Fresh Blood: Kresy

Pulse: Which artists or DJs influenced you growing up? Kresy: Even if it's not obvious, I was influenced greatly by early Kevin Saunderson tracks. When I sit down to make music I usually look more to the past.

When did you first begin making music? Were you a DJ before you began producing? 2001 more or less. I began DJing and making music at the same time. I guess I really started when I was 15 and I was recording cassette compilations for my friends.

Your music is very moody and emotive, yet functional for a dancefloor. Are you always looking to please both the mind and feet in your tracks? When I make music I'm interested in doing sonic landscapes, creating mental images associated to the titles of the tracks. I want the tracks to be playable. A lot of dance music to me lacks emotion.

 photo FreshBloodKresy_zps8a047d3b.jpg

What’s coming up from you production wise this year? I have a few things in sight; a split summery deep house thing with Retrofit, a reference in More Music, a couple of remixes and some other tracks in V/A. I'm also finishing an 80s type of house EP for Hivern and trying to push my own label, Discomaths.

And what about gigs? Where will you be playing in the next few months? A few things out there at the moment, I'm also getting a live set ready for some Hivern parties.

Can you tell us a little bit about your Fresh Blood mix for us? How did you decide to approach it? I chose tracks I could DJ and that are reminiscent to the Freerange EP I released. I did a couple of try outs and then I recoded it. The result is a refreshing summer mix with a lot of filtered disco and some deep house sparkles here and there. I played some new and old tracks, they perfectly worked with each other. I was trying to search for a balance between a nice session you could listen to at home or in the car, and a club session.

Seekae Announce Album Title Plus Upcoming Single

Sydney electronic trio Seekae have been hard at it over the past 12 months. Following the success of debut record ‘The Sound of Trees Falling on People’ and follow-up ‘+Dome’, the boys headed back to the studio to start work on their third long-player. Seekae created brand new buzz by way of last year’s heart-softening single ‘Another’. This delectable piece of ambient, downtempo electronica reminded everyone of just how talented these lads are.

And the news only gets better, with the band having just announced the title of their next release. As reported in the Herald Sun, ‘The Worry’ is due out in mid to late 2014, and if ‘Another’ is anything to go by, its sure to be a memorable one. To keep us hankering for more, the band have promised a follow-up single in the next few months by the name ‘Test and Recognise’. Stay tuned.

Before the album’s release, the boys have a couple of festival slots to fill. Seekae will be blowing minds at this weekend’s Golden Plains festival in Victoria, followed by a no-biggie performance at South by Southwest in Texas. The Sydney trio will be part of a healthy Aussie contingent, headed by Chet Faker, with Panama, Touch Sensitive, Trippy Turtle and Wave Racer also along for the ride. The bands will play as part of a two night showcase, hosted by Sydney label Future Classic at The Madison nightclub in downtown Austin. Read more here

While we here at Pulse wish the boys the greatest success abroad, we’re hoping we don’t have to wait too long for a full-length Australian tour for ‘The Worry’. In the meantime, Seekae have re-released their entire back catalogue on vinyl to keep us from going native. The limited edition 3LP super-deluxe collection is out through Future Classic, with some exclusive edits thrown in as locked grooves. Grab it while its hot!

Pharrell Williams Venue Change, Baauer and Nina Las Vegas added to Bill

As you all well know, one of the busiest human beings on the planet is making his way to Australia for the remianing dates of the Future Music Festival tour. Pharrell Williams, aka the guy from The Neptunes, aka the guy from N.E.R.D., aka co-founder of Ice Cream clothing, aka the man behind the three biggest tracks of 2013, aka best mate of Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake aka Sk8brd P (you get the picture), will be headlining FMF in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide - fresh from having just rocked the socks off Hollywood’s biggest names at the Oscars. Seriously, does the dude ever sleep?

Considering this extensive repertoire, it should come as no surprise that Williams has been forced to change the venue of his upcoming Brisbane show due to popular demand. The gig, previously scheduled for The Marquee at RNA Showgrounds will be moved to the larger capaicty Riverstage. In reality, there is probably no venue big enough to house Pharrell’s fan base, but the good folks at Riverstage are gunna try. Godspeed sirs.   Baauer and Nina Las Vegas have been added as supports for the Brisbane show.  Tour Dates:
12.3.14 - Riverstage, Brisbane

Your Miami Music Week Guide

$

0

With Winter Music Conference, Miami Music Week and Ultra just around the corner, many of you will be flocking to Dade County very soon. As a former Miami local, I am excited to head back to familiar territory. Parties will be had, shapes will be thrown and some serious fucking dancing will go down but between all the parties and adventures, you will most definitely need to refuel and regroup (pace yourselves, people). We’ve put together a little guide, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the city, to make your lives a little easier. From food to hotels to parties, we’ve mapped out some highlights. Obviously, there are loads of other restaurants to try, events to attend, etc. and this is not a comprehensive list, but for the sake of time, here are a few of our top picks:

FOOD:

Versailles (early dinner)
A local favorite located on the infamous Calle Ocho (8th Street), Versailles is where you go for some authentic Cuban food. It’s cheap, it’s delicious and it’s necessary. The paella and oxtail stew are amazing. However, if you are looking for a quick meal, this is not the place to go. Head here early for a solid dinner with your crew. Note: there is also a small stand located in Miami International Airport – stop by and grab an empanada, if you have time.

Le Sandwicherie (late-night)
Most definitely a late-night spot, Le Sandwicherie is where you go when you’re starving and need some fucking food. The sandwiches pretty huge and are served on crispy baguettes. Pour some of the special sauce on there and you’re good to go. I’ve actually seen people squirt this sauce directly from the container into their mouths – not recommended. Not sanitary. With a variety of toppings like Camembert, pate, prosciutto and a number of croquet monsieur masterpieces, this spot will definitely satisfy your cravings. Check out the menu and locations here.

OTC (brunch)
OTC is the ideal brunch spot for small to medium-sized groups (for larger groups, try Big Pink on Ocean Drive). $20 buys you (strong) bottomless mimosas and dishes like mac n’ cheese & meatballs, truffle fries, Thai chicken wings and steak and eggs will keep you going strong well into the evening. Located in Brickell, this place is closer to parties at venues like Ice Palace West and and Space.

Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill (happy hour > dinner)
This is my go-to happy hour spot. The drinks are as delicious as the bacon-wrapped dates and the transition into dinner is seamless. It is definitely a sit-down-and-take-your-time place. If you like spice in your cocktails, order the Spice of Love. The Strawberry Balsamic is also an exceptionally delicious mix. Sugarcane is a pretty popular spot so I suggest you arrive on the earlier side and, most importantly, be thirsty.

Joe’s Take Away (Joe’s Stone Crab)
Joe’s Take Away is the famous seafood chain’s answer to delicious and fresh food on the go. The Stone Crab claws are equally, if not more delicious because you didn’t have to make a reservation or look presentable to get them. Located next door to the main restaurant on Washington Ave., stop by on your way home from the beach or order in if you’re too hungover to move.

Yardbird - Southern Table & Bar (Get Classy)
Yardbird is the classiest restaurant on this list. If you’re in the mood to be presentable, this is the place to go and eat delicious Southern food in South Beach. Maybe you want to wine and dine that dime you met at that party the other day (doubtful, but never say never) or you’re taking someone special out for a nice date before embarking that evening’s adventures (more likely), one thing is for sure: you will leave satisfied. Reservations highly recommended.

PARTIES:

Get Lost
Year after year, Crosstown Rebels Get Lost tops our list of must-attend MMW parties. For the first time ever, the party is running for a full 24 hours. We’re always trying to get weird and Get Lost is our cup of tea. Entering its ninth year, Get Lost has earned its reputation as a cornerstone event of the week. A party that kicks off with an opening set from Sasha at 5am needs little introduction. Check out our preview for more details.

Loco Dice b2b Marco Carola at Space
Most of you will be landing in Miami just in time to catch the two kings of techno have it out on the infamous Space terrace on March 26th. Need we say more? We know we’ll be getting there in time to catch the sunrise. Last year, Marco and Dice, who’s known for his record-breaking marathon sets on the Space terrace, played well into the next afternoon. Purchase tickets here.

Sheik ‘N’ Beik Vs. Out-Er WMC
NYC’s underground party group is heading down south for some warmer climates and great music. Featuring sounds by Shonky, Anthea, Valentino Kanzyani and Holosound, this party is taking place on March 26th at TSL Lounge, an awesome little spot in Miami’s Design District. Give Holosound’s set from Robot Heart at Burning Man last year a listen. Check out the Facebook event page for details.

Nick Curly Presents Trust
Nick Curly has teamed up with Air London to present the first Miami edition of their Trust series. To celebrate the launch of this new party project, Curly allowed users to download his new track, ‘Trust’, for free via SoundCloud last month. With tunes from artists like Shaun Reeves, Subb-an, Kevin Saunderson and Matt Tolfrey, Trust is off to a strong start. The party is happening on March 26th at the Electric Pickle, another brilliant venue and personal favorite. Click here for more info.

 Paradise Miami
Jamie Jones’ Paradise party has gained legendary status around the globe. Its summer residency at DC 10 in Ibiza this summer was monumentally successful and year after year, Paradise never fails to deliver the goods. Don’t miss sounds by Jamie, Seth Troxler, Guy Gerber, Lee Foss, Eats Everything, Dyed Soundorom and legends alike at Ice Palace West on March 27th. We’re hoping the transition from Space isn't too rough.Get your tickets here.

Last Resort
Last Resort is where you need to be on Sunday, March 30th. The only way to close out your week is with Solomon, Maceo Plex and Dixon in the dreamy multi-room, indoor/outdoor venue, Ice Palace West. Check out the full line-up here. Tickets are already sold out on Resident Advisor so act fast, people!

HOTELS:

The Catalina Hotel + Beach Club
Located in the heart of South Beach on Collins Avenue, The Catalina is as affordable, stylish, comfortable and in the center of all the action. The rooms are equipped with Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattresses; a very important plus as whatever little sleep you may be getting needs to be deep. Not to mention, the hotel’s 1950’s theme is adorable. Check out the rooms and book your trip here.

The Hotel of South Beach
This hotel should be called the Hidden Gem of South Beach. Discovered as an after party destination one morning, the suites are quaint, charming and reasonably priced. Check out the website here.

The Flamingo
Definitely a fun place to stay, the Flamingo is a huge complex of luxury condos/apartments. Guaranteed lots of space and a great time, check out this website for some great last minute deals.

The Betsy
The Betsy is a gorgeous, classically designed hotel that opened in 1942. It is located on Ocean Drive so you are guaranteed some beautiful views and ideal people-watching. US troops were actually stationed here during WWII and an old-school charm exudes from every corner. It’s a little on the pricey side but you’ll feel like your in the Michael Curtiz film, Casablanca.

The James Hotel
Voted the “Hottest New Beach Hotel” by Travel + Leisure, the James Hotel in Miami offers comfortable, tasteful and luxurious guestrooms, studios and apartments. Catch, James Club and SL nightclub are all located less than one minute (walking distance) from the hotel so you don’t far for good food, a decent drink and some dancing. Although it’s on the pricier side, one look at the rooms and you’ll know it’s worth it.

The Rise of Electronic Dance Music in South Africa

South Africa is a massive producer, and consumer of house music and on a rapid rise. It hasn't been difficult the last years to notice just how much attention South Africa has been getting in the electronic music industry. Look at the vast amount of artists that span across the charts on the genre front, even world events making South Africa a recognisable stop on the party calendar of the world.

Ultra South Africa having just pulled off the biggest electronic music event on the African continent, officially, and the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival making an invaluable imprint in the electronic dance scene and culture, yet again, simply reiterates the focus of the clip dubbed ‘The Rise of Electronic Dance Music in South Africa.

It features Shaun Duvet (Partner at Ultra South Africa/Electric/COCO) and Duncan Ringrose (CTEMF) in interview discussing the difficulties in making the industry sustainable, among other topics. Watch the vid above. Courtesy of CNBCAfrica.com.

LSD Back In Therapeutic Spotlight After 40 Years

LSD has been used in a controlled clinical trial approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the first time in more than 40 years, according to The LA Times. The psychoactive drug was used in combination with therapy to study the anti-anxiety effects on on patients facing life-threatening illnesses, where were considerable and constant, as well as free from troubling side effects.

According to the report, "12 patients suffering deep anxiety due to serious illnesses participated in several drug-free psychotherapy sessions, and then joined a pair of therapists for two full-day psychotherapy sessions, separated by two to three weeks, under the influence of LSD."

Patients were either given a placebo, a small dose, or full dose of LSD, and those who received the full dose "experienced measurable and lasting improvements in their 'state' and “trait” anxiety scores," far beyond those who received either the placebo or small dose.

In the '60s, LSD-aided psychotherapy was widely practiced in the US until 1966, but became illegal with the increase of recreational use, ending all US research on the drug's possible benefits on mental health.

MDMA has also been the subject of clinical trials regarding mental health, recently, specifically for patients suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

Diplo Did Kenya!

Diplo made his first trip to Nairobi on February 7, courtesy of the city’s professional event and photography service, Kenya Nights. In the week prior to the event all the advance tickets were sold out, it was at that stage when the event organizers said Nairobi won’t ever be the same again. They turned out to be right—the Westlands Tree House Club became so cramped they ended the night early when the floor started falling-apart.

When the doors first opened, Diplo worked non-stop until the nightclub called it quits. Staffers moved people away so the floor wouldn’t sink any further. Diplo said, “[tonight was] literally one of the craziest parties I ever did. We had to shut down my set ‘cause the floor was about to collapse.” While suddenly interrupted, it became clear, hosting Diplo would be one of Nairobi’s biggest entertainment events in 2014.

Diplo succeeds by swinging between different tempos, tones, and rhythms to keep the night interesting. Between funk rhythms and even sampling the Ghost Busters’ theme song, the only drawback to his performance was the limited space to dance.

Last year after Daft Punk released Random Access Memories the robotic duo told Rolling Stone Magazine hat modern electronic dance music is like “an audio energy drink.” Sure, it can be repetitive, aggressive, and over-stimulating like it’s over-compensating for real substance. However, every so often there’s a curious artist who borrows from the old to create something new.

By blending Brazil’s favela funk, Jamaican reggae, and American hip hop, the Mississippi-born Wesley Pentz first gained recognition outside of the Philadelphia DJ scene when The New York Times’ rated his mixtape Never Scared as a top ten album of 2003. Better known as Diplo, this inquisitive artist splits his time between touring, running his label Mad Decent while recording new tracks when he finds time.

While declared as the Grammy’s Producer of the Year in 2013, in the past decade Diplo produced what has already been cemented in music history as classics, from M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” to Beyoncé’s “Run the World.”

As a globetrotter, tastemaker, and general curator cutting edge music, Diplo raises the energy levels of any night—even when the clubs are sinking like a ship.

From Liverpool to London: Top 5 Moments in Circus History

$

0

In the 12 years since its inception, Yousef's circus has become one of the world's most iconic clubbing institutions. Bringing acts like Loco Dice and Davide Squillace to the UK for the first time, hosting the BBC Radio One 500th Essential Mix, winning praise, accolades and awards, and spawning a record label and touring brand, it's Liverpool's hometown hero. At the centre of it all stands Yousef, whose simple ethos of "serious music and fun times" has made him and Circus some of the most well respected and in demand commodities on dance floors around the globe for over a decade, even taking over a second home at Egg London most recently. But it hasn't always been this way, and it hasn't always run perfectly, so we asked Yousef himself to list the top five moments in Circus history.

The one.... that started them all:

Due to musical policy differences, I decided to leave my residency at Cream in Liverpool (which was one of the worlds best known clubs - Creamfields is its co-brand), and for the first wanted to set up my own event with me as resident and co-booker, so the idea of Circus was born. I teamed up with my close friend (and now booker of Warehouse Project, Gobal Gathering, and Lovebox) Richard Mcginnis, and we set to work creating something where people could listen to fresh new music in a safe and fun environment. We set up in "The Masque," and the first night was a success, so we decided to do it monthly. Within the first year we won BBC Radio One Club of the year and I hosted our first Essential Mix at the venue. 12 years on, we are still at the same venue (now called EVAC) and we have been sold out month after month for many years, and have invited all the worlds best and freshest DJs to play for us, always sticking to our underground house and techno ethos, with me as resident along side Lewis Boardman who has been with us since day one, too.

The one... that nearly went wrong:

A few year ago, Circus was asked to host the 500th Essential Mix party for BBC Radio One – our second Essential Mix – which was quite an accolade considering any club in the planet would of done anything for such an honour. Myself, Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Aeroplane, and of course, Pete Tong were all lined up to play. A few days before there was a huge volcanic eruption in Iceland, which knocked out thousands of flights Europe-wide and beyond. The gig was sold out, the BBC were set to broadcast live around the world, the city of Liverpool was beyond hyped for such an event, and at 7 p.m. on the day of the gig, we had no DJs to play... Somehow, by 8pm, 2 hours before we opened, all the DJs managed to land in the UK and all made the gig. It was incredible... As far I understand, we were the only major event not to be affected by the ash cloud that weekend.

The one... where I realised how far we’d come:

I guess the above would certainly qualify, knowing that any club in the world could have been chosen, yet Radio One wanted us to curate the event was pretty mind blowing. I would also say the 1st birthday when we really turned a corner, we seemingly broke free from the shackles of being a city club and became regional, whereby that I mean people began to travel to come to Circus from across the north west of England. Now people come nationwide, which is incredible. Also, setting up my residency as Circus in London was a moment when I felt Circus was on the map.

The one... that got really wild:

The first time Laurent Garnier played for us about 8 years ago happened to be on my birthday. He played for 5 hours in the main theatre, and destroyed the club like no other before him. After his set, he got back on the decks in the tiny Room 3, playing disco to myself and about 40 of my friends. From what I remember, it was magical, and everyone (except Laurent) was completely hammered... We stayed in the club till about 8am and while Laurent played and we all partied, it was one of the greats. Then the after-after party at my house... that’s another story!

The one... that brought us to today:

Myself and Circus now hold a residency in London at Egg, which has been growing steadily for 20 months. I’ve invited DJs like Dan Ghenacia, HotSince82, Nicole Moudaber, Nick Curly, Guti, Paul Ritch, Josh Wink, and many more to play, reaching a crescendo last month with Gorgon City and myself, which was literally a road block, crazy scenes... The next Circus event is a Circus weekend takeover on 14 and 15 March, with myself playing both nights with Laurent Garnier, Steve Lawler, Noir and Darius Syrossian. Again, it’s looking like another killer. I enjoying playing Egg London – the sound and the vibe are excellent, really authentic and a lot like its big brother in Liverpool now.

The Chemical Brothers have been announced as the first act on the 2014 Space Opening Fiesta line up, which will celebrate 25 years since the historic nightclub’s inauguration on Sunday the 25th of May, 2014.

The legendary Brit DJ duo return for round two of opening fiesta duties after being heralded as one of last year's standouts. Though as with every Space opener, you can expect The Chemical Brothers are just the tip of the iceberg, with a slew of international acts still to be announced, last year seeing the likes of Sasha, 2manyDJs, Nic Fanciulli and many more blast off what's traditionally known as the start of the summer party season.

The 2014 fiesta will see the Space car park once again transformed into a cavernous open-air arena, complete a custom built stage and eye-watering lighting and ear-gushing sound installations - a festival-style spectacle solely reserved for the Space opening and closing parties - on top of what is tipped to be a truly awe inspiring line up, as the Space Opening Fiesta promises to be extra special for island residents and visitors, as it marks 25th birthday for the award-winning nightclub.

Tickets to the Space Opening Fiesta are now available through the Space Ibiza website.
