Laneway Festival Detroit 2014 Cancelled

The Detroit spinoff of Australia's popular St. Jerome's Laneway Festival has been forced to cancel this year due to timing and lineup issues.

A statement from promoter Danny Rogers was posted to the festival's facebook page outlining the reasons in full.

"We’ve decided to postpone Laneway Festival Detroit this year due to timing," the statement reads. "A big thanks to all of you for your support and interest in the event. We had an amazing time last year and hope to return in 2015!"

"We tried to get the very few acts that we felt would be appropriate for Laneway and none of them were available. We had one that went all the way to the wire and then changed its mind at the very last minute – bless their beautiful heart too, they were under so much pressure to be everywhere and anywhere and something had to give. We decided that we needed to be honest with ourselves and sit it out this year and review it again next year."

The inaugural Laneway Detroit last year boasted the likes of The National and Chvrches alongside Aussie big-hitters Flume and Chet Faker.

Groovin The Moo Maitland In Review

$

It's not often that you get to experience something different. Music festivals were once a great way to see your favourite artists in one place on the one, cost-effective ticket. It was also fantastic and profitable for promoters; the club scene had begun to stagnate in the early 200s and the gargantuan appearance fees being charged by superstar DJs could be covered by massive crowds. Unfortunately for both punters and promoters alike, the market reached saturation point several years ago and once guaranteed sold-out events have since departed the Australian summer forever (Good Vibrations, We Love Sounds and Parklife to name but a few).

 photo gtm6_zps51baa253.jpg

Groovin' the Moo is a bit of an oddity for your regular, electronic music-loving fan. Visiting Australia's regional centres exclusively, GTM kicked off in 2005 and although originally the domain of independent Australian bands, the lineup has expanded in recent years to include international, hip hop and electronic acts. With that, we ventured north from Sydney to Maitland (pop. 67,478) to sample GTM for ourselves.

This year, GTM showcased international acts such as Disclosure, Dizzee Rascal and Robert Delong alongside locals The Presets, Architecture in Helsinki, The Jezabels and Karnivool. The event is heavily supported by national alternative music broadcaster Triple J, reflected by the likes of The Kite String Tangle, Wave Racer and Hottest 100 winner Vance Joy.

 photo gtm1_zpsa419a4ab.jpg

 photo gtm3_zps1582ba76.jpg

Having experienced a true country fair before (Daft Punk Wee Waa 2013) we expected GTM to be similar, but without the show judging. However, GTM was an incredibly fun experience and a well-executed event. The previous day's rain had turned the Maitland Showground into a mud bath, and anyone who made the wrong footwear choice quickly abandoned any cares and embraced the muck. Despite being an all-ages event, alcohol was available to those old enough and sideshow alley to entertain those who were not, and there were plenty of well-mannered country cops to keep everyone's spirits high and in check.

Musically, local rockers Kingswood played hard and with awesome energy. Illy and Thundamentals made the Aussie hip hop presence indelibly felt, and The Jezabels were absolutely astonishing; its no surprise that two days later they were playing the Sydney Opera House. On the live electronic music front, The Naked and Famous were tight and Dizzee Rascal destroyed the main stage. Despite GTM's roots, two electronic acts were chosen to close the event with The Presets holding court on the main stage and Disclosure playing a live set in a gigantic circus tent, without a doubt the highlight of the day.

 photo gtm5_zps2414e49e.jpg

 photo gtm4_zps1aac7465.jpg

A few moments stand out which could only have happened at GTM: What So Not's parents stage diving in the circus tent, stage security looking painfully undecided on the question of whether to ditch their ice creams to tackle a stage invader, and Dizzee giving East London big ups to his Maitland massive. Final verdict? Different, fun, mud fights..and not a single Jersey/Geordie Shore extra in sight.

Phonat Drops 'Never' EP

Italian born, London based DJ and producer Phonat has just released a brand spanking new EP. Riding high on the success of 2013s 'Identity Theft' EP, Phonat's follow-up 'Never' is more of the trademark glitchy electronica audiences have come to expect.

'Never' is a collection of two Phonat originals, plus two remixes. The title track is Phonat at his finest, blending futuristic sounds with some heavy, driving basslines. Track two 'Phase to Face' is a twisted IDM banger, its robotronic soundscpaes pushing listeners into the next dimension.

Growing up on funk and dance, Phonat quickly developed a taste for bass-driven electronic music. The 'Never' EP recognizes those pioneers of British electronica who laid the platform for artists like Phonat to flourish. With wraps coming from everyone from Pitchfork to Skrillex, he's gotta be doing something right.

The EP's title track 'Never' recently got picked up by Australian tastemakers Triple J and will gain regular airplay on the station.

'Never' is out now throught OWSLA and ONELOVE.

Avicii and Coldplay Join Forces For 'A Sky Full Of Stars'

It's a pretty simple formula. Take two pop superstars, lock them in a room together, and hey presto: Instant Classic!

That was probably what Avicii and Coldplay's Chris Martin were thinking when they joined forces for 'Sky Full Of Stars'. Unfortunately, things didn't work out as planned...

The collaboration is a pretty lackluster affair. It borrows from the 'talents' of either artist, but gets the best from neither. Martin throws out some typically cringe-worthy lyrics, while Avicii throws up more of the same mind-numbing commercial trash. NEXT!

The tune has been written off from all corners. So said StoneyRoads "It's a mediocre-at-best offering from both, and seems like your pretty general reach-out-to-shmuch-audiences-worldwide."

'A Sky Full Of Stars' brings to a staggering halt the juggernaut of good press that had been generated ahead of the new Coldplay release 'Ghost Stories'. The news of Martin's separation from Gwyneth Paltrow would have excited Coldplay fans no end, however this collaboration might encourage fans to manage their expectations.

Uber Ruled Illegal In NSW

Bad news for Sydney clubbers today with popular ride-sharing service Uber ruled illegal in NSW, reports Pedestrian TV.

Transport NSW today clarified that the Uber model does not fit into the pre-existing Passenger Transport Act.

“The law is clear and has not changed: if a NSW driver is taking paying members of the public as passengers, the driver and the vehicle must operate in accordance with the Passenger Transport Act," reads the statement from the NSW Transport department.

This means that no driver can accept payment for a taxi-like service unless they are properly trained and have received accreditation as stated in the Act. Those who operate in breach of the act could face prosecution and fines that run to a maximum of a whopping $110,000.

Uber is part of an emerging ride-sharing trend that connects users in need of a lift with people in cars willing to drive. Payments are made via credit card, so no actual money changes hands or is kept on board by any of the drivers, and the cost to the passengers are, in some cases, up to 50% less expensive than regular taxi services.

The new ruling is unortunate news for Sydney clubbers, with Uber offering affordable transport deals to many clubs, parties and venues.

Uber's Ride-Sharing App Declared Illegal In NSW

Bad news for Sydney clubbers today with Uber's new low cost ride-sharing service ruled illegal in NSW, reports Pedestrian TV.

The new ruling affects Uber's new low cost ride-sharing service that was rolled out last week, which allows for non taxi drivers to offer a taxi-like service. The company's regular car hire service is not illegal.

The government ruling is a blow for Sydney clubbers, as the low cost ride-sharing service could have been a cheaper way for punters to find their way home after a night out.

Space Ibiza's Sunday night extravaganza has revealed a huge selection of the UK’s hottest talent to hold down regular slots on the decks this summer.

After the success of his one-off appearance last year, Sasha will be returning to We Love... Space in 2014 along with the Last Night On Earth nights that he presides over. Sasha adds, "Space has always been the natural home for me in Ibiza. It's the club I have had most association with over the years. I can't wait to get back there on a regular basis this summer for my Last Night On Earth parties and I'm excited that I get to mix it up between the terrace and the discotheque. It can't start soon enough!"

James Zabiela will also be returning for his impressive 13th year on the run at We Love… Space, and will once again be hosting his Born Electric label nights. Paul Woolford is another veteran and We Love… mainstay who will hold down a 2014 residency after many successful years, and dubstep pioneer turned eclectic selector Skream will be bringing his house and disco influenced sets to We Love… Space for the first time this year, as will Ben UFO, who was also influenced by the early dubstep and bass scene in London. Ben UFO has gained huge praise for his genre defying sets and his vast musical knowledge at such a young age, and after playing We Love… for the past few years, he’s been handed his first residency.

Three more artists riding on a wave of success and holding their own at the forefront of British electronic music are Bicep, Dusky and Disclosure who complete the exciting array of residents confirmed for this year’s parties at Space. Djebali - Ideal Ghetto Touch / Juicy Street

Djebali
'Ideal Ghetto Touch / Juicy Street'
djebali

Parisian Djebali is all about the groove. The influence of the likes of French contemporaries such as Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom is always evident in this man’s productions, and this EP is no exception, as the Frenchman returns with another vinyl only release on his own imprint. An organic, back to basics approach runs throughout, as all the EP is exclusively produced with analogue gear and pressed straight to wax, ensuring all the subtle nuances that this approach brings remain uncompromised.

Since 2011, Djebali has been releasing his productions via his own label on limited runs of vinyl. Always deep, and possessing an effortless control of groove, Djebali is fast becoming an experienced practitioner in creating tools for the dance floor. “Ideal Ghetto Touch” is all about the heads down moments on the dance floor, locking you into the infectious groove that the bass-line creates, as the tight, skipping percussion holds the track together, and warm chords and synth lines add colour. This is certainly the kind of peak-time DC-10 terrace tool that would no doubt be at home in the middle of a set from the Apollonia crew.

On the flip, Djebali takes things deeper with blissed out house trip, “Juicy Street.” Here, the bubbling synths create a hypnotic atmosphere perfect for bringing the mood down with trippy organ inflections and utterances thrown into the mix. This one definitely conjures up thoughts and feelings of after party sunrises. Two cuts of perfect White Isle fare.

DGTL Festival 2014: In Review

$

A plethora of great music spread across a beautiful weekend in Amsterdam is as appealing as a curry to a drunken, and this year's DGTL Festival had plenty of talent and sunshine

With the weather in summer mode and the festival goers in full force, the near packed audience were queuing from the get go. Upon arrival, you are met by a crane over shadowing the site with a huge 30ft DGTL sign gently hanging from the ceiling. After staring at the sign for around 5 minutes, I was met by a stranger who kindly explained that the crane shaft was in fact a hotel as well. Talk about multitasking.

True to form, and something that has become a festival normality these days, was the annoying but somewhat self explanatory plastic coins that littler your pockets. The little nuggets definitely cause less chaos at the bar, but they are so easy to lose. Further more, it was evident that the organisers had gone all out on considering the food installments. There was a nice mix of health and stodgy outlets covering most of your needs.

Musically, they tried to cover all bases with six tents portraying different genres of house, techno, bass and breaks. My friends and I gave The Red Bull arena some serious attention, as the line up consisting of two personal favourites, Axel Boman and Midland. Bowman cut up a serious mix of melody and groove within his set, while Midland took a heavier stance on proceedings with a more bass heavy fair. With a packed audience to boot, he never let down the ravers and offered some hands in the air drops on the crowd.

Kompakt held the main arena for the show, with Michael Mayer performing a somewhat early set. Kompakt, who are well known for their sultry, no nonsense efforts, glided through the whole afternoon and evening with some serious clout. Kolsch and Gui Boratto finished off the evening with heavier, crowd pleasing techno, with Gui performing a live show and Kolsch rounding off the night perfectly.

Other shining lights on the Saturday were the Crew Love team, who literally parked their tour bus outside the festival. The disco dons of Wolf+Lamb, Soul Clap, Tanner Ross and co., threw the rule book out of the window and played back-to-back all night. Taking the edge off the heavier styles flowing through the other tents, it was nice to have the Crew Love team in tow to relax the vibe.

Sunday set a different tone. With the weather still on our side, the crowd poured in for a second day early doors to soak up all the rays. Innvervisions had a huge line up with Mano Le Tough playing a day time set to to what was a full arena from start to finish. Of course Dixon and Ame took most of the credit with their sublime music knowledge, but support from Mano made it more plausible to be in there for nearly the whole afternoon.

Red Bull once again had well programmed line up, from KiNK laying down his live show with serious effect, to Floating Points and his rotary mixer collating the best in disco and house, it was a shear joy to be in that aircraft hanger all weekend. Skream rounded the night off after solid performance from Huxley.

Over in the main arena, Hot Since 82, fresh from his Coachella outing, flew straight in to perform an early evening slot. Jamie Jones took over leading into the night with an energy filled curation of tech driven funk, swiftly followed by Pan Pot, who rounded off the whole show with some German enthused techno cuts.

Its true to say that DGTL, alongside many other festivals of similar size in Amsterdam, really do push the boundaries and leave no stone unturned, and with the weather on our side, spirits couldn't have been higher.

Ibiza Veteran Danny Whittle Joins Sankeys Ibiza

$

News about some of Ibiza’s key industry figures has been revealed today with the announcement that Danny Whittle will be joining David Vincent and the Sankeys Ibiza team. Danny Whittle spent 13 years working at the heart of Pacha, as well as co-founding IMS with Pete Tong and Ben Turner. Together with David Vincent’s huge experience of Ibiza and electronic music, the pair will certainly form a formidable business partnership.

Danny says:

“Having known David for almost 18 years it is a pleasure for me to be finally working with him. I first met him when he was running Ministry of Sound in Ibiza, that was the year Ministry went to another level with on the ground and billboard marketing in Ibiza. I think Ministry had more people in Pacha on those Fridays than most of the other days put together. It was this that showed me the amazing ability that David has at promoting nightclubs and building line ups. Since Sankeys moved into the Ibiza music factory offices and we have talked and worked more together it felt almost inevitable we would end up working together. Having watched the rise of Sankeys on Ibiza over the last years I have been inspired by David's work ethic and commitment. I am proud to say that Sankeys and IBZ Entertainment are now working together on many levels, not just in the Ibiza venue but also on Sankeys tours, IBZ Ibiza Dreams Festivals and Sankeys 20th anniversary year. It's a very exciting time for us. The future looks bright, the future looks SANKEYS.”

David Vincent also had this to add:

“Danny is one of my oldest friends on the island and as the Ibiza legend is told we used to work alongside each other at Pacha in 1997 when I ran Ministry and he ran Renaissance. If I wrote the original Ibiza promoters handbook in the 90s, he took my principles and took it onto the next level with what he achieved with Pacha in the 00s which I was always actually jealous of as whilst he was the warmth of Ibiza I was back in cold of the UK. Over the years we have always talked a lot about doing stuff together at some point but we always kept missing each other. It was actually a conversation with Danny which originally opened my eyes that there was a gap in the Ibiza market to open a Sankeys style nightclub. Now the stars have seemed to have aligned as it was the only the other day that Danny asked me if I would be happy for him and his team to join Sankeys this summer, which I of course said yes. I have always said to anyone that you can always learn stuff and only an idiot does not listen to new ideas. With Danny's wealth of knowledge I am sure I will be learning a few new tricks from the great man he is. If I am Brendan Rogers then he is Alex Ferguson and together at Sankeys we feel this is the start of the new Sankeys Dream Team. Watch this space as we are all very happy at Sankeys Headquarters.”
