Stepping up for this week's Pulse Radio podcast is New York-based DJ/producer and Hallucination Limited label head Three!  Three delivers to us two hours from his set at Listed Productions' PLAY after-hours party in San Francisco, which he best describes as "dub house disco."  We had a chance to catch up with him ahead of a busy touring schedule in Miami during WMC 2014 to ask him a few questions about his podcast, some of his lesser known musical influences, when we can expect his new imprint to launch, and where we can see him play in Miami.  Download his exclusive mix below - enjoy!

DOWNLOAD PULSE.163

Tell us a little about the exclusive mix you made for Pulse. How did you approach it? I have a reputation for not letting many mixes out, but when I do I use real recordings of actual nights I've played rather than doing studio mixes. Usually, I'll just pull an hour for a podcast, but I decided to give two hours for this one. It's from a recent night of my residency for Listed Productions' PLAY party in San Francisco which happens at legendary gay after-hours club The End-Up. It;s an amazing crowd to play to. This night I played 6am to 10am and this is the middle of it. Musically, the vibe is what I like to call "dub house disco" plus a couple vocals. A raw, loose San Francisco vibe to me which feels right with that early morning, mixed crowd at The End-Up.

You’ve been working on a new imprint of your label Hallucination Limited called Hallucienda. What can we look forward to from the new endeavor? Yes, that's true. A new imprint called Hallucienda will launch right after WMC in the spring. Coming from my involvement with Hallucination Recordings in the 90's and then setting up its sister label Hallucination Limited in the 00's it felt like this was the next step. Clean slate, starting from scratch, but with access to the previous catalogs so the musical lineage is still there. It's two years in the making and I'm really excited about it. There willl be some very familiar names alongside newer and lesser known artists I've been working very closely with in an A&R capacity.

What are some of your lesser known influences that your fans would be surprised to hear about? Hmm… probably late 80's industrial music. Specifically anything Alain Jourgenson and Paul Barker were involved in like Ministry, Pailhead and Revolting Cocks plus other Wax Trax label acts and Skinny Puppy, Alien Sex Fiend, Nitzer Ebb. Nice band names, right? For sake of reference, in Europe they tend to call it EBM: Electronic Body Music. As with house music, Chicago was pretty much the center of the industrial music universe and those worlds intersected more than you'd think in terms of producers like Van Christie and clubs there like Medusa's. Where I was down in the southeast U.S. was probably the third largest market for it in the country. In my late teens at "alternative music" clubs in Tampa, Florida they were playing Master C&J - Dub Love on Trax Records (which is my favorite Chicago house record ever) and Maurice - This Is Acid right next to industrial records like Skinny Puppy - Assimilate and Revolting Cocks - No Devotion and this was a huge influence on me. I learned early on if you got past the fandom of only liking one thing and really looked between the lines you may discover how connected different music scenes really are from studio techniques to personnel. It really fueled my eclectic nature. Riding that influence of the urgency and moodiness of late 80's Chicago house and industrial with the ever present New York and Miami Bass electro into early 90's rave culture was really amazing.

What do you have in store for WMC 2014?

3/21 - Miami @ Visionquest pres. Super Pleasures - Treehouse
3/27 - Miami @ Last Night On Earth / Magnetic Grooves (sunset cruise) - Biscayne Lady
3/27 - Miami @ Don't Be Leftout (after-hours) - The Bank
3/28 - Miami @ Listed Prod. / PLAY - Do Not Sit On The Furniture
3/29 - Miami @ Get Lost - Ice Palace

What else is on your horizon in the coming months? The sunny skies of spring and summer.

Sticky Labels: Music Is Love

Music Is Love. It's a simple enough expression. Easy enough to understand on the surface. But peel back the endless layers and meanings attached to both music and love, and you start to understand why such a simplistic phrase has helped develop an ethos that's carried this young record label to the forefront of today's house music scene, making it one of the most well respected imprints around. But for Oli Furness and the rest of the Music Is Love team, it's not about the vibe, the gear, or even the star power, because at Music Is Love, all are created equal. So ahead of the second show for their residency at Sankeys Manchester this Friday, we asked Oli Furness what Music Is Love is all about.

Who is behind the label and what are your backgrounds? Well, there are two owners of the label – Fletch and myself. Other than that, we have Angus Jefford who helps with A&R and events, and Sam Divine, who runs the agency connected with the label. Fletch’s background is in running events all round the world for the last 10 years, and mine is label management with absolutely no experience in that before starting Music Is Love just over a year ago.

How much is the Manchester scene an inspiration and influence on the label would you say? I wouldn’t say Manchester is an influence on the label musically really, but it’s definitely inspirational just for the people that reside in Manchester – being witness to their separate endeavours and inspired by the hard work and dedication they put in. For example the boys that run the night ZUTEKH, I remember when these guys were just starting out, and now they have a very capable brand behind them, so yeah inspiring in that way definitely

Given that there are so many new labels starting all the time, why did you start one? Why do you think you will stand out? Well, we started our label just before the ‘gold rush,’ if you will. We were planning our concepts and signing tracks in the summer of 2012, so I think we had a slight advantage on this rapid spurt on the new wave of labels. I think we stand out as we do things differently in many different ways. We hold a closed roster of artists – eight per season – so we don’t just sign people because they made one cool track. We watch our artists closely for up to and beyond 6 months, so we know that every track they make will be great. We also run in seasons, so at the start of a season we have a double vinyl called the “Lovebox” VA, which showcases a track from each of our artists, then in turn they get to expand on that initial track with an EP of their own until we are ready to rinse and repeat with the next VA.

What was the initial planning process behind the label like? Did you have a plan of how you wanted to sound? We spent a lot of time ensuring the branding of the label matched our ethos, which took around 2 to 3 months, and feel we nailed that side of things. We never planned a “sound” for our label apart from it being house music in any shape or form that we absolutely adored.

Are there any other labels really inspired or motivate you? There’s so many great labels, but I wouldn’t say any really inspired us or motivated us. This project was born out of our own love and commitment to a scene. There are of course labels that we admire and respect – SlapFunk records being one of them – but yeah, none that we wanted to emulate.

Is the format and visual identity of the label important to you? Tell us about the thinking behind that. The visual identity wasn’t the be all and end all for us, but it was something we wanted to do right. We wanted people to connect our logo with something of quality. The same was true of other solid house labels. All you needed to do was see the label and it was in the pile to buy. So we ensured our records were 180g, inner sleeves, spined sleeves... Just really exactly how a record should be packaged and made.

The thinking behind the Music Is Love logos was inspired by Keith Haring. In a way, he showed compassion and vibrancy in his painting that really reached out to us. Of course we added our own spin on things and refined that ethos into what we wanted to achieve.

What can you tell us about some of the releases so far?

Well, we’ve had seven releases now, and they were really quite organic. The artists were friends, or friends of friends who we really wanted to get behind and push into the limelight as we fully backed what they were about and what they were creating. We’ve had some fantastic support with every release being re-pressed and topping out the Juno Records charts several times.

What are you looking for in the music you release – is it a certain sound, vibe, bit of kit, or more about the persons who made it?

There is no defined definition to what we release as long as it’s high grade and something we have no second thoughts about, something we completely adore after the first 30 second of hearing it. I think if you look too much into capturing a vibe, you lock down the potential for releasing something that is a break from the norm. So yeah, literally just music we love.

Are you someone who gets involved with the music – asks for edits, changes and the like – before releasing it, or do you put it out as the artists intended t to be originallyYeah, I mean we do offer an opinion of some kind if we think there’s an oversight on someone’s part. This is never a demand, but a mutual respect for the music in front of us and to try and squeeze every ounce of goodness out of it. We do have a very loose hold on this though. If that’s the artist’s true intention, we discuss and look at it on both sides and see how it ends up.

Are relationships with artists important, or is it just about the music? The relationships with the artists are just as important as the music for us. Like I said, we only push people we truly believe in, and have found that the music goes hand in hand with that. We have all of our artists on our MIL artists roster as well to try and push these artists – not just on the release front – but also to try and showcase their DJ and live sets, as that for us is the deal: a full commitment to each and everyone on our roster. There are no stars or favourites, equality equals a stronger bond I think.

You recently started a sub label, right? Why, and how will it differ from the main label? Yeah, we are really excited about the sub label, which is called M.I.L. It gives us the chance to release music with a certain sonic awareness behind it, something that mirrors the bookings for our recently launched residency at Sankeys in Manchester. The first EP is a real mixture of tones and textures, but all tied together by high-grade production values. It’s a side project that fits hand in hand with Music Is Love, and we feel it’s a great extension of our brand.

What have you got coming up that you’re looking forward to? We have got the first release of the sub label – a four tracker by a wicked up and coming producer Colman Buckley, then we have a four track EP form me on Music Is Love. Then after that we have a very special collab EP with Red Bull Studios showcasing one of our favourite artists at the moment. This will have its own artwork and be a complete one-off for us, which is turning out great. Also, along side that we have our residency at Sankeys in March – we have Moodymann, Levon Vincent, Delano Smith, Wbezza and some MIL artists. So as you can imagine I’m counting the days ‘til that party, it will no doubt be absolute madness!!!

Where do you hope the label will be in 5 years time? Honestly, in 5 years, if we are still ploughing away at this, I would like to have spread the brand across the globe, showcasing our parties at our favourite clubs. I would like the agency to well established and trusted, and would like the label to still be doing its thing, but hopefully in a way that we can spread the love to more and more people

Nice one.

Catch Oli and the Music Is Love crew this Friday, March 14 as they play their second party at Sankeys Manchester with Moodymann, Levon Vincent, and Delano Smith.

Boiler Room Pearlers: Dj Tennis

We love Boiler Room Pearlers here at Pulse Radio as it gives us the opportunity to really delve-deep into the plethora of exceptional throw-downs by some of the finest DJ’s/producers/bands behind the hardware. Whether we spotlight something right off the bat from a recorded session in one of the Boiler Rooms around the globe, or go back-in-time showcasing the previous talents they have filed in the vaults, you can be sure, it’s bound to be a pearl.

The next instalment of BRP (Boiler Room Pearlers) we take it to the Boiler Room in Mexico for the Talum Takeover with Dj Tennis. Romano, who is Dj Tennis, bases himself in Berlin where he also shares the label experience and a studio with the innovative deep-electronic duo, Tale of Us, whilst he maintains a strict and very busy itinerary working hard to create a crew of young and inspired musicians like Clockwork and Esperanza, amongst others.

Over and above all of that, there was a time that Tennis insisted that his main focus was still being a promoter and a Booking agent; this was in 2012 already with Dj Tennis being incredibly busy since. He may go by the name Tennis, but he continues to demonstrate that he is in fact, a talented all-rounder. We thoroughly enjoyed the video above. We hope you do to.

Deadmau5 - 'EDM all sounds the same to me'

Recently, Joel Zimmerman, or Deadmau5, surprised many by releasing a minimal techno track under what was to believed an alias on Richie Hawtin's Plus 8. Now, Zimmerman has finally come forward, admitting he was in fact the "skinny white kid" behind "Sunspot" all along, confirming what many already knew. “I was just trying something different,” Deadmau5 said in an interview over the weekend. “I kind of knew that if I put it out under an alias it would be fuckin’ five minutes before people figured out it was me. I mean, EDM all sounds the same to me. But with techno – minimal techno, or heavy techno, or neo-progressive techno – fuck, it’s all techno! Goddamn. You know what I mean? It’s got a kick every 4/4, so everything in that realm I’m cool with [sic].”

Though it's not the first, and will likely not be the last time Joel releases under an alias, saying “Fuck man, some of these things that I did that I put out are hilarious because they have these little cult followings and people who comment, “Oh this is way better than anything Joel could do.’ Funny, that. But whatever, it’s just a bit of side fun, because I always like to produce [sic].”

As you could probably imagine, it’s been a very eventful journey so far for international superstars Thom Jongkind & Idir Makhlaf that is, Blasterjaxx. The duo experienced which was to be one of their many highlights in their relatively young career in early 2013 when they crafted the production of Loud & Proud alongside Billy The Kit. Once heard, it wasn’t long until EDM star Tiësto approached the duo we know as Blasterjaxx to sign the track under his own record label - Musical Freedom.

Mentioned above, is just one of the several career milestones that they have seen to date... But instead of rambling on about it, rather view the mini-film the two had put together spotlighting the special, career changing moments and showcasing their talents that got them through the journey that Blasterjaxx have been on in, 'Our Story till Now - Blasterjaxx Mini Film.

First Look: Pioneer's New Turntable

It's no secret that vinyl has been coming back with a vengeance. Hipsters love it, DJs are rediscovering it, and by and large, vinyl seems to be killing CD sales in the consumer sector (with some big help of the digital market, of course). So it shouldn't be that surprising that a major DJ technology company like Pioneer, who have for years held the industry standard for CDJs, would decide to launch a new DJ turntable. However, that doesn't make it any less exciting. Check out a few images via Gearjunkies.com, below.

Word is they've got a USB port, but that's all the info that seems to be floating around at the moment. More as we get it.

Kyle Brinkmann (Das Kapital) South African National Cleavage Day

$

0

Okay, where do I start without catapulting myself into the antagonistic reply that I have for Tiger Tiger and their nationwide competition they’re running!?

I’ll try to remain the messenger boy in this instance (too late, I know), and lend you in the direction of what Kyle Brinkmann AKA Das Kapital said, and is now doing, and ultimately calling out for as much support as he can get on this issue. Read further.

Kyle wrote:“On the 10th of March 2014, I was on Facebook when a notification came up; showing someone on my friends list was attending a party called “TIGER TIGER BOOBJOB GIVEAWAY”.

Kyle clicked through to the event to see what it was about as this wasn’t the first time he had seen such a party being held by the venues across the country. Kyle goes on to say that the concept of the event is best described by the write-up that Tiger Tiger wrote themselves. Read below.

Tiger Tiger ran the same event last year and yes you guessed it, received a considerable amount of negative feedback, yet, they continue to promote this campaign and have scooped up a sponsorship for the competition from, this time, not the easiest guess considering what they normally stand for – Strawberry Lips.

Kyle wrote:“Last year, this event had a lot of negative feedback online, as you can imagine, but what pushed me over the edge this time around was not only the fact that the franchise did it all again, but this time with the sponsorship of alcohol brand Strawberry Lips – a drink aimed exclusively at a female market.

I don’t feel very comfortable acting as a spokesperson for feminism, but I was outraged at the idea that a PARTY could somehow offer women an opportunity to “better” themselves with surgery, with the endorsement of a brand (Strawberry Lips) that has in the past said to stand for the strength, integrity and artistry of women AS THEY ARE (if their campaigns and prior events are anything to go by).”

Kyle continues to demonstrate his disdain in Tiger Tiger's competition while mentioning how disgusting it is that a nightclub and alcohol brand can support such a cause, let alone run a competition whereby winners of the comp will win the opportunity to get their breast done!?

“National Cleavage Day” is a Wonderbra campaign started in 2002, celebrated in April, described in the Independent Online as “a day for women to realise that their cleavage is something unique and that they should be proud of it,” - Public relations correspondent Anita Meiring.

Kyle carries on and raises a few warranted questions. Read further:

Kyle wrote:“How does a breast augmentation celebrate the uniqueness, or the ability of a woman to be proud of herself? It explicitly implies something to be ashamed of or fix; as if the differences in a woman’s body shapes to others, are not to be valued!?”

Another very, very good question would be:

Kyle wrote:“Why are the two brands using their position to give breast augmentation surgeries to people that, probably do not need them, and that, according to their theme and what it stands for, should be celebrating themselves the way they are?”

Another valid point. Perhaps the brands will be able to answer these questions and perhaps change the focus of the competition to that of a cause that is genuinely for those who truly need it. Sadly, in one way or another you know someone directly or indirectly, that has been affected by breast cancer, so Kyle, and us here at Pulse urge you to get involved what Kyle has kicked off. Read all below:

Kyle wrote:“I’ve also had direct contact with and interest from Noelene Kotschan from The Pink Drive, an organization heavily involved in breast cancer treatment, with special attention paid to their mobile mammography units used for breast cancer screening, education and awareness within underprivileged communities.

In light of this, I have launched The Kyle Brinkmann South African National Cleavage Day Breast Cancers Survivors Project, in partnership with The Pink Drive.

Kyle Brinkmann (Das Kapital) South African National Cleavage Day

Thus far I’ve had just over R20 000 pledged pre-launch, as well as Fiction nightclub in Cape Town offering R2500 and use of the venue for a charity show. All the proceeds of donations and any events we do will go directly towards the costs of reconstructive surgery for those breast cancer survivors without the means – no administrative fees shall be taken.

I shall continue pushing this across the country, so that annually, as this ‘National Cleavage Day’ rolls around, we will be able to provide more such surgeries. This is an issue close to my heart, and my wish is that likeminded people get involved with it. I truly hope both the Tiger Tiger franchise and Strawberry Lips understand where I am coming from, and would really appreciate if they could join in helping people truly in need.”

Get involved. Follow Kyle Brinkmann AKA Das Kapital here for updates:
