fuck itself so hard.”

Deadmau5 is also discontinuing the festival circuit to due to what he sees as greedy promoters.

"Festivals are being branded bigger than the acts, which is totally backwards in my head. It’s ’cause of those acts that you’re a festival! Who wins? The promoter."

"The guy who’s throwing this festival that’s branded bigger than you, that you think you’re awesome for headlining. It’s a shame, so that’s why I’m pulling out.”

Deadmau5 will be working on a one man, immersive show, which he will produce with Hollywood screenwriters and video game developers, due for 2014.

Nick Curly presents Trust Open Air: In Review

0
0

Recently developing his new party concept, Nick Curly's Trust has been to places like BPM and Miami, and now smashed through Barcelona for Off Week.

Having never been to Barcelona before, the city has an electric feel about it, especially during Off Week. It's beautiful, easy to get around, and locations like ZT Hotel Villa Olimpica provide for lush poolside party venues.

Walking in just before 5pm, Shaun Reeves was keeping things rolling along with minimal shuffles. The crowd was still light but happy to be here - the calm before the storm. Groups lounged in the grass behind the pool, smoking joints and cooling off as Reeves begins picking it up with sleazy, bass heavy fair.

Getting high fives and whistles from the growing crowd gathered in front of the booth, Reeves effortlessly pushing the energy higher inch by inch with tracks like Mr. G's "Rum Trip Up and "Space Jazz Carnival" by Azymuth, minimal slices atop grooving bass giving the in the know crowd all the needed.

After grabbing a much needed and delicious mojito, I headed back over to the dance floor to catch D'julz, who was stripping things back after a huge finish by Shaun with his signature punchy house with tracks like the John Jastszebski remix of "Right Here" by Mancini (ManJas). From there, he cooled things down with laid back, funky disco sounds, a small string break getting arms up, people shouting for more.

As D'julz worked back into stomping minimal, it was too much for one man who was clad in neon hat and glasses with skin tight shorts and shirt - humping the ground, flailing about, even launching into the worm at one point - the place loved him.

Taking over for the Bass Culture boss, who finished with plenty more pumping, bass-face rhythms, Tobi Neumann pulled back into deeper, melodic territory with tracks like &ME's "After Dark." The now packed venue was turning into a full fledged party, everyone more than ready for something lighter and upbeat before Guti and Nick Curly finished things off - and Tobi happily obliged.

Cutting into tracks like Murk's timeless " Dark Beat (Addicted To Drums)" and Maceo Plex's huge remix of "Crossfade," fists pumped, smiles abounded and the energy soared, before Tobi ended his time behind the decks with Maceo Plex's edit of Aphex Twin's "Polynomial C."

Guti was up next, and by this time the combination of mojito bar and the Argentinian's funk heavy tech house and techno had the crowd in a frenzy. He powered through his set, clearly enjoying himself now that the sun had gone down. Twisting and turning behind his controller, he worked the packed floor with laid back pleasure, setting things up perfectly for the party's curator to take us home.

Nick Curly kept Guti's momentum going strong, giving the crowd exactly what they came for: Curly's well polished tech house - familiar, energetic, fun, with enough hip shaking rhythm to keep the party charged for hours. It was enough to get Guti in the floor in front of the booth for a dance, just in time for an end of party sit down.

By the time midnight rolled on through, it was clear Nick Curly's Trust had been a hit. The programming was spot on, each artist lending their own special magic to the day while complimenting the whole perfectly. The crowd was classy, happy and friendly, and after a boozy, sweaty day of dancing to top notch tunes, it was time to head back to the hotel for some much needed rest.

Chic Featuring Nile Rodgers Open This Is Hard Rock Ibiza

0
0

You don’t want to be throwing the phrase musical genius about lightly. Terms such as legend and genius can become very easy to use when discussing the older generations of musicians that still grace the stage these days. However, Friday night without question saw a true legend and musical genius take to the stage for the inaugural This Is Hard Rock event.

The new hotel is joining the ranks of venues offering up outdoor events and also following in Ibiza Rocks’ footsteps to offer up live acts on open-air stages. For the first of a string of shows every Friday this summer, Hard Rock made the debut event a special one with disco pioneer, master song writer and king of the funkiest rhythm guitar playing, Nile Rodgers, and his band Chic. Set amongst the luxury suites of the five-star hotel, you can’t help but feel a bit of the high-life rubbing off on you.

Louie Vega and Kenny Dope AKA Masters at Work warmed up the crowd with a fine selection of disco-flecked house cuts on the sleek all-white stage. Suitably warmed up and in good spirits for the evenings musical delights, Nile Rodgers appeared on the stage with a beaming smile, taking photos of the crowd and introducing himself to the audience.

With a blast of sparklers from the stage, the main man and his band dived straight into ‘Everybody Dance’, getting everybody smiling and the smiles stuck for the rest of the night. I found myself grinning to myself on so many occasions throughout the night as the feel-good atmosphere washed over me whilst I looked out over the crowd having such a good time. If you have seen Chic before you'll know what to expect, as they run through hits such as 'Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)' and ‘I Want Your Love’.

Added to the songs, the musicianship on display was incredibly awe-inspiring to watch as the individual members burst into life – screaming trumpet solos led into groovy guitar jams and the absolute down-right funkiest of slap bass wizardry. Independent of the songs it would be a pleasure to watch the musicians just jam on their instruments all night long.

Around the halfway point, the set took on a distinct new chapter as Nile Rodgers explained that he and his band were about to treat us to a number of hit songs that he has written for other artists over the years. If you didn’t know much about Nile Rodgers and you went to see him play, you would be flabbergasted by the amount of classic pop songs the man has written.

They all click into place with the man’s inimitable style of guitar, with its choppy and innately funky rhythms. It’s musical infectiousness at its peak.

‘Upside Down’ morphed into a mash-up of 'Soup for One' and Modjo's 'Lady (Hear me Tonight)', which then morphed into Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ seamlessly, as the crowd reacted with all the vitality that the songs were instilling in them. Another funky wig-out saw the musicians bounce into Sister Sledge’s ‘Lost In Music’.

Then it was time for the one that was always going to get one of the biggest reactions of the night, the biggest song of 2013 by a country mile, Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’. The crowd were singing back all the words with delight. Further renditions of Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ and ‘Le Freak’ followed before it was time to call it a night with ‘Good Times’, which saw the stage full of people dancing and huge explosions of confetti covering the crowd.

Chic trade in the feel-good vibes and they delivered them in abundance. It was magical stuff.
