Skrillex's Headline Sonar Slot Causes widespread Controversy

$
0
0

King of the ear-bleeding bass, Skrillex, has caused more internet ripples of late without actually lifting a finger or triggering a mid-range bassline. Sonar Festival - the global electronic and new media festival that concentrates on 'advanced culture' - have announced that the EDM pioneer shall be headlining the Friday night of the festival - much to the dismay of Sonar's loyal fanbase.

A festival that's usually concerned with avant-garde pop, crossover experimentalists and rigid techno, Sonar's official Facebook Page has been inundated by complaints about the festival's daring choice. "Call your self a cutting edge festival? The only thing cutting edge with Skrillex is that everyone reaches for their razor blades!" read one of the less than happy comments. Other's remark "Skrillex? Seriously? No one goes to Sonar to see Skrillex. Please sort this line-up out"; whilst some people offer more diplomatic responses: "Don't you people have nothing better to do than hate on Skrillex? Seriously f**k off. Like it or not he's an amazing producer deal with it."

According to a SPIN interview with Sonar directors Enric Palau and Ricard Robles last year, they discussed the overlap of commercial artists bringing cutting edge music and concepts to the festival: "It's about developing your profile not in opposition or to be alternative," Robles explained, "but because the expectation attached to the brand is that every year there's an offering of 100, 120 acts that are the most representative of the musical panorama. And thus we can move between extremes — from the world of rock at one end to the world of commercial pop at the other, without subverting the Sónar brand... We can't turn our backs or take a snobby attitude. Those acts are a symptom of where we are, what's happening in music now."

Skirllex joins other high profile names such as Pet Shop Boys, Paul Kalkbrenner, Two Door Cinema Club, and Nicolas Jaar, as well as more niche-oriented acts like trap upstart Baauer, noise technician Vatican Shadow and NYC rapper Mykki Blanco. Skirllex has of course been experimenting ith genres outside of his usual remit, releasing a track that tips his hat to Burial and more melodic, underground producers. After seeing him play a meditational set at Red Bull Music Academy's Carnival party in London last year. Revelers can pretty much expect anything to arise from this controversial booking. Maybe he'll even soften the hearts of those die-hard Sonar fans.

Kerri Chandler DOESN'T Flip Out - Spreads Love For Deep House

$

0

Editor's note: the original text of this article was written directly in response to the video shot at Rex Club on Sunday night. Thanks to the magic of social media, we have been informed that Kerri was neither angry nor flipping out, merely turning down the music to have a "chat," with his fans. We appreciate this feedback. We love Kerri Chandler and value our readers, and strive always for accurate journalism. Thank you!

Kerri Chandler has a steady passion for the underground that few could match. His labels, Madhouse Records and MadTech Records, have been pushing out quality music, and Kerri has decades as a DJ and producer under his belt, a true pioneer in deep house and soulful grooves.

In the middle of his set at Rex Club in Paris on Sunday night, Kerri cut off the music and began speaking to the crowd, "if you want that David Guetta shit, get out of here right now."

"Email me, and I'll hook you up."

Apparently this was a conversation with punters at the club, which regularly books quality house and techno acts (upcoming artists include Doc Martin, D'Julz, Agoria, Nina Kraviz, Tale of US etc.). It's unclear what set him off, but it's a sentiment that any underground DJ can surely relate to.

Beautiful Peru Hosts Unique Eco Party: "Inti Festival" With Adultnapper

Inti festival is one of the most unique dance events on the planet. Taking place on February 16th, near Lima, Peru, it marries culture, ecological awareness, and the best of underground music in one of the most diverse climates in the world. Running since 2010 on the beautiful "Asia Beach" just outside Lima, Inti festival educates attendees on Peruvian history and global issues through eco art projects, while top billing underground dance artists provide a forward thinking soundtrack. One of the artists on the bill for this year's festival is the infamous Adultnapper aka Francis Harris, man of many monikers and co-owner of quickly rising NY based label, Scissor and Thread (along with Anthony Collins). He sits down with us prior to the festival to talk about why he loves Peru, the importance of relationships in dance music, and the potential for dance music to effect social change.

In a recent interview with Meoko, you said that literature, in its various forms, inspires you to make music. How does the written word transform itself into musical notes, in your mind? Have you ever thought about putting pen to paper yourself?  I don't think it translates directly into musical notes, but clearly every form of art has a mood to it. Thus, often this mood inspires a musical direction. As I also said in the previous interview, I find it troubling to intellectualize music, as then it sets up imaginary boundaries that can be limiting. I find that my love of music inspires my writing and my love of literature inspires my music, but in ways that cannot be quantified, nor spoken of. In terms of my own writing, I write all the time. I've been published a few times in my past, but right now, I only do for myself.

You're being billed as Adultnapper at Inti Fest, but recently you've mentioned that the dark, clubby sounds associated with this moniker have lost some appeal to you. You've also been producing under "lightbluemover," and your own name, Francis Harris. What can kind of sound can fans expect from you at the festival?  Adultnapper is, as you say, a bit of a darker sound, so I suppose if that’s how I am being billed, this is how I will approach the set more or less.

Inti Fest has a unique place in the spectrum of electronic dance music events. It promises to educate attendees on the culture and history of Peru, and also has a strong focus on conservation. What are your thoughts on this kind of environmentally and culturally friendly festival?  Well as most of my Peruvian friends know already, I am in love with Peru and the focus of this festival is ultimately what I would love my music to be invested in. I do not think that art and social responsibility are mutually exclusive. I think they can and must interact, so this festival is very important to me as an artist.

INTI FEST - ¿Por qué bailamos? from 4Beats Peru on Vimeo.

Having traveled all over the world, what's special about Peru, and specifically playing in Peru?  There is something very magical about Peru and its people. I always say when I land in Lima, even at the airport, it feels like I am coming home, which is rare. Even though I do not live in Peru, nor come from Peru, it feels familiar and warm.

Scissor and Thread, your imprint with Anthony Collins, has been in steady ascent over the past couple of years. Tell us about the impetus behind this label, and your vision for it.  Our vision was to step out of the box and just follow our hearts and our love of all kinds of music. We feel that if our passion remains clear and true, the audience is sure to follow and thus far we have found this remarkably successful.

As label boss, how do you handle A&R? Are you receiving enough demos to sift through and find material, or are you proactively reaching out to many new artists?  We are not a label that necessary looks for demos. It’s about relationships. All of our artists have been found through mutual friends in both New York and Paris. We are lucky to be involved in a community of highly talented artists that in one way or another come into our group of friends. So, I suppose much of it is luck in the beginning. The rest comes through nurturing our relationships and developing our artists for a long term vision. We are not interested in "flash in the pan" EPs and hype. We are interesting in exploring long term relationships with artists and their vision.

As you further in your career how do you see yourself, and your sound, evolving? Do you have a plan, or are you following your muse wherever she leads you?  As a good friend always says to me, "Follow the arrow." I try not to think about how my sound evolves. I just keep an open mind and heart, I work hard and I just trust that development is a part of a true and honest dedication to the music. The rest is just small talk.

Speaking of muses, what, or who, inspires you today?  The strength and dedication of the people in my life.

For the techies amongst us, what instruments, software or hardware, do you absolutely love these days?  Right now I am obsessed with creating sound out of the box with as many unusual sources as possible. I am doing a lot of sampling from found sound recordings, so microphones are my current fetish. That, and the most simple and remarkable little drum machine I have ever owned, the MFB-522 drumcomputer. My next album will have beats only from this and my microphone recordings. It’s an incredibly enriching experience to focus your attention on just a few things. It has opened up a whole new vision and palate for me. It’s very exciting.

In closing, we'd like your thoughts on the underground dance music scene at large. Independent dance music is finding its way into more and more corners of the globe, and into more "commercial" arenas (like TV ads, stores, and large festivals like Ultra). What is your prediction of where the scene is going? Is dance music headed to a similar fate, or will it manage to retain some of the grittiness of the underground even as it's exposed to more daylight?  I hope it doesn't sound too controversial to say this, but I truly don't even think about this sort of thing. I find it to be a waste of time. I don't really care about trends and their impact on popular culture. I do care about how our industry might be more conscious and involved in aspects of our culture that matter, meaning, how underground dance music can be an effective medium for progressive social change. Beyond that, it’s merely fodder for those who give a damn about what’s popular and what’s not.

Homeless Hitchhiker Saves Woman From Racist Jesus

A man driving down the street in Fresno, California, suddenly proclaimed himself to be Jesus Christ and began shouting the n-word. He then drove his car into a black male, pinning him against his truck, and then started beating up a nearby woman.

Now here's where it gets crazy.

The man in question had picked up a homeless man named Kai, who upon witnessing these heinous acts, immediately lept into action. Unbeknowst to the false Jesus, Kai carries a hatchet with him, and began to swiftly bludgeon the offender as he assaulted the woman.

All in a day's work.

Kai then catapulted himself into internet fame by delivering this profanity filled interview that rivals any we've ever seen on TV. Enjoy. And thank the stars for everything remotely normal in your life.

Ikea Target DJs With New Advert

Those savvy cats at Ikea have a new market they're targeting: DJs. In their new advert, which plays out like a mini doco, the mega furniture and homewares chain help out Harry - an English DJ who's making life hell for his wife and young son by having his 4500 strong record collection cluttering up their home. So of course Ikea come to the rescue and pimp out Harry's room 'renovation-rescue' style.

Have a watch of the ad below, it's actually pretty cool. And clever too. Somewhere out there an Ikea marketing exec is celebrating by drinking champagne from the bottle and getting, as Super Hans from Peep Show would put it, "his cock sucked by a big Alsatian dog".

Rapid Fire With Butch

German electronic maestro Butch is on his way to Australia this weekend, bringing his chunky, versatile and defined sound to lucky punters down under including a set at Sydney's Abercrombie Hotel for Mantra Collective. On the eve of his arrival, Telly Maragopoulos shoots a rapid fire Q&A to the man about his epic release resume, his home country, and thoughts on popular music.

How does the Sydney crowd compare with the rest of the world? I'm under the impression that you guys are really open to experimental sounds and I feel really free to just do what I feel in the moment. Other places I stick more with my safety nets, with you guys I know that you want to hear the far out kind of music, I can really go wild with you all down under!

You have over 100 releases under your belt. How do you manage to balance this with touring and your personal life? Funny you should ask me that, my wife is complaining why I'm not spending time with her as we speak. It's really a difficult balancing act, but where there's a will, there's a wayl, as they say.

When you are producing, how does your approach change when making an album compared to an EP? An album has to have a connecting flow to me. Not that every track has to have the same vibe, far from it, but the listener has to enjoy what he is listening to at that very moment as well as want to know where it comes from and where it is leading up to. An EP isn't as tightly woven, the songs might be related but they also stand more for themselves.

What are some of your influences outside of electronic music? Every sound and every note.

Increasingly we’re seeing more and more commercialisation and money being invested in electronic music. What are your thoughts on this explosion of popularity in the U.S.A.? I guess it'll be the same as with any kind of music, it happend to rap, it happend to rock 'n' roll before that. First Little Richard and then Elvis Presley. First A Tribe Called Quest and then Vanilla Ice. Certain interest groups acknowledge the financial potential of a sector, but instead of supporting what really made it popular in the first place, they push money into uninspired acts to sound like acts which are successful, just with a little less edge and more mainstream appeal. It's sad, really.

Have you noticed an impact of this in Europe? Yes, very much so.

Your home country Germany remains a hot bed and epicentre of quality house, tech house and techno. What do you think drives this creativity and underground scene? If I knew, I'd tell you. Maybe it's the weather, people get more sun than in the Scandinavian countries, so they don't get too depressed, but don't get as much sun as maybe the Spanish, so the Germans can work all day, every day. Germany truly is the paradise for the working man and I guess many German music producers also have a strong working moral. But as I say, it's only a theory!

What track are you most proud of from your own production? I love all my children (grins). If I had to put one or two on a pedestal, it'd be “Nomad” and “Faith”. They're special to me, but as I say, all my babies are!

What’s your favourite track at the moment by another artist? Snoop Dogg's '(OJ) Wake Up'. Can't get that song out of my head right now (laughs).

You are playing at Mantra Collective’s day party! What can your audience look forward to most from your show? Anything can happen, we will see what the moment brings. I know I will embrace it fully and I'd love to share that with you guys!

Quick Fire: Mark E

In the world of dance music there’s nothing more satisfying than a producer ad DJ who evolves. Mark E fits perfectly into that bracket, an artist who's had a very clear and specific sound based around looped disco when he first came onto the scene who has since incorporated the more musical and fully enveloping shades of house and techno. Ahead of him playing for Freeze at their Bedrock Warehouse event in Liverpool on Saturday February 9th, Jimmy Coultas had a very quick q&a to discuss his influences, changing production ethics and the merits of the west midlands as a starting point for dance music culture.

Your music tends to be built around a lot of loops, both the earlier disco edits you became renowned for and a lot of the more house and techno focused grooves you have been crafting recently. Why do you think dance music still manages to be at its best when focusing on being hypnotic? Dance music is at its best on all different levels I think, but I tend not to think too much on the whys and hows, to me it just IS. My earlier work did focus on loops I agree, mainly due to how naive I was as a producer but even the very regimental early work / edits contrasted pleasingly against the flowing nature of the original I feel.

Have you always been fascinated by this particular brand of dance music?Who would you rate as the best exponents of the art form? I really like Linkwood, Omar S, A Sagitariun, Split Secs and Sandwell District.

You’re playing for Liverpool promoters Freeze shortly as part of their Bedrock warehouse party. Is there anyone on the bill you’re particularly excited about playing alongside and have you played in the city before? If so what was your experience of it like? I’m really looking forward to meeting and playing with Greg Wilson, one of the original edit masters, and very interested to hear what he plays these days. My first and only gig in Liverpool was probably one of the worst of my DJing career that I wont go into, but I’m sure this Saturday will be a very different occasion.

You’re originally from Wolverhampton and now reside in Birmingham. What’s your understanding of the west midlands music scene, and do you feel like it’s informed your style in many ways? It informed my style in every way. Believe it or not in the 90’s Wolverhampton hosted every major DJ from all over the world, so as a teenager I could get the bus and be in a club 30 minutes later listening to Frankie Knuckles; it was quite bizarre thinking back now, but it happened. And then later the scene in Birmingham was equally as exciting, nights like Jigsawmusic, Bambam & Leftfoot all inspired and nurtured my musical tastes.

Your label Merc began as an outlet for your work but over time has incorporated the work of others as well; is this balance likely to continue? What can we expect from it in the future? Yes I see this continuing, there will be another Chicago damn releases this year.

The traditional ‘big’ events in dance music, Miami’ WMC and Ibiza season, are nearing. Do they register on your radar at all? I have never played at the WMC but I’d love to make it over at some point, and then for Ibiza; I played at Space a few years ago which was a lot of fun. My summers over the last few years have consisted of gigs at Sonar and Croatia, both of which I hope to make it out to again this year.

And finally, dream situation time. You can go back to any period in clubland history, and play at any club. Who would you have playing alongside you and what tune would you drop that would define the evening? Out of all the most amazing places you could chose like the Paradise Garage with Larry Levan, the Music Box with Ron Hardy, or Amnesia with Alfredo, these places should belong as a perfect vision in your mind. So I would honestly love to be a fly on the wall at my first ever gig in the basement of SLAM nightclub in Wolverhampton in 1994, beats them all in my mind.

Catch Mark E playing the Bedrock Party on the 9th February at Camp & Furness Liverpool. Grab tickets from here.

Pulse Loves... Synkro

In today's musical climate, it's no surprise to see artists shift and morph their sound. Synkro un-arguably falls into this category, as he continues to make bold moves in the realms of bass music and more 4-4 aimed strains of dance music. Experimenting with structure, ambiance and tempo, Synkro - has found his latest creative pah through his hook up ith the re-invigorated Apollo Records stable, recently dropping his fourth EP to date for the label. ith further releases lined up on Exit, Autonomic, Brownswood Recordings, Blackout Music, Critical, Warm Communications, Pushing Red, Mindset and Box Clever, Synkro's name is one that keep re-appearing under the wings of some of the best imprints in the world. Check his excluisve Pulse Loves mix and read what the young Manchester producer had to say..

[See underneath for tracklisting]

Pulse loves...Manchester. How does your home city influence the music you make? I'm not actually living in Manchester at the moment, I'm back at my parents which is just on the outskirts. Its a small rural village in Derbyshire called New Mills, but it doesn't have too much influence on my music really. I get a lot from travelling, I have been playing a lot of DJ bookings over the past few years so I'm never at home for to long.

Pulse loves...water. Your productions often have this rainy day aesthetic. How do you achieve it, and is it something you do deliberately? That probably has something to do with where I'm from, haha. I cant drive so I walk everywhere & use a lot of public transport, this usually involves me waiting around in the rain a lot. I make a lot of music when I'm travelling if i get the chance, so i guess that's why it comes out in my production.

Pulse loves...guitar. The new record has your guitar playing and vocals on it. What inspired that movement towards acoustic instruments? I have played guitar for a long time now, since i was seven or something? My parents are pretty musical so they encouraged me to play instruments from an early age, i have played the drums for as long as i can remember. I was in a lot of bands growing up & got pretty tired of it early on so decided to dig deeper into electronic music & got completely carried away with it. But recently i have been going back to my guitars & drums so i decided to incorporate it into my electronic music. This has a lot to do with working on the Kiyoko album with my good friend Jack who also has a solo EP as Bering Strait coming out on Apollo very soon. But singing on one of my own tracks ('Don't Want') this was a first for me. I'm not sure why i did it, it just felt natural at the time so i recorded it.

Pulse loves...Apollo. What was it like working with the label? Its been really great working with Rennat, Sabine & everyone at R&S / Apollo Records. I have a lot more freedom to do whatever i want on Apollo, they have a very eclectic back catalogue with some really amazing music from all genres and I'm honoured to be part of it. Working on the Model 500 remix was amazing & playing the first R&S party in Brussels alongside Juan Atkins, Frank De Wulf, James Blake & everyone else on my birthday last year was great fun.

Pulse loves...your mix. What was the inspiration behind it, and can you tell us something about the tracks? The mix is quite similar to how i play in a club, a mixture of down tempo stuff & a couple of dancefloor tunes. It's pretty short but there's a lot of new material in there, a couple of unheard tracks from my Acceptance EP and a few more tunes from some of my favourite artists at the moment. Theres also a remix i recently finished for Snow Patrol in there & one tune i made with my girlfriend on vocals which should be getting a release at some point this year along with another dub that's been going around for a while.

Pulse loves...the future. What's upcoming for you? I'm still in the process of finishing my first full length album for Apollo & hopefully it should be out before the end of the year, but I'm not rushing it. Before then there is a Kiyoko EP coming out on Samurai Music's Horo label towards the end of February. A few more remixes on the way and more DJ bookings i guess.

Shazam Strikes Deal With Beatport for 1.5 Million Songs

In yet another win for trainspotters, and a potential blow to the art of DJing, Shazam has struck a deal with Beatport to incorporate over 1.5 million songs into its inventory. The smartphone app that has enabled 275 million people to discover new music will beef up its catalog significantly with this deal.

As an indicator of how big the genre is becoming, 31 of Shazam's most tagged songs in 2012 were in the "dance" category. Because of the way Shazam processes songs, it will be able to detect tunes regardless of their pitch, speed, or interfering sounds (like a crowd, air cannon, or raging bull horn in your ear).

Undoubtedly, this is fantastic news to many. Punters will get to discover their favorite songs, and producers will get more recognition for their work. However, the DJs that spend countless hours digging through tracks to find rare and under-played gems may find themselves greeted by a handful of phones, and a less than rare collection when everyone else starts buying the same records.

There is no doubt that dance music is quickly becoming the music of choice for major markets around the world - what that means for the once-underground genre is to be determined.

Bob Marley is a beloved figure for musicians and fans across almost every genre. His pioneering reggae sounds and powerful lyrics found an audience around the world. If he were alive today, February 6th, 2013, he would have turned 68.

Marley died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36, after being an active musician for over 18 years. He spread both Reggae and the Rastafarian religion through his music. The posthumous album, 'Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers," is credited as the best selling reggae album of all time - it sold 10 million copies in the United States and approximately 25 million worldwide.

Marley is survived by Ziggy and his 10 other children, Sharon, Cedella, Stephen, Robbie, Rohan, Karen, Stephanie, Julian, Ky-Mani and Damian. Several of these have continued Bob's legacy, most notably Ziggy and Damian.

So on this day, play your favorite Marley tune, and light one up. As Ziggy says, "If you love Bob’s music, well guess what, herb is a part of Bob’s music."

Crosstown Rebels has just announced the lineup for its mammoth WMC party, Get Lost Miami at the Electric Pickle. It will take place on Saturday March 23rd of this year, and features an all star cast with some surprises. Staples like Subb-An, Damian Lazarus, Fur Coat, and Francesca Lombardo are joined by a host of artists including Droog, Clive Henry, Tiga, Tini, and DJ Sneak. Surprises so far include UK dubstep master Skream, as well as Just Be, formerly Bushwacka from Laya & Bushwacka. More surprises to come!

If you haven't already, check out our review of last year's Get Lost party for an idea of how big this party is.

Here's what Crosstown says:

"Are you ready to Get Lost?

An offbeat Miami sidewalk during the early morning hours, far from the glamour of South Beach, the ominous repetitive rumble of bass reaches a line of revelers waiting under a flickering neon sign. A door opens, the partygoers, all shapes and sizes, creeds and colors, find themselves ushered in, only to Get Lost…

Over the last eight years Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels’ Get Lost party at the Electric Pickle has become the cornerstone of Miami Music Week. A focal point for those looking to experience something different in the overcrowded party scene, a surefire destination at which to hear cutting edge music, and see some of dance musics most exciting names, take audiences on mind-bending musical journeys.

2013 will set a new precedent, as Crosstown Rebels celebrate its tenth anniversary at Get Lost Miami. A combination of the label's artists including Infinity Ink, Fur Coat, Subb-An and Francesca Lombardo will be joined by some extra special friends like Carl Craig, Eats Everything, Heidi, Tiga, Tini, Skream and Sneak, over the course of the 18 hour marathon.

While the headlining talent at Get Lost might be unmatched, those who have attended previous Get Lost events know, it is often those guests who sets are unannounced that provide some of the most inspiring and memorable moments of Miami Music Week.

This year as ever, Get Lost will take over all areas of the Electric Pickle for an immersive musical experience. Starting EARLY Saturday morning in the dual interior rooms, the Rebels will subversively soundtrack your after-hours, before opening up the Pickle’s (extended) outdoor terrace at 11am for a full day of sundrenched musical madness.

Get Lost Miami will be a marquee stop on the colossal 10 years of Crosstown Rebel Rave 2013 tour, which sees the Rebels cross five continents and eighteen countries, led by label founder and flagship artist, Damian Lazarus. The past twelve months has seen Crosstown Rebels launch a mystical festival, Day Zero, and reconnect with classic artists from the label’s history such as Mathew Jonson, Jamie Jones, Tiga & Dinky as well as typically introducing a sea of new faces such as Francesca Lombardo, Amirali, Fur Coat and Aidan Lavelle.

The ten year celebration year looks to be one of the most exciting in the label’s history, with albums from key label artists and new talents, and Get Lost stages and stops at some of the world’s biggest and best festival and club events.

LIMITED tickets for Get Lost Miami will be sold at the door from 11am on the day of the event... ADVANCE tickets are strongly recommended.

Crosstown Rebels will be making a donation to Miami based charity American Children's Orchestras for Peace who provide music services for underprivileged children."
