Woolfy unveils 'City Lights'

0
0

US producer Woolfy, aka Simon James, haa released a new EP by the name ‘City Lights’. The team at Future Classic are behind this latest effort from the Californian groove-ster.

This smooth, chilled out, summery affair is the perfect accompaniment to an easy, casual afternoon by the pool. You can definitely hear James’ home state on this record. The sand and surf bleed through the synths. The California sunshine goes uncredited on this record but it has no doubt played its part. You can almost smell the ‘erb through your headphones!

The track is the seminal summer slow jam. The anthemic refrain “We live to love you” will no doubt sampled ad-nauseum, but for now it remains a charming little ditty. While the tune is firmly planted West coast, there are distinctive tropical flavours infused in the mix. I am immediately transported back to my summer holidays. Think fruity drinks with adorable little parasols.

‘City Lights’ is available digitally and as a limited edition 10′ vinyl March 31st.

The Swiss return with 'In the City'

Australia’s favourite disco duo are back with a brand spanking new EP. Entitled ‘In the City’, this funky little three track gem has a little something for everyone.

On this new release, the Australian pair reveal three original tracks. Opener ‘In the City’ is a groovy little summer jam, featuring the delightful Lavina De Santoli on vocal duties. This is followed up by genre-hopper ‘Antiquities’ which blends electro with house and disco in a sexy little 6 minute jaunt. The record closes with ‘Phase III’, where a bass heavy electro banger is mellowed by some hypnotic synth-lines.

As an extra special treat, The Swiss have thrown in a couple of remixes from some of the finest spinsters going around. Luke Million and Adapt or Die put their respective twists on The Swiss’ originals, introducing some fresh flavours to an already delectable EP. An instrumental version of the title-track also features.

Listen: Solomun Drops 'Medea'

Just in time for this year's Winter Music Conference, Diynamic boss Solomun has unleashed a brand new original on his Soundcloud. Called "Madea," it's the first original track he's debuted on his Soundcloud since Yesnomaybe 10 months ago, instead keeping eager fans satisfied with a string of remixes, like his much loved remix of Claude VonStroke's 2013 summer smash, "The Clapping Track."

For "Medea," Hamburg's finest delivers a twisted, progressive number, full of pumping energy and shimmering synths, ready for the darkest of dance floors.

This newest effort should go down perfectly this summer at Pacha, where Solomun is returning for the second year of Solomun +1, his highly successful residency there. As of now, however, it looks as though fans of his Diynamic Neon Nights at Sankeys Ibiza are in for some disappointment, as the night won't be returning for a third season.

Solomun +1 at Pacha Ibiza runs every Sunday from May 25th to October 5th, 2014.

Whitey D’Vine: Talent meets Passion

0
0

The DJ having a love affair with deep house has just dropped his first album with Do It Now Recordings.  We talk to him about Deep House Monsters, his favourite acts and big plans for the future.

He’s been the opening DJ, the headliner and the artist making your face melt at 4 in the morning.  Kyle Partridge aka Whitey D’vine is certainly one of the most underrated DJs in the country.  Now he’s dropped the kind of album deep house fans will cry over. Here’s what Whitey has to say:

What made you start DJing? I was always drawn to music.  I snuck into a club in Joburg called Reality when I was 14 and saw Brad S playing on the rooftop.  I begged my parents to buy me decks and they agreed after I blew 3 home stereos by mixing my grandfather’s old school belt driven vinyl player with music coming out the hi-fi – haha!

You’re familiar to lots of people in Joburg, where have you been playing lately? I’ve been playing at Truth, rooftops around Jozi, in Soweto and a lot of places I haven’t played before which is pretty cool.

Describe your sound in a sentence: Deep, chunky, soulful house.

Which artists feature most often on your set list? Charles Webster, Art Department, J. Axel and plenty more.

Who are your influences? There are so many.  The long list includes Frank Roger, Vini Da Vinci, Charles Webster, DJ Fresh (SA), Thulani the Warrior and of course Brad S.

What’s it like putting your own album together? It’s a life changing experience for me. I loved every step from start to finish. Thulani offered me a record deal, which I agreed to without hesitation.  It was great listening to so many tracks and hearing what’s being put out there.  It makes me want to get serious about my own productions.

Why did you sign with Do It Now Recordings to do Deep House Monsters? I love the irony of the fact that I bought my first vinyl record from Thulani the Warrior, and then he offers me a record deal with Do It Now. I also respect the fact that the label is about pure quality house music, including local and international music that’s made with passion.

What kind of sound can we expect to hear on the album? You’ll be hearing a story that combines soul with deep house.

Have you been working on your own productions? Yes I have.  You’ll be hearing, and hopefully enjoying it, very soon.

If you could land a gig anywhere in the world, where would it be? Beside a pool, anywhere, playing to all the artists whose music has influenced me.

“Music is the heartbeat of my soul.” - Whitey

Rulin returns to celebrate its 20th birthday this Saturday, 29th March at Ministry of Sound with a special appearance by the Godfather of House, Frankie Knuckles.

The UK’s pioneering house night, Rulin, was responsible for bringing over many of the US house and garage masters, helping transform dance music culture in the process, leaving an indelible mark on Britain’s clubbing landscape. Now this seminal brand is turning 20, and has invited Frankie Knuckles to the Box for this landmark event, along with DJs who’ve each played a key part in Rulin’s success, including Kenny Carpenter, Heller & Farley, and Ministry of Sound co-founder and original resident, Justin Berkmann.

After an extensive refurbishment, Ministry of Sound now features a new look for the Courtyard, a stunning new VIP suite with a viewing gallery and two new balconies overlooking both 103 and its iconic main room, The Box, while the already state-of-the-art technology was updated across the venue, making this a not-to-be missed event.

French in Techno: David Prap

0
0

Pulse Radio caught up with French-born Techno producer David Prap, who will be the headlining international act at Twilight Open air festival in SA this April.

With over 20 years’ experience in the electronic music industry, Prap is renowned in the French techno scene. Prap turns to the decks to cultivate a techno-crazed dancefloor, with a pulsing rhythm translating into deep rolling choppy tech, and multi-layered beats complimented by symphonic waves through his sound. DP tells us ‘the techno scene is very rich and has developed a lot over the last 3 years in terms of new labels and artists’, and admits that he is hungry to get into the German techno scene.

In 2005 Prap met collaborator and friend, Willy Real. The duo went into production together on another project, to make releases on labels such as Parquet Recordings / MNL / Baroque Records, with their most recent album being ‘Shamens Garden EP’. With the same palette and vision in music, he describes their style as progressive techno, very melodic, which is definitely dancefloor axed.

INLAB Recordings was launched in 2010, which marked the beginning of a new era in Prap’s music career. DP expresses that his first passion is to discover fresh unknown artists with talent for the melodic techno label.

What have you learned so far about the business side of music, and has your attitude toward the business now changed since you first started? When I started I have understood very quickly that it will be difficult to get into the business, but that it was possible and that there are opportunities for everyone. My main goal was to create a label identity and not to follow the tendencies dictated by the biggest labels. Your attitude has to change, because as soon as you decide to make money with your Music, then people mentalities change and you become more distrustful.

When you are not in studio, behind the decks, or managing your own record label, what do you spend your time doing? Music occupies 90% of my time. For the rest I eat music, I breathe music.

Is there any advice you can give to young producers out there? This is the kind of job that you choose by passion and for the pleasure.

Any upcoming projects you would like to share with us? Yes I am currently working on an INLAB Recordings tour in Germany.

What do you think are some of the leading differences between European-made techno, and the stuff coming out of, say America? Well I'd say that the European Techno is mainly influenced by the Germans and will be more minimal compare to the American style which will be more progressive and housy with the school of Chicago and Detroit.

Do you still get nervous before a set? Yes I do, and the day I will not get nervous any longer I'll stop playing..

Largest obstacles you have faced as an artist since day one? People who you go to and close doors without any explanations. So you have to keep believing in your Music.

What kind of music did you grow up listening to as a kid? I have always listened to techno.

What are you looking forward to most about playing in SA? Have you heard anything about the scene over here? I love the idea of sharing my musical universe with a different culture, find new inspirations through a new public.

I believe that you’re playing at The Eldorado Circus Show in Marseilles, France, alongside DJ’s such as Extrawelt, Julian Jeweil, and Gary Beck. Can you tell us about this festival and what it means to you? I am very thrilled to play in this festival which will be the first test, and along artist like Extrawelt who is one of my favourite artist at the moment.

Do you have any hidden talents apart from music? Probably, but it is so well hidden that I still have not discovered it.

Biggest downside about being a well-known DJ Producer? That it becomes difficult to know if people are around you by interest or genuinely.

“I cannot wait to come to SA, share my passion for Music with you guys, and see you smile on the dance floor” - DP

Thank you David for the words. We cannot wait to get a taste of your music and show you how we party!

Upcoming gigs:

22/03 - Dj set @ Back to the Origin (Manosque) with Willy Real et Johan Horses
05/04 - Twilight Open Air Festival V5.0 - Dusk Til Dawn // Johannesburg (South Africa)
11/04 - Dj set @ Electrobotik en Boite (Studio - Aix) with Barem (M_nus)
18/04 - Dj set @ Light On (Marseille) with Nikita Traxx, Miss Val..
30/04 - Dj Set @ Eldorado Circus Show (Ensues la Redonne) with Extrawelt, Julian
Jeweil, Gary Beck, Murphy vs A. Professor and Inphasia

Ellie Goulding Discusses Unlikely Relationship with Burial, An “All-Time Hero”

0
0

No one knew the identity of mysterious UK dubstep producer Burial until 2008 when he revealed himself to be William Bevan. He never appears in public or performs live, and made waves when he shared a selfie earlier this year. Very few artists have met him in person but UK popstar Ellie Goulding is an exception. She recently chatted casually about her relationship with the producer whom she says is one of her “all-time heroes" to Billboard.

“Burial’s one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met. We stay in touch, and this sounds super weird, but he kind of looks over me in a weird way.” The two have been aware of each other’s music since the beginning of their careers “from the MySpace days,” and they have always admired each other’s work.

“He’s just one of those remarkable people that you come across that are so rare – he’s so shy and quiet, but he’s really hard to explain. I’m constantly fascinated by him. I’ve only had a few encounters with him, but they were really intense. I may never see him again, but we stay in touch constantly.”

Although Goulding has taken a different approach to promoting her music by performing live around the world, she understands and admires Burial’s decision not to. “I think it’s so admirable. Obviously I make money for what I do and promote myself, but I always remember him, in everything. The nobleness of it, where you’re just making music and making people happy . . . I use a bit of that for myself.”

Bus it to Boma: AfrikaBurn fundraiser for The Bus

0
0

So, one last stop before The Burn, AfrikaBurn, but with The Bus of course. Let it be known that I tread-lightly, out of respect, when talking about AfrikaBurn as I admittedly have not been to one yet. I know that there is a particular ethos that The Burn is all about and gather that I may not fully understand it either. I don’t think you can fully-understand it unless you’ve been to one. However, in short, I think it’s safe to say that the jist of it is about sharing, and giving, positive vibes all round, something that the LEDHEDz (Creators of The Bus) are all about.

Burners I’m sure are well aware of The Bus and the blood, sweat and tears that went into it to get it to The Burn last year. I’ve been chatting to some of the guys about it, slowly fathoming the enormous amount of effort that goes into keeping this beast running, let alone making its way all the way out to Tankwa, where AfrikaBurn is held, and really, it’s all for the revellers, no-one else.

When talking about it, it doesn’t take long before you start gathering that this kind of project is rather heavy on the pocket, and when it’s non-profit, these sorts of endeavours at some stage of the game will require support.

The team behind The Bus invite you and ask that you not only bring yourself, but also all your Burner, and other curious lively friends to enjoy a cosmic experience of dancing energies, views and visuals under the stars. Afterlife will be responsible for mapping their projections onto The Bus by the way so this will be next level, believe me.

It is the perfect occasion to get acquainted with The Bus. I may not have made it to a Burn, yet, but I do know The Bus. Now is your chance. Trust me when I tell you, you don’t want to miss it in all its glory.

Also, in running up to The Burn, and the fundraiser coming up at the Ostrich Farm we all know so well, the team also have a special prize giveaway. Anyone who makes a donation of R100 or more on the LEDHEDz event Quicket purchasing page will be entered into a raffle for an AfrikaBurn ticket. The winner will be announced on Monday the 31st of March. Check out the event and full line-up below:

EVENT: THE BUS @ BOMA

Lineup:

Lt. Fizzer
Floyd Lavine
One Track Mike
Ivan Turnanjanin
Richard Marshall

The LEDHEDz have done the balloon chain, last year they did The Bus, this year the guys are bringing out another guy, Robert Bose, who knows all about the Balloon chain (We’re looking at about 300m, here) that happens at Burning Man to get stuck in so to bring you both features, The Bus and the Balloon Chain, in Africa.

Jon Cline (LEDHEDZ) says: “The LEDHEDz are a collective of creatives, artists, builders and doers. We pool all of our resources and skills and try make things that will have an impact on those who get to experience it. We are most famous for our BUS but this year we are bringing the LED Balloon chain from Burning Man to AfrikaBurn. We encourage awareness wherever we go. We respect our surroundings and how we manage our waste. This is a strong message we want people to be aware of.

Party hard but party with a conscience and get involved wherever you can.”

The DJ’s play for free, The Bus doesn’t drive itself and petrol/diesel is our pet hate here in SA...we know this. But The Bus is there for everyone, and so, needs everyone to get involved, to come have a look, experience The Bus. You can decide whether you’re jumping ‘on-board’ or not. See you on The Bus…

Chymera 'Tidal/Moot Point'

Chymera
'Tidal/Moot Point'
Ovum Recordings

After exploring deeper soundscapes and lower BPMs over the last year or so, Irish techno maestro Chymera has struck out with two peak-time belters for his latest addition to the OVUM Recordings cannon. It’s a welcome return to a sound that Chymera does so well, expertly blending stomping techno grooves with refined, emotive melodies.

Tidal is led by an ever-building synth growl which is equal parts hypnotic and ballsy, slowly rising in intensity over the course of the tune but utilising the same basic three-note pattern the whole way to maximise its impact. Over time it’s joined by warbled stabs, a grinding bassline and crisp, rolling percussion, which together make Tidal, at its peak, a proper dancefloor monster.

Moot Point sees Chymera hark back to the vibes of Ellipsis, a previous hit also released on Ovum. All the trademark elements are there that make Chymera’s music absolutely perfect for sharing a moment on the dancefloor: a warm, soulful bassline, punchy analogue drums, and lush, sparkling chords. This is 3AM-hug-the-person-next-to-you techno at its finest.

Bare Essentials Returns April 12th

When the Bare Essentials crew took some much deserved time off last year, a collective sigh was felt across Sydney. Without those precious hours at Sweeney’s Rooftop Bar, a hole developed in our fragile hearts. There was a gap, a void, an emptiness that no matter what we tried, we couldn’t quite fill. We wondered whether our weekends would ever be the same again…

The return of this iconic Sydney party last month proved to be an enormous success. A little time off proved to be no barrier, as the Bare Essentials crew showed that regardless of the venue, they still bring it.

And their upcoming event is sure to only top the last. Now at their new home, Flyover Bar, the crew are looking to build on their highly respected history. Manning the decks for the event will be Carlos Zarate, Sam Roberts, James Fazzolari, James Cripps, Tech No More and Jesse Alexander. The lads will be pumping tunes through a brand new Function 1 Sound System, reminding everyone exactly what Bare Essentials is all about. And if that wasn’t enough to get you cheesing, $10 jugs of beer, $15 jugs of cider, $5 pizzas from 3-5. Say WHAT?
