Review: Bob Moses At SXSW 2014

Pulse's Henry Johnstone heads to the Boomrat party at SXSW 2014 to catch up-and-coming NYC duo, Bob Moses.

Despite dance music – sorry, ‘EDM’ – being the biggest music genre in the USA right now, there’s something about its connotations with the future that makes it feel out of place in a city like Austin - a town steeped in a rich history of jazz, blues, country music and punk rock (unless of course you’re listening to Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up,’ which actually sounds like it was born out of America’s South than a baby-faced producer from Sweden). Austin’s musical heritage aside, the reality is that the long-running SXSW has been showcasing electronic music for years, and 2014 was no different, with a variety of sounds on offer to punters throughout the city.

One of the more interesting ‘underground’ acts playing the festival this year was New York City’s Bob Moses. And no, that’s not a dude’s name, but rather the name of two dudes, Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, a pair of Vancouver raised fellas who bumped into each other in the Big Apple and began making music together. The result has been some of the most interesting and distinctly individual deep house to materialise in the last 12 months or so, and the duo have been on my radar ever since a friend pointed me towards their superb mix for the Scissor & Thread podcast last year.

Bob Moses’ billing on the Live Nation curated Boomrat party at SXSW was a bit of a head scratcher, particularly given that they were sharing the lineup with the hyperactive beats of Just Blaze, and that the party immediately preceded the HARD showcase with the likes of EDM big-hitters like Flosstradamus, Destructo and Gorgon City. But hey, hats off to Live Nation for having the insight (and foresight, if you’re of the opinion that deep house is going to be dubstep’s successor in the USA) to book a more niche act.

Located in Austin’s warehouse district just east of downtown, the free Boomrat party was housed in a massive venue called the Hangar, situated just across the road from New York publication The Fader’s setup. Bob Moses fittingly opened the night’s proceedings, their deep and immersive sound perfectly suited to a warm up slot…even if it was only 7:30pm.

The band’s set up is deceptively simple but effective; Jimmy controls the song structures on a laptop while Tom croons his sentimental and reverb-soaked vocals, and busts out on a guitar when the song calls for it. The result is a live show that sits somewhere between an electronic pop gig and a deep house DJ set, with each song transitioning neatly into the next. The small but appreciative crowd – who you could surmise were all there to see the NY duo – most certainly approved of the moody, atmospheric and melodic house music on offer.

Highlights came in the form of the gorgeous ‘Winter’s Song,’ ‘Far From The Tree’ and THAT bassline from ‘Hands To Hold’. Criticisms? Only that the volume was a little low at times, which led to the intricacies of their music getting lost in the cavernous warehouse space. It was passable if you’re already acquainted with their music, but wouldn’t have aided in gaining any new fans.

I look forward to the opportunity to see these guys do their thing again in smaller venue more accustomed to their sound. If you get a chance to catch Bob Moses play live this year, do it. They’re two fellas on the cusp of big things.

Return of the Prins this April

Prins Thomas was previously announced to play Circoloco Sydney, in a massive triple headliner bill alongside RA number one, Dixon and New Yorkers’, The Martinez Brothers, and now Finely Tuned can announce the Prins will be playing one other additional show in Melbourne.

Responsible for a swag of the eclectic ‘space-disco’ sounds emanating from his homeland, Norway, Thomas Moen’s upbringing at the school of hard knocks only adds to his creativity within his production and DJ sets. He started playing around as a DJ as a young age yet he is inspired and excited about new music than ever before.

He has all the right ingredients one could look for in a DJ; great skills, humbleness, productions and remixes other people would kill for, and most of all, the ability to play records in a way that not only makes him sound on point, but in a way that makes punters dance. The Prins’ philosophy in life: enjoy it for the short time it lasts!

With his new album, Prins Thomas III, due to be released 28th April, just two days after the Australian tour concludes, you can be sure to revel in musical greatness at both shows. Thomas spoke of his new album, “There’s no great concept, no specific theme, no scheme, no plan… no space disco but still plenty of space, “ adding, “It’s just documentation of the music I made during the recording period – a musical diary so to speak”.

It has to be the very laid-back nature of his residency in Oslo that makes him overmodest. Joining forces with Hans Peter Lindstrøm, his own label Full Pupp has some of the best house-not-house, neo-disco or call-it-what-you-want dance music to offer.

There’s definitely no stopping the Prins now.

Tour Dates:
25.04.14 - Circoloco @ Greenwood Hotel
26.04.14 - Abbotford Convent, Melbourne

LAVO and Marquee do 'The Swap'

Two New York nightspots have joined forces to experiment with an interesting new concept. For one night only, Marquee and LAVO will share their customers. Similar to a deal the Oxford Art Factory and Q Bar have offered, one ticket will allow revelers entry to both venues.

The venues however are aesthetically world’s apart. While Marquee is a large-scale, multi-storey super club with 28-foot ceilings, LAVO is a much more intimate affair. The latter is a noted dinner and brunch spot, with a small underground dance-floor. The idea is to give punters a similar yet very different experience.

Size Records artists AN21, Max Vangeli, Third Party and Qulinez will alternate between the two clubs, switching back and forth over the course of the evening.

This groundbreaking event will take place on the 19th April.

Axwell and Sebastian collaborating with Ryan Tedder and Elton John

Ryan Tedder is challenging Pharrell Williams for the crown of Mr Everywhere.

While his name may not be as prominent the aforementioned Sk8brd P, his prints are all over the biggest tracks of the past few years. Beyonce, Adele, Kanye and Ellie Goulding have used Tedder’s work in the past, with undoubtedly more names to come. He’s running out of pies to put his fingers in!

Clumsy wordplay aside, Tedder simply doesn’t stop working. The OneRepublic man has just announced his latest project, working alongside former Swedish House Mafia duo Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell. Oh, did we mention Elton John was coming along for the ride?

The track is not Tedder’s first foray into EDM. His 2012 effort ‘Calling (Lose My Mind)’, once again with SHM, was a massive commercial success.

In an interview with Billboard, Tedder confirmed this latest anthem was complete, but was unsure about a release date. We’ll keep you posted.

Can a Song’s Lyrics Predict Its Success?

$

0

A new study has concluded that lyrics are in fact a strong predictor of a song’s commercial success. Researchers at North Carolina State University have examined key words from the lyrics of No.1 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart since the 1960s and have isolated the top 12 most common themes in these songs.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the top themes are emotional in nature and reflect cultural values and influences of the time. The most popular theme over the time period was “Breakup,” but the following themes spiked in popularity in their respective decades.

1960s: Nostalgia, Pain, Rebellion
1970s: Nostalgia, Rebellion, Jaded
1980s: Loss, Aspiration, Confusion
1990s: Loss, Inspiration, Escapism
2000s: Inspiration, Pain, Desperation

The study also found that a song’s lyrics can predict whether or not it will hit the Billboard Hot 100 with a 73.4 percent accuracy.

Neuroscience researchers have found that people process lyrics and tunes independently when listening to music, so the effects of the lyrics were separated from the music itself by controlling for music style and genre.

An Australian DJ has been arrested on child pornography charges.

41 year old Australian DJ Lucuis Lockyer was arrested for convincing an underage girl to post lewd photos of herself to pornographic websites. Lockyer had been grooming the 14-year-old British schoolgirl over skype before persuading her to pose naked for him. Lockyer then travelled to Scotland to meet the girl, but was arrested upon arrival.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stated: ‘lt started off innocently. He told me he was 33 and I didn’t see the harm in talking to him. He would tell me I was beautiful and clever and funny and we spoke every day. Then we started sending pictures to each other. He started encouraging me to upload pictures and videos of myself on to adult sites. ‘

Lockyer who was jailed for ten months on Wednesday, has already been released under Scotland's early release clause for individuals with shorter sentences. Lockyer will be placed on an offenders register after admitting to inciting a person under 18 to upload indecent images of herself on to adult websites.

Catching Up With Eric Volta

Eric Volta is an artist on the rise.  Based in London and Berlin, he recently released his 'Blood Burgundy' EP featuring vocals by Gretz on No.19 Music and is currently embarking on a North American tour which will bring him to cities like New York, Montreal, and Miami as well as appearances at major festivals like Electric Forest and the inaugural Mysteryland USA.  We had a chance to catch up with him ahead of his set tonight at No.19's Social Experiment at Output in Brooklyn to chat about his new EP, visiting and playing in New York, his recent memorable gig in South Africa, his excitement about playing at Mysteryland USA on the legendary Woodstock festival grounds, and what we can look forward to seeing from him in the future.

Your ‘Blood Burgundy’ EP featuring Gretz is out now on No. 19. How did the collaboration come about? Gretz and I were going through a bit of a rough time. It was around Christmas 2012. Gretz had just gone through a painful breakup, meanwhile I had just moved to Berlin and was quite depressed at the time. Misery loves company. We found each other and a way to cope with our losses.

In the last few weeks you’ve toured all around the world making stops in South Africa, Russia, Madrid, Italy, and more. What have been some of your recent highlights? South Africa no doubt! I have to throw it up for the guys in Johannesberg at the And Club, where they do a party called ‘Toy Toy’ (which is the name of a South African dance used to make a political stance during apartheid). I think the world forgets this was less than 20 years ago when whites and blacks couldn’t walk on the same side of the street. The result is bright and colorful people, and the vibes are of the hook. My friend Gordon runs a party in Cape Town called ‘Tropical Roast,’ which has to be the other highlight. He showed me how beautiful his country was, as we stayed in his family home. I think this was definitely my highlight. It’s something so beautiful, I can’t forget.

The next stop on your tour is Social Experiment at Output. What can guests look forward to from your set? I’m honest with what I do. I’m always touched to be able to play at places like Output.

What are some of your favorite places to go, food to eat, and things to do when you’re visiting New York? It’s only my second time ever here and this time I have made sure to be here for some extra days. To do exactly this. Discover this city.

You are also set to play at the inaugural edition of Mysteryland USA at the Sunday School Mini-Fest. What are some of the thing you’re looking forward to about bringing the legendary party to the historic Woodstock grounds? When the sun is out, I’ll be going for some interplanetary walks around Berlin thinking about these legendary grounds. The energy of a wondrous moment is caught there. Michael Shrieve’s drumming moments and Hendrix’s legendary performance. If I could come a little close even, I would be touched for life. And I hope to share that with everyone.

What do you have in store for MMW/WMC 2014? This is my first WMC, so I have no idea what to expect. I know it’s not the same as it used to be, and severely overpriced. I hope this changes. This is music for everyone. Not rich elitists.

What else is on your horizon for the coming months? Well, more music with Gretz. I’ll be producing an EP for him in the coming months. It’s his own material. The man is an angel of a human being, and I am happy and honored to have the chance to be able to help him develop and grow. There’s a remix for Art Department, remix on Pets Recordings, and some new exclusive stuff I’ve written for Timo Mass’s comp for My Favorite Robot Records coming as well.

Eric Volta North American Tour Dates:
March 21 Brooklyn, NY@ Output (No.19 Social Experiment)
March 22 Montreal, CA @ Stereo Nightclub
March 26 Miami, FL @ Wall (Modern Love Affair)
March 28 Miami, FL @ Trade (No.19 Social Experiment)
April 24 Ashville, NC @ Moog Fest (No.19 Social Experiment)
