Circoloco Anzac Day Wrap Up

0
0

At first it looked like the downpour on Sydney was settling in for the day, but not even the sun was going to miss the most highly anticipated party of 2014. At 3pm the heavens opened up and thousands flocked to The Greenwood for an afternoon and evening of quality house music.

Locals Alan Thomas, Rachel May, Shaunbro and Brohn worked up the courtyard into a nice lather (Gabby was sorely missed by her fans), setting the vibe perfectly for the debut set from The Martinez Brothers, who tore things up with a set of bouncy, traditional house music. Man-of-the-moment Dixon then took the baton, with a deep and immersive set which ended on Depeche Mode's classic 'Behind The Wheel'.

Meanwhile in the chapel, those who managed to tear themselves away from The Martinez Brothers were treated to an all-vinyl lesson in how to destroy a room from Prins Thomas. Like only he can, the Norwegian jock ploughed his way effortlessly through undefinable sounds and records you've never heard of, given a solid platform to work with (as always) from CO-OP. The Softwar boys then took over and closed the chapel in style.

Check out some photos of the day below and head to the Finely Tuned facebook for the full catalogue.

Seth Troxler Launches New Label With A Release From Deep Dish's Sharam

Seth Troxler is launching a new label, Play It Say It, with the first release a one-track single from Deep Dish's Sharam.

Troxler says the name of the label comes from stickers that used to appear on vinyl records.

"During the '80s and '90s promos sent to US radio stations often had stickers on them saying, 'Whan You Play It, Say It' to encourage disc jockeys to mention the names of the songs they were broadcasting on air."

 photo play-it-say-it_zps43816247.jpg

'Tripi' is the label's very first release - a collaboration between Sharam and 70s English band Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.

"PiSi is just me putting out records that I've been field testing but have never come out," Troxler explains. "They aren't moody, the critics might hate them, but I know they work a floor and are awesome in that context. This isn't some crazy art thing, just high grade white labels to play in clubs. It's that basic."

'Tripi' is out now on vinyl version and on digital release next month.

Shipping Containers Wash Into Ocean At Perth Festival

Organisers of mini-festival Why Make Sense ran into a spot of bother when a number of decommissioned sea containers that were placed along the shoreline to act as a windbreak and sound proofing washed into the ocean.

Fortunately the containers washed into the sea once the weekend-long event at Port Beach in North Fremantle had already wrapped up. The festival featured international names of Julio Bashmore, T. Williams, Gold Panda and Maribou State. Organiser Saran Bajaj issued a statement yesterday regarding the incident.

“Bad weather from the last twelve hours or so was much worse than anticipated and a large amount of beach sand was displaced which caused the position of the containers to shift,” the statement read. "The containers are not considered to pose risk to public safety. They have been decommissioned, meaning they have holes in them so they are designed to sink, not float. Horizons Touring has taken responsibility for the clean-up and is making clean-up arrangements now.”

 photo beachtanks_zpsafef0af1.jpg

“Although the sea container issue was a mishap the City considers it minor and well managed with no risk to public safety or the beach and its surrounds," City of Fremantle manager of economic development and marketing Tom Griffiths told Perth Now. "On this basis we don’t expect last night’s incident to affect further events of this nature being held at Port Beach or other coastal locations around Fremantle.”

Techno Dog Loves Richie Hawtin, Hates EDM

You know the old saying dogs look like their owners? Well it appears that canines and their owners also share more similarities than simply looks, but also music tastes.

This video proves said theory, with a dog owner rattling off the names of techno, house and EDM DJs, and the results showing the canine clearly prefers the likes of Maceo Plex and Richie Hawtin to Avicii or Steve Aoki. Wonder if he likes Rex The Dog

The Records That Defined Kruse & Nuernberg

With massive support from Pete Tong on their newest EP, "Boom Boom Ciao" on OFF Recordings, Florian Kruse and Nils Nuernberg have once again proved their studio chops. Though this kind of attention is hardly new for the duo, as they've found homes on labels like Noir, Liebe*Detail, Stil Vor Talent, Exploited, Rejected, and Moodmusic, remixing for the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Groove Armada, Mario Basanov, Fred Everything and Wolf+Lamb over the years. So we asked this Hamburg based duo to share some of the sounds and songs that shaped who they are today.

Florian Kruse

Kool & The Gang - Summer Madness

This song is smooth like butter and so tight. I get goose bumps every single time they play that lead sound.

Janet Jackson feat. Q-Tip - Got Til It's Gone

This is one of my all time favorites. I had this one on my Walkman, bought it on CD and have it now on my iPhone (and it probably stays there forever). The smooth chords and the punchy beat combined with Janet's voice is pure gold to my ears - and Q-Tip is simply the best rapper on the planet.

Metro Area - Caught Up

When it comes to house music, 'Metro Area' influenced me a lot. When they put out a new EP, it was for me like Christmas and my birthday at the same time.

Nils Nuernberg LTJ Bukem - Atlantis (I Need You)  This tune popped up on an old cassette of a friend of mine ages ago and pretty much opened the door to electronic music for me. Around that time this music was mind-bending for me, and I so wanted to get to know this genre.

Foo Fighters - Everlong  I was into punk rock, metal, and the like for quite a while in my teens, and I still listen to quite a lot of it when I drive in the car (does that sound like I am an aggressive driver?) to my parents place in the countryside. Maybe because this music makes me reminiscing the good old days of where I felt most sheltered and had a good time with my friends when there were no mobile phones or internet and we did stuff with our hands, just like the music - handmade! Plus, Dave Grohl is the coolest guy on the planet! Definitely my all time hero!

U2 - With Or Without You

I mean, how can you not love that song? It's pure emotion. From the production point of view U2 was and is always one step ahead. A milestone of a song!

Nicole Moudaber Interview April 19

Nicole Moudaber - See You Next Tuesday

0
0

It all started one night in New York. Carl Cox was having dinner with his longtime friend and prodigy, Nicole Moudaber, before his show at Output."Right, I have an idea for us but so far it's only a bassline – a four second loop," he told her, "And by the way, we're putting it out on MOOD."

The rest, so they say, was history. That four second loop evolved into the acclaimed “See You Next Tuesday” EP, a split release from the legendary producer and the queen of techno, who got her start under the Drumcode label before launching her own imprint, MOOD Records, in 2012. The original mix is your classic rolling techno, infused with the driven bass and breaks that we’ve come to love from both Moudaber and Cox. The second version takes a deeper, groovier approach, layering in Moudaber’s favored percussive elements. "On both versions of the track, there are elements of each we provided together. There isn't a ‘his mix, my mix,’ it was a joint effort," Moudaber explains, "We both had the same input really. We speak the same language."

“See You Next Tuesday” isn’t the first time the pair have collaborated, having coproduced "Chemistry" in 2011, but it is proof of how well they work together. "He's the most knowledgeable person I know in the industry," Moudaber says, "His understanding of the music is just mind blowing and he follows his heart and ears." We caught up with Nicole Moudaber to find out more about the EP, her favourite mood to create in, and her pick for the most underrated DJ of 2014.

Being of Lebanese descent, born and raised in Nigeria, a Londoner, and part time Ibiza resident, how do all of these different cultures find their way into your music? It’s a plus for sure. Blending different cultures and taking in what I grew up with and the places I’ve lived can only enrich me musically.

I’ve read that you used to be a trance-head when during your club kid days. What was your favorite trance track from back in the day? I remember a track from Perfecto Records called "Bullet In The Gun," and I have a big grin on my face writing this because I used to love this track! Cheese can be very good when it's done so well - can’t argue with that.

Totally agree. Do you still listen to trance today? No, I don’t listen to it today! But good trance is so euphoric and emotional, you instantly have your hands in the air, waving them around.

You’ve said that your time spent as a promoter, throwing events and curating line-ups. Is something that has translated into your mixing? Can you elaborate on this? What is your golden rule when DJing? I tend to warm myself up when I play from start to finish. The hardest part is the warm-up set, it’s key to a great night, and I used to program my nights musically by selecting the right DJs according to what their sound is like and build from there. Like you said, this is reflected in my sets as well.

Back in 2009, Carl Cox famously named you as the most underrated DJ of the year. Who would you name as the most underrated DJ of 2014 so far? Nathan Barato. He’s excellent and will go very far. He’s talented and he’s got the drive and is very passionate about the music. I love everything about him and as a person he’s real, down-to-earth and funny.

I’m listening to your Essential Mix as I write out these questions. I always forget what a banger this set is. What are some tracks that are essential to your mixes? Anything from Carl Craig and Ben Klock!

Let's talk about the “See You Next Tuesday” EP with Carl Cox. I know it started with a four second loop, just a bass line. When you listened to that first soundbite, what was your initial reaction? Were you instantly inspired? Instantly. That bass-line doesn’t sound like anything else. Only Carl can come up with shit like that! My jaw dropped both from excitement and from the thought of being challenged. But we turned it into something great. It sounds so good when you play it out especially at In The MOOD Miami pool party. The launch was off the charts, we sold out in 5 days!

So, the EP was clearly a labour of love for the two of you. What was the biggest challenge in working on the EP? It was a very easy flow actually, we bounced over the files back and forth, tweaking it as we went along. It was a natural process. Traveling continuously was the only challenge on this project.

The two tracks on the EP are an original mix, and a deeper, groovier mix. Are they alter egos? Not exactly. They are simply difference facets different persona, born from the same language.

And what was it like putting out such an important release under your own label? MOOD is about the music initially, but having someone like Carl wanting to put out on the label is a cool stamp of approval. He is without a doubt one of the coolest cats in the business.

Are you so sick of people asking you whether it’s difficult being a female in male-dominated industry? To be honest, I think constantly making that distinction is sometimes part of the problem. Thoughts? Unfortunately, when journalists pick up on something the rest will follow. This is why we see a repeat in this subject and the only difference between men and women is that men can piss standing up. Well, that’s debatable also!

Live Nation & Insomniac Sued By Festival Volunteers

0
0

Live Nation and its EDM festival and event partner Insomniac Events are the target of a major class action lawsuit brought on by festival volunteers seeking pay for their work. According to the suit, the companies lured volunteers to avoid paying for labor at their events, but didn’t properly compensate them based on the Fair Labor Standards Act, which requires all workers to be paid at least the minimum wage ($7.25 per hour).

The suit claims that Live Nation and Insomniac intentionally misclassified workers as volunteers to avoid paying them wages and overtime, failing to track the time they worked, and allowing them to work for a for-profit company. In addition, the lawsuit alleges that the companies violated state law by not providing the volunteers with the required rest and meal breaks during the day.

The positions were advertised differently than what volunteers experienced. They were told that they would receive free admission to the festivals with “meals, water, parking, and time off to enjoy the festival.” In reality, many workers apparently weren’t given time off as promised. They were also required to submit a “refundable volunteer deposit” to make sure that they fulfilled their duties, which resulted in some volunteers effectively paying Live Nation and Insomniac to work.

Watch: Hans Zimmer in Conversation with Junkie XL

The third video conversation from IMS Engage 2014 has just been released, this time featuring the enlightening dialogue that took place between legendary film composer Hans Zimmer, perhaps best known for the musical soundtrack of films like “Gladiator," “The Dark Knight,” and “12 Years A Slave;” and renowned electronic music artist Junkie XL who is responsible for the compositions of “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Inception,” and “300: Rise of an Empire,” among others.

Hans chatted about the evolution of electronic music and how he was inspired after attending many Kraftwerk shows, leading him into the genre and then eventually into film scoring. Junkie XL shared his similar path from being a DJ to focusing on film.

Three quotes stand out from the talk – here they are:

"Electronic music lends itself to an abstract way of storytelling, so it keeps evolving. There's a whole movement truly driving music further and there is no other music innovating as much as film music" - Hans Zimmer

"There is a history of film composers dying literally on their last cue, you know... but fuck it, that's rock and roll!" - Hans Zimmer

"The stress and the pressure mounts but the moments of joy -- I have never felt so strong as I have in film. The lows, when you can't deliver, those are new lows and I have never felt that low as when I was just Junkie XL, an electronic artist." - Junkie XL

Josh Wink: 20 Years of Ovum

0

Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings is 20 years old, and to celebrate properly he's taking Ovum on a world tour.  Over the past two decades, the label's output has included releases by the likes of Josh Wink, Loco Dice, Davide Squillace, Ambivalent, Steve Bug, and many more.  In less than a month, Josh will take the decks at the inaugural Mysteryland USA, set to take place on the historic Woodstock 1969 festival grounds.  We had a chance to catch up with Josh ahead of the highly anticipated festival to chat a little about the label's 20th anniversary, the future of Ovum Recordings, why he's excited to play at Mysteryland USA, his experiences playing in America, and what else he has in store in the coming months.

Firstly, congratulations on 20 years of Ovum Recordings! To kick off the year, Ovum released a special remix by Ben Klock of your 1996 classic, ‘Are You There’, in March. Can you give us a hint as to whom else we can expect releases and remixes from on Ovum this year? We're still looking into our vast catalog of artists and songs and figuring out which legacy songs we'd like to re-release and remix. However, the next track we're thinking of is DJ Dozia's "Pop Culture." This was an early release on the label that fetches big money on Discogs as we have never released it digitally. So far we have remixes from Ambivalent and Joris Voorn on board and there may be additional remixers. It will be an amazing package for sure! And thanks for the kind words on the 20 years!

How has your process for selecting tracks and remixes changed over the years? Would you say you’re pickier these days? No. I don't think we're pickier. We've always kept our integrity on what we sign, and that still continues to this day. We feel that if the music is right, it's right. We try not to sign tracks on whether it is trendy or popular, but how it makes us feel. We strive to find things that we think are timeless.

Your sound has remained consistent throughout your career and we love you for that. Have you ever felt tempted to experiment withdifferent genres (either within electronic music or outside of it)? Thanks for your words. I am happy that I have been able to create my own sound and stay with it over all these years. I have recorded drum and bass, ambient, trip hop etc… yet, I haven't worked outside of electronic music. I look forward to moving into producing other people and other styles of music in the future.

You don’t collaborate often but is there anyone in particular you’d like to do so with this year? You're right. I haven't. We have tossed around ideas over the years, but nobody that I can 100% say in particular. This year I have been focusing on making music myself, as I have recorded four new singles since February, and we look forward to releasing them. There is one track that I have a collaboration in mind for, but it is still in the works. Everyone will have to wait and see.

You’ve stated that ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ is your biggest regret. Why, if you don’t mind us asking? It really helped open doors but it also helped close a lot too. That's what I was talking about. But in the end… The positive out weighed the regrets and negative!

You’re playing in the Vinyl Only tent at Mysteryland next month. In regards to the festival, what are you most looking forward to? I've really enjoyed the process of looking through all my older vinyl and preparing for the festival. I am really looking forward to playing vinyl. I am also looking forward to being a part of such a great festival in an amazing location.

What do you love about playing in America? It is exciting for me to see the growth in America and how these festivals and the music are exploding here. I am an American DJ, but for many years I have been more focused on playing overseas as that was where the best gigs were. I have been playing more in the States recently and the crowds have been amazing. I am looking forward to playing more in America again, as I miss it.

What else is on the horizon for Josh Wink and Ovum Recordings? We're focusing this year on doing Ovum stages at festivals, and Ovum parties at clubs and venues all over the world to help celebrate 20 years of Ovum.

We're going to continue on releasing great music and decide on which tracks we want to re-release from our catalog. And lastly we are going to release more of my own music, which I can't wait to share with everyone!
