Quick Fire: SCNTST

As the bright eyed producer heads to London next Friday, 25th January, Pulse posed some rapid fire questions to the talented producers, about his sound, his equipment, his relationship with Boys Noize and age being just a number.

SCNTST thanks for joining us. Is there a particular theme or idea behind your name? No, it's just a name, nothing special.

If you had to sum up your sound to the untrained or unfamiliar, what would you say? I'd maybe say that my sound could reflect to all my influences i have like hip hop, experimental music, almost all kinds of electronic, rock, metal & all that stuff... sometimes it's just a mix between all that.

It's no secret that you're an extremely young producer, even by today's standards - is this focus on age a hinderance for you or does it help you to be noticed and stand out? To be honest it's more a help than a hinderance, almost everytime i get feedback or something, i really notice that.

How did you come to be discovered by Alex Ridha? A  friend of mine just sent alex my soundcloud on twitter, he kinda was into all that previews and ideas going on there, so he wrote me a mail.

what is it about Boys Noize Records that fits in with your sound? It's more the old stuff to be honest, i was really into the first bnr trax stuff, for example para one or djedjotronic releases... it really flashed me, because it was really futuristic and grooving for me. and i wanted to do the same.

Is Alex a big mentor for you? Does he help guide you and your sound, or is he more happy to let you do what you like? Yeah, of course! productionwise he gives me all the freedom i need, but he also gives me honest feedback about the tracks, what he would have changed & that stuff, that's a big honor for me.

You're being hailed for your unique sounding productions - are you fully digital or do you use analogue gear? And what do you use toproduce? I  started using ableton and i'm still using it, although I bought 2 cheap synths on ebay, but because i was almost more focused on doing stuff on the pc, i almost never use it.

You're going to be playing at London for Mixmag Live - are you a fan of playing here? How do you find the London crowds? Yes, i really love playing in london. already played twice there, always good crowd reactions to the tracks i'm playing!

what are the three secret weapons in your record bag at the moment (or the 3 tracks you cant leave without)? At the moment i'm really into the night slugs stuff, especially helix, i love playing his tracks. also the new kobosil remix for barker & baumecker on ostgut ton is really dope, you should keep an eye on him! and i really like the new antigone ep (the deadly games of gama), amazing techno!

Are you looking to release an album of some sorts soon? Actually the album is already finished, but it still needs this final touch... i really want it to be perfect. i have also some new projects going on, one with a good friend, we're planning a release on a big techno label. of course there will be more, but i won't tell yet :)

Toro Y Moi
Anything in Return
[Carpark Records]

With his third album, Anything in Return, Toro Y Moi seems to have finally shrugged off the chill-wave albatross that had been flying over him since he helmed the fledgling genre back in 2010. While he’s maintained the hazy cool of previous work, Chaz Bundick (why have a moniker when your name’s that good?) has dropped the hipster noodling in favour of proper production and solid songwriting. He said the aim was to make “sincere pop music that’s not all processed and bubblegum” and for the most part that’s exactly what he has achieved.

It’s hard to categorise the album’s overall sound, as it moves from tracks like Say That, which sounds like TV on the Radio merged with Mount Kimbie, to Cola, which could easily pass for a Frank Ocean or Weeknd joint. But while this eclecticism may stump journalists, it will delight an even larger demographic of listeners, hitting the right notes to entice everyone from armchair clubbers to r’n’b rudeboys and indie beardos. Anything in Return is far less electronic than the filter house of Bundick’s Les Sins project, but it’s fair to say that this is his most danceable release to date; maybe just a bit more sensual slow-jamming than sweaty rave pogo-ing. The combination of his sweet falsetto voice and super-smooth hip hop beats makes Toro Y Moi’s latest work sound like a sonic affair between Hot Chip and Flying Lotus.

Towards the end of the album the pop aesthetic does veer a bit far into top 40 territory, with the teenage lyrics, auto-tune samples and synth-hop sounds of Cake and Never Matter threatening to alienate Toro Y Moi’s more leftfield fanbase. Mercifully, the first two thirds of the record shows a musical maturity well beyond his 25 years. Given he only really started properly releasing music in 2009, his back catalogue could already be the envy of many artists more long in the tooth. With seven EPs, three LPs, last year’s June 2009 compilation and numerous remixes to his name, it’s perhaps no surprise that he’s now left the lo-fi a long time ago and by this point is making the kind of well-rounded music that will propel him into the wider cultural consciousness.

Futured Pushes Boston Forward: Lee Curtiss and Martin Buttrich This Weekend

It's a big weekend in Boston, as our partners Futured bring two world class acts to Bijou.

First up is Lee Curtiss, one of the members of the Visionquest tribe alongside Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, and Shaun Reeves. Originally from Detroit, Lee combines futuristic sounds with a solid dancefloor sensibility that comes from years in the Motor City. Having toured around the world constantly over the last several years, he comes with more than a touch of experience. His high quality productions have landed on Poker Flat, Culprit, and Visionquest amongst other labels. The latest, "Body Twitch feat. Debbie Rennald," is a cheeky banger that's been on the tips of many tongues for several months now. Known for being a party instigator and effervescent personality, Lee is an intriguing artist both on and off the decks.

On Sunday, Futured continues its onslaught with none other than Martin Buttrich. Co-captain of titan label Desolat, Martin's production and DJ history stretches back decades, first as the co-producer of Timo Maas. His solo career has seen releases on Desolat, Get Physical Music, and many more, along with numerous world tours, festival appearances, and collaborations. Known for subtle, smart techno and tech house, Buttrich brings an arsenal of knowledge to his live and DJ sets.

Joining these heavyweights will be Tamer Malki (both nights) and Wil Trahan (Sunday). Tamer's productions have garnered him critical acclaim, on labels like Draft, Something Different, and Headtunes Recordings. 2013 looks to be an even bigger year for this rising artist, with forthcoming releases on Kindisch, Supernature, and Soul Clap recordings. His affection for Boston runs deep, as he has been curating events and DJing in the city for many years alongside world class talent. Wil Trahan, the Providence resident who honed his skills at infamous afterhours club Therapy, provides additional muscle opening up for Buttrich.

Incredible Time-Lapse, Tilt-Shift View of Burning Man

Burning Man 2012 left an indelible mark on us at Pulse Radio, and on many adventurers around the world. The festival, held in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, every year in the fall, saw record breaking attendance last year. Over 50,000 travelers poured into the desert for a week to enjoy music (most notably for Pulse, at Robot Heart), art, and more.

In this video, we get yet another glimpse at the magic that was Burning Man. Not only is the content magical, but the technique employed by these artists enhances it, providing a very interesting lens through which we can view the festival. Firstly, they use time-lapse, a fitting way to cram in the week long eventl into a few short minutes. Secondly, they've employed a difficult technique known as tilt shifting. Tilt shifting is used to make things appear miniature, again suitable for a festival that covers miles and miles of desert.

Feast your eyes and ears!

The Record That Changed My Life Vol. 1

$

The Record That Changed My Life is a new feature series on Pulse where we ask DJs, producers and musicians to share the track that, as the title suggests, changed their lives. A simple concept, though as you'll discover, it makes for a fascinating insight into an artist's past and the music that shaped who they are and the sounds they now create.

For the very first edition we've gathered a selection of Australia's most established and up-and-coming producers in the electronic scene today. Take it away...

Mikah of The Aston Shuffle: 'Sweetness & Light' by Itch-e & Scratch-e

This track literally changed my life by sparking an instant obsession for electronic music which has led me to where I am today. It's directly responsible for me selling my drum kit to buy a pair of secondhand turntables!

Around '97 I was playing drums in a few bands, nothing too serious just a bit of fun really, and then one night a friend took me to a rave. When I walked into the room I was totally blown away by the control this so-called 'DJ' had over the entire crowd. The people were so connected, everyone in the room was sharing a moment together. I don't remember much at all from that night but the one thing that stayed with me was this ridiculously amazing record I had heard a couple of times during the course of the night. I searched it out, finally found it a few days later and instantly became obsessed with it and all facets of electronic dance music, from production to performance. I was hooked and still am today. Every now and again I put this record on and reminisce about "the good old days" - I'm getting goosebumps writing about it just now. Not too many records have that effect on you, but this one certainly does for me.

Elizabeth Rose: 'Cowboy 78' by The Wiseguys

This is probably my earliest musical memory in terms of when I was first really obsessed by a song that made me want to dance and to make my own music. My older brother Anthony who is a DJ/producer by the name of Hook n Sling is the person to thank for introducing this marvellous track to me back when he was living at home and I was about 8 years old. At the time, Anthony was my age now (22) and he had their newly released 1998 album 'The Antidote' on vinyl. He would play it non stop in his room. When I heard 'Cowboy '78' I would go into his room and dance around the room to it, such a fun memory. I'm the kind of person who listens to a song five or six times in a row if I love it...so it kind of became this thing where I'd always ask him to keep playing that song (sorry Anthony!).

I still love it to this day and play it in my own DJ sets too. I understand now why I loved it so much back then - all of the cowboy western samples were so colourful and fun to listen to. It was also a great track to dance around crazily to. I think it really showed me at an early age that you can have so much fun creating a piece of music, especially from fun samples in this case, as I do in my own tracks now. It really excites my ears every time I listen to the track and yes I still dance around at home to it, ha! I strongly recommend you check out the full album 'The Antidote'!

Dro Carey: 'La La' by Lil Wayne ft. Brisco & Busta Rhymes

Prior to 2008 I hadn’t listened to much major label hip hop. When I was about ages 13 – 15 my favourite rappers were guys like MF Doom, Madlib and Wu-Tang, and the closest I got to listening to chart records was Kanye West or whatever I happened to catch on TV on the video countdowns. One of those videos was 'Lollipop' by Lil Wayne, which was my first exposure to his music and, simultaneously, I found both my ‘underground’ loyalty affirmed by what struck me as a gross sensory assault – the autotune, the guitar solo - as well as feeling something strongly appealing about it; completely entranced by the inconceivable excess and lecherous neon of the clip.

There was an inescapable momentum surrounding Lil Wayne building into 2008 and this, as well as that video, had me curious, so I streamed 'Tha Carter 3' on iTunes but didn’t download it. And I think I did this every day for a week, listening to the minute long clips of each song, particularly 'A Milli', as if this were somehow the limit my taste and sensibility permitted lest I be judged by some unseen arbiter. And then I thought: what am I doing this for? I fucking LOVE this. So I downloaded the album – I have since purchased the 4LP vinyl – and was able to completely dive in. 'A Milli', 'You Ain’t Got Nothing', 'Let the Beat Build', were the obvious standouts, concentrated doses of some divine brag-rap glossolalia, but as I listened through the album I was caught off guard by something else. 'La La' (not to be confused with the similarly titled 'La La La', a mixtape track from the same sessions) featuring Busta Rhymes and Brisco, produced by David Banner, came on and I realised it was the weirdest beat I had ever heard, something far more off-kilter, alien and minimal than the lo-fi extensions of golden-age boom-bap that I was familiar with.

I gave up on musical hierarchy and the commercial prejudice. I do wonder what nurtures this in teenagers’ music tastes, as even a loner like me felt some obligation not to be into pop. It was an explosive gateway and this was the epicentre. I got into southern rap, RnB, crunk, bounce, chopped & screwed and so much more. Whatever he does now, I owe this all to Wayne. It’s hard to communicate how obsessed I was. The LP sleeve is on my wall (next to Aquemini, I guess that’s for another write-up) and hell I even own the t-shirt for this album. Your favorite artist at 16 is your favorite artist forever, regardless of how your tastes might change as you grow up. You will never care more than then.

Deepchild: 'On The Run' by Pink Floyd

The single most seminal influential band in my career (and, I'd argue many of my peers) remains Pink Floyd. I’ve mentioned in interviews before how my initial Floyd-discovery was via an broken and unlabeled cassette-tape found at a traffic crossing (it was shattered from traffic, its innards spilling out – and in my 12 year-old enthusiasm I later spliced the broken remains back together with sticky tape). I won’t repeat myself here.

The album was 'Dark Side of The Moon'– not their first or last, but seminal in it’s beguilingly embrace of analogue technology and epic, futurist narrative which verged on sound-collage, pot-haze and spacious dub-drawl. Suddenly, Pink Floyd’s agenda was clearer and more confident than ever previously – a willing subjugation of songwriting convention, favoring keyboard-sequences and half-whispered sub-mixes, enveloped in peerlessly lush instrumentation.

All cuts from the album are brilliant, but 'On The Run' is compelling for its sheer minimalist audacity. Focussed around an 8-note sequence generated from the legendary EMS VCS3 synth, it’s reductionist ‘proto-acid’ well before Chicago began jackin’ or Motor City embraced its steady Reagan Era sonic uprising. On The Run is everything and more which remains compelling about electronic-music. Relentless, ecstatic and compellingly simple. It stands as a sonic-seed from a major rock-band, who for an instant (and then a career) were channeling the ghosts of the future in effortless abandon.

Flume: 'Talamak' by Toro Y Moi

When it comes to all things Flume, the biggest game changer would have to be Toro Y Moi's 'Talamak'. I used to mainly listen to dance music, but this tune struck a chord with me, it totally converted me to all the weird chillwave stuff, the stuff that I now make as Flume.

Sydney's IF? Records is back on the clubbing tip again in 2013, prepping for their upcoming party next month at Sydney's One22 with Mexican producer Luis Flores.

Flores made a name for himself in his home city of Guadalajara, working as the Artistic Director of Nopal Beat Records and working with cultural authorities to produce a string of massive, free public events to bring electronic music to Mexico. In 2009 he made his first stamp on the international scene with the 'Damage EP' on Droid Recordings, which found immediate success, making the charts of artists such as Speedy J, The Detroit Grand Pubbahs and Chris Liebing’s Best 10 of 2009. Since the then, the only way has been up.

Flores will be supported by Eoin Brosnan, Jordan Peters and IF? main man Sebastian Bayne (check his recent mix recorded live at Tresor club below). Also on the bill is Material Object from Berlin. Originally from Sydney, he produces under various guises; as Modz with Dustin Zahn and Magnus with Tim Xavier. Making all the right moves, he recently put together a killer podcast for Chris Leibing's CLR. This will be his only Sydney show before heading back to Berlin.

Two Detroit players - old and new - have been confirmed to compile a compilation entitled We Love Detroit, detailing a potted history and affiliation with the lauded US city, brought together by Derrick May & Jimmy Edgar on We Love Recordings.

Bringing together two different generations of Detroit native, the 2 figures represent a different side of Detroit. May - a critical cog in the original, '80s movement alongside Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, creates a sharp and steely machine soul sound. Jimmy Edgar on the other hand, is part of the city's more illustrious and colourful second wave, pushing more glitzy and pop influenced sounds that go beyond the original template. A double disc collection, May selects techno mainstays such as John Beltran, Carl Craig and KiNK, whilst Edgar goes for a more contemporary spin on the city, covering Lando Kal and, Kyle Hall and Magic Tour.

The Asphodells - Ruled By Passion, Destroyed By Lust

The Asphodells
Ruled by Passion, Destroyed by Lust
[Rotters Golf Club]

Four years after the rockabilly stylings of Pox on the Pioneers, Andrew Weatherall has returned to the studio with ex-Battant guitarist and producer Timothy J. Fairplay, to create the altogether more dancefloor-oriented Ruled by Passion, Destroyed by Lust. Of course that sentence is something of a misnomer, as Weatherall never really left his East London studio, working away on various remixes, EPs and compilations, like last year’s aptly-titled Masterpiece mix for Ministry of Sound. But since his last album, and the double header of Wrong Meetings that preceded it, the master technician seems to have renewed his passion for DJing through his A Love From Outer Space nights with Sean Johnston.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of attending one of these parties then you’ll already be accustomed to the sound of this record. If not, then it’s probably best described as somewhere in-between the spacey alternative rock that musically put Manchester on the map and the rhythmically repetitive acid house that followed it. Of course Weatherall’s loyal followers will lap this up, as it doesn’t stray too far from previous production work as the Two Lone Swordsmen or for Primal Scream, but Fairplay’s influence and talents should not be underestimated. Responsible for a string of well-received limited edition EPs over the last couple of years, his penchant for a Krautrock, obscure horror soundtracks and sparse Chicago house complement his mentor’s tastes perfectly.

The album begins with the cosmic Middle Eastern vibes of Beglammered – think of what might have soundtracked Argo’s film within a film – then there’s the Stone Roses-sounding Never There, before the duo set off into the hypnotic proto-disco of Skwatch and Another Lonely City. Late Flowering Lust gives the first glimpse of Weatherall’s voice, which while double-tracked and wobbly, still sounds a lot more vibrant than the deadpan drone we’ve heard on previous outings.

Much like the variety of vintage musical influences evident during the course of the album, the vocal content is also drawn from interesting sources, with two tracks based on poems from eccentric English writer John Betjeman, and the elegant album-ender Love From Outer Space referencing the A.R. Kane track that inspired the club night. The last third of the LP takes things deeper onto the dancefloor, with the driving acid of We Are The Axis and tension-building drone of One Minute’s Silence pushing the tempo towards the magnificent crescendo of Quiet Dignity (Of Unwitnessed Lives), which revels in combining b-boy electro breaks with Kraftwerk synth stabs and a Hooky bass guitar riff.

The Asphodells project is arguably Weatherall’s strongest original production work in many years and also signals the arrival of Fairplay’s studio skill. It may not exactly be breaking new ground, but with protégés like Daniel Avery racing ahead with the retro-futuristic sound, this is the right time and the right record to show them how it’s done.

Ruled By Passion, Destroyed By Lust is released on the 4th February on Rotters Golf Club, available to buy direct from here.

Techno Viking Takes Youtube Uploader To Court

It was July in the year 2000. On an overcast day in Berlin, the techno festival known as Fuckparade wound its way down Rosenthaler Straße, a busy hub for commuters and tourists. It was here that Matthias Fritsch, a no-name artist in Germany, unwittingly produced the Techno Viking.

Fritsch secretly filmed this man with whom we are now all too familiar, and then waited a year to upload the film. For several years after that, it sat around in Web obscurity. It wasn't until 2007 that the video went viral, and by 2010, over 20 million people had seen it. That's more than the population of the entire Netherlands. Fritsch went on to make money from Youtube and become a celebrated lecturer on Web 2.0 around the world.

But someone wasn't happy. And that someone, Mr. Techno Viking himself, has now sued Fritsch for illegally capturing and profiting from his identity. The Viking's real identity still remains unknown. What is known is that he contacted Fritsch and asked him to remove the video (which he did). But by this time it was already viral. In fact, some sources report that the Techno Viking moniker (or Technoviking, whichever you prefer), was coined by a Central American porn site which randomly reposted Fritsch's video.

The implications of the trial for Web 2.0 and social media are important. If Fritsch is found guilty of illegally profiting from Viking's personality, he may be asked to scrub the internet of all Techno Viking related material (an impossible feat), or asked to pay a fine of over $300,000. Such actions would send a confusing message to Youtube uploaders everywhere, so it will be interesting to see how the German courts approach this matter.

We'll keep you updated. In the meantime, if you see someone strange dancing to techno in the streets, we highly encourage you to film them. Send them over here when you do.

Hadouken, the British band who describe themselves as "grindie," have released their second film in 3 years. Entitled, "People Are Awesome 2013," it features clips of some of the most stunning physical feats anyone could possibly imagine. Focused on extreme sports, you will be left amazed by human potential as you watch men and women defy the laws of nature time after time. Your heart will be warmed as you watch a boy in crutches score a goal, and a paralympics athlete soar in his wheelchair.

Stop reading now if you're crying tears of joy, because several of the scenes in the video are confirmed fake, like the amazing baseball save, for instance. However, we maintain that the fakes are so damn good it shows off another amazing human quality- ingenious editing. Since its unclear which clips are real and which are exaggerated, we suggest a drinking game tonight or hell, today while you're in the office. Have a shot every time you think something is fake. If your handle of whisky is empty by the end of the video, you might need a little more faith. If you haven't taken a sip, good luck in life, you gullible Pulser!
