What Happened To Ibiza's Beloved Fish Shack?

Rumours are circulating that one of Ibiza's favourite chiringuitos, The Fish Shack, has closed down.

Chatter has sparked over a photo that surfaced on Facebook of a lone, empty space upon the rock face where the infamous Talamanca restaurant resides. Some Ibiza locals are saying the Spanish government has shut it down, whilst other reports indicate that the restaurant is being completely redone.

 photo fishshack_zps28bfc2b9.jpg

The Fish Shack has been a White Isle institution for 34 years - a word of mouth, rustic establishment that has gained a reputation for serving some of the best seafood in Europe. There is no need for a menu as it simply consists of what has been pulled out of the sea that morning, which is often tuna, sardines, sea bream and sea bass served alongside buttery potatoes and a tomato and onion salad. Then of course there's the view.

We'll have more details as they come to hand on the Fish Shack's future.

Art Department Slam Steve Aoki & Laidback Luke: "They Can Lick Their Own Vaginas"

$

Remember that parody video a few weeks back of Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke and Sander van Doorn that went viral? Sure you do, it's the one where some legend with way too much time on his or her hands rips on the three EDM superstars for doing very little whilst on stage. Here it is again in case you missed it:

The video has just caught the attention of Art Department and it's clearly brought some home truths to the table for the Canadian duo over the state of commercial dance music. In short, they pissed! Check out the rather hilarious post on their facebook from Jonny White:

"ok i know we're a bit late on this one and it's already made the rounds but something has to be said.. by us. All three of these duchebags need to stop calling what they do "dj'ing" because its an insult to the rest of us who treat this profession with respect and spend our lives hunting for great music and perfecting our craft. We only recognize which one Steve Aoki is out of this lot but him and the other two jerkoffs who look like the knobs they're pretending to work can all lick their own vaginas. You're fucking embarrassing yourselves for a paycheque that that coudn't possibly cover the cost of your dignity. How does that feel you fucking posers??" [sic]

What do you think of Art Department's deliciously colourful rant? Are most EDM DJs taking the piss when it comes to their craft?

A New Lockout-Free Party Arrives In Sydney

A new club night is kicking off in Sydney...with a difference. Speakeasy will take place at The Imperial Hotel each month showcasing the best in house and techno, and for those who already live in the inner-west well know, the venue's home of Erskineville is free from the NSW Government's 1:30am cessation of alcohol and 3am lockout laws.

A collaboration between two local party crews Charades and EK Collective, Speakeasy's debut party goes down in May. So what can punters expect? Here's what the Speakeasy fellas had to say about their new baby:

"In the dark over the recent massive restrictions to late night fun in Sydney, we felt the need for a place to call home after 3am just like the majority of party people we know. We wanted more time to see the people we love and to keep the ball rolling that little bit longer, like we all enjoy doing from time to time. Stepping away from the run-of-the-mill 'deep house' party, we hold a priority to vary our lineups, bringing a unique feel to the late hours - for all to enjoy - in our city. For these reasons, Sydney crews EK and Charades are proud bring you a collaboration project: Speakeasy."

Stay tuned to Pulse for the official announcement on the first party to drop later this week. For more info head to the facebook page.

For the latest stop in the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s tour of Australia, Wills and Kate learn how to DJ, and it's as cringe-worthy as it sounds. Watch here.

While visiting the Northern Sound System, a learning centre in Adelaide that teaches music to disadvantaged young people, Kate and Wills got on the wheels of steel for a short lesson.

According to teacher Shane Petersen, Kate “was fantastic.” Once the performance was over, Prince William spray painted a wall outside the centre used by aerosol artists. Seriously.

Getting Social with Niskerone

Hailing from the dusty streets of Mitchell’s Plain in the heart of the notorious Cape Flats, Niskerone’s energetic and innovative style of mixing has entertained crowds at festivals and on dancefloors around the world. Niskerone needs no introduction in the world of Drum & Bass.

The man behind ‘It Came From The Jungle’, Niskerone started this weekly residency at Fiction DJ Bar in May 2006 after identifying a need in Cape Town for a Drum & Bass night that catered to the lighter side of the genre. Aside from pleasing hundreds of revelers each week, it also secured him slots alongside industry leaders such as Pendulum, Busta Rhymes, The Bloody Beetroots, DJ Fresh (UK), Dieselboy, Sigma, Cutline, and many more. We caught up with the DnB boss. Read further.

Tell us Niskerone’s story in a sentence…I’m just a guy who’s passionate about good music and making people dance…

Having been around on the South African electronic scene for a considerable amount of time, demolishing floors, also having been part of several projects, what keeps electronic music exciting to you? The constant stream of new & exciting pieces of music that comes out. I’m always discovering new and interesting takes on established genres, guys & girls that aren’t afraid to make exactly what they want. It inspires me.

It’s been a long time since, but I’ve been dying to ask you, what was like in Monegros? It’s one of my favourite festivals to play and I’ve played it for 5 straight years now. It’s 20 hours of dusty, crazy fun, and filled with happy Spanish people. The line ups are always solid and each year I get to discover a new artist that I’ve never come across before, as well as see/meet legends.

Some are of the opinion that streaming music is the way of the future…how do you feel about that? You cannot fight the future. Just ask VHS… I’m happy about it, nowadays you could be performing in Tokyo and fans in Cape Town or Rio can stream your set live, that’s insane. It’s opened up so many possiblities of what artists can do with their talents.

I know there are a lot of exciting things happening in your corner at the moment…able to share anything with us that your fans don’t, but would kill to know? We’re busy building my AV show for the festival season, I’ve got a great team of talented individuals with me. It will be a game changer.

Do you have any pre-show rituals? Is there anything that comes with you on stage…always? Water, always. I always stretch before I go on stage. There’s not much worse than an ailing neck the next day.

What was your favourite most inspiring ‘record’ (tune/album/cd) growing up? I had quite a few, but one of them was ‘01/’02’s Bad Company UK - Shot Down On Safari album, which coincidentally DJ Fresh UK was a part of.

Niskerone with Bridges For Music

It’s incredibly difficult to tell with so many factors playing an integral role in what the result will be, but do you think that electronic dance music…or the industry in SA more specifically, is on the right track? In terms of SA artists getting recognition & tours abroad, hell yes! I love how South African music has been spreading around the world. With regards to the world’s influence on SA music/events,  it’s mostly good, but it has pros & cons to it too…

Do you ever get tired of the club scene…it becomes quite a thing when you’re doing it all the time…how do manage this? I try and stay away from clubs and loud music when I’m not performing. That usually helps.

Dancer or not? It depends on how many drinks are in me…

A mogul in the South African music industry says it how it is. If you haven’t already, go and expose yourself to Niskerone’s highly energetic set this weekend the 26th of April at The Social alongside top South African talents such as Sibot, Das Kapitaland more, in Stellenbosch

Esteban Adame Interview 23 April 2014

$

I understand you're part of two live acts, Galaxy to Galaxy and There After Dark. What comes first for you, live music, DJing or production, or all they all arms from the same body?

They are all apart of the same body. I have a working jazz trio here in LA and we play all the time. Thee Afterdark plays when we have a chance to get together as we are all really busy. I try to get into the studio pretty regularly, but before anything I was a DJ first. I guess you can say my first instrument was the turntable.

You also have several aliases, including ICAN and El Coyote, which are your collaborative efforts, as well as Esteban Adame. How far apart would you say these sounds are, and why did you decide to go ahead with an album under your solo guise?

ICAN is a partnership and a label with Santiago Salazar. El Coyote is also a collaboration with my boy DJ Dex aka Nomadico from UR. Both ICAN and El Coyote are heavily rooted in the UR tradition of “electrifying your roots.” Recently I have worked under the Frequencia alias, which is different from anything else I have done. As Frequencia I try to get as edgy and experimental as possible. With ICAN, we always keep the dancer in mind. Why I decided to go under my own name? I felt it was time. From my first releases I was either collaborating with someone or acting as a sideman, and I felt it was time for me to do a project under my own name.

Can you tell us more about your forthcoming album, "Day Labor"?

It is a collection of tracks that were made when my studio was in a friends warehouse. I was driving an hour everyday to get to the studio, taking lunch breaks and coffee breaks. I was on a schedule; it felt like I was going to work. The commute was a bit of a grind, but once I got to the studio everything really flowed, I really enjoyed the process. The warehouse was next to a hardware store where day labourers would gather to try to get construction jobs. I became friends with some of them and was inspired by their stories. They risked so much leaving their home country that it made me realize that I have nothing to complain about when I whine about my “first world” problems.

That’s quite a provocative title. Why "Day Labor"?

Given the way I went about putting the album together was really blue collar, I wanted to name the album something along those lines. And just calling it blue collar was a little lame. [Laughs] From being in the warehouse to meeting the labourers it just made sense. “Day Labor” seemed to work. Since I was a kid I had always seen day labourers outside hardware stores and even some of my family worked as a day labourers when they came over from Mexico. So “Day Labor” has always been around me. It is also dedicated to all people who leave home in search for a better life for them and their families.

Finally, now that the album is all but wrapped up, what are your plans heading into the first part of 2014?

We are in the process of booking some shows and I am working on a live show of the album. We have one more single coming out on EPM that drops after the album, which has a killer Anthony Parasole and Phil Moffa Remix. I also have a Thee Afterdark album that we are all excited about, as well as an EP on Jordan Peak’s Rogue Society, with two very special remixes by two very special producers. Looking to have one more ICAN release this year, as well as planning to launch a new label.

Esteban Adame’s ‘Home Sick’ is out now and features a remix by MGUN, followed by his “Day Labor” album, released 5th May on EPM Music www.epm-music.com

After a highly successful season last year, it's of little surprise that the Diynamic boss is back for round two of his popular and unique night, Solomun +1 atPacha Ibiza.

The night's popularity stemmed partly from Solomun's massive ability to draw a crowd, the upbeat and carefree attitude of the party, and his unique twist on an Ibiza residency, selecting just one special guest to join him for the evening. This year that theme continues, and once again Solomun has hand picked a who's who of house jocks to take over the booth each Sunday, which is moved to the middle of the Pacha dance floor for the occasion, adding to the party's intimate vibe.

Things kick off this year with the opening party on May 25th featuring Pampa boss DJ Koze. From there, the regular events start on June 6th with DirtyBird boss Claude VonStroke, followed by Mobilee boss Anja Schneider, Diynamic’s H.O.S.H. and Innervisions star Dixon, as well as one special guest still TBA.

July sees jocks like Pete Tong, Miss Kittin and Adriatique, whilst in August, Miss Kittin, andhim, Radio 1’s Heidi and more will all play. During September, dance music veteran Pete Tong returns, as do Adriatique and Miss Kittin, with Innervisions duo Âme also stopping by.

Solomun +1 will run every Sunday this summer from May 25th-October 5th at Pacha Ibiza.

Anthony Bourdain: EDM is “Douchedom”

$

0

On a recent episode of ‘Parts Unknown,’ Anthony Bourdain traveled to Las Vegas to take it all in... the food, entertainment, and overall atmosphere. He brought along cookbook writer Michael Ruhlman and met up with a few old friends including a magician, and local chefs.

The episode gets especially interesting when he delves into the prominent EDM culture that is now dominating Sin City, and he has a few choice words that are nothing but hilarious. Criticizing how Las Vegas establishments now make more money from nightlife and alcohol sales than from gambling as they historically had, he likens EDM to cocaine saying “It’s a DJ’s world, and where once they used to say cocaine was God’s way of telling you you had too much money, now maybe EDM is.” Maybe he’s “too old" to understand... or maybe he's just "non-douchey?”

He then taps into his poetic side and recites a poem he wrote: “Come ye lords and princelings of douchedom, hear my clarian call. Annoint-eth yourself with gel and heavenly body spray. Make-eth thy sign of the devil horns with thine hands. Let there be high-fiving and hugging of bros, for this is the kingdom and the power.”
