WATCH: Eric Prydz Paints Vegas Black

$

0

Eric Prydz, the Grammy nominated house producer and DJ, is heading to Las Vegas for his first ever residency in the US. The Swedish producer is one of the original breed of jocks to put that country on the dance music map, along with best friends in the Swedish House Mafia. A versatile artist, he has made hits with anthemic hands-in-the-air house as Eric Prydz, stripped back, dark European techno as Cirez D, and melodic, progressive house as Pryda.

In this teaser film for the new party, called "Black Dice," at XS nightclub in the Wynn (beginning March), Prydz talks about his vision for the night. "Vegas is all about glamour and gold," he says, "we want to change things around a bit. Darken things up. I think the sound of the music I produce and play is something that Las Vegas hasn't heard yet."

In 2012 Eric Prydz came back to America for his first US tour in five years, headlining the amphitheater filling IDENTITY tour. At the same time he started his EPIC Radio podcast, and released the album, ‘Eric Prydz presents Pryda’, a collection of key productions under his Pryda guise that many lauded for bridging the gap between commercial and underground dance music. Prydz returned to the US in November for two sold-out Thanksgiving shows at Roseland Ballroom, and capped the year off with a Grammy nomination for his remix of M83’s ‘Midnight City’.

From the official press release:
"As EDM fervor has swept America, many have lost sight of what the role of a DJ in clubland is all about, settling for pre-prepared playlists of what has become top 40 music. ‘Black Dice’ offers a new paradigm for Las Vegas, paired back production with black-out lighting, fog machines and lasers, musical spontaneity beyond sure-fire club hits; it’s about immersion, and surrendering oneself to a DJs journey."

It seems like Vegas is ready to broaden its musical horizons, while maintaining the showmanship that makes it such a popular party destination. The first party will be held at Surrender Nightclub on Feb 9th, followed by XS on March 8th.

Suit-Wearing Bear Runs Amuck in LA

Relax, no children were harmed. The bear in question is Culprit LA's "Cali Bear," a character that first appeared in their music video for Lula Circus'"Theory of Folds." At the start of the film, we see the bear trapped in his miserable office, with a sign declaring, "No Music Allowed." However, a devious message from Culprit LA sets him off, and as Lula Circus' jam starts flying through his speakers, he breaks the shackles of his corporate cell. Honey is consumed, monitors are smashed, and eyeglasses are exchanged for severely cool shades.

In episode two, just released, the newly freed Cali Bear wanders LA to the beat of Adriatique's "Face to Face." He runs through the city, passing cool street art, confused passersby, and adoring groupies along the way. A dance off or two later, and the bear is on his way again, a mysterious figure in an equally strange situation. What will this suit-wearing bear do next? And who is he, exactly? Just some of the questions we want answers to.

Tiesto vs. CNN

$

It's confirmed. DJ Tiesto has elevated beyond the status of mere mortal to join the pantheon of gods. His celebrity merited a special interview by CNN last fall, and it's a revealing look at life as one of the world's biggest DJs. Regularly playing to audiences numbering in the tens of thousands or more across the globe, Tiesto talks about what motivates him, what sets him apart, and what makes him nervous.

He says, "Most of the other DJs are more like producers. I'm a real DJ. I know how to read a crowd. I can play in Hong Kong one night and New York the next, they could be completely different sets but both crowds will be going home happy."

Tiesto goes on to talk about what inspires him: "It's just a lifestyle. You travel around the world, stay in the best hotels, eat at the best restaurants, play at the best parties." In talking about relationships, Tiesto says "all my friends have kids. They show me their report cards, and...I show them my sports car."

Somehow Tiesto, or Tjis, as he's know in the real world, pulls it all off with a cheeky smile and a bit of blushing. Make no mistake, he's dead serious about all of this. With a fanbase bigger than the population of most small countries, the man who calls himself Tiesto seems to be on top of the world. How exactly one draws inspiration from an expensive meal is unclear, aside from the fact that it's great motivation to continue doing what you're doing. For the rest of us, a Whole Foods lunch (a treat, mind you) isn't quite as inspiring so we'll have to look elsewhere.

Audiofly's Circus Flies Into NYC on Saturday

Audiofly's party series, Flying Circus, lands in New York this Saturday, January 26th. The event features an all star lineup including Carl Craig, Audiofly, Matthew Dear, and Radio Slave. On the heels of an amazing New Year's party at Blue Venado in Playa Del Carmen, the Audiofly team bring their energy to the big Apple for an unforgettable experience. The party will take place in both Sullivan Hall and Sullivan Room, with full sound systems on both floors. Presented in conjunction with Verboten, it's sure to be a packed show.

The artists on this bill all share a genre-defying attitude towards music. Carl Craig will be bringing his unique brand of futuristic, Detroit inspired house and techno. Audiofly's own sound sits at the nexus of many genres, so look for a set that traverses sonic territory and mood. Matthew Dear's work is sometimes rock, sometimes techno, and often irresistible. Fresh off an album tour in 2012, he brings a lot of momentum with him into 2013. Finally, there's Matt Edwards aka Radio Slave, whose "sonic schizophrenia" has resulted in many unforgettable edits and originals, including the hotly tipped "Grindhouse" on Saved Records. Support provided by Fixed: JDH and Dave P, and Sr Serge.

Some images from previous Flying Circus events to whet your appetite:

As you can see, whether on the beach or in the club, Flying Circus brings the party. The artists they've chosen for their NY date are all masters of their diverse crafts. See you on the dancefloor!

Swedish duo The Knife are preparing to unveil their long-awaited new album 'Shaking The Habitual' on April 18th and in the lead up will be releasing the first single 'Full Of Fire' next Tuesday 29th January. Though if you're like us here at Pulse HQ and can't wait that long you're in luck - some cheeky devil has recorded the track in full from a junodownload stream (which has now apparently been removed).

Check out the new single below. The quality ain't great, though you still cop the full-force of pounding, paranoid angst the nine-minute electro bomb has to offer.

If this new single hasn't reminded you of how cool The Knife are, then perhaps you need to re-watch Karin Dreijer Andersson's superb awards show antics.

Flume Cops Hate Mail From One Direction Fans

$

In an upcoming interview with The Music Network rising Sydney producer Flume speaks about how he has enjoyed receiving and reading hate mail from livid teenage One Direction fans after he beat the boy band to the top of the Australian iTunes chart last November.

"Making the music was never about getting stats, going Gold, being number this or that, so having all these stats and things is just a big bonus, Flume begins. "I’ve got to admit though, beating One Direction was seriously satisfying – I got a bit of hate mail from young 1D fans saying stuff like, “Who the fuck is Flume”, which was great and I enjoyed every one of their letters."

He then goes on to explain that having teeny bopper fans hear and complain about his music is a good thing for the future of mainstream music.

"I think it’s really cool that young teenagers–14,15 year olds–are choosing to listen to my music. Kids that listen to Justin Bieber and One Direction on repeat have been playing the album, which I think is really awesome and hopefully helps educate a more open-minded generation of kids. I think a lot of young kids these days, if they don’t have an older sibling feeding them interesting new music, then they don’t even get a taste of anything but the mainstream pop."

Flume plays the national Laneway Festival in February.

Laneway Festival 2013 Dates:

01.02.13 - RNA Showgrounds, Brisbane
02.02.13 - Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney
03.02.13 - Footscray Community Arts Centre, Melbourne
08.02.13 - Fowler’s Live and UniSA West Courtyards, Adelaide

Giano - 'This Is House' EP

Giano
This is House’ EP
[Classic Music Company]

As far as arrogant record label names goes you can file the use of Classic only one or two notches down from ‘Look at us we’re fucking awesome’. Which is fortunate really, because they are. Lovingly and memorably featuring a mere 100 releases in its early incarnation, Derrick and Luke revamped the imprint to devastating effect and have been slowly setting about delivering their own personal tastes to the fore once again, be it DLC’s ass wiggling mandate or Luke’s delectable weirdness.

This latest Classic release is 100% stamped with that cast iron Carter jack. ‘This is House’ comes off as a vibrant re-up of Blaze’s epochal ‘Do you remember house?’, gathering samples of Chicago’s forefathers outlining their understanding of how the music sprang up and what it means to them. It would be too wanky for words if it wasn’t oozing with a glorious shuffle, welding some killer chords and a pacey trumpet riff which ensures the energy is fizzing throughout.

Then there’s ‘The Underground’, a bonafide staple of irreverent funk, looping a couple of cheeky Digital Underground rhymes over the fluid and fast grooves that dominates from the off. Shock G’s dulcet tones insist that even though ‘we’re usually on a serious tip, tonight we’re gonna flip and trip’, the result is a beat so infectious you have to be either dead or deaf to not dance. Even being both of them probably won’t stop you.

There’s a nasty dub which rubs things up and gets grittier, with an acid line reverberating underneath the vocals and some metallic sheen towards the end, but it’s not that different and probably only crafted as a DJ tool for Derrick to wreak havoc with. As a whole this is house music as raw and as funky as it can get.

Last Magpie: Musical Pickings

Look out Manchester! A huge hook up is on the horizon as Zutekh and WHP combine for a hell of a party at the beginning of February. Featuring the likes of dOP, Levon Vincent and Jackmaster are all coming to the cavernous space... but also featuring is Losing Suki's Last Magpie, the lo-key producer and DJ that caused a panic  through his 1995 EP last year. In a rare interview, Pulse chatted to the enigmatic producer ahead of Zutekh's takeover of WHP's Victoria Warehouse. Check out his podcast for WHP and read his exclusive interview below. Get on it!

So let’s go back to the beginning - how and when were you first infected with the music bug? With electronic music at 13 when I heard Jungle and Techno music on some cassette tapes a friend had. The mood and energy of the music seamed to just fit. As a kid I loved film scores, especially The Terminator soundtrack, which my dad got me on tape for my sony walkman. I felt this music I had discovered took the elements I liked out of the music and took it somewhere futuristic and far away from the mundane town life I was experiencing at the time.

How would you describe your DJ style to anyone that hasn’t heard you play before? A bit scrappy but always with vibe. I enjoy a lot of sounds so i always try to work my way around them in a set. The flow is still there I believe and in my mind all the tracks work as a set. I feel I have a distinct style which can use skills I learnt mixing hip hop and jungle as well as techno.

You’re from the north of England and currently based in Leeds right? How does the producers and the music scene in the city influence your sound? A lot of them are mates. Its a closed nit scene. Just listening to each other and talking about music influences you.

You have released music on Hypercolour and Losing Suki recently, how did the link with these guys come about? My mate Ste from the label got hold of some tracks after not seeing him in a while. I told him I had some different music to what I had been making and asked if he would have a listen. He listened and they signed… I had no DJ name or an idea of putting it out on what I thought was a house label. But after listening to what they where doing at the time it all fell into place.

Your 1995 EP on Losing Suki has been doing some serious damage and each track sounds distinctly different. What inspires you when you are in the studio and what else is on the horizon with your music which we can look forward to? I'm inspired by a lot of old school stuff still, A lot of the timeless music that still stands out today. I like to make everything sound current and like i say, not stick to a genre too closely. I like tracks that seam to overlap in their influences.

We have seen your name on events with the likes of SBTRKT and Rustie to Paul Woolford, Chez Damier and Pearson Sound – what gig has been your biggest highlight so far? Lots of great gigs recently. Manchester the other week was exiting. A real old warehouse with a great system. Really basic, simple lighting and a crowd of music heads.

You are playing alongside Jackmaster, T.Williams, Krystal Klear, Dinky and dOP to name a few at the Zutekh Warehouse Party in Manchester at The Warehouse Project’s venue, have you heard much about the space and parties there? What can people expect when you play on 2nd Feb? Ill turn up, see what the feel is like and try and make the music fit that. If its a big warehouse space Ill probably play some nice fat house beats with a blend of dark garage to enhance the mood of the space.

Finally, please tell us about your exclusive podcast you have done ahead of the Zutekh event.. Its a selection of early house influences mixed up to where I feel the sound is at now. Theres a few exclusive tracks on there and a couple of new bits from myself.. Enjoy!

VIDEO: Possessed By Dubstep

$

High Rankin, music's answer to Sacha Baron Cohen, has done it again... Following 50 Shades of Bass he presents a new series of sketches beginning with this rather humourous sketch about a young girl possessed by Dubstep. With classic lines like 'minimal techno for example is very easy to excorcise, you just play a little bit of electroclash... things like dubstep are much harder' two vicars attempt to remove the demonic Dubstep from a young girls body.

Although it would be going too far to say that most Dubstep lovers are in fact possessed, when one finds oneself in a cavern, surrounded by people 'moshing' away to Dubstep... it's perhaps understandable as to where this idea stemmed from.

Lee Burridge Waxes Existential with Spybar

In the inner depths of Spybar's subterranean lair, the folks at Chicago's renowned club sat down with the Dreamer for a quick but broad interview. Lee has had a big couple of years, with his label and party series All Day I Dream becoming an international phenomenon, most recently with its own party at BPM. Additionally, he has now started a new label called Get Weird. Despite, or because of, all this positive momentum, Lee has been taking a lot of time off to go to the movies and relax, so that he's "charged for the year." A wise man! The quality of the video might not be cinematic, but it's worth a watch as some of Lee's answers are revealing .

The interviewer covers some pretty existential territory, asking Lee at one point, "Does the internet make people more careful about what they say and do?" With the poise of a modern day sage, Lee answers "I think life should be lived in the moment. It can be dissected later on." Check out the interview below!

In Seth Troxler's calmest interview to date, he talks to OneBeat.TV about a variety of DJ and life related topics. Here are 5 things you'll learn about Seth from watching this video:

1. What he would be if not a DJ/producer (hint, "stripper" is incorrect)

2. His greatest extravagance ("mile high" comes to mind...)

3. His favorite club (besides the math club, of course)

4. His top influences today

5. The night that changed his life

The young man has been on a blistering path to success, reaching Resident Advisor's top spot as DJ of the year in 2012 at the tender age of 26. Last year also saw the release of several productions, including his remix of Matthew Dear's "Fighting is Futile," which made its way to the top of Beatport's Electronica charts. This momentum has already carried over into 2013, with exceptional performances at the BPM festival. It's certain to be a bright year for this quirky and talented musician.

Is Mark Zuckerberg a Closet Raver?

A picture has surfaced from the bowels of the internet showing someone that looks identical to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at an intimate dance party. It's rumored that New York's own DJ Dory (a jockey on the top billing Listed roster) is on the decks. Zuckerberg, or his doppelganger (top left), is drenched in sweat, with an all-too familiar glazed expression on his face. Enhancing the overall awesomeness of this picture is the terrible red-eye from the camera, which makes him seem like some sort of dancing techno demon.

If this isn't Mark, he ought to sue this kid for impersonating him. From the haircut to the clothes, everything bears an exact likeness to the young billionaire. We're not all that surprised. After all, computers form the backbone, and indeed gave birth to, modern techno music. The blips and bleeps of the digital world are in large part responsible for the relevance of electronic music in our lives. But seriously Mark, lay off the E pills ok?

Agnes
Jedi House EP
[Vitalik]

Some names become synonymous with quality output, pushing boundaries and consistently creating fresh and unique sounds for the discerning electronic music lover. Vitalik - the ever-impressive imprint responsible for memorable house excursions from MJC, Alex Jones and Blackhall & Bookless - combine with buzzy scene-mover and technical perfectionist Agnes, resulting in two creative ‘forces’ going beyond the pre-determined template on this stand out EP. ‘Jedi House’s force is strong, yes, thanks to its malleable range of moods and emotions, delivered through the veils of various tempos and styles; the production quality and attention to detail is second to none, and it’s this hallmark that’s become a pre-requisite when talking about this rather skilled producer.

Deep, driving and definitely no shrinking violet, opener ‘Silence and Snow’ delivers murky, bottom heavy and dubbed out rhythms, lurking beneath crisply sequenced beats. Galvanised by weighty, analogue touches and wilting, reflective ambience, it’s a perfect dance-floor asset for those looking to go a few shades deeper into the night. Musically, proceedings become more open - WIDE open, in fact – as his musical palette thickens. ‘Maybe Here Maybe Not’ sees the Swiss native loosening his grip, switching the tempo down into a demonic, boom-bap hip hop pattern, adorned by minor tonal bleeps, shifted vocals and sharp, glassy hi hats - a scintillating surprise after the rolling energy of ‘Silence’, displaying touches of his Cavalier moniker for Drumpoet Community. ‘Boba Fatt’ builds into a dubby, chugging bubbler anchored by liquid, flowing chords, bringing the tone of the EP up further before ‘Ancient Methods’ bravely proves you don’t need a kick drum or puncturing drop to give a groove meaning - tinkling chimes, piano riffs and swollen 808 bass provide all the groove one needs in this dynamic, funky jam.

Continually impressive through a blend of acute production and unique vision, on evidence of Jedi House there’s a lot more goodness to come from Agnes’ seamlessly constructed musical cannon. A great example of when the force is used wisely, my son. Seek and you shall find.
