BPM 2014 Artist Preview: Luca Bacchetti

Italian DJ/producer Luca Bacchetti has had a very busy year. Currently based in Barcelona, he has played in Miami, New York, Athens, Paris, and more in the last month alone.  Now, he's heading to Mexico for two special shows at The BPM Festival - All Day I Dream on January 4th at Mamita's during the daytime and his own ENDLESS + Surface showcase on January 11th at Lost in Playa at night.  We had a chance to catch up with Luca ahead of his journey to Playa del Carmen to chat about why he loves the festival so much, what guests can look forward to at his performances this year, his bond with Lee Burridge and All Day I Dream, and what he has in store for 2014.

In your own experience, what separates the BPM Festival from all the others you've played at? What have been some of your festival highlights from the past? I have to say that the Mexico is one of the countries I love the most, and it was also where I was first called to when I started to play overseas, so the decision to organize BPM in Mexico was a trump card for the organizers who are such a beautiful family. The locations are unique. You want to talk about the food? And then where else in the world can you hang out on the beach in January? The parties and the line ups are the best on the clubbing scene... the vibe is special. What more do you want?

You will be bringing ENDLESS to BPM this year on January 11th for its showcase debut along with Surface. What can guests expect from the party? It’s the first ever ENDLESS showcase. It was my wish to start with BPM which is also the first festival of the year. I’ve known Halo and Hippie for a long time and suggested we join forces together for this event. We will also have Alix Alvarez, Signal Flow, Marasco, and Jon Dadon from Lovelife... an Italian/West Coast mix! Musically it will be very interesting! Lost in Playa is a new club with a serious sound system!

Your remix for Maher Daniel and Joan Charnis'"Lonely Stars In Open Skies" is out on All Day I Dream, and you'll be playing at the ADID BPM showcase on January 4th. How did your friendship with Lee Burridge start? What are you looking forward to most about the event? I have a very special memory relating to Lee. At the beginning I wondered how it was possible to play all around the world like that, he was spinning like a top. I was just starting out and he was already a legend. I learned the meaning of the word globetrotter thanks to him! As fate would have it, soon after, I too became a globetrotter in my own right with him a great supporter of my releases. Not long ago he asked me to do something for the label. In the end, the right opportunity came up; the original song of Maher and Jon conjured up a world with which I knew I could do something special, so I took some time over it. All Day I Dream and ENDLESS have a very similar vision, so I really enjoyed it. It’s a perfect piece for the party, an emotional journey, sensual without giving up the groove! All this support from Dixon, Ame, Art Department really surprised me… so for All Day I Dream at BPM I’m preparing a special set. So excited!

You recently played with our friends at Flying Circus at Sankeys NYC and Treehouse Miami. What were those experiences like? It's always nice to see friends' projects take flight. I started playing with Audiofly at the first Flying Circus six years ago, and now it's great to see that it’s become a consolidated brand. Both dates were exceptional, especially NYC. I really think that this summer Flying Circus had the best line ups in Ibiza.

You've had a busy month playing all across the globe in Miami, Athens, Paris, New York (Sankeys), and more. What have been some of your December touring highlights? Absolutely New York!! It was a great date! Sankeys NYC is dope!! I am very tied to NYC and as usual it did not disappoint!

What producers have been impressing you lately? Will we hear them on Endless? There are many interesting producers in circulation, it’s a really difficult choice. The next release on ENDLESS is from Alix Alvarez and it’s fantastic! Then Marasco, a producer based in Maui, Hawaii, and some other surprises. One day I would see on ENDLESS people like Soulphiction, Ame, Mathew Jonson and H-Foundation of whom I’m a really big fan! I have a never ending list.

What else can we look forward to seeing from you in 2014? With ENDLESS, we are working on the next party to be held during WMC 2014. Regarding my releases, I have many open projects as well as new remixes. There will be a series of releases that I'm very happy about. Over the past two years, the pleasure of being in the studio has increased, leading me to explore new sounds. Apart from all that, I'll see y’all around as usual! Happy New Year to everyone!

A new book on electronic music has recently been published which takes a critical academic look at international DJ culture through a collection of essays from writers from across the globe. Entitled 'DJ Culture in the Mix: Power, Technology, and Social Change in Electronic Dance Music,' the book also has an entire chapter dedicated to the changing landscape of Sydney's club scene over the past decade, penned by Australian academic and Pulse contributor Ed Montano.

In his chapter, 'DJ Culture and the Commercial Club Scene in Sydney,' Montano examines the increasing internationalisation of the city's scene over the past decade through aspects such as the internet, club brands and festivals. Some of Sydney's most famous existing and now defunct clubs such as Home, YU, Chinese Laundry, Tank and Gas feature in Montano's essay, as well as interviews with local DJs like Goodwill, Illya, John Devecchis, and international jocks Carl Cox, Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren.

'DJ Culture in the Mix' was published by editors Bernardo Attias, Anna Gavanas and Hillegonda Rietveld, and you can find out more about the book and how it came to be via a recent interview with the trio. Sound like your cup of tea? You can purchase 'DJ Culture in the Mix'here, plus check out Ed Montano's most recent interview for Pulse with the legendary Danny Tenaglia here.

10 Most Memorable Moments At The Abercrombie

As Sydney prepares to bid farewell to the beloved Abercrombie Hotel and the indelible mark it has left on the scene, we reach out to one of the venue's owners and driving forces, Dane Gorrel, to share with us ten moments that have stood out the most during the hotel's brief but influential run. The Abercrombie's Last Night Ever withDJ Kozehappens this Thursday 9th Jan. Buy ticketshere.

 photo SASH3_zpsc578dd27.jpg

#1 Sydney Dance Party
These were the first ever parties we did outside and we did them until 6am. Charlie O’Brien, Pari Haka and George El Barno were behind them and this was when we first thought we had something special with the venue.

#2 Our first international - Yousef
Yousef was the first international we ever had, it was part of the Sydney Dance Party and it was Rennie Pillay’s (one of the owners) 30th birthday. The place was packed with Yousef holding a solid groove and we had two guys turn up wearing Empire Of The Sun's stolen costumes from Stereosonic.

 photo abercrombie1_zpsdcf33163.jpg

#3 Funktion One sound system
Charlie O’Brien was the first person to get Funktion One into the venue for his Sydney Dance Party event, but it was myself and Rennie Pillay who bought the inside system with our own money and what a difference it made - the sound has been amazing.

#4 Dixon's afternoon set
S.A.S.H played host to RA’s #1 DJ of 2013 for an afternoon set that had the venue at capacity by 4pm. He didn’t disappoint and his set was possibly the best 3 hours of dance music The Abercrombie has ever heard.

 photo Dixonabercrombie_zps194d77d0.jpg

#5 The Flood
Some genius blocked the drain in the DJ box one night in the early days of S.A.S.H and it started to rain. Carlos Zarate played to a packed dance floor full of water with one legendary party goer leaving the venue, returning in his wetsuit and then continuing on dancing.

#6 NYE 2013 with James Holden
One of the best bookings we've had in the hotel's in 2.5 years. James’ set was one of brilliance and kept everyone dancing for the entire of his 3 hour extended set. Really nice guy too!

#7 NYD 2013 party with Luke Slater's Planetary Assault Systems
Strange Fruit, Ben Dunlop & Pete Coyle brought Luke Slater to The Abercrombie on NYD 2013 with around 600 people crammed into the beer garden and the adjoining laneway. The council arrived and commented, “What a great party you have running here”.

 photo lukeslater2_zps88370c29.jpg

#8 S.A.S.H closing party
The last S.A.S.H was always going to be big and it didn’t disappoint. Capacity at 3pm, people dancing on the roof and hanging off the walls...what an amazing journey it has been. Amazing effort Matt Weir and Kerry Wallace - good luck with the new venue. Lets get loose.

#9 Midlife party 2011
Fuzzy brought their Midlife party to The Abercrombie on a Wednesday night with the likes of Digitalism, MSTRKRFT, Gossip, A Trak & Armand Van Helden all coming past for what was a loose night.

#10 Eelke Kleijn's mind-blowing set
Shrug boss Dave Stuart secured an act that I have followed for ten years, so when he called to ask if the venue was free to showcase Eelke Kleijn I was extremely happy. What followed was one of the best sets ever at The Abercrombie with Eelke using the live recording on his podcast series, thus bringing The Abercrombie to the world.

Byron Bay Nightclub La La Land Destroyed By Fire

Byron Bay's long running nightclub La La Land was ravaged by fire on Saturday night leading to the evacuation of 70 people, reports The Australian.

Emergency services were called to the venue at 9:30pm after smoke alarms were sounded, with firefighters evacuating 20 patrons from the upstairs nightclub and 50 residents from a nearby backpackers. No one was injured in the fire though firefighters say 80% of the contents of the nightclub was destroyed along with 25 per cent of the building.

"I saw a bit of smoke coming out. We got everyone out, and it seemed like nothing at first. But it got out of control and then, suddenly, there were 1.5m flames at the back of the building," recalled a staff member to The Australian.

"When the firefighters got here, it got scary and it looked like something out of a movie."

La La Land had only just recently been refurbished.

"It's a tragedy and bad for all concerned," said Paul Waters from Balcony Bar and Restaurant. "They put a lot of effort into renovating it."

The cause of the fire is unknown, with forensic investigators on scene today to prepare a brief for the Coroner due to the amount of damage.

Ebay user chloemccor has an odd and slightly gross item for sale - MK's used and unwashed towel. Though it's a strange offer, at the time of writing, 25 people had already bid on the number one producer's sweaty towel, jacking the price up to over £10,100.00.

According to the Ebay listing's description, not only is the towel used and unwashed, but upon purchase, half the money will go to a charity of MK's choice. According to MK's personal Facebook page, the towel is authentic, though Kinchin himself wasn't aware the bid was going to happen:

So if you're willing to drop over  £10,100.00 on a used towel, head over to the listing here, though you'd better hurry, as bidding runs out later today.

Heineken Claims Armin Van Buuren Can Make You Drink Less

Dutch beer giant Heineken recently set out to prove the impact a better DJ had on club goers. Namely, that with a DJ like Armin Van Buuren (who himself doesn't drink), clubbers are less likely to imbibe than with someone less inspiring.

The video is part of Heineken's Dance More Drink Slow (#DMDS) campaign being launched across the trance DJ's social networks, along with the release of his new single 'Save My Night,' from the remix edition of his album 'Intense,' which is the official music track of Enjoy Heineken Responsibly campaign 2014 – Dance More Drink Slow (#DMDS).

“I think if the music is good, people hit the dance floor and the more they dance, the slower they drink,” Armin said.

While it's nice to see a beer company and the world's top trance DJ promoting safe drinking practices, this ad seems to assume quite a few things, namely that no one showed up to watch Armin Van Buuren with a few pills in their back pocket.

GTA5 - One Game To Rule Them All

It's been a relatively tough few years for some parts of the entertainment industry. In dance music, while there are more festivals and clubs around the world than you can shake a stick at, things like piracy and the mass availability of free music has made a dent in the pockets of record label owners, both small and large alike. Meanwhile, the video game industry is doing better than ever, with Grand Theft Auto 5 becoming the biggest selling entertainment product of 2013.

Within three days of the game's release, it hit $1 billion in global sales, going on to sell 3.7 million copies in the UK alone in 2013, even beating films like Skyfall. A sign of the times, music sales dropped half a percent last year, while video games grew as the entertainment's leading force with a 6.6 percent boost for the year. While it's unlikely that 2014 will see the trend change for video games, one question remains - can the music industry dig itself out of the ever-widening pit they seem to be falling further and further into this year, or will album sales continue to decline?

For the first time, Marco Carola and the Music On crew came to Ibiza superclub Amnesia for an incredible sendoff to what's been a huge 2013 for both Carola and the club. Marco, Jamie Jones,Pan-Pot and more were on hand, ensuring the packed venue rocked well into the next afternoon. For Amnesia regulars, being able to visit the club in December was a welcome treat, and between the devastatingly good music and a slightly more refined and relaxed winter crowd, the night was a resounding success. Music On NYE 2014 Not Likely

$

Although last week's New Year's Eve Music On bash at Amnesia was considered a success, with over 4000 people flocking to the club to catch their favourite Music On artists, the party may not return for another NYE bash in 2014.

Jesus Sierra, press manager for Amnesia, recently told a local Ibiza blog that '"although the party was a success attendance wise, it was conceived as a once off event. There are no plans at present to hold a similar party next New Years Eve." The blog, Ibiza Holiday Secrets, sites logistical and financial costs associated with reopening a nightclub on the scale of Amnesia for one night in the winter as possible causes for the decision. This year's party saw Marco Carola, Jamie Jones, Pan-Pot and more all returning for the one off, essentially turning the club into a summertime-like party for the night, with just about everyone in attendance clubbing right up until the early afternoon. Check out some of the best photos from the 2013 bash here on Pulse Radio.

SFX & Clear Channel Announce Partnership

In its first major move of 2014, EDM giant SFX Entertainment has announced a media partnership with radio company Clear Channel. The extensive marketing and content deal includes three parts: a national DJ/producer contest with Beatport, a weekly Beatport countdown radio show, and a series of live events.

The winner of the DJ/producer contest that is set to air on select Clear Channel stations will appear at Mysteryland USA, taking place over Memorial Day weekend this year on the former Woodstock festival grounds. The weekly Beatport radio show will air on Clear Channel radio stations nationwide. The two companies also have plans to create an electronic music culture event program focused around Halloween 2014.

SFX head Robert F. X. Sillerman explained his motivation for the partnership. “The framework we have established with Clear Channel, whose stations include KIIS-FM and Z100, brings the electronic music category to a broader audience and delivers on what we believe the young music consumer wants today. It also allows us to amplify the promotion of DJ/producers who are the life-blood of our industry.”

John Sykes, Clear Channel’s President of Entertainment Enterprises, states “The demand for electronic music continues to increase across all of our platforms at Clear Channel. This strategic partnership with SFX will give our audiences access to a deeper selection of music content and live events.”

Twitter Beef: deadmau5 & Porter Robinson

deadmau5 claimed that he was handing over control of his Twitter account to his management back in November but few believed that the often controversial Canadian producer would be able to keep away for long. After he regained access in the last month, he found himself in another one of his online arguments, this time with American artist Porter Robinson.

After deadmau5 complained about Mansion’s “VIP bullshit” following a show in Miami, Porter Robinson tweeted about his excitement for his show at Story. The two then engaged in a Twitter battle in which deadmau5 called Porter a “fucking dickhead” and Porter accused deadmau5 of having a “weekly quota on twitter temper tantrums.”

Dillon Francis intervenes at the end suggesting that the two settle their argument over one of deadmau5’s famous Coffee Runs. The conversation has since been removed from Twitter but you can check it all out below.

Our friends at LINK & Miami Rebels are wishing you a happy New Year and, as usual, bringing in some great talent this week. Scissor & Thread co-founder, Anthony Collins, heats things up on Thursday and Turbo Recordings label boss, Tiga, mans the decks on Friday.

Anthony Collins moved to Paris at age 17 and never looked back. The American and French DJ and producer quickly established himself in the house and techno scene, landing a residency at Paris’ Cirque Bonheur in 2011. That same year, he and Francis Harris launched their new label venture, Scissor & Thread, which features releases from newly discovered composers, producers, vocalists and instrumentalists, such as Bob Moses.

Head back to Treehouse on Friday and catch Montreal born DJ and producer, Tiga. Not new to the scene, Tiga and a few friends used to throw raves and small, eclectic parties in Montreal in the early 90s. In 1998, he started Turbo Recordings as an outlet for his personal expressions. The imprint currently boasts releases by artists such as Azari & III, Chromeo, Gesaffelstein and Duke Dumont.

That’s a wrap for this week at Treehouse. Miami’s favorite underground spot is always a home to seasoned professionals so head over and start your year off right!

Photographer Sarah Schönfeld has captured a new and vivid side to illicit chemicals in these stunning photos. In order to get a closer, more intimate look at drugs like heroin, MDMA and ketamine, Schönfeld began with a single piece of film exposed to a dark background. As the film developed, Schönfeld diluted a single drop of each drug in water or alcohol onto the negative. The reaction between the drug and the liquid resulted in the dreamlike images below.

MDMA

Ecstasy and GHB

 Cocaine

Ketamine

“I was trying to give all these substances - which are nowadays pills, powders, liquids - a face, however abstract and distant it might be,” she said. “Letting the substances and photography have an interaction made sense for me because we trust the medium of photography.” The result gives viewers a more clinical approach to each substance, removing the moral and political arguments normally swirling around a topic as polarising as illegal drugs.

Opium

LSD

Heroin

GHB

“My personal inspiration came through different things, which I would call chemical self in action,” she says. “I grew up with a father with schizophrenia who was always on medication and worked for many years in nightclubs surrounded by mind altering substances.”
