Fresh Blood: Motez

$

When it comes to Australian entrants to our Fresh Blood series, Sydney has been hogging all the limelight. That's why this week we're pleased to present Adelaide's Motez Obaidi, the Baghdad born beatsmith who's been turning heads with his garage-infused house productions that are being dropped into DJ sets of big hitters such as Claude VonStoke, Eats Everything and Diplo. The guy's no slouch at remixing either, reworking everyone from Frank Ocean and Justin Timberlake, to Aussie 90s dance-pop duo Madison Avenue.

This month Motez is set to play alongside Destructo, Clockwork and Oliver for the debut HARDstraylia tour, which hits Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Freemantle. In anticipation of the tour, Motez's Fresh Blood mix doubles up as a promo mix for the HARD tour. Enjoy!

Pulse: You were born in Baghdad. Can you tell us a little bit about your family's journey to Australia? Hi and thanks for having me. I grew up in a suburb called Al-Mansur in Western Baghdad. My dad got one of those treacherous boat journeys to Australia in 1999 seeking a better life for us outside of troubled Iraq and he finally got his permanent residency in 2006 and that’s when he asked my mum, sister and I to join him and that’s where it all started for me here.

How and when did you get into the DJing/producing game? I got into production way before DJing, I started using computer software many years ago and after moving to Australia I started getting a little bit more into DJing merely to promote my music and to get it heard in venues and clubs.

You recently remixed Madison Avenue's 'Don't Call Me Baby'. Do you have a soft spot for commercial pop/house tunes? I didn’t think about it that way, music is music. It was a little bit daunting to be honest because it's part of the Australian music “hall of fame”, as well as around the world and I wanted to make sure I did it justice, so there was that worry might be sacrilege in some way. I wanted to give that tune a little bit of a modern house take, make it a bit more bass-oriented and it worked.

What's your favoured production gear? Are you a software or hardware man? I own a couple of hardware synths, namely Korg M3 for my pianos, organs, rhodes etc, and a Korg Radias which I barely use. But I am more of a software man because I use more MIDI than I use Audio. It’s weird saying that because I am a keyboard player by trade.

You're set to play the Hardstraylia tour this month, which is not exactly the kind of tour I would have pegged you to play. Are you comfortable with switching things up in your sets, playing 'harder' so to speak? I think that is one thing many people get a bit confused when it comes to the HARD brand. I played an impromptu back-to-back set with Destructo in Miami a few weeks ago and we both played similar kind of house music. I usually play and produce a wide range of music too, from the slow and deep house (like my Meg Mac edit and my Owl Eyes remix) to the more bass-driven stuff like what I have put in this mix.

 photo Motezfreshblood_zps602d5097.png

Can you please tell us a little bit about the mix you’ve recorded? As mentioned earlier, the music that I prepared in this mix is more on the bass-driven tip of house music and that is the sort of stuff that people could expect from my sets on the HARD tour. A couple of exclusives are in there including my remix for Wookie & Eliza Doolittle that’s going to be released on Neon here in Australia and Strictly Rhythm worldwide.

Deadmau5 to Arcade Fire: 'Dafuqs yer problem?'

$

It's become apparent that Arcade Fire has little love for dance music. First, they invited a fake Daft Punk on stage with them on Sunday night of Coachella’s weekend one to play a slow motion version of one of last year's biggest hits, "Get Lucky," Arcade Fire's frontman Win Butler asking insultingly, "What is this, guys?" If you missed it, see for yourself below.

Then the band then decided to give a shout out to “all the bands playing instruments this weekend,” an obvious dig at the heavy DJ contingent invited to this year's Coachella.

arcade fire needs to settle down. some dudes devote their lives to instruments, others to electronic composition by cpu, dafuqs yer problem?

— deadmau5 (@deadmau5) April 23, 2014

While most artists likely brushed the insult aside, one thing you can always count on is an angry mau5, who took to his favourite social ranting forum to respond, saying, "arcade fire needs to settle down. some dudes devote their lives to instruments, others to electronic composition by cpu, dafuqs yer problem? (sic)" Which, we have to hand it to him, does carry quite a bit of truth to it.

i dont expect to see daft punk pull a steve vai on stage...i expect to listen to some decent music, n see cool robots. no problem.

— deadmau5 (@deadmau5) April 23, 2014

if i wanna watch real artists perform, id pick the opera before wasting a fucking minute of my life with arcade fire. #do youevenscorebro?

— deadmau5 (@deadmau5) April 23, 2014

but since some EDM is enjoyable to me, ill go watch them fake it, and enjoy it more than you hate the fact that they cant play guitar.

South Africa and beyond – Cuebur explains through music

$

Born in Middelburg, South Africa, dj and producer Nicholas Mboweni famously known as Cuebur, his inception in the music industry offered a different sound, a sound that was to grace the leading radio stations at the time that ultimately led to the success that he so righteously deserves, to date.

Cuebur is well-respected in circles across the musical-board with respect earned, and gained on an international platform spawn from the talents he demonstrates in house music and hip hop productions both in the studio and behind the hardware when he’s out in the field. Have a listen to his mix 'For Heads Only Minimix' here:

It was in 2011 that Cuebur was approached by Soulcandi with the idea of a new project called “Candi Roots” which is where the paths of himself, dj Mphoza and dj Hypnosis, crossed. It wasn’t long after the project that Cuebur decided on his own project entitled “Cuebur: Awakened Spirit” which he was to work on with guidance from his mentors George & Joseph Mothiba otherwise popularly known as “Revolution”.

Cuebur has gone from strength to strength and has also taken the initiative to found Cuebur Music which is a music publisher that disseminates his music and that of artists Rep & Belto Sladen, as well, around the globe. For this, it is Xolani “DJ Xola” Hlatshwayo who deserves thanks, as it was through him that Cuebur found his love for house music back in 2006 when they used to record mixtapes for the love of it.

Enzo Siragusa: 'one day of raving isn’t enough'

$

0

Enzo Siragusa is someone who has slowly built a huge reputation for himself in the London underground scene, and this reputation has seen Enzo play at countless top venues throughout the clubbing world. Enzo’s Fuse brand has grown from its humble beginnings into one of the most recognisable and respected brands in the underground house scene, spawning parties with huge artists across Europe and two highly successful record labels. Enzo Siragusa will be returning to Ibiza this summer for the biggest Fuse season yet, and is sure to consolidate his reputation as a champion of the underground on the White Isle. We caught up with Enzo to chat about all things Fuse, his relationship with Ibiza and making people cry with certain track selections…

So you’ve got some releases coming up, could you tell us about these? We’ve actually just had a release that came out the other day, a new EP from Rich NxT which has also got a remix from me and Alexkid. Also the next EP is me and Alexkid, it’s the “Kilimanjaro” project that we’ve being working on for a while.

Yeah, this a project you’ve been working on for some time. Yeah we’ve been exploring the boundaries of bass-lines, how much bass you can stick in a house track, really. We’ve managed to get quite a lot in there! We’ve done a remix of Rich NxT’s track called “Wasteline” and we’ve given it a real jungle-y sort of feel, an old school jungle feel, and then the next EP from me and Alexkid will be the “Kilimanjaro” EP which will feature three tracks going down this road with this project, some tunes more ‘garage-y’, some more ‘jungle-y’ in their sound. All of them have still got big bass-lines though with our stripped back, dubby house beats.

These will be released on your own labels, which have been very successful. You’ve got Fuse London and Infuse, what is the different focus between the two of them? Well Fuse London has always been more about the residents. It started as a platform for myself and the rest of the Fuse residents. In terms of Infuse, as over the years we’ve been putting music out, I’d get sent more and more music, some of it from people who have been inspired by our sound, so I felt that it could become a platform for some of these other unknown artists as well. Some friends of Fuse as well, not necessarily unknown, some established artists who have said, “This is the kind of thing I would play at Fuse, but I don’t know where else I would send it.” So I just thought, ‘Sod it, let’s just start another label and get this music out there.’ Because we’ve got so much music, I’ve ended up putting some of the resident’s stuff on Infuse anyway. There’s just so much music ready to come out!

You obviously pay quite a lot of attention to your vinyl releases as well. As a DJ, it’s an important format for you. Do you think it maybe adds a bit of credibility or quality control to the releases compared to digital? Well, I’ve actually stopped buying music digitally, really. Don’t get me wrong, I will buy some, but I don’t go searching all of Beatport and all of Juno Download because I found myself spending far too long looking for new music there, so I only buy vinyl now. So yeah maybe there is a certain element of quality control you get from getting something pressed to vinyl, be it from distribution or even if you’re paying for it yourself, you’re going to make sure it’s of a certain standard. I think there is an element of that. I pay a lot of attention to the vinyl because I’ve been DJing for 20 years, and that’s what I grew up with. I love playing records and I still do, I’m a vinyl DJ predominantly. Obviously I use some digital formats still, but I’m vinyl, man, that’s my thing! One track we release on each EP will be vinyl only so it gives something a bit special to that piece of vinyl.

I suppose the whole digging process with vinyl makes it special as well. Yeah, I love that part of the process – digging through old records, and now, even digging through old records looking for samples and stuff. When you’re going through samples, it’s quite nice taking it off a record!

Was there a conscious decision to have a distinct sound that people identify with Fuse? I’ll be honest man, we’ve ended up with a certain kind of sound, and I think when we used to be at 93 Feet East our sound used to be very stripped back and deep, and that was because we were a day time party at a very intimate venue. But over time that has changed. I’m playing big venues and I’m playing big stages, many different types of clubs, and as a DJ I’ve come through many sounds and genres. All of the guys are the same, so when you hear us play it’s not just that stripped back sound. I play everything, from house to techno and everything in between, be it deep and be it a little bit more banging, you know! I think the releases and the music, there’s been a lot of stripped back stuff, but over the last few years it’s been changing, which is a good thing! You could say we have a sound, it’s difficult to say though, I like everything and I play everything!

Any tips for artists coming through on the label? Yeah there’s a few. People like Archie Hamilton are putting out some really good stuff. The likes of Ferro, he’s a very talented producer from Holland. He’s putting out some great stuff. These are all guys who are new to the family. Rich NxT, he’s been on the label forever, but the guy’s so prolific, I think he makes a tune a week! He’s got so many amazing tunes we can’t keep up with it. He’s definitely one to watch, even though he’s not a new name or anything, but just for the amount of music he is making and how ground breaking and different it is to anything I’m hearing. There’s a lot of really good artists coming from our camp, which I’m really excited about.

Moving onto Ibiza, we know your Fuse parties at Sankeys are moving to Tuesdays and will be running for longer this year, tell us a bit more about this. Tuesday was actually always our original day. It’s what we always did since back in 2009 when we did our first summer on the island. So it’s good to be back on a Tuesday. It feels good, and basically I couldn’t wait to get stuck in so I said to the guys at Sankeys, “How quickly can we start?” And just got it rolling really. We’ve got loads of DJs and we all love to play so I just figured, ‘Why don’t we do the whole summer and just get it going?’ As long as I’ve got that one room, The Basement, to start with, and that sound system, I’m happy. I’m sure the rest of the residents will be over the moon to just get in there and play. We’re doing the whole thing then, all nineteen weeks, kicking off on the 27th May through to the end of September. I can’t wait, it gives you a chance to really get stuck into you record collection.

Plenty of friends of Fuse will be dropping in to play, much like last year, so there will be a lot of the same names. Friends of ours that play in London will be playing over there, but the party is going to be very much focused on the residents and there will be a lot more residents’ parties. We’re also going to throw in some Infuse showcases, trying to get some more unknown talent that have released on the label that haven’t ever played on the island before, and trying to feature some of those guys, because I think it’s good for them to have an opportunity to get on the island. It’s slightly more underground in comparison to some of the others parties that are going on on the island, but I’m really excited about presenting a different sound to what is being heard on the island typically in most of the clubs.

You’re also part of the Tribal Sessions opening line-up. Yeah there’s loads of names there, it’s over two days. Typical Sankeys and David Vincent – one day of raving isn’t enough, it’s got to be two! Heavy duty, two-day rave!

Thinking about Sankeys Ibiza in comparison to other clubs, do you think the atmosphere and where you experience the music is important? For me, The Basement at Sankeys is one of the best environments on the island, especially for listening to my kind of music and my kind of sound. It’s intense, the low ceiling, the imposing sound system, the lights; everything lends itself to a proper rave experience. You get that in some of the clubs, but Ibiza has always been something else to be honest. There’s not that intensity. It’s a different kind of partying, so I think Sankeys has brought a refreshing difference to the island and I think that’s important. It’s unique, which is good isn’t it?

What’s your relationship with Ibiza been like? Have you been DJing and visiting for a long time? My first summer over there, my first holiday, was in ’96 I think. I was about 18, and I’ve been back every summer since! I’ve done summer seasons as a worker in many different roles, and been a raver over there for many years and I still am. I’ve done everything on the island from PR, DJing, and being a resident DJ doing sunsets. I used to play Savannah’s over ten years ago and I used to play between 6 and 8 hours every night for the entire summer.

We can definitely call you an Ibiza veteran then. I’ve been there a while man, I’ve been back there on holidays, I’ve been to all the different clubs, different parties and different types of sounds, be it Manumission, the crazy days in the ‘90s, Bora Bora on the beach, Space on a Sunday, Circoloco in the early days, right at the beginning. I’ve kind of seen it all and it’s nice to be there in this capacity, a little bit older, having experienced all of that and watching new kids coming onto the island for the first time and being able to give a rave experience at Sankeys, something that they can take away and go, “’Wow, my first time in Ibiza was unbelievable!” I felt a lot of that last year at Sankeys, people really coming away and saying, “That was amazing.” Good, positive things really.

Has experiencing Ibiza in all these different capacities for all these years influenced the way you DJ then? Massively, massively. I’ve experienced the rave from the dance floor, and then obviously being on the island doing those sunset gigs, I remember playing all sorts, even things like Pink Floyd. And I remember dropping a Paul Weller track and someone coming over to me in floods of tears crying because it obviously did something for them! Experiencing that has been amazing, I’ve been very fortunate to have that and I’m very grateful that I managed to have that, doing stuff like the sunsets. I think it does have a big impact on your sound and how you play.

You’re good mates with tINI. Have you got any more plans to play with her this summer? I’d imagine so, yeah! I don’t know what’s been confirmed, but yeah for sure. She’s a very close friend of mine. She plays for me, I play for her and we play together! That’s definitely on the cards, for sure.

Looking forward to that then! Finally, what’s your all-time favourite Ibiza moment? To be honest I had loads in Fuse last year! Coming outside of work though, I think the Amnesia closing party in 2003 was probably one of the most amazing moments I’ve had. It was just ridiculous, there was naked people dancing around, these statues that they used to have that people used to climb up, transvestites giving out ‘coco loco’ drinks, I don’t know what was in them, but I was smashed! That party went on for days it was just one of the most amazing experiences of my life!

SoundPark - Fiakun: Music for your Soul

$

So here we find ourselves with the weather turning around. Spring is in the air and the music is absolutely fresh. We spent a little while contemplating who would take the reins for opening up our second season of SP. We wanted to really give people a reason to dig deeper for their music. This is your chance to dig a little further. We believe that there is nothing more inspiring then seeing a group take their talents and abilities to the next level collectively.

This is the case with the recording label, Fiakun. This concept is a direct result of composer, El_Txef_A and his team collectively putting their resources together along with their passion for creating a unique sound that will resonate with people everywhere. This group wears their music on their sleeve. When we first came across their first collaborative release we were stunned. “Fiakun Team- Around Your Neck” is beautiful EP that has stayed fresh in our hearts since its initial release in 2011.

SoundPark sat down with Fiakun heads, Aitor Etxebarria, Asier Martinez, Jabier Fernandez, Jon Barandika, Jonathan Loma, and Mikel Olasolo to discuss how this project came about, what their unique sound means to them and where this beautiful project is going towards in the future. They really are one of our benchmarks for truly creative and inspiring music. Welcome to SoundPark.

Tell us a little bit about Fiakun? We are just a bunch of childhood friends that absolutely love music. El_Txef_A was the first to take music more serious in terms of making DJing and producing more of a career. We first started throwing parties in Gernika, our home town, and then rented an office in 2011 to start running the label. It’s been great as it allowed us to work together!

Who makes up the creative core of Fiakun? Tell us a little about your individual backgrounds in the industry and what brought you all together for this? There are many people involved nowadays. Willy takes care of the main production for the albums and releases plus handles all the international bookings. Jonathan and Mikel focus mainly on the Fiakun event planning. Jon is our art director and Asier runs all of the digital marketing. We have been running well as a group of six but recently found room for our friend Iñigo to help us wherever we need it at the time.

How does your catalog represent your brand? We really just look for what we love - if we don’t love it we won’t release it, which says a lot about us. If you take a look at the catalog, it’s filled with variety… you can find releases ranging from pure house to pop influenced tracks to stuff that’s geared towards the dance floor. For those not as familiar, some of our artists are Kasper Bjorke, Permanent Vacation, and El_Txef_A – and then newer artists like Ene! and Andres Aguirre.

When someone says “Fiakun” what do you want people to think about? Specifically what’s the vision for the brand? We are looking to show that you can run a concept from your hometown if you do it right. We live in Gernika, the Basque country – Act Local, Think Global! I mean, of course we are a label, but we try hard not to get pinned into any one genre or anything like that.

What are the qualities of songs you guys are looking for when adding music to your catalog? How do you feel this sets you apart from the rest of the labels/imprints that are out there? Sometimes we look for something special… a special artist with unique feelings. Other times, we just listen to a track and get completely wowed and blown away. We also try to make every release special, which is why we really only try to do about two or three releases a year. By special I mean making a proper promo, unique artwork, and releasing everyone on vinyl of course!

What aspects of owning/managing a record label excites you the most and drives you to put out the caliber of material you guys do? We started this from nothing and have learned so much over the past three or so years, and want to ensure we keep learning. Every day is very special for us, as it’s the little things that keep us going. A tag on twitter or an email from someone just showing love… things like that. It’s great when people show us some love; it means we are doing something right!

Tell us a little bit about Fiakun Team? How does the team collectively put music together? So far we’ve released one EP as the Fiakun Team, which was our first release. We actually had some great remixes by Penner & Muder and Roberto Rodriguez. We each have a separate role, but we usually just all get together at the studio and try to capture our moods and what we are into at the moment. We are excitedly planning another EP together, looking to release it about early 2015. After this summer, we have plans to hide ourselves in the studio for a few weeks and see what kind of magic comes out of it.

What was one of the most memorable moments you all had performing together? Our first release was something very special, since it was our first EP together and the first release on the label. We’ve also had some really good memories at a party during Sonar. We got to play with Fritz Kalkbrenner, Chopstick & Johnjon, and Sasse.

What can we expect from Fiakun in 2014? Any releases, parties, or events that you are excited about? We are releasing El_Txef_A’s second LP titled “We Walked Home Together” on a double 12” and CD… The single was actually released on Monday (21st of April) on a 10” limited press vinyl with the entire album releasing May 26th. Later this year, we are doing a special party at Sonar for the three year anniversary of the label and we have a really interesting lineup we’re excited to announce next week… you’ll just have to wait and see!

El_Txef_A, tell us a bit about your new album? What was the inspiration behind it? What does this album mean to you? I always work on an album with a main concept in mind, something to focus me. This time around I just worked with the feeling of peace you get when walking home with someone you really love. This album means a lot to me as it’s the second LP I’ve released and I feel I’m getting close to the depths of me after some personal changes in my life… so it really was like therapy.

A recent feature on NPR investigates the properties of sound using a cool way to visualize sound waves. A clever photography technique called Schlieren Flow Visualization actually allows you to “see” sound waves as they travel through the air. What do sound waves, traveling at a speed of 761 miles per hour (aka the speed of sound) look like?

The video shows several examples of the sound produced by clapping hands, dropped objects, a firecracker, and an AK-47, among other things, and further explains the method used to capture the sound waves in action. Enjoy!

Matt Tolfrey & Ryan Crosson Chat About 'Don't Be Leftout'

$

Leftroom label boss Matt Tolfrey has teamed up with Visionquest buddy Ryan Crosson for their 'Don't Be Leftout' mix compilation, out now on Leftroom Records.  The mix is packed with label exclusives from Matt and Ryan themselves as well as the likes of Maher Daniel, Jay Haze, Huxley, Ricardo Villalobos, and Luke Solomon. In light of the compilation's release, Matt and Ryan sat down together for a little chat about track selection, the Leftroom catalog, playing and collaborating with other DJs, being left out, bacon, unlucky numbers, and much more.  Enter to win a copy of the compilation below!

Matt: Is this the first mix CD you have completed using your own name rather than a team effort?
Ryan: Actually this was a team effort with you Matt!

Ryan: Why was it important for you to only include material exclusive to Leftroom for this mix? Wouldn't you be "leaving out" a large portion of tracks that could have offered a more fluid aesthetic between you and your partner?
Matt: I knew you'd ask this question... I just felt it was a good opportunity to support all the Leftroom artists that have been releasing music with us for the last few years, and also introduce some new producers that we're keeping our eye on. Deep down, I knew you'd be up for the challenge Ryan!!! Also, and more importantly it adds an extra angle to the project as the music is so fresh.

Matt: Was it a lot more challenging in that all the tracks were signed exclusively to the mix and you couldn't just chose from any music out there?
Ryan: It did provide a degree of difficulty at the beginning when we were sifting through a lot of material. There were a lot of tracks at the time that I wanted to license but looking back, it's better that we didn't because of the timeline of when we started until the mix actually came out. While truly great tracks don't have a shelf life, some can become a bit overplayed during the year. By keeping the music exclusive we have the opportunity to highlight new tracks from established artists as well as break some new unknown acts that could influence how things go in 2014.

Ryan: A common attitude with many is that there are no rules when it comes to making music. However, be it with a mix CD or in the studio, do you feel that sometimes putting a set of rules or limitations on yourself could also open up a world of possibilities and challenges of doing more with less?
Matt: Too much of anything can get confusing, and therefore lead to a lack of concentration. In the studio a lot of producers get caught up in listening to hours and hours of samples, when they could actually invest in a bit of hardware and make it themselves. The thought of compiling a mix CD where there are no boundaries or rules is quite daunting, but something I would be extremely excited about also. I can't imagine you can do too many of these in your life...

Matt:
How many times did the mix have to be re-started or change direction?
Ryan: Countless. No, not that many. Maybe four times if I remember correctly.

Ryan: Having had the final copy of the mix for months now, is there anything you would do differently?
Matt: Musically, no. Business wise, always, but that's boring and an ongoing battle in the music industry!!!

Matt: Do you enjoy playing back2back with fellow DJs?
Ryan: Most of the time, yes, because I'm playing with people that I've known for years and we know how to compliment one another, but even that can have its downside if there is a lack of communication and interaction. If one guy is just trying to top the other with big drops and build ups the set sucks and the party suffers. If I'm playing with someone and that shit starts happening and it's totally out of context I'd rather just not play. Playing back to back is about creating a positive unique experience that doesn't happen so often and it's about playing off of one another. If you want to drown out your partner, why did you agree to play back to back?

Ryan: You're known for collaborating with friends both in the studio and through many different types of party events. Do you feel that too many solo productions and solo gigs can stagnate an artist and create sort of a narrow field of vision or bland palate when it comes to their music?
Matt: In my opinion, one of the most interesting things about life is that that everyone is different. Personally, I find working with others keeps me inspired and more focused. If I work on my own for too long I start thinking about emails, promoting, the bank, bills, dinner, my wife, etc... Can you imagine working in an office completely on your own? I reckon it would be very weird...

Matt: Have you ever been left out?
Ryan: Many times. It helps you generate a tough skin.

Ryan: Would you consider bacon a condiment?
Matt: It's quite simple... "When there is bacon in your mouth, nothing else matters."

Matt: What should you never leave out?
Ryan: Your friends.

Ryan: What is your worst habit?
Matt: Over sleeping.

Matt:
Is the number 13 unlucky for you?
Ryan: Not at all. It's just a number.

Watch: David Lynch & Moby In Conversation at IMS Engage

In one of the more thought provoking pairings at this year’s IMS Engage, legendary film director David Lynch (“Mulholland Drive,” “Inland Empire” and “Blue Velvet”), and influential electronic artist Moby chatted quinoa and sperm, keeping the IMS Engage delegation on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

The two are no strangers to one another and share quite the history together (remixing each other, sampling music from “Twin Peaks”, and sharing similar interests in art). Moby came armed with a series of questions that veered away from music and instead towards God, death, maggots, painting and Transcendental Meditation (Surprising? Not really).

Some highlights from the conversation include Moby opening up about his upbringing and living in an abandoned factory, which spawned inspiration for his career. Lynch asked Moby his theory on life after death, to which Lynch’s response to Moby’s answer was, “That’s the worst theory I’ve ever heard.” Check out the full chat below!

MAKJ: Not The New Kid For Long

$

He’s raced just below Formula 1 on the world circuit, worked under the late, great DJ AM, and alongside Hardwell, achieving a number one hit with “Countdown.” More recently, he collaborated with Lil’ John, played Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland, earned a residency at XS in Vegas, and will play Cream at Amnesia’s closing party this year for the party’s 20th anniversary alongside Laidback Luke and Benny Benassi – and he’s only 23 years old.

Though Mack, or MAKJ, is in many ways, still a newcomer on the international EDM scene. But with a CV like his, it’s clear he won’t be the new kid for long. So we caught up with MAKJ to find out about his time at ICON Collective, his relationship with DJ AM, and where he hopes to be in 5 years time (hint – it’s not less successful).

Most young and aspiring DJ's could only have dreamt of having your childhood. With your Formula 1 background, you were able to tour the world to countries like China and Bahrain, eventually discovered DJing. How did you first start clubbing, and who were your early inspirations musically? While I was living in Macau for racing, I went to a club and saw DJ Q*Bert for the first time and I was entranced. I went up to him after his set and asked a ton of questions about how it all worked, and then when I got back to the States I bought my first set of Technic 1200 turntables and the rest was history!

Do you think your racing background helped prepare you in any way for your current career? It definitely made me very competitive and instilled in me a very disciplined work ethic, so yes I think it helped a lot!

In order to progress through the DJing ranks, you realised that learning production was vital. Having enrolled at ICON Collective, what kind of career changing advise did they provide you with in order for you to further your skills and rise in the ranks? And would you recommend a school like that to aspiring young producers? Yes, I’d definitely recommend production school to all aspiring producers. I started out just DJing, but quickly realized that I need to produce as well if I was going to really succeed, and going to school helped me to achieve that goal much more quickly than if I’d sat at home teaching it all to myself.

You also had the rare privilege of working under the wing of the late DJ AM, saying he was like a father figure. In fact, you mentioned he help connect you with the right person at Club XS in Vegas for your residency. How did you first connect with such a world-renowned figure? And do you plan on paying it forward to the next generation later in your career if given the chance? My good friend DJ Politik introduced me to Adam, and yes he was a great mentor for me. I’m definitely doing my best to pay it forward by collaborating with young aspiring producers like M35 who I did my track “Revolution” with, and also by posting studio tutorial videos online to teach others the skills that have been bestowed on me.

If given the once in a lifetime opportunity to collaborate with three other artists, who would you choose to work with and why? I’d really love to collaborate with some Classic Rock, New Wave Hip-Hop artists like Tom Petty, The English Beat, and DMX.

Things really took off for you when you worked alongside Hardwell on the successful hit single, "Countdown," which reached Number One on Beatport just three days after it had been released. What was the experience like to work with such a world famous DJ and producer, and how did it feel to achieve a number-one single? Achieving a number-one was the best feeling in the world! Working with Hardwell was great, we have been friends ever since he started playing my edits and mash-ups in his sets, so it was great to finally be able to work on an original song with him.

Switching gears now to your latest release. You collaborated with Lil' John to produce "Let's Get F*cked Up." Can you tell us a little bit more about your newest release and what it was like to work with Lil' John? I met Lil Jon at Ultra 2013, we were both standing on stage while Chuckie was playing and he dropped my then-unreleased track “Springen.” Jon tried to Shazam it, and I leaned over and told him that he wouldn’t find it because it was my new song that wasn’t out yet. He said he really liked it, and then our collaboration blossomed from there. We stayed in touch, I sent him the instrumental for “LGFU,” and he worked his magic on it! It was definitely a great experience making such a fun club record with him that harkens back to my roots as a hip-hop/scratch DJ, when I would use Jon’s vocal samples in my sets constantly.

And I understand you have a new collaboration with Bassjackers due out soon? Can you tell us more about that, and how it all came about? Yes, our track “DERP” comes out April 28th on Hysteria Records. We’re very excited! We toured together along with Bingo Players last year on the Rattle & Roll Tour, because we’re great friends, so a collaboration came about very naturally after that.

With the summer of 2014 fast approaching, you are set to be performing at the Cream at Amnesia closing party on September 25th for their 20th anniversary no less. That has to feel good! It feels amazing! I’ve never been to Ibiza before so I’m definitely looking forward to my shows there this summer, and to playing a closing party at such a legendary venue!

What are you looking forward to most about the show? I hear the crowds are crazy and the parties go all night. I can’t wait to experience the energy of the White Isle!

You also not long ago gained residency at XS in Las Vegas as well as performing live at the Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland. Which one has been your favourite to perform at so far, and how would you compare the three? They’re all different and I’ve enjoyed them all for different reasons. My favorite set thus far in my career would definitely have to be Ultra 2014 in Miami. The crowd was insane and huge!

Do you have any thoughts on the City of Miami’s recent efforts to shut down UMF? I hope they don’t! But at the same time I hope that the festival can get the security and safety issues under control, and that kids who rush fences can calm down and stop doing that. They need to realize that they’re putting people’s lives in danger, and that’s no way to party.

Having accomplished so much behind the decks in such little time, it's quite easy to forget you are only 23 years of age. After such massive success so early on, where do you see yourself in five years time and what do you hope to have achieved by then? I hope to have made a full album by then, and I’d love to branch out into different styles of production, maybe do some music for films or TV, and perhaps produce for artists in genres other than EDM.

MAKJ is next at Cream Liverpool on 4th May and Digital Newcastle on the 5th May. His collaboration with Bassjacker's, 'DERP,' is out on the 28th April on Hysteria records, and you can preview it here: https://soundcloud.com/makj/bassjackers-makj-derp-original

Following a string of stellar 2014 releases, Carl Cox and Jon Rundell's Intec is back with an EP release from one of Canada’s hottest techno duos, The Junkies, aptly dubbed ‘Revolution.' We've got the exclusive premiere of 'Check This Out' from the EP, an absolute stomper that's sure to light up dance floors across Ibiza and the world this summer. Listen here.

With past releases on imprints like Nicole Moudaber’s MOOD, Dubfire’s SCI-TEC and Carlo Lio’s Rawthentic, The Junkies have gone from strength to strength, now following up last year’s ‘A Blind Eye’ EP, their acclaimed Intec debut, which garnered support from some of the world’s DJ elite.

Vince and Val recently played several high profile parties across Miami, including the Sci Tec Showcase at Treehouse, and Boris presents Get WET 10 Year Anniversary Pool Party at the Surfcomber, proving their chops to dish it out to the crowd as well as they can inside the studio, a seemingly rare quality these days. Hopefully we'll be seeing plenty more of these two across the globe in the years to come.

The Junkies 'Revolution’ EP will be available on Beatport exclusively from April 28th, and the rest of the world two weeks later.

With a few new additions, and some of last season's favourites returning, Pacha Ibiza has announced its residencies for 2014.

One of the most exciting announcements for 2014 comes with the news that the famed Ibiza Rocks House will be joining forces with Pacha every Monday night this season, coming together through the Ibiza Rocks team and Manumission, which celebrates 20 years this season. Kicking off Monday 26th May and running each week until 6th October, legends like Derrick Carter, Kevin Saunderson and Kenny Dope, fresh talent such as Shadow Child and Claptone, as well as Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada and 2manydjs are all set to play.

On Tuesdays, it's the return of one of the island's most beloved nights, Flower Power, which has run for more than 40 years with Pacha co-founder DJ Piti at thehelm the entire time. Though it's a little different than your average Ibiza night, it's one of the most fun, and most unique. Starting June 3rd, prepare to get dressed in your best hippie garb, and revel in the timeless sounds of the '60s and '70s.

Another fresh night for Pacha this year, Steve Aoki's new Aoki's Playhouse kicks off May 28th and runs every Wednesday this seasonuntil September 24th. The club is set to be transformed each week into something straight from the twisted mind of Aoki, and feature guests like Laidback Luke, Martin Garrix, Lil Jon, Nervo and more. Prepare to get caked.

The energy doesn't stop there, as Thursdays will continue to be lit up by the one and only David Guetta, who returns with F*** Me I'm Famous on May 29th, with new production, and new and renowned talents guest appearing every week like Nicky Romero, Afrojack, Showtek, A-Track, Chuckie and more. And of course, the night will be dripping with all the sex appeal, glam and glitz Guetta's night is known for. The opening party kicks off May 29th with David Guetta, Showtek and Daddy’s Groove.

Fridays see the return of one of the island's best underground nights with Insane, featuring the likes of John Digweed, DJ Sneak, MK, Tensnake, and more. This year, however, they'll be a special twist, with Guy Gerber's Wisdom Of The Glove...Goes Inasne for four dates this season. Guy will be sharing the booth with artists like Magda, Tiga, Martin Buttrich and Green Velvet. Pre-season festivities kick off March 9th with Dennis Ferrer, Reboot and Angel Linde, and again on May 16th with John Digweed and MK, and the opening party goes down May 23rd with John Digweed, Dennis Ferrer, Tensnake and MK.

The real cherry flavour is on Saturdays with the return of Pure Pacha, a very special night with a touch of Paris where the main protagonists of the summer will be Bob Sinclar and Martin Solveig, who'll be accompanied by some of the best house artists of the moment including John Martin, Masters At Work, Shapeshifters and more. The Pure Pacha Opening Party kicks off May 24th with Bob Sinclar, John Martin (live PA), MYNC, Shapeshifters and Dazzla.

After a wildly impressive 2013, King Solomun returns for Sundays this season at Pacha with Solomun +1, bringing friends and guests like Claude VonStroke, Anja Schneider, H.O.S.H., Dixon, Ame and Pete Tong. After a special pre-party this weekend, April 26th, Solomun +1 begins on May 25th with Solomun and DJ Koze, running every Sunday until October 5th.
