2014 has been a big year for Sheik ‘N’ Beik thus far! With a number of successful events and a Thursday night residency at Chinatown’s Le Baron, the Sheik ‘N’ Beik family has come a long way. This Friday, May 2nd, they are taking over Meatpacking’s Up & Down nightclub in celebration of their musical leader Julio’s birthday. Julio will be accompanied by Sheik ‘N’ Beik’s talented residents and special guests Pako S, FoNG, Jeffrey Scott, and Holosound.

Julio Santo Domingo is the DJ/producer/mastermind behind Sheik ‘N’ Beik's events and record label. He has traveled the globe DJing and bringing Sheik ‘N’ Beik to Paris, Ibiza, and other cities abroad. Italian talent Pako was born in Naples and had a musical upbringing. At 17, he began organizing events in his hometown as a means to buy his own decks and start learning to DJ. Pako likes to experiment with his sound, but always stays true to his deep house roots. FoNG got his start in 1998 in the Dominican Republic. He was part of a handful of DJs who kick-started what is today’s massive club scene. Making his way over to the U.S., he and Julio found each other and he is one of Sheik ‘N’ Beik’s celebrated residents.

Jeffrey Scott and Holosound are New Yorkers who carry great vibes with them wherever they go. Jeffrey was raised in Virginia and got his start throwing underground warehouse parties (appropriately titled Searchlights) in the state’s rural areas. The parties expanded to Charlottesville and Washington D.C., where he played with artists like Seth Troxler, Magda and Cassy. Jeffrey moved to NYC in 2009, where he crossed paths with Julio. Jeffrey also plays for parties like BlkMarket, Esthetik, Dog and Pony and TBA Brooklyn.

DJ/producer Holosound has dotted the globe with performances in more than 23 countries, every major city in the U.S. and has released records and remixes on labels like Nurvous, HNQO’s Playperview, Glasgow Underground and Ultra. His reputation for quality and consistency has taken him from Tokyo to Toronto, Helsinki to London, Phuket to Estonia, and beyond. He's played with many of the world's top DJs, including Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Audiofly, Blond:ish, Shonky and more, and continues filling rooms and dance floors around the world.

Join Sheik ‘N’ Beik as they step into Up and Down with their talented roster of resident DJs along with a surprise or two. Across two unique floors and environments, expect nothing but the ultimate combination of forward thinking, sexy house and techno.

RSVP to JANDJ@SHEIKNBEIK.COM for admission.

The Emergence of Headphone Culture

$

If you are like most of the Pulse Radio fans and followers, you dedicate copious amounts of time listening to music. You probably listen to music when you sleep, when you cook, even when you are fuming because your boss has told you to file that report on the annual growth of carrots south of Parys. In fact you could be listening to music right at this moment.

Listening to music on the go is no longer just a simple pass time or way to entertain yourself when you are bored. It has become a gigantic sub-culture. In a sense, it seems as though it is no longer what you are listening to that matters but how are you listening to it. People want to be seen sporting the newest, brightest, shiniest set of headphones moreover as some sort of nonsensical expression of their identity.. Some headsets are so crazily priced, one could earn street-cred by just owning the packaging.

Beats by Dre and SkullCandy sealed their corporate fate by cleverly placing their product in the hands of sports stars, celebrity DJs, famed musicians and any prominent fashionista willing to adorn a pair. In the space of 8 years, Beats By Dre has generated a net worth of over 1 billion dollars. Its fiercest competitor SkullCandy rakes in 300 million dollars in annual revenue. New brands such as these, have eclipsed well respected electronics manufacturers who were here long before them and in doing so have set a new precedent for how we listen to music. It’s hard to miss a pair of Beats By Dre. They are the instantly recognizable, cause and catalyst of a global trend in coveted and highly fashionable audio accessories, a must-have item for any quasi social hipster with the desire to upscale his/her social proof.

The allure of an improved social status comes at a cost. So the question remains: Are these newfound flashy and expensively priced headphones really worth it? Are they in fact superior to the Sonys Pioneers and Sennhiesers that have been around for decades?

Time Magazine conducted a study to settle the score and determine whether products like Beats By Dre and SkullCandy match in function what they seem to scream in form. The study, conducted by top electronic pundits put nearly 3000 pairs of headsets through the test in an attempt to present a clear picture to the consumer. 75% of each score was based on the opinion of the expert whilst the remaining 25% covered product specs and overall features i.e. frequency, sensitivity, noise cancelling, etc. The results were not surprising.

The infographic below displays the results for the highest scoring headsets. So before you splash your cash and go for broke, take the time to find out if what is luring you has legs. The results may surprise you and save you  some hard earned money. Ultimately its still your choice. All we can do is try to dispel misconceptions, replace them with facts and hope we succeed in reminding you that all that glitters is not gold.

15 Tracks That Will Rule Ibiza In 2014

$
0
0

Change is always in the wind here in Ibiza. Nights come and go, DJs rise and fall from favour, and tracks become anthems then disappear. So as the season draws near, we take a look at 15 tracks we think will help shape the Ibiza music landscape in 2014. 15 is by no means a comprehensive list, but a quick glance will tell you a few things about the season to come.

Firstly, Maceo Plex will be bigger than ever this season, with an original and remix making our grade. He’s hinted at his own residency, and he’ll most certainly once again be Ibiza's golden boy. Secondly, after a few years of uncertainty and line-up changes, Cocoon looks to return strong in 2014, with no nonsense, heavy hitting line-ups, and an inspired comeback move from Luciano with ‘Origins’ adding that extra special treat to the bill. So With Mondays on our mind, we’ve stacked this list big with likely Cocoon killers.

Of course, we haven’t forgotten DC-10, with plenty of Circoloco and Paradise action to choose from, the incredible and cavernous dance floors of Space, Sankeys’ Basement - one of the best spots on the island to hear stripped back, rumbling funk - and a few crossover hits for good measure. Read on, and let us know your thoughts.

GusGus - Crossfade (Maceo Plex Mix) - Kompakt

Maceo Plex provides GusGus with a moody, sultry rework of ‘Crossfade’ with a big vocal that gives the track major crossover appeal. We’ve already heard this go down heavy once at the early season Solomun +1 party at Pacha Ibiza, and something tells us it won’t be the last.

Mind Against - Several Times - Life & Death

Much like Tale of Us, Mind Against are a Berlin based Italian duo. And much like Tale Of Us' 2013 summer hit, 'Another Earth,' the wild synth lines and driving energy of this futuristic techno/house hybrid all but guarantees 'Several Times' will find its way into a lot of sets this summer. Think ENTER. at Space or Cocoon at Amnesia main rooms.

Steve Lawler - Do Ya (Hot Since 82 Remix) -  VIVa Music

Produced and remixed by two of the best in the game - veteran Steve Lawler and newly minted Hot Since 82 - 'Do Ya' is one of those tracks we'll hear just about everywhere this season. With just enough crossover appeal and undeniable energy, Hot Since 82's remix of 'Do Ya' will turn dance floors upside down from Ushuaia to Sankeys.

Bicep - NRG106 - AUS Music

New music from Bicep is always something to get excited about, and their return to Will Saul’s AUS Music is no exception. It’s a pure analogue jam from the Belfast pair, as always, with a thumping kick, scattered hi-hats and a throbbing bass line. Main Room at Space for We Love..., it’s gonna go off.

Fur Coat - There's No Time (wAFF Warehouse Mix) - Hot Creations

Everything wAFF releases seems to go down a treat (‘Puke It Up’, anyone?) and this will be no different. The Leeds man idiosyncratic production creates so much tension with wild percussion and acid synth lines, this one is sure to contribute to some dance floor heat at Jamie Jones’ Paradise.

Sharam feat. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Tripi - Play It Say It

This is the first release on Seth Troxler’s new label, Play it, Say it, and to no one’s surprise, Sharam's newest effort already making big waves. The breakdown, featuring Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, is incredible in building atmosphere before that huge bass line drops back in. With Deep Dish reunited and playing Space Ibiza's opening fiesta, we're already chomping at the bit to see how this goes down on the club's Funktion 1's. Cue dance floor mayhem.

Ilario Alicante - Wax Weapon (Original Mix) - Cocoon Recordings

This Cocoon young gun expertly builds tension with a droning synth, pushed along by stomping drums and minimal rhythms, all leading to a creepy melody, making the aptly dubbed 'Wax Weapon' practically gift wrapped for a Papa Sven main room set.

Maceo Plex - Conjure Balearia - Ellum Audio

Is there anything Maceo Plex doesn't do large? Once again, the man on fire delivers a massive, emotive track in the form of 'Conjure Balearia.' With the track title obviously alluding to the White Isle, Maceo Plex will most definitely have his sights set on destroying the Ibizan dance floors wherever he plays with this one ready in his arsenal.

Oliver $ & Jimi Jules - Pushing On -  Defected

Using a very familiar soulful vocal sample Oliver $ and Jimi Jules serve up a classic house cut that will certainly be pushed by the Defected crew at Booom! Ibiza, as well as in bars, beaches and your mates' after parties all summer long.

System2 - Smoke & Mirrors (Hanfry Martinez Remix) - System2

Mancunian duo System2 have recently signed to Steve Lawler’s VIVa Music, so expect support from VIVa Warriors at Sankeys Ibiza this season. The original is a quality jackin’ house number, perfect for ONNO and crew at ANTS at Ushuaia Ibiza, and his handily reworked by Spaniard Hanfry Martinez, turning the track into a bass heavy, dubbed-out, peak-time tool perfect for Sankeys' dark, low-slung basement. And with support already coming in from the Apollonia, Jamie Jones, and Dubfire, both sides are sure to make the rounds just about everywhere this summer.

Djebali – Ideal Ghetto Touch - djebali

It’s all jacking rhythms and relentless bass lines on this one, as Djebali brings the goods with a storming house groove, which will go down perfectly on the terrace at Cricoloco at DC-10, and is sure to see some major support from the Apollonia boys. Read our review here

Josh Wink - Are You There (Ben Klock Remix) - Ovum

Berghain resident Ben Klock gives Josh Wink’s ’98 classic the remix treatment here, providing a raw, stripped back and banging cut of break-beats and acid. Dark stuff as you would expect from Mr. Klock. Expect this to get more than a few heads spinning like tops come the early morning hours at Cocoon this summer.

Taches - Turn of Phrase (PAWSA Remix) - Nervous Records

Nagging vocals and crazy, rapid fire 909 percussion give this track the dance floor killer credentials. A powerful remix from PAWSA, ‘Turn Of Phrase’ is the perfect weapon for destroying the Terrace on Tuesdays for Carl Cox’ at Space Ibiza.

See You Next Tuesday - Nicole Moudaber & Carl Cox - MOOD

Another more obvious pick for Carl Cox at Space this year is his recent collaboration the Queen of Techno, Nicole Moudaber.'See You Next Tuesday' sold out in five days according to Moudaber, and as the title suggests, was born from their incredible relationship behind the decks at The Revolution last summer. Carl and Moudaber back to back, this track, and say goodbye.

Forget - Patrick Topping - Hot Creations

Hot Creations' hottest young star, Patrick Topping, strikes again with his 'Boxed Off' EP, and while we love the title track, the driving bass line, spin tingling vocal and overall simplicity of the track make it a straight forward hit made for dance floors - something that can matter more than just about anything else come August. EXIT Festival Tour: Ministry Of Sound

With the 15th edition of EXIT Festival taking place this year, the world famous Serbian party has many surprises up its sleeve. Along with one of the biggest back-to-back lineups of any festival in the world (and could quite easily be the biggest), EXIT is once again heading on a world tour.

The next stop on tour is the legendary Ministry of Sound in London this Saturday, May 3rd, and not surprisingly, EXIT is bringing some heavy hitters along for the ride, including German heavyweights M.A.N.D.Y., Moda and Moda Black label bosses Jaymo & Andy George, Waze & Odyssey, and special guest Max Cooper, with EXIT Tour resident SE7EN in the Box.

So we caught up with Ministry of Sound promoter and talent booker Jodie Layton to find out how their relationship with EXIT came about, a few of her favourite memories from the festival, and why she thinks its important.

Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with Ministry and what you do for them? I’ve worked for Ministry for six years now and it has become my home. I work in both promotions and talent booking.

How did the relationship between Ministry and EXIT come about? We have so much love and respect for the festival and its musical ethos, that it made perfect sense for us to host the London launch. We hosted the EXIT launch party last year and had a fantastic time so we jumped at the chance to do it again this year.

What are some of your best memories of EXIT? Watching Scuba & George Fitzgerald last year on the last day of the festival.

What does EXIT mean to you, and why do you think it's an important festival? EXIT Festival is important due to the ethos and history behind the festival itself. It came from the fall of communism and overthrowing Milosevic, and started off as a 100 day event where people celebrated being free of communism. What other festival has that much history and meaning behind it?

Can you tell us a bit about what you've got planned for Ministry's part of the EXIT tour? Our line up for the Box includes M.A.N.D.Y. Special guest Max Cooper (pictured), Waze & Odyssey, Jaymo & Andy George and Exit Resident SE7EN. Hosting the 103 is Exit Festival’s London brand partner Spacestation, they are bringing with them Tom Demac, Doorly, Ossie and Residents Jordan Wade and Alexander Parade.

Come celebrate 15 years and a Best Major Festival Award win with EXIT at Ministry of Sound this Saturday, May 3rd. More info here.

DJ Rashad Died From a Blood Clot, Not Drugs

Family members of the late DJ Rashad, who unexpectedly passed away last weekend, have confirmed that the footwork/juke pioneer’s death was caused by complications arising from a blood clot in his leg. UK label Hyperdub relayed the news to the Guardian.

Initial reports stated that the Chicago police suspected a drug overdose as the cause of death based on drug paraphernalia that was found near his body, but this was related to marijuana and not hard drugs.

DJ Rashad’s cousin reports that the coroner determined that a blood clot in his leg led to his death. Apparenlty, DJ Rashad complained about an ache in his leg but no one considered the possibility that it would be life-threatening given his young age of 34.

DJ Rashad's latest album 'Double Cup' was ranked eigth in Rolling Stone's best dance albums of 2013 and was considered one of the top 30 dance albums by the Guardian in the same year.

The latest video to be released by IMS from its recent summit in Los Angeles is the engaging conversation between dance music heavyweights Giorgio Moroder and Pete Tong. Giorgio’s accomplishments in the music world include producing Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and co-producing Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning album ‘Random Access Memories.’ Pete Tong’s most recent major achievement was being awarded the MBE by the Queen of England.

The conversation kicked off with Giorgio reciting the famous line from Daft Punk’s “Giorgio By Moroder:” “My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everyone calls me Giorgio.” From there, the two chatted casually about the evolution of their respective careers and how DJing has changed over the years.

Giorgio asked Pete about his recent move to Los Angeles. Tong stated that “LA is inspiring, it’s opening up many doors and it just feels right to be here.” They also spoke about Pete’s “All Gone” music brand and platform and the origins of its name. Spotlight on Up & Down

Meatpacking’s Up & Down nightclub has been making waves in the nightlife scene since it open earlier this year. Referred to as ‘a wonderland for people at night’ by the Wall Street Journal, Up & Down has been featured in major media publications like Vogue, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily and Us Weekly.

Owned by The Butter Group (Richie Akiva, Scott Sartiano and Ronnie Madra) and taking over the space formerly home to Nell’s and The Darby, the club re-opened during Fashion week and was subsequently host to a slew of high profile parties hosted by the likes of Rag & Bone, Prabal Gurung, Galore Magazine and Jeremy Scott. The club is also host to Beige, the longtime mostly gay party, on Tuesday nights.

Situated on 14th Street between 7th and 8th Ave, Up & Down takes partygoers back to the days when both the upstairs and downstairs were accessible for partying in most NYC clubs. It is a dramatic change from The Darby, which only allowed guests on the first floor. The 9,000 sq. ft. space (4,500 sq. ft. per floor) boasts 17 banquettes upstairs and 14 tables downstairs.

Each floor can accommodate 272 guests. The upper level is set up like a more traditional nightclub while the bottom transforms from more of a lounge to a nightclub as the evening progresses.

The original Nell’s phone booth adds a nice touch to the venue, and doubles as a portal to a private karaoke room, which is set to transform into different design aesthetics several times throughout the year.

Quentin Tarantino and Orlando Bloom are among the many recognizable faces to have enjoyed an evening at Up & Down. In the few months since its opening, Up & Down has proven to be one of Meatpacking’s most promising new venues.

New York's Sheik 'N' Beik is taking over Up & Down this Friday night to celebrate its founder Julio's birthday! Come down and listen to the sounds of Julio as well as Sheik 'N' Beik residents and special guests Pako S, Jeffrey Scott, Holosound, and FoNG. The party is quickly shaping up to be the place to be this weekend. Don't miss out - RSVP to JANDJ@SHEIKNBEIK.COM for admission.  We'll see you there!
