Joakim Previews 'Tropics of Love'

0
0

French legend Joakim has put a fresh spin on a Neil Young classic. Recorded in Paris and edited in New York, the cover acts as a teaser ahead of Joakim’s upcoming LP ‘Tropics of Love’ out May 26th on Because Music.

This intriguing rework is a bold and exciting move on the part of the French DJ and producer, forever pushing the envelope with his edits and remixes. In addition to Joakim’s own version, the artist has included a number of other remixes, from CFCF and Principles Of Geometry.

So says the artist himself:

"This is the cover of one of my favorite songs by Neil Young. When I first heard that song, I felt like I should have written it. The lyrics are so dark and beautiful, they relate to the slightly autistic part that a lot of artists are hiding and the artist condition in general. But I'm no Neil Young when it comes to song-writing, so instead of trying to write something as good, I decided to make a cover, twist that blues tune and turn it into something completely different"

Lorca 'Forgive Me Love/Naoko'

Lorca
'Forgive Me Love'/'Naoko'
Naked Naked

Responsible for one of the standout releases of 2013 in the form of the If I Told You EP, Lorca returns with Forgive Me Love/Naoko on Breach’s Naked Naked imprint, which reaches the lofty standards set by its predecessor and solidifies the talented producer’s reputation as one of the finest purveyors of warmth and soul going round.

Forgive Me Love is an uplifting, emotive trip that straddles the line between classic UK garage and modern house music. A deep, punchy bassline, shuffly percussion and syncopated beats give the track some attitude, but the gradually building chords, sparkling harps and forlorn vocal make it perfect for when the dancefloor is ready to have a “moment”.

On the flip, Naoko is a subtler, more elegant affair. With its charming lead synth that sounds like something out of a medieval fantasy movie, rolling bassline, delightful atmospherics and restrained percussion, Naoko bounces along with flair and warmth.

Tigerlily: Mermaid on a Mission

0
0

Last week, Pulse caught up with Sydney DJ Tigerlily.

After bursting onto the scene through the Your Shot DJ competition, the last two years have been a whirlwind for Maroubra local Dara Hayes. Sets at Future Music and Creamfields, as well as opening for Avicii, Tommy Trash and Tiesto are but a few of the highlights for the former retail girl. With an enormous 2014 ahead of her, Tigerlily took a moment out of her day to update us on her latest.

You grew up in Maroubra. With your touring schedule etc., do you get much time at home?

I’ve been pretty flat out lately. I recently had something like 14 flights in 8 days so that was pretty exhausting. I’m home all week this week, though. It’s nice to come home to my parents.

What is your first memory of Dance music? Is there a particular club/record that first drew you in?
I remember being at Hot Damn (at the Spectrum) and thinking “I can play better than this”. My eyes opened up from there. I always wanted to get into music, but I’d never thought about DJing. I’d be trained classically as a musician (piano, trombone, guitar) and only ever seriously thought about teaching. Once I discovered DJing though, I never looked back.

Where does your music work best? Hot summer festival or dark, seedy, after-hours club?

I think my music works in either setting. Personally I prefer playing big outdoor festivals, but I think my music suits either environment.

Do you customize your shows or is there a standard Tigerlily set?

To some degree. If I’m playing a support slot then I try to adapt my show to the DJ I’m playing for. I also try to customize my sets for particular cities. For instance, when I play in Melbourne, I know the fans there like bouncier tracks. I don’t have a lot of stuff like that, but I do what I can do suit their tastes.

You’ve recently returned from touring Asia. Do different audiences and cultures respond to your music differently?

Audiences in Asia were really great. When I was over there (with Tiesto), the response was really positive. I was playing more proggy-type stuff and they seemed to really dig it

Did anywhere really surprise you?
Kuala Lumpur was a real eye opener. It was the last show of the tour and it was huge! I’d never seen 30,000 people, let alone played in front of them.

Whats your routine at a festival? Side of stage or tour bus?
I’m very relaxed about my sets. I’ve heard other DJs who plan everything down to a tee, but I like to work off the crowd’s energy. I like to hang out side of stage, watching my friend’s play, or watching some of my heroes do their thing.

Have you had any incidents with crowds?
Sometimes I like walking into the audience but I’ve learnt I need to be careful with that. Audiences in Sydney can get pretty ‘grabby’

Any pre-gig rituals?
I don’t really have any rituals aside from the typical hair and make-up. The hair requires a bit of maintenance.

You’ve worked with a number of prominent artists. What is your dream collaboration?
I’d really love to work with Deadmau5 at some point. He’s a big part of me getting into EDM. Also the Krewella Girls they make some really great music.

Can you offer any advice to girls getting into DJing?
In my experience, this industry is pretty cut-throat, but as long as you are persistent and you stick to your guns, the world is your oyster.

Robert F.X. Sillerman Has A Message

0
0

It seems like every day, Robert Sillerman buys another chunk of electronic music. He and his company, SFX, have clearly stated their intentions of building a billion dollar dance music empire, and he's spent nearly that snatching up all the competition. Today, Sillerman arrived in Miami, and as he got off the plane greeted the camera with this display.

Sillerman has been busy so far in 2014, partnering with beverage giant InBev just before the new year, as well as with American radio giant Clear Channel in January, which will give his recently acquired Beatport a top 20 countdown show alongside Ryan Seacrest.

Sillerman's company has also aquired ID&T, which produce festivals like Sensation, Mysteryland, Q-Dance and Tomorrowland, as well as Made Event, the organizers of New York City's Electric Zoo, and German promoter i-Motion, organizers of the Nature One festival for $21 million, and reached a deal with Roberto Midina, organizer of the Rock in Rio festival series, to acquire a 50% stake in a new entity that will own the rock music festival. Sillerman also plans to bring that festival to the United States for the first time ever. He is also being sued by three dance music industry veterans who claim Sillerman defrauded them.

Future Gods presents Nina Kraviz in SA

0
0

JOHANNESBURG. Siberian DJ Nina Kraviz is heading to South Africa for the first time to headline the Future Gods event series on 4th  and 5th April in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively.

A multi-faceted artist who is well known for incorporating live vocals into her DJ sets, Nina Kraviz has risen up the ranks to become one of the most prominent and productive female DJs in the world. Her relentless global touring schedule and critically acclaimed releases bear testimony to her distinctive sound and talent.

With a long time passion for house and techno that dates back to her days as a journalist, Kraviz is first and foremost a DJ, and one who showcases her first love - Chicago house and Detroit techno. Her drive to dig deep into the archives of these genres allows her to create a tapestry of past, present and future sounds - introducing her audience to where the scene has come from and where it might be heading.

Her deep, stripped back sound and uncompromising attitude has created an insatiable demand for her sets and a demanding touring schedule which has seen her playing at the world’s top festivals such as the Amsterdam Dance Event, Decibel, Awakenings, The Detroit Electronic Music Festival as well as regular appearances at clubs including Berghain, Fabric and The Warehouse Project – not to mention securing a much-coveted residency at Richie Hawtin's ENTER. project at Space in Ibiza.

Two pioneering event organizers Raymond Bloom and Juaan Ferreira are behind the Future Gods events. The pair have played a critical role in bringing out global dance brands many years ahead of the current influx. “Over last 7 years we've been bringing the Godskitchen brand to the South African market with some of the biggest names in electronic music. This platform has certainly been successful but now has little difference to the multitude of large dance music based brands and events that are pouring into the local scene.” explains Ferreira.

“The introduction of the Future Gods shows has freed us up to push the boundaries and entertain an edgier, more underground crowd who are crying out for a taste of what the leading cities in the world are enjoying right now” he continues, “Nina Kraviz, in this respect is perfect! We have no doubt that she will serve up a no holds barred set of music, delivered with the kind of attitude that has made her one of the most fiercely debated DJ/producers of the underground dance music movement. What could be better?”.

Nina Kravis will perform on Friday 4th April 2014 at City Hall in Cape Town and in Johannesburg at 5th April at Club And at The Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein. Nina Kraviz will be supported by Killer Robot and Coco Loco at both events.

Science Explains What Women Want On The Dancefloor

0
0

If you've ever wondered why your dance moves seem to repel women, you may need to shake your hips more.

A group of evolutionary biologists wanted to single out exactly what body movements were more attractive to women on the dance floor. But since things like looks, perceived status, and sobriety can skew real world results, they had 30 men dance to a drum beat for 30 seconds each, giving the men no instructions on how to dance before hand.

The researchers then compiled the moves into a "featureless, gender-neutral" computer-generated avatar, which was viewed and rated by women using a 7-point scale. To give you a better idea of the results, check out the  "good dancer" here.

This poor guy has no moves.

Dancers were rated higher when they showed larger and more wide ranging movements of the head, neck and torso, arm movements tended to matter very little. Speed of leg movements, particularly the right knee, factored in significantly as well.

Something to think about next time tequila is telling you to but a move.

Tracks to Do It To: For the Deep House Lovers

0
0

A deep house fan and local DJs with good reputations suggest a track to add to your playlist for every day of the week. The beauty of living in this day is that technology allows us to create a soundtrack for our lives.  It doesn’t matter where we are or what we’re doing; iPods, iPads, Bluetooth car radios and smartphones keep the music going all day and night. There’s a track to add to your playlist for every day of the week and some DJs with deep house knowledge give their suggestions too.

That Mundane Monday

DJ’s choice – Jo Deepa: Keep You Kimi by Hird

Writer’s choice: Deeper Love by Harley and Muscle (KARU remix)

You’re stuck in the traffic when you’d rather be dancing on beach sand; you’re feeling tender from a weekend of stomping, but you got laid so it’s not the worst Monday ever.  Sit back, let the taxi cut you off and crank this track up to a volume that won’t bust your head open.  You’ll be singing along and reminiscing of nights when you were younger, and in a flash, Monday will be over!

To-Do Tuesday

DJ’s choice – Mig Madiq: A mix would probably be best so a Sven Weiseman mix to soothe my soul.

Writer’s choice: Benediction by Hot Natured and Ali Love

You spent the weekend in the club and in recovery instead of ironing your collared shirts, so it’s time to churn out the chores with some uplifting tracks. Again, this is the perfect opportunity to sing along – Hot Natured and Ali Love, for example, have perfectly incorporated a funky retro sound with modern badass bass lines.

Hey baby, it’s Hump Day - Wednesday

DJ’s choice – Thulani the Warrior: We Here About Love by Crazy Penis (I think the name and title says it all!)

Writer’s choice: Standing Still by Nathan Drew Larsen

They don’t just call it hump day because it’s the middle of the week, you know. Get your little black-book out and find someone to plan a romantic night in with. Everybody knows the music sets the mood so don’t forget to include this track on your playlist if you’re looking to get lucky.

Thirsty Thursday

DJ’s choice – Mr Mon: Sunny by Umani

Writer’s choice:  Ducks in the Kiddie Pool by Click Click

The bar, the beats, the beautiful peeps – they’re all calling your name and who are you to ignore them? Stick this track on your USB and prepare for the weekend.  Enjoy it now because tomorrow morning you’re not going to want to hear it  - trust me.

TGIF!

DJ’s choice – Whitey D’vine: For the Time Being by Phonique

Writer’s choice: Bring Me Forth by Nuno Estevez feat. Riccardo Benigno

Be cocky to your boss, chuck your papers in the air and untuck that shirt – your Friday party track is a special one and it better be something that can excite you and everyone around you.  When you get home, play these tracks for your girlfriend and she definitely won’t ask for a movie night in.

Sweet Saturday

DJ’s choice- Missred: Someday by Martin Solveig

Writer’s choice: A Feeling Deep Inside by Karu

Make it a throwback Saturday with the tracks you used to love, but aren’t likely to hear in the club these days.  Remember how  Someday used to make the crowd lose it? It’s now the perfect track to lose it in your living room with a couple of mates.

Take it to Church Sunday

DJ’s choice- Grant Bunts: Scott’s Groove by Organ Nights

Writer’s choice:  Sean by Iya (Erics 2wfu dub remix)

It’s Sunday and it’s time to bring out the soulful sounds deep house is known to provide. Something chilled with gentle vocals to soothe your hangover is exactly what you need to finish off the week.

Shazam Now Identifies Vinyl-Only Tracks

0
0

Despite its amazing and seemingly impossible ability to identify a snippet of that tune you hear out, clubbers have always been limited by Shazam since vinyl-only releases were never included in its extensive track databases. Now, that’s all about to change – Shazam has just inked a deal with online music retailer Juno which means that Juno’s full vinyl release catalog of about four million songs will now be identifiable using the popular app.

The arrangement follows a similar partnership between Shazam and Beatport last year. Will Mills, Shazam’s VP of Music and Content explained the company’s motivation for the agreement when he spoke about how “vinyl music is seeing a resurgence in the industry, with sales at their highest for 15 years. Crucially some of the most important and exciting new music is released on vinyl first before later hitting digital.”

Shazam is an app on the rise and is constantly looking for new ways to expand. It recently announced its AutoShazam feature, which allows the app to “background listen” to music and store ID information for access at a later time. Shazam is also teaming up with Warner Music Group for a new record label.

Mountain Sounds Festival: In Review

0
0

As we approached the rainbow archway that marked the entrance to the inaugural Mountain Sounds festival, it became clear from the tie dyed muscle tees, colourfully printed socks and smocks that everyone was set to chill out and have fun.

Upon entering the festival, we were greeted with the two main adjacent stages, Moon and Fire, a whole heap of hay bails and one of the most popular areas of the site – Couchland.

Playing after Roof on the Moon stage, Wordlife got the early arrivers moving during their high paced set. One remix that stood out in particular was their recent rework of The Preset’s latest single ‘Goodbye Future.’ Combining the song’s instantly recognizable vocals with their slow burning synth and subtle drop, Wordlife created palpable excitement throughout the crowd and set the bar for the rest of the day.

Sticking with the W’s, World’s End Press took over the adjoining Fire Stage straight after Wordlife. Fresh off their tour where they supported French electronic legends Phoenix, WEP blew everyone away with their onstage presence and energy. At one point dancing on the speakers, the four-piece band looked as though they were having the time of their lives. Those that gathered to watch them perform appeared un-phased by the beating sun overhead, and instead began to move in sync to the Melbourne electro-outfit’s driving beats. The beauty of the Mountain Sounds crowd was its diversity and individuality. Looking around during ‘To Send Our Love’ you could see people moving in a manner of different ways, all to the same song. Some would sway gently, taking in and enjoying the moment, while others jumped and laughed with enthusiasm.

Walking around the Mount Penang gardens site, it was clear that this diversity made the festival very different to others before it. The location also played a large part in the atmosphere. Situating the festival in a paddock just inland from the coast had the effect of removing everyone from the city, surrounding them with nature – complete with horses in the neighbouring field. A pink phallic statue near the Flag Stage aptly described the feelings of many in attendance - ‘Don’t be a dickhead,’ while shaggy kids with tanned skin and sun-bleached hair dominated the landscape, bringing with them a relaxed beach vibe.

Softwar took over the Club Mod stage mid afternoon. Playing from the inside of an old school van, which was inherently cool, they got the small crowd that had gathered for their set up and moving in time with the strong percussion. Matching their energy with the up-tempo nature of the music, many also enjoyed a sing-along to the warped lyrics featured in many of Softwar’s tracks.

Back on the Moon stage, Yolanda Be Cooljumped straight into their set following Snakadaktal. As the group of people migrated from one side of the main area to the other, the crowd noises in their set soon became indistinguishable from the real crowd’s whoops and yells.

Much like Big Day Out, the two main stages functioned so that as soon as one act ended, another began. However what made Mountain Sounds different was the alternating sets between bands and DJs. While at other festivals the two stages normally play host to what is sometimes a wide variety of different sounding acts, after each band set at Mountain Sounds you knew you could expect a high quality DJ set to follow. Giving the crowd this consistency, and guaranteeing them a good solid dance in between some of the more indie-rock bands succeeded at transforming the buzz of excitement after a band left the stage into an infectious energy that spurred people to keep on dancing.

Back down on the Flag stage, LDRU summoned the rain with his set, including the recent hit suitably titled ‘The Tropics.’ As the storm rolled in from the south and the dark, threatening clouds approached, punters suddenly found themselves going from one extreme to another. Just as the lightning began to illuminate the distant horizon, an individual dressed as Jesus climbed atop a hay bail stack in the middle of the LDRU crowd. Much to the crowd’s delight and laughter, he proceeded to take credit for the impending storm, raising his hands high and creating a very neo-biblical scene.

Just as quickly as it had arrived, the storm passed with nothing but a sprinkling of rain. Sydney twins Cosmo’s Midnight didn’t let the tumultuous weather stop them from smashing through their set with balance and energy. Those present were treated to a range of the twins’ remixes, as well as their original tracks. Showing the breadth of their producing ability, their set included numbers ranging from their trill infused ‘The Dofflin’’ to the more soulful and subdued ‘Phantasm feat. Nicole Millar.’

In a move that encapsulated the sentiment of the day, a group of people looking to make the most of the final rays strung together a series of cloths to form a giant skip rope, inviting whomever wanted to join. The rope was surprisingly successful, attracting a series of cheering onlookers.

One of the last acts on the Flag stage, Beni, began to play in the early evening. Proving why he is one of the best at his craft, his set provided the perfect soundtrack to take everyone from day to night. Opening with a bass driven number, his set moved seamlessly between his heavier house tracks and his more recent electro-pop fusions such as his own ‘Love on the Run.’

As we hear more and more about the ‘fall of the festival’ and the dying viability of many of the bigger, more commercial festivals, Mountain Sounds appeared to be a welcomed alternative. There was no low point to the day, and despite a pretty heavy police presence, there were no outbursts of serious violence or anger. All those who headed along appeared to do so with the sincerest of motives – to enjoy a whole range of great music in the beauty of the Central Coast.

Moby, Wolfgang Gartner & Sander Kleinenberg Come Together for ‘Before We Were Kings’ Documentary

“Music saved my life.” You hear it all the time, and now three popular dance music DJs are coming together to share their personal stories about the healing powers of music. Moby, Wolfgang Gartner, and Sander Kleinenberg among others are featured in the forthcoming documentary ‘Before We Were Kings’ to explore music as a form of therapy.

The film aims to profile successful artists who have experienced difficulty blending into social settings, but have found a way through DJing. The filmmakers believe that “music can be just as helpful as Xanax to someone who has anxiety or depression . . . those on the autism spectrum, with speech impairments, or stroke victims.”

The documentary, directed by Brandon Ross of Ross Moving Pictures, already has the support of Nordoff Robbins Center for Music Therapy at NYU, the American Music Therapy Association, Ibizan non-profit Last Night a DJ Saved My Live, and DJ School, but it still looking for more financial and media support to complete the film. Donate to the project on Kickstarter– contributions will be rewarded with offical merchandise including hats, t-shirts, hoodies, vinyl, posters, and more.

Checking in with HELENA

UK-born, Australian-raised, and LA-based DJ/producer HELENA is someone you should be on the look out for. Her electro, progressive, and house original productions have been released on labels such as Sony Music, Mutants, Big & Dirty, and Basik Rkrds, and she is set to release her newest track, "Levity," on Ultra Records this week. Be sure to catch her at Miami Music Week 2014 at "The Revolution" with a collection of dance music legends, as well as several other parties she'll be playing. We had a chance to catch up with HELENA ahead of her busy MMW schedule to chat about her musical background, moving to the United States, why she's excited about playing in Miami this week, and what we can look forward to seeing from her in the future.

For those who don’t know, tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into DJing. I got into DJing firstly as a hobby when I was 14 years old and I started messing about on the decks. I grew up in the UK and I used to play sometimes at friends' house parties and backrooms of clubs for fun. I was mainly running clubs then in England, and I only started to really concentrate on DJing properly about five years ago in Australia.  That's when I guess I would have called myself a "DJ." Since then I have played at lots of amazing shows all over the world. Each year has gotten better and better though - it's been quite the journey to get to this point!

You’ve stated that you’ve been into dance music and many of its genres (i.e. house, techno, etc.) for a long time. How did you get into producing Progressive/Electro/House and have you experimented with different genres? I was always into house music from as far back as I can remember, so when I started playing house it was my true sound and choice. I did of course like other genres - I liked techno and drum and bass for a while, but I always loved the tougher end of house. That is why when I started DJ'ing. I went towards electro and progressive as I love the energy this music brings. I do still love doing house sets when I can at pool parties and warm up sets, and I think you can still hear a big house influence in my style.

You moved to LA from Australia in September. How’s the US been treating you and what prompted you to make the move? It's been amazing. My shows here have been next level and I feel it's been instrumental in my growth helping me to develop even further. I truly felt I hit a block in Australia where I had achieved everything I set out to do when I started playing here. I felt there was no room for me to grow anymore. I had to go - there was no doubt in my mind.

When I got signed by Spin Agency in the States last year, the shows for me in the US started building so well. I was coming back to Australia and started feeling like I needed to be back in America immediately. That was when I knew for sure it was time for me to go.
Australia has been instrumental in shaping me as an artist and I will always be forever grateful for the support and opportunities this country has given me, but I am very ambitious and I want to go as far as I can with my music, and for that I needed to leave. I am always billed as an "Australian artist" so hopefully I am doing the Aussies proud representing overseas!

You’re heading back to Miami again this year! What are you most excited about doing when you’re back in Miami? This year in Miami, I have my own party called "The Revolution" with myself and a bunch of legends including John Dahlback, The Sick Individuals, The Chainsmokers, Paris & Simo, Will Sparks, Wayne & Woods, Stafford Brothers, Lunde Bros, Feenixpawl, Bass Kleph, and more! So that will be sick. I am so excited about that. It's on Saturday the 29th at Mokai, so I have been busy prepping for this! I'll also be joining Adventure Club & Friends on Sunday at Space and I'll be playing NSA at Nikki Beach for the Swanky Tunes stage, and Arty's Together We Are Party at The Clevelander, so it should be a crazy week of shows.

You’re currently sponsored by Pioneer. How did this come about and what has been your favorite aspect of working with the brand? Pioneer have been with me from the very beginning. They believed in what I was doing and got behind me as an artist which was great since they are the world's biggest DJ brand so to have their backing was amazing. They always supported my stuff and kept me kitted out with all the latest gear. So much love for these guys!

Tell us about some highlights/epic moments in your career, thus far. Ultra Music Festival was a career highlight for sure! This year's Future Music Festival in Australia was a highlight as well. I had so much fun touring with all the crew. Pacha NYC is unreal, one of my favorites, and I love playing in Vegas - it's so much fun. I have been lucky to have had some insane shows in my career so far and to have more locked in all the time. I have some really big stuff coming up in the next few months!

What is on the horizon for HELENA? My new track "Levity" featuring Shawnee Taylor will be released the day before my Miami party on March 28th via Ultra Records, so I'm pumped about this! We are also doing an official music video which is exciting. After Miami I head to Asia for a two week tour including a huge arena show in Manilla with Alesso and Deniz Koyu which will be unreal. I also have a few tours in Europe this year, some big festival announcements and a brand new exciting residency all to be announced...

Alongside all the new music I am working on, it's set to be a big year. I am just putting my head down and working really hard right now so hopefully it all comes together!

Moby Sued By Salsoul Over 22-Year-Old Samples

New York disco and funk label VMG Salsoul is reportedly suing dance music legend Moby for copyright infringement based on samples his used in his self-titled debut album back in 1992…. That’s 22 years ago. They claim that Moby illegally used samples from “Let No Man Put Asunder” by Philadelphia girl group First Choice in two of his tracks – “Next is the E” and “Thousand.”

The case targets Moby as well as Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Warner Music Group, and Knitting Factory Records. Salsoul is demanding damages of up to $150,000 for each infringement plus profits and attorney’s fees.

This isn’t the first time that Salsoul has gone after artists over copyright complaints. They also claimed that Madonna used unlicensed samples in her track “Vogue,” and are currently appealing the court’s decision. In this case, it was ruled that Salsoul had no valid claims because “no reasonable audience would find the sampled portions qualitatively or quantitatively significant in relation to the infringing work, nor would they recognize the appropriation.”

Listen to the tracks below and let us know what you think about Salsoul's claims.
