Bingo Players’ Maarten Hoogstraten took to Facebook this morning to share some sad news – his partner Paul Bäumer has lost his battle with cancer. Paul told fans back in July that he had been diagnosed with cancer and would be taking a hiatus from performing to seek medical treatment. He remained optimistic and continued produce and run Hysteria Records along with Maarten, who toured as one half of Bingo Players. Unfortunately, Paul passed away last night after “fighting strongly until the end.” All of Bingo Players’ shows for the rest of the year have been cancelled.

SoundCloud Takes Down Ripping Sites

Many have gotten away with ripping audio from SoundCloud for years when it’s not available for download, using one of the many ripping websites out there. It appears that SoundCloud is fighting back against the piracy of its material by asking some of the most popular ripping sites to shut down or at the very least, stop converting SoundCloud URLs into mp3.

Several sites such as Offliberty, SCDownloader, and SoundDrain now either display take down notices claiming that SoundCloud has requested their removal or display error messages when a SoundCloud URL is entered.

After bringing Cocoon to the concrete jungle last weekend, Sankeys is keeping 'em coming with the legendary Tribal Sessions party this Friday and Kerri Chandler on Saturday.

Tribal Sessions is one of the international nightclub's many legendary party nights. Promoters roam the club painting the faces of club patrons until the entire party is adorned with colorful and playful designs. This Friday, catch Timo Maas and Detlef (Live) tearing things up and Let’s Play House presents Curses and Jacques Renault.

DJ and producer, Timo Mass, celebrated his 10th year as a resident at DC10 in Ibiza this year and helped Cocoon commemorate their 100th release. He is the founder of the Rockets & Ponies imprint and has been in the game for a long time. Detlef, aka Alex George, will accompany Timo Maas. Detlef made his debut in February 2010 and was most recently signed to VIVa MUSiC.

Curses is one of the personas of Luca Venezia, also known as Drop The Lime. We had the pleasure of catching up with the Trouble & Bass label boss last month, check out the interview here. Jacques Renault, who produces the Let’s Play House party series with his friend Nik Mercer, will join Curses for an evening of dark basement vibes.

If Friday wasn’t enough for you, head back on Saturday and catch Kerri Chandler, Cem & Rg and Mateo with Autobrennt in the main room. Kerri Chandler has been making music since the early 90s. The Madhouse Records co-founder celebrated the label’s 21st year running in 2012. Catch him at KER Club in Barcelona after his stint in the Big Apple. New York locals Cem & Rg will also be heating things up on Saturday. The duo cut their teeth playing Blkmarket and ReSolute parties and have also played Miami’s Winter Music Conference.

Top 20 Mixes Of 2013

$

0

There's never been a better time than right now for electronic music lovers. Not only is there unlimited access to dozens of respected podcast series, but the advent of technology has paved the way for the streaming and recording of live DJ sets via sites like the all-conquering Boiler Room, providing a plethora of choices for even the most discerning of chinstrokers. Alongside these newer forms, it's also heartening to see technology aiding the shelf life of traditional radio: BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix, now in its 20th year, is more popular in 2013 than it has ever been - the direct result of being available to the online world.

Here at Pulse, DJ mixes are at the core of what we do. We're dedicated to locating mixes from the worldwide electronic scene to bring to our listeners on a daily basis, as well as providing fresh new music via our weekly podcast and Fresh Blood series. For the first in our end of year wrap ups, Pulse Radio staff and contributors from our offices in London, Sydney, New York, Cape Town and Ibiza have pulled together their top 20 mixes in 2013. Thanks for listening (and reading!) and here's to another year of electronic music taking over the world.

#20 Alison Marks - Fresh Blood
A mix showcasing what it is that makes real deep house such a beautiful thing. Transitioning between balearic breakdowns, jacking percussion call to arms vocals and chunky 3am basslines, this is a mix equally moody and optimistic. With a style inspired by the genre's past without ever ceasing to look forward (check Larry Heard's remix of her Wallflower project, if more proof were needed), Alison is definitely a talent to watch in 2014. [James Huxley]

#19 Animal Trainer - AUTOBRENNT 069
When the Swiss duo Animal Trainer produced the 69th installment of AUTOBRENNT’s podcast series it was really something remarkable, inspired and inspiring. It opens with their own stunning ‘To Give’ before moving into the magnificently emotive Samu.l remix of James Blake’s ‘The Wilhelm Scream.' Notably, many of the set’s other standout moments come in the form of their own productions, including ‘Pirate Games,’ ‘Mental,’ and their remix of Renato Ratier’s ‘True Love.’ The mix can be summed up best by one user’s comment on Soundcloud: "We need more music that soothes our heartbreaks and sadness like this set does. Thank you for finding and pulling the heart strings so gently." [Reisa Shanaman]

#18 Recondite - LWE Podcast
Recondite’s LWE podcast is both perfect for a dance and for just chilling out (he suggests you listen to it in the back seat of your car), and that minimal acid techno, gloomy and pensive, is just so damn beautiful. The mix rises and falls like little waves at the beach, flowing seamlessly, cool and gently, through new and old tracks, with the odd hint of a future brilliant release. As a huge fan of his productions, it’s no surprise that I love this mix so much. This one is already timeless. [Ben Muller]

#17 Machinedrum - RA.386

After releasing his superb album 'Vapor City' in September, Travis Stewart put forward one hour of meticulously mixed bass and footwork for his installment of the Resident Advisor podcast series. Hovering around the 170 bpm mark, but with plenty of half-time explorations thrown in for balance, Stewart showcases his own work (including some unreleased diamonds) and contemporaries such as Om Unit, Ital Tek and Tessela. Amid another year of nostalgic yearning for the sounds of 90s and prior house music, it was refreshing to hear such forward-thinking music. [Morgan Richards]

#16 Adam Freeland - Kazantip 118 BPM At 5am
Adam Freeland is a name you probably haven't heard much of of late. Then again, its been quite a spell since breaks have been in vogue, having been massively overshadowed by the dubstep and bass music explosion. In this set of pitched-down, dark and chuggy broken beat for the early morning Kazantip crowd, Freeland shows that the genre actually never really went away - it just needed one of its pioneers to pull it all together so coherently to remind us of just how good, and refreshing, it can sound at this point in time. [Henry Johnstone]

#15 The Revenge - Most Haunted Mix MXIII
Though this mix was put together especially for Halloween, it goes far beyond a themed ‘spooky’ mix, hitting just about every known subgenre of house in two hours. Kicking off with the haunting, twisted Adam Beyer mix of The Mole’s 'Still In My Corner,' soon The Revenge leads us to the lush boogies of Cut Copy’s 'Free Your Mind' (Fort Romeau Mix), and that’s when the mix really begins to take off. By hour two, Robert Hood’s 'Detroit: Once Circle' leads over to the ‘90s tribal progressive beats of Tropical Moon’s 'Jungle House' and never looks back. [Chandler Shortlidge]

#14 Audion - Live at Movement
When Matthew Dear took the stage at Movement this past May, his futuristic sounds temporarily transported those in attendance far from earth, and thrust them unapologetically into the farthest reaches of space. His first performance under the Audion moniker in almost three years, he used the platform to test out a slew of never-before-heard material, as well as a few tried-and-true tracks. His deep, dark grooves and robotic rhythms had a hold on the crowd for the entirety of his 60-minute slot. [Reisa Shanaman]

#13 Flight Facilities - Triple J Mixup Exclusives 2002-2012

It is always refreshing when an artist ditches conformity in lieu of creativity and innovation. With their sets for Triple J's Mixup Exclusives series, Aussie duo Flight Facilities have done just that, and delightfully so! They crafted four clever mixes that span a decade each, from 1972-2012. Each one is completely chronological and even incorporates TV and radio samples of significant events from the decade covered. For some added fun, when you download the mixes the album cover of each tune shuffles across the screen of your iPod as it plays. Mixing an impressive number of songs into just sixty minutes (the final installment includes 82), don’t blink, or you may miss one! [Reisa Shanaman]

#12 Genius Of Time - Boiler Room Live Set

A successful live set is a tricky beast to master. Too far in one direction and you have an hour of carbon copy hits, too far the other way and the audience are left listening to vaguely recognisable hooks, lost in a sea of effects, distortion and improvisation. But on such a challenging playing field is where GOT's live set proves itself. The pair's back catalogue has been re-imagined specially for their live performance, and in the process the hour long performance creates something way greater than the sum of the parts. Like listening to the Aniara discography in 4D even. [James Huxley]

#11 Eric Volta - Fresh Blood

The sunlight warms your face as you walk down the street, your headphones securely plugged in with Eric Volta's Fresh Blood mix syncing with your mind. Take a moment to appreciate each note floating through. This mix is purely for our listening pleasure, with its depths and nuances complimented with ambient sounds accompanied by relaxed beats. Throughout the mix, Eric shows us his fluidity between all sorts of genres and sounds, with perhaps the standout cut the "Eric Volta Does His Own Thing" remix of his own track 'Akrobat' that he worked on with Ejeca; a beautiful mixture of low end sounds dotted by chords that harmoniously beep throughout. [Natalie Freilich]

#10 Ivan Smagghe - Pulse.113

Kill The DJ boss, one time Andrew Weatherall collaborator and world conquering DJ, Ivan Smagghe is hailed for his sharp take on creative mediums. From poetry and film to music and imagery, Ivan’s reputation for surprise is deservedly earned – we were given the shock of our lives when he delivered a charging live set for his Pulse Podcast earlier this year. A two hour mix that crams in masses of disco, techno, house and electro, the mix relentlessly pummels the listener, taking them on a journey through the good times and the bad, the dark and moody to the pumping and joyful. Always on an underground level, Ivan’s inch perfect ear for an engaging track and a nifty mix meant he delivered one of my favourite podcasts of the year. [Joe Gamp]

#9 Francesca Lombardo - Into The Wormhole: Robot Heart NYC 2013

If you've ever read an interview with Francesca or gotten a chance to see or meet her at one of her gigs you'll know that she's got an infectiously mischievous disposition that translates into an experience that often goes well beyond the music she produces or plays as a DJ. This 1.5 hour set from her first appearance for Robot Heart at their New York City satellite event encapsulates this reality perfectly. Welcoming you to the mix is her own voice before delving into a deep and spaced-out house offering with equal parts haunting vocals, melodies and subtly woven effects. [Alex Fish]

#8 Jamie Jones & Dyed Soundorom - Ibiza Villa Takeovers mix

Jamie Jones B2B with Dyed Soundorom was an epic two hour set at the Boiler Room Villa Takeover Sessions. Dancefloor massacre best describes this set, with big basslines, cutting hats that take the lead and melodies that set the groove into one of an easy, but pounding, demolition of the floor. The sound quality of this particular mix has it's flaws, but this is due to technical issues, and absolutely nothing to do with the two DJs behind the decks. Their track selection and fusion of each others' styles is indeed flawless, and well worth the listen. [Cliff Viljoen]

#7 Claude VonStroke - Essential Mix
If it's one thing the Dirtybird head honcho can be counted on, it's that he'll make you get up and he will make you dance, whether you are prepared to or not. His second Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 does just that - an irresistible showcase of what had inspired him on the road as he toured his third studio album, 'Urban Animal'. This mix may not be the most technically perfect, by Vonstroke's own admission, but picks from KiNK, EPROM, Catz n Dogz plus plenty of his own cuts including Doorly's remix of 'The Clapping Track' make for a bass heavy, groove laden mix that just doesn't let up from start to finish. [Marissa Demetriou]

#6 Maya Jane Coles - XLR8R Podcast

It's always refreshing when an artist lives up to the hype. Maya Jane Coles is a shining example of this, her meteoric rise more than justified through the quality of her melodic dancefloor cuts and more recently her debut album of downtempo pop gems. Her prowess behind the decks is just as strong and there's been a couple of mixes to enjoy this year, however it's the 300th XLR8R podcast with its final 15 minutes that displays a harder side of Coles that's rarely seen - namely via the epic transition from Eskuche & Nu Sky's 'Detroit' into the brutal 'Gravity?' by Remute - which exhibits versatility and justifies her place at the top. [Henry Johnstone]

#5 Guy Gerber - Essential Mix

Guy Gerber is an absolute master of his craft. As if taking pen to paper, he tells moving stories with his music. Guy’s Essential Mix, made at the close of summer in Ibiza in the presence of a few friends, showcases his incredible talent for selecting emotional, melodic tracks, and weaving them together cohesively, coherently and ever organically. It listens like a lush lucid dream, and was canonized into a class of timeless, instant classics. The opening notes implore the listener to ‘drink up the potion.’ Drink up we certainly did, Guy. [Reisa Shanaman]

#4 Tiga - Boiler Room Mix
If you've been following Turbo Recordings' recent left turn towards techno, you'll know that Tiga behind the decks today is a far cry from the same Tiga of his sexy, 2009 electro-pop long player 'Ciao!'. At clubs and festivals in 2013, Tiga plays hard, and this Boiler Room set is a favourite for its variety of genres but consistency in the emphasis of staying under 120Hz. [Peter Banco]

#3 Nicolas Jaar - Boiler Room NYC DJ Set at Clown Sunset x RBMA Takeover
Nicolas Jaar, the other half of the sophisticated live musical entourage known as Darkside, demonstrated at the Clown & Sunset’s RBMA Takeover night for Boiler Room, the mature and complex inner-workings of his musical mind when behind the hardware going it solo. Morphing sounds, and their signatures crafted within, in a way that only Nico Jaar can do. A phenomenal listen. [Samantha Emmenes]

#2 Dixon - Essential Mix
2013 became the year of Innervisions, with the label sweeping over everyone’s collective imaginations like a torrential river. The breaking point, of course, came with Ten Walls’ summer anthem, “Gotham,” and the flood waters have only been gathering steam since, seeing Dixon crown RA’s Top 100 poll and score this masterful Essential Mix, showcasing the Innervisions’ melodic, lush sound impeccably. From beginning to end, this mix us nothing but buttery smooth, Dixon perfection. [Chandler Shortlidge]

#1 Gesaffelstein - House of Vans x Boiler Roommix
Creator of taut, textured techno, Mike Levy, AKA Gesaffelstein, oozes obscurity and mystique from every pore. Back in January he showcased a 90-minute set of dark, depraved and brooding electronica for Boiler Room from Berlin's infamous House of Vans. Then in November his debut album 'Aleph' confirmed what anyone who has heard his productions for Bromance or seen him DJing already knows: The Frenchman is set to become one of dance music's biggest stars. [Samantha Emmenes]

S.A.S.H Loses Its Home As The Abercrombie Hotel Prepares To Close

One of Sydney's favourite watering holes and clubbing spaces The Abercrombie Hotel will be closing it's doors for good in January, another venue affected by the advent of urban gentrification in the Chippendale area.

"We're shutting down due to the development going ahead around Central Park," Abercrombie manager Dane Gorrel told Pulse Radio this afternoon. "They're going to be building a big commercial shoppig mall around and above us."

This of course means that long running Sunday party S.A.S.H has now sadly lost it's home, with the promoters holding their final party on January 5th.

"Rennie & Dane the owners have been a significant part in the success of S.A.S.H at Abercrombie & arguably we've established together Sydneys best Sunday party, possibly even Sydneys best party full stop," reads a post on the S.A.S.H facebook page. "Abercrombie is not just a venue, it's become something a little more special, something much more, something some would call there home." [sic]

Whilst The Abercrombie's days might be sadly numbered, S.A.S.H will continue to live on at another, as yet unannounced, city venue.

The final four S.A.S.H parties are listed below and The Abercrombie's last drinks will be served on January 9th.

S.A.S.H Final 4 Parties
22.12.13 - Guti (live)
29.12.13 - SASH Xmas Party

#41: Deep Space Orchestra - The 10 4 Rule (Toby Tobias Rmx) - Fly By Night

#40: Claude VonStroke - Can't Wait - Dirtybird Records

#39: Burial - Come Down To Us - Hyperdub
Amidst all the vinyl crackle, eerie atmospheres, haunting vocals and scattered beats that are now well know traits of a Burial tune, there’s always been melody. It might have been suffocated under all the other elements, and most of the time it was all too brief, but it was always there. On the closing track to his most divisive release to date, Burial finally frees his shackles and embraces melody in full. The result is some kind of lost trip-hop cut from the early 90s; an unashamedly beautiful and heartbreaking piece of music. Forget the social commentary keyboard warriors are getting all antsy over…just listen. – Henry Johnstone

#38: Chvrches - The Mother We Share (Moon Boots Remix) - French Express

#37: Claptone - Wrong - Exploited

#36  Guy Gerber - One Day In May - Visionquest

#35: Breach - Jack - Dirtybird
Breach isn't a new addition to our scene, he has been putting out impressive productions for a long time under Ben Westbeech, but it's this new alter ego and especially his hit 'Jack' that has made 2013 his year, even making it into Victoria Secret's Fashion Show for 2013 as the back drop for how the angels stay fit (yes it's on youtube…thank me later). I'm a sucker for a good baseline and catchy vocals and it seems I'm not alone in loving this tune. Let's Jack.

#34: Andhim - Hausch Get Physical

#33: Midland - Trace - Aus
This year Midland fearlessly climbed into barebones design, gaining everyone’s attention with ‘Trace’. The ballsy house/techno track doesn’t fail to grip listeners with a hedonistic mix of masculine stabs and warm percussion. Despite the difference from his 2012 work, ‘Trace’ is undeniably his own; the effusive breakdown being a signature that Midland has built his name on. No surprise, ‘Trace’ has been the awaited crescendo of so many of his sets this year - never failing to delight. – Sonia Miles-Khan

#32: Nick Curly - Underground (Dennis Ferrer Remix) Defected

#31: Ob Ignitt - Oh Jabba - FHXE

#30: DjRUM - DAM Second Drop

#29: Ten Walls - Gotham - Innervisions

#28: Reach for the Dead – Boards of Canada - Warp Records

#27: Andy Ukhtomsky & Disrute - Horizons EP - Loophole Recordings

#26: Isolée - Allowance - Pampa Records

#25: Paper Trails - Darkside - Other People / Matador

Nico Jaar's Darkside project has been one of the most intriguing musical developments of 2013. Albeit the steady 4/4 pulse, their sound is so far removed from electronic music, sounding more like an ode to 70s psych rock. My pick from their debut album without a doubt is 'Paper Trails' and you need look no further than their 10-minute rendition for RA's Sessions series for a jaw dropping live performance. - Henry Johnstone

#24: F For You - Disclosure - PMR Records
One of the more catchy songs from Disclosure's overwhelmingly successful debut record, this is one that gets stuck in your head for days. Opening with a dry beat and synth line that screams the work of the English brothers Guy and Howard, the track is also one of the few on the album that features the vocals of the guys themselves. Couple that with a well constructed melody and simplistic lyrics and you've got one of the most infectious dance tunes of the year. - Georgia Hitch

#23: Flume - Holdin on -  Future Classic
To say that Aussie wonderboy Flume had a massive 2013 would be, erm, quite an understatement. As impressive as his the entire of his #1 platinum selling debut album is, it’s the opening track which remains its crowning moment. Wrapping up the soulful voice of 70s singer Anthony White in powerful beats and a vintage atmosphere, ‘Holdin On’ is a highly addictive slice of electronica, not least because of the catchy bass line. Keep holdin’ on to this record and keep on playin! – Deborah Schmidt

#22: Kelela - Bank Head (Ft. Kingdom) - Fade To Mind

#21: Agoria - Scala - Innervisions

#20: Lone - Airglow Fires - R&S Records

#19: Feelin' - Florian Kupfer - L.I.E.S.

#18: Ten Walls - Requiem  - Innervisions

#17: Move D - To The Disco - Electric Minds

#16: Floating Points - Wires - Eglo

#15: Maxxi Soundsystem & Name One - One In Three - Defected

#14: MCDE - Raw Cuts #5 (Recloose Remix) MCDE

#13: dBRm – Darnley - The Nothing Special

#12: Mathew Jonson - Level 7 (Dixon Remix) Crosstown Rebels

#11: Adesse - Baayi - Prime Numbers

#10: DJ Yellow & Flowers And Sea Creatures - No One Gets Left Behind (Konstantin Sibold Remix) - Compost Records

#9: Todd Terje - Strandbar - Olsen Records

#8: Mano Le Tough - Primative People (Tale Of Us Rmx) - Permanent Vacation
- Chandler

#7: Matthew Dear - Fighting Is Futile (KiNK, Benoit & Sergio Rmxs) - Ghostly
- James

#6: Dusky - Careless - Aus Music

#5: Pattern Drama - Girar O Mundo (Eric Volta's Introverted Melancolia Mix) - Touch Of Class - Eric Volta's Introverted Melancolia Mix of "Girar O Mundo" is one of those tracks that's so innovative, it almost defies categorization. The low slung bass line that runs through the length of the track ties everything together nicely, but it's the strings and wandering piano at the top end of the track that take this song to an entirely new level. Hit play and hear all the amazing things that are possible when the right analog sounds are paired up with a brilliant
composition and masterful production work. [Chris Danks]

#4: Tessela - Hackney Parrot (Inc Special Request Vip Mix) Poly Kicks
- James

#3: The Mole - Lock Down Party (DJ Sprinkles Crossfaderama Rmx) - Perlon
- James

#2: Guy Gerber & Clarian - Claire - Visionquest

#1: Green Velvet - 'Bigger Than Prince' (Hot Since 82 Remix & Martinez Brothers Rmx) - Circus Recordings
- Chandler

5 Must Have Plug-Ins For Under $100

Mike Kiraly is a talented producer who’s been out front and behind the scenes as both a DJ and producer. He’s engineered records for some of the industry’s heaviest hitters, and in 2009 had one of his tracks featured on Steve Lawler’s Essential Mix.  Now, his own label, Radio Science, is being reborn and taking a different apporach, bravely providing all of its releases for free in order to make sure that it reaches as many people as possible. Mike shares with us his picks for the top five essential plug-ins for under $100.

Sonic Charge Permut8 - $66

Plug-in developer Sonic Charge seems to get overlooked by many. Perhaps previous offerings, such as the mysterious Synplant, deviate too greatly from standard design and interface conventions for the average computer-based music producer, but if you can see past the somewhat esoteric nature of their marquee products, you'll find some of the best low-cost, yet high-value plug-ins available anywhere. And if you're ready to add one of their plug-ins to your arsenal, might I suggest Permut8?

At first glance, Permut8 would appear to be a glitch creating, bit-crushing FSU effect processor. And if that's what you're looking for then you can stop reading right now and confidently put $66 of your hard earned cash down on the table. But while Permut8 definitely excels in that area, its processing capabilities offer a vast array of effects just waiting to be exploited for creative sound design. From subtle flanging echoes to the full-on harshness of digital aliasing, Permut8 is a seemingly limitless source of intriguing audio manipulation. Sonic Charge is kind enough to offer a healthy demo period, so there is no reason not to explore the potential of this device. And whatever you do, don't let the parameter options on the user interface intimidate you (I don't understand what most of the controls do either). Just get in there and start pushing buttons and flipping switches - you'll find something useful or inspirational very quickly.

Lexicon MPX Native Reverb Bundle - $99

Unlike the previous company on this list, Lexicon does not suffer from a lack of brand recognition. The Lexicon name has been synonymous with pristine reverb algorithms for decades, but their well-earned acclaim is based on the prevalence of their expensive, extravagant hardware units. Now it's possible to get your hands on those drop-dead gorgeous reverbs for a shockingly small dollar amount.

So what's the catch? Well, actually, there's two. First, unlike Lexicon hardware (or their high end software offerings) there aren't a multitude of parameter editing options. But the reduced number of controls are likely to be more than what most producers would be look for in the first place. Second, the plug-ins require an iLok, which can be a real turn off to those who avoid the USB dongle based piracy protection scheme. Regardless, the MPX Native Bundle represents a tremendous value for the price. There are other low-cost reverbs on the market, but none with the impressive (and well deserved) legacy of Lexicon.

Audio Damage Discord 3 - $59

I've been a loyal and enthusiastic Audio Damage supporter for years, and as such it's very difficult for me to pick just one of their plug-ins for inclusion on this list. The entire Audio Damage line is extraordinary and all of their products can be purchased for well below $100. I cannot think of any other company that has so much intrinsic value in their catalog.

Discord 3 is a pitch-shifter/delay/filter multi-effect that has found its way into almost every single project I have worked on since acquiring it. It can be smooth and refined or extremely wobbly and disorienting (in a good way!). I've used it for subtle, layered pitch-shift effects and stereo field enhancement with great success. Conversely, I've also made instruments sound like they're emanating from a 200 foot high Leslie speaker resting at the bottom of the ocean. And no matter how familiar I think I am with Discord 3, it always finds ways to surprise me.

Slate Digital VCC - $99

The past few years have seen a surge of products claiming to accurately model the sonic characteristics of nostalgia (vintage mixing desks, tape machines, signal processors, etc.). Funnily enough, most of those who will purchase these kinds of plug-ins have likely never used, or even touched, the hardware they claim to emulate, but that doesn't stop us from believing the hype. If so-and-so producer used a blah-blah-blah Mixer to record that awesome hipster band you love, than the software equivalent will make you sound just as good, right?

I don't know about all of that, but I do know that I trust my ears, and my ears have told me that the Slate Digital Virtual Console Collection contributes something positive to my mixes. I can't exactly put my finger on what it is. Most people spew forth words like "warmth" and "glue" when extolling the virtues of classic mixing desks (and their software equivalents). Maybe that's it, and maybe it's just a sonic placebo. Regardless, I heard a cohesion in my mixes that wasn't there before using VCC and I've strapped it across every track, bus and master output ever since.

It's only very recently that VCC has come down in price enough to qualify for the "under $100" restriction I've imposed on this list. But I found it to be worth the expense, even when it cost more. So $99 makes it an easy recommendation.

Celemony Melodyne Essential - $99

I shouldn't even have to write a reason for including Melodyne Essential on this list. It's Melodyne. It's the de facto standard pitch correction software used in all manner of studios the world round. Yet many producers ignore it because they think it's just for vocals. If that's what you think, than you're missing the best sound design tool I've ever known.

Sure, tuning and time correcting vocals and monophonic instruments are the primary focus of Melodyne Essential, but why stop there? Try tuning non-monophonic sources. Or why not tune drums? Time correct, time compress or time stretch anything you can think of. Create melodies from non-melodic content. Re-order the timing of a musical phrase. Or just downright mangle a sample until it's unrecognizable.

I cannot think of a more powerful sound design tool on my hard drive. Don't miss out on the sonic potential it imparts on anything and everything.

Earlier today, Dubfire unleashed on his Facebook followers in the hopes to quell the apparent torrent of requests for "mixes, remixes, etc," outraging many of his fans, and even fellow DJs.

Techno purveyor and Sci+Tec boss has incurred the wrath of many of his loyal fans after a Facebook rant against musicians who send him requests for mixes, presumably for their radio shows, as well as remixes, in the hopes of working with or getting noticed by him.

Head over to TBA Brooklyn this weekend and catch Canadian DJ and producer, Akufen, on Friday and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts on Saturday.

Akufen’s sound is an experimental and technological take on electronic music. In 2002, he released My Way, introducing his concept of “microsampling”, which involves him using short clips of samples randomly selected off FM radio broadcasts as a key musical element. His boutique label, Musique Risquée, continues to grow with new and respected artists like Atom TM, The Rip Off Artist, Philippe Cam, The Mole and Trendsetter & the Followers. He has remixed the works of Richie Hawtin, Yello and Massive Attack, among others. Give his Fabric 17 mix (Fabric, 2004) a listen to get an idea of what to expect on this fine Friday evening.

Head back to TBA on Saturday night for an energetic and soulful set from Guillaume Coutu-Dumont (Circus Company, Musique Risquée). This Montreal based artist describes his sound as “imbued with the sultry allure of jazz, the unquestioned groove of house, and the propulsion of techno.” Influenced by the sounds of Berlin as well as the French underground house scene, he performs regularly in his hometown and around the world. His solo project, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts is a blend of funk, house techno, gospel, swing and afro-beat. His solo productions are available on MUTEK_rec, Musique Risquée, Hartchef Discos, Floppy Funk, OSLO, Raum Musik and on French labels Circus Company and Karat.

Rio Music Conference was established back in 2009 as the largest gathering of electronic music in the Southern Hemisphere. Since then it has grown in scale and importance, expanding to include regional conferences in other Brazilian cities. The sixth edition, running from February 19th to March 4th, promises to be even bigger with five regional gatherings and one national edition in Rio de Janeiro.

The conference, held during Rio’s Carnival, consists of three days of debates, panels, seminars, and workshops centered around the major issues currently facing the electronic music industry, followed by seven nights of parties with some of the biggest names held at local venues.

The regional editions function in a similar way but focus on the current issues in each area. They contribute the Market Yearbook to the national edition, an analysis of the previous year’s developments in technology, market, artistic production, and professional training areas. It also features the nominations for the RMC Award – five names for each category, from which the ambassadors elect “Best of the Year.”

The first artist to be announced for the national edition is Dutch DJ/producer Armin van Buuren, who will play in Marina da Gloria on March 4th!

Here’s a general breakdown of the RMC 2014 schedule:

February 19th – RMC Welcome Party
The RMC Annual is released and the RMC Awards Ceremony takes place

February 20th to February 21st – RMC’s Business & Academic Activities
Three days of debates, panels, seminars, workshops, networking events, showcases, and special presentations

February 21st to February 28th – RMC’s Club Week
Several clubs in Rio host parallel events with RMC’s invited DJs and artists
