Tommy Trash: "What You See Is What You Get"

$

In a musical genre that continues to explosively expand globally, but particularly in the US as of late, Tommy Trash preserves the genuine creativity that separates real artists from crowd pleasers. His boyish zeal and passion for his work provides an incredibly inspirational perception of how anyone can make it if they stick to their guns and love themselves for who they are. In speaking with him directly, you can tell that he can easily be the happiest DJ on the line-up; never taking a thing for granted and always having fun.

I had the chance to sit down with Tommy for a few moments to discuss his upcoming work and releases. I expected a great dialogue, but got much more than expected in terms of an artist’s inspiration as well as self-identity. It’s not often that a music interview can provide such an unbeatable philosophy for living life in general. Tommy is that great, happy go lucky DJ on the block who would be the most approachable down to earth guy, without the added arrogance that usually comes with the success he’s achieved. There’s a lot to learn from this guy, but his amazing creativity in music is the real reason to check him out. Seeing him live is a must, but until then, check out the upcoming 'Inspired' compilation, because it’s the best way to get to know the real Tommy; and trust us, you’ll want to get to know him.

You’re set to release your highly anticipated 'Inspired' compilation in just a few weeks after giving us a glimpse of things to come with your Minimixes. While discussing the different styles you’ve incorporated into the set, can you elaborate on the idea behind the production as a whole? Let me start with the idea of the compilation because I think that’s a really good starting point. Basically I was approached by Ministry of Sound to mix a two-CD compilation. The whole premise behind it was that this one would be tunes that inspired me in the early days of me as a producer and/or DJ. Actually, most of the tracks off the first disc come from a time when I wasn’t DJing, but just a fan in the nightclubs, lining up at the clubs…

Just like one of us, one of the normal people! Yep! Dancing for six hours, then the going home and staying up for three days straight kind of thing. It was just some really good times, and that’s what disc one was all about. Disc two was sort of the aftereffects of all of that. It’s a lot of the music I’ve made in the last couple of years. Not every track from the second disc is a super new track or whatever, but they’re some that I think really resonate with me. They’re songs that I think are a direct link to the past. For example, the Tom Starr remix of Dave Spoon’s “At Night.” Back in the day, I was listening to and DJing the original mix of “At Night.” So for me, the original could have been on disc one, but I obviously did the Tom Starr mix instead because it was like a bridging track between the 2 CDs if you will.

Yeah, it definitely feels like your first disc has a lot of funky and electro influence while CD two seems to be a real echo of what you’re doing now. Yeah, and that’s intention behind it. Of course, in the later part of minimix one though it gets pretty bangin’. It’s not all just funky house.

Oh, without a doubt! It seems like both mixes work perfectly in tandem as a steady crescendo. Yeah, I mean look, I wouldn’t say I tried to build disc one chronologically, but there is definitely some of the super early shit at the start of the disc and some of the later stuff towards the end. It’s definitely not meant to be like the oldest track is the first track. At the end of the day, the mix has to flow and it has to work. Yeah! It was a fucking amazing process to go through, that’s for sure.

We recall in another interview you had that you always wanted to play Coachella as part of a band. Fast forward some years and your career has skyrocketed to the point where you’re a major name at Coachella all on your own. Seeing that path you’ve walked, how have you viewed yourself as a musical artist, regardless of the instruments you’ve used? How do I view myself as an artist? Well, first I think it’s kind of awesome you dug up that thing about me wanting to play Coachella. It’s weird to hear someone say that, but it’s 100 percent true! I don’t know though, I always knew I was going to do music, but I was never sure how I was going to do it. For me, music was the only option I ever had if I was going to have some glimmer of being happy in life, you know? But how do I view myself as an artist? I just, I don’t know! Fuck, you’ve actually got me lost for words!

In some ways, Tommy, that’s the best answer you could have possibly given! Well, to be honest, I don’t really think about it. I mean obviously, sometimes I think about how new music is going to be perceived. As an artist, I know what I don’t want to be perceived as, and there’s a whole list of things, but I just want to be myself. Fuck mate, you’ve stumped me! At the end of the day, I definitely don’t try and be anything for anyone or anything that I’m not. With me, it’s pretty much what you see is what you get.

Well that’s refreshing in this genre, especially! You know, I’m not a carbon copy of anyone else, I’m not trying to model myself or be the new Tiesto or the new Swedish House Mafia or whatever. For me, I am who I am; if you fucking like it good, if you don’t fuck off. That’s the closest answer I have to that question!

That should be applied to life in general wouldn’t you say? Yeah man! I spent so many years trying to be something I wasn’t and making music to please other people for whatever reason, whether it’s insecurities as an artist or whatnot. But over time, over the years, you just realize that’s just all bullshit. You are who you are and you should be proud of it and go out and champion yourself! The minute I did that was when everything started falling into place and that was with “The End.” Pre-“The End,” I was always trying to please the label and I was trying to impress my peers, but that’s all white noise around what is the real thing that should be going. I don’t know, I feel that’s the best way I can explain it.

If you met someone who never knew anything about electronic music, name five artists that you’d strongly suggest them to follow. Woah, well let me have a look at my fucking iTunes. Why are you doing this to me mate?! Hmmm, Vitalic, Armand van Helden, Felix da Housecat, Paul Avery, and Jamie Jones.

After playing all day at The BPM Festival 2014, Richie Hawtin set up shop at a local taco stand with friend Dubfire for a special set that went well into the night. Following two ENTER. gigs at Fusion Beach Club and the Blue Parrot, Hawtin took over El Fogon taqueria, the first time that the small venue had ever hosted an event of this scale. Although the two artists have done several pop-up shows in the past, this was the first time that they did one together.

ENTER.’s video recap showcases both ENTER. gigs earlier in the day as well as the nighttime taco stand takeover. Apparently the two had been dreaming about playing at the taco joint ever since they discovered it years ago. From what we can see in the video, it seems like the surprise performance attracted tons of guests truly taking over the street.

A new Daft Punk tune has appeared on youtube, featuring Jay-Z. Produced by Kanye West, 'Computerized' recalls pyramid era DP.

The previously unreleased track has been a subject of much speculation in the online music community. URB has reported the tune was cut from the groups 2013 effort 'Random Access Memories', while others claim the song was produced around the time of the Tron: Legacy soundtrack.

From Pulse's POV, 'Computerized' is not exactly the Robot Rockers at their finest, but we'll let you guys have the final say.

The 2014 Beatport Awards were announced on Friday, celebrating the year's biggest names in dance music.

The award categories were divided between Beatport editorial staff choices and fan favourites, and as per usual, the differences were stark. Beatport awarded their DJ of the year prize to Nina Kraviz, while track of the year went to Breach's banger 'Jack'. On the flipside, punters named Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike their number one, while also crediting the pair with track of the year for 'Mammoth'.

Much like last week's Oscars, a number of awards were foregone conclusions (case in point, Daft Punk winning Best-Selling Album). Nevertheless, a few surprises managed to sneak their way onto the bill. Australia's very own Flume (aka Harley Edward Streeten), took out the gong for Best New Artist, while Cajmere (formerly Green Velvet) won a lifetime acheivement award.

10 Must Attend Music Conferences

$

If ourfestival bucket listkick-started the planning of an epic trip, then it's time to squeeze some conferences in there too. The conference is where business meets pleasure, and where industry and fans come together for days (and sometimes weeks) of panels, discussions, workshops...and a whole lot of parties and gigs. Here, in no particular order, are ten of the best to get stuck into this year.

 photo WMC_zps2d98e436.jpg

1. Winter Music Conference [Miami, USA]
As someone who lived in Miami for three years, Winter Music Conference is ten days of the most chaotic heaven one can imagine. Each year, at the end of March, thousands of artists, music industry delegates and dance music enthusiasts flock to the sunny city of Miami to attend many of the 500+ events, parties, seminars and workshops. With annual parties like Get Lost, Paradise, Last Resort, and more, there is literally always something to do, somewhere to go and someone to see, and the entire city is buzzing with an energy that is infectious. One of the best things about WMC is that you don’t need a pass to attend. Tickets to events are sold independently which makes it easier to pick and choose which to attend. Time management is very important! WMC is in its 29th consecutive year and is happening from March 21st to March 30th. [Sonali Sen Sharma]

2. Rio Music Conference [Brazil]
Born in 2009, Rio Music Conference has quickly become the largest gathering for electronic music and entertainment in the Southern Hemisphere. It has grown to include five regional gatherings in addition to its annual national edition. At just over two weeks in length, Rio Music Conference’s main edition consists of countless day and night events including panels, showcases, and workshops, and is followed by the festival portion held during Carnivale. This year the festival featured performances by international artists such as Armin van Buuren, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Fatboy Slim, and Marco Carola as well as a selection of talented local artists. 3. London Electronic Music Event (LEME) [England]
LEME is the UK’s premier annual electronic music conference, featuring over 30 production workshops, industry panel discussions, artist keynotes, networking sessions and live performances. Now in it’s 3rd year, LEME returns again with a powerhouse of artists and speakers, including Theo Parish and Red D (FCL), in-studio production workshops, and master classes on topics including bigger bass lines, compression and acoustics in the home studio, as well as industry panels like “What Is 'Underground' And Does It Matter?”, "The Art Of Sampling," and "Role Of The Record Label Today,” and of course, after parties around the city. LEME is the perfect place to step up your game as an aspiring artist, network, and hear from some of the best minds in the industry today. 4. IMS Ibiza [Spain]
Now in its 7th year, IMS Ibiza is regarded as one of the most important music industry gatherings in the world, officially signaling the start to the Ibiza season. During the day there are keynote presentations and seminars from key players in the industry on a wide array of subjects, as well as conversations with musical giants like Nile Rodgers. Hosted by the one and only Pete Tong, and founded by figureheads Ben Turner, Danny Whittle and Mark Netto, IMS offers even the most experienced industry heads the chance to share ideas with their peers, elders and the next generation. But the cherry on top is the Grand Finale, taking place at the Unesco World Heritage Site of Dalt Vila, with artists like Sven Vath, Maya Jane Coles, and Seth Troxler rocking thousands. Plus, it’s in sunny Ibiza - can’t be beat. More info at www.internationalmusicsummit.com/ibiza [Chandler Shortlidge]

5. IMS Engage [Los Angeles, USA]
The popular Ibiza conference gave birth to a younger sister last year, with IMS Engage kicking off for the first time at Hollywood's W Hotel. And boy did it kick off. Along with a star-studded list of guest speakers in the form of Skrillex, Diplo, Pete Tong, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, and Beatport CEO Matthew Adell, there was even the kind of action no one could have expected when a fist fight broke out between DJ BL3ND's and Diplo's managers. The rooftop pool drinks weren't bad either. If you wanna see first hand what goes down at this year's IMS Engage on April 16, then you better grab yourself a pass. [Henry Johnstone]

6. Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) [Netherlands]
This Amsterdam festival is the place for the industry to round off the year, but it’s much more than a music conference. The uber-professional city-wide five dayer is a raver’s paradise: almost every club in the city is in on the action, with line-ups that would put London, Berlin and Paris to shame happening twenty times a night, in venues as diverse as a gasworks (Gashouder) and an old newspaper mill (Trouw), right down to intimate canal-front bars and stadiums. The daytime is for checking out new technology and visiting panels and seminars with A-listers, with an equal amount of learning and networking rounding things off. No one loves their clubbing more than the Dutch, and few cities host it better: ADE is the epitome of this. More info at www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl [Guy Hornsby]

7. EDMbiz [Las Vegas, USA]
For two years now, EDMbiz has brought together some of the best and brightest minds in the electronic music industry to Las Vegas for three days of panels, workshops, and keynote addresses. Spearheaded by Insomniac Events, the music conference takes place annually during EDC Week, which culminates with Insomniac’s flagship festival, Electric Daisy Carnival. Last year alone, industry executives from CAA, Beatport, SIRIUSXM, SFX Entertainment, and more as well as artists like Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Steve Angello, and Above & Beyond gathered for inspiring conversations relevant to today’s electronic music scene. In addition to the daytime events, attendees are able to experience Las Vegas nightlife at its best. The 2014 edition of EDMbiz is set to take place from June 17th to June 19 at The Cosmopolitan Hotel of Las Vegas. [Liz Mallalieu]

8. Brighton Music Conference (BMC)
[England]
Though the BMC is only in its first year, the buzz around this event couldn’t be stronger, standing out as one of the more educational conferences of today, with 60 workshops, panels and talks covering all you need to know to be successful in the industry. Discussions throughout will touch on topics like "The Future of Artist – Fan Connections," "New Revenue Streams," and "The Current State of Electronic Music - What’s Coming Next," with guests speakers from Beatport, Spotify, Spinnin’ Records, and artists like Eats Everything and Dave Clarke, as well as artists like Skream, AND.ID, Dave Clarke, DJ Pierre, DJ Spen, Sebo K, Mat Playford, Psycatron, and Dave Seaman performing in clubs and venues around the city by night. The first annual BMC takes place from April 11-12. More info at www.brightonmusicconference.co.uk. [Chandler Shortlidge]

 photo EMC_zps69089a69.jpg

9. Electronic Music Conference (EMC)
[Sydney, Australia]
Australia finally got its very own conference for electronic and dance music in 2012, the aptly titled Electronic Music Conference. The Sydney based event quickly outgrew its humble beginnings, last year upgrading to the impressive Carriageworks venue for three days of keynotes, panels, production masterclasses and discussion forums. Falling in early December, EMC coincides with the mammoth Stereosonic festival, which means some of the biggest names in EDM rub shoulders with Australia's best local talent, making for a must-attend event for fans and industry heads alike. And the cherry-on-top kicker? Throughout EMC week, Sydney comes to life in a flurry of club nights and parties hosted throughout the city (here's just a taste of what was on offer in 2013). [Henry Johnstone]

 photo SXSW_zps7e89f01d.jpg

10. South By Southwest (SXSW) [Austin, USA]
Since it's inception in 1989, SXSW has continued to grow in size every year and is now the biggest event of its kind in the world. A music, film and interactive festival all rolled into one, SXSW is nine consecutive days of panels, films, workshops and of course live music performances from 2,200 official performers and bands playing in more than 100 venues across the city. This year's edition is already in full swing, though if you're thinking of heading to Texas for see what it's all about, there's still plenty of time left to catch an abundance of shows. Here's our picks for this year. [Pulse HQ]

We Celebrate for Pioneer of House Music in SA: Black Coffee

If one heard a clamour and ululating emanating from the eastern provinces of South Africa, Kwazula Natal and the Eastern Cape, announcing the recognition of a cultural phenomenon…and their role in the development of this cultural phenomenon…one could not argue were that clamour and ululating to be in respect of one…that is the soul, spirit, talent and vision of Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, one who most know as “Black Coffee”.

Over past five years, Soulistic Music under Black Coffee’s leadership has built a worldwide network of exclusive track licenses, tours and agents giving Black Coffee and other Soulistic Music artists their real break into the international touring market where they have become regular features in cities from Sydney to New York, Sao Paulo to Luanda and Los Angeles to Athens. I’m quite sure I speak for the rest of the House Nation as well, when I say – Happy birthday Nathi, Black Coffee, the name that is indeed paving the way in this industry and opening up opportunities for the rest of South African artists. Below, a message from Coffee's label - Soulistic Music.

There is no question that from family, to community, to clan, to culture, to country, to the world…all are blessed by the productivity of such great creative genius as is Black Coffee. On Black Coffee’s birthday, let’s enjoy the collaboration he did with Hugh Masikela aptly named ‘We Are One’ above, also, some shots taken over the past year that marked some special moments for both Black Coffee himself, and our rapidly-growing House Nation here in SA.

Krewella Unofficially Announce Second Album

After the success of last album ‘Get Wet’ from Krewella, you couldn’t fault yourself for being of the assumption that the second album is set to be released, soon. Well, it hasn’t been officially announced just yet, but Yasmine from Krewella responded to a fan that asked how the second album was coming along in a Q&A streaming session by saying, it was coming along very well in fact.

Yasmine from Krewella bidding farewell after the streaming Q&A session.

While touring has been fairly quiet, Krewella have been busy in the studio working on what Yasmine says sounds like a rock album!? Yasmine goes on to say “but we won’t forget EDM”. Maybe, these are signs that Krewella are going to be taking us back to the bass-heavier days of their Play EP? Who knows… Perhaps we should wait for the official announcement of the second album before pinning them on rock albums due to come out, in the near future. We’ll keep you posted, though. In the meantime, watch their latest video release below for ‘Enjoy The Ride’. The same  that Armin Van Buuren is set to remix.

Umbrella Stereo System Redefines Personal Sound

While we can't necessarily see ourselves walking to the park with this, we're positive the ::vtol:: "anywhere," designed by Dmitry Morozov, could have some pretty cool real world applications. Imagine having several of these sprouted above the chill-out area of your favourite festival this summer, for example. Described as a "pseudo multichannel personal autonomous sound installation with 10 panning spots," the umbrella has 10 speakers, optical relays, and a micro SD WAV player. While it's tough to tell how good the audio quality is from the video, especially from inside of the large room the demonstration is filmed in, the directionality of the system probably means it would at least provide for an interesting experience if used properly. Check out the video here.

Exclusive Premiere: Unit7’s ‘Give It Up’

London based Unit7 offer up their first release of 2014 with the striking house tune "Down/Gave It Up" EP, and for the first time, debut "Gave It Up" to the world. Listen here.

Having already been confirmed to play both Horizons Festival and the Bugged Out Weekender on March 9th, Mark and Luke, better known as Unit 7, look to have a solid year ahead of them, and their first EP of 2014 most certainly showcases why. Released on their own WRHS Music, a nod to the warehouse rave days of yesteryear, the duo feel a nostalgia towards the early, more carefree days of raving like many of us. However, unlike the average punter among us, their warm, rich, melodies combined with metallic house and techno - a special wink to the sonic textures of the illegal venues of days past - are something special, containing that little "it" you can't quite put your finger on, knowing only that it works. Nostalgia seems to work in similarly mysterious ways.

Unit7's "Down/Gave It Up" EP will be released on WRHS Music March 17th on Beatport, and everywhere else March 31st.

Behind The Qube With Chris Moon

$

Inspired to launch a club in West London, Troupe's Chris Moon set out with a specific vision. One that, at first glance, might appear slightly elitist. That vision was to bring to an area, which is becoming more passionate and informed about electronic music, a club that would focus not only on the music, but the people who came, and the experience they had once inside.

"We love our grotty Troupe warehouse parties around the country, but we miss the club culture, and we wanted to set this straight," Chris said of The Qube Project. "We wanted to prove a club in London can be underground, forward thinking and attract the right demographic. Bring back more than just a dark room with water dropping from the ceiling, brightened up by 10 top DJs in a night. Qube is about something more pleasing to the aesthetics of sound, taste and sight with great production, a focus on a single extended headliner and lots of added surprises which can only be seen when you enter the Qube." So we caught up with Moon ahead of this Friday's fiesta with none other than Derrick Carter to find out more about how he intends to set things straight in West London, who the 'right demographic' is, and how The Qube Project is going to bring the grotty warehouse to the lush surroundings this party offers.

Why create such an exclusive clubbing environment with Qube? Did you feel there was a niche to be filled, or something that was otherwise lacking in the London clubbing scene? I think London is a fantastic diverse city. Qube was a gap that needed filling, but for me most of the other gaps are filled exceptionally from smaller nice clubs like Corsica Studios to incredible Warehouse spaces like Great Suffolk Street. Qube isn't about being elitist, it is about ensuring people leave having had the best experience possible.

The website mentions a pop up experience. Will there be food or some sort of a restaurant experience at Qube? If so, what can we expect? The pop up experience is similar to that of a pop up restaurant, but involves no food other than the odd olive in a Martini. The value is that we are a project, and one that is movable with trends and locations. For example, this summer we headed outdoors for 4 large, outdoor day parties. We want our customers to be guessing, "What next?"

When you say you want to attract 'the right demographic,' who or what types of people do you mean, and why? The beauty of the party is created by the experience as a whole, and those who make it a party. Without our friends and customers, we are nothing. People from the performers, DJs, members and guests make this the experience we hoped for. The people who makeup a party are so important, and I feel this is something they ensure in Berlin, but not in London, as it has been so much about big lineups in big spaces recently.

Will there be a door policy at Qube? I don't have a definitive answer to this question. I feel that Qube is best described as ‘our house.’ A place our guests and we want to feel comfortable and on top of the world around likeminded people. We welcome people to join that movement.

It looks like you’ve had Nick Curly for the soft opening, and then Martin Buttrich for the official opening. From there it's on to more upbeat house acts with The Other Tribe, Klingande and Bakermat for the next few weeks. What will be behind the music policy at Qube? We wanted to set a vibe with those headliners, and they are two talents we respect and are at the top of their game. We wanted to educate some of our new customers and this has been very well received. Our policy is to go darker with the music from 3 a.m., and that theme will remain on all weeks. Past week two in the main room, the darker, less vocal music will be served by our talented residents from Squa, Senseo, Sharkbait, Cici, Troupe, Deelux Audio amongst others.

How do you hope Qube might change the London/West London clubbing landscape in the coming year? The west London catchment is certainly one that is evolving, and we want to be at the forefront of that. We want to be the first point of call for our catchment to be able to see, hear and experience the best in new music. I think, as a community, we can make something very special, as everyone shares their tastes and interests.

Can you let us in any big surprises or acts you might have planned down the road with Qube? Bakermat, Derrick Carter and Klingade are all getting super hype. In series two, I'm excited to see Friendly Fires and Horse Meat Disco, with other notable headliners including Wankelmut and Kolombo. I also love the new UK tech house sound our residents are bringing through.

The Qube Project runs every Friday. For full event listings and tickets, head to The Qube Project's Facebook page.

Sleight of Hands
'Sometimes'
[Smoke N' Mirrors]

It's now officially spring, which means we're that much closer to summer, and to get us ready for all those outdoor festivities, Sleight of Hands has released an EP that is two parts sunshine, and two parts deep house funk. It's a winning combo if I've ever heard of one, and maybe it's just my own personal desire to get the winter weather behind us, but this three track offering couldn't have come at a more appropriate time. First on the line-up is "Sometimes" and it's the perfect way to get both the tone of the project set, and the listener in the right mood. It sounds like your standard house composition, but the vocals add a unique bent, and the whole vibe is perfect for kicking back and enjoying the synth keys as they roll past your ears.

The Psychemagik Remix of "Sometimes" does everything a good remix should, and stays well away from the safe and boring interpretations a lot of other producers stick to to make sure they don't alienate anybody. Don't be mistaken, this isn't your average dance-pop rework. The way it's structured lends to a much harder hitting song, and the smooth bass lines in the original gave been transformed into something much more imposing. It grabs your attention from the start, and when it really hits its stride mid-run time you are already completely encased in the beat.

"Seal The Deal" brings everything back down to a more metered pace, but don't for a second think Sleight of Hands is going to let Psychemagik show them up. Where "Sometimes" was more reserved, "Seal The Deal" opens up, and the muted, fuzzed out, bass lines that contrast perfectly with the crisp vocals keep everything as big as possible. This lyrics are sung with a certain amount of soul and jazz influence woven in, and Sleight of Hands exploits that to the fullest, crafting a sound that works around that style while still riffing off the funky sound clips that make this so fun to listen to. Truth be told, this probably shouldn't just be labeled as "summer music" (it's far too versatile to be limited to one season) but if this EP doesn't make it into your summer set or playlist, then you should probably be reevaluating your taste in music.

He once hit a kid in a wheelchair right in the face with cake from about 20 meters away - and it was the best moment of the kid's life. If that's doesn't scream party animal, we don't know what does. And now, the world's loudest, brashest and most in your face electro DJ is headed to Pacha Ibiza for his first ever residency at the club with Aoki's Playhouse.

Starting Wednesday, May 28, Aoki will begin an 18 date marathon of pure party proportions, only missing two dates on June 25 and August 13 - though word has it he'll be bringing in some special guests to helm the Playhouse for those evenings. No word on lineup yet, but expect many top tier and up and coming artists from his Dim Mak label to bring the bang-bang.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be part of the Pacha weekly crew... roll on the summer and get ready to get messy.” - Steve Aoki
